IPhone 3gs needs to be restored but won't

I just a new iPhone 3gs and I hooked it up to my computer and updated my iTunes. Once I did that it told me I had to restore my iPhone, and I tried to do so, but once it gets to the end it says "could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (14)". My phone will only turn on and off, and all it has it the iTunes symbol on it and the end of the usb plug-in on the screen. I can't do anything! Can somebody please help? I don't know what to do. I do not have a phone, and the nearest Apple or iphone carrier is 45 minutes away.

Make sure your PC time and time zone are set correctly, you'll get this error if they are not.
Make sure IE is enabled, you'll get that error message if it's not:
1.Navigate to the Control Panel by clicking on Start, followed by Control Panel (or Settings and then Control Panel, depending on how you're setup).
2.In the Control Panel window, open Add or Remove Programs.
Note: In Microsoft Windows XP, depending on how your operating system is setup, you may not see the Add or Remove Programs icon. To correct this, click on the link on the left-hand side of the Control Panel window that says Switch to Classic View.
3.In the Add or Remove Programs window, click on the Set Program Access and Defaults button on the menu on the left.
4.Choose the Custom option in the Choose a configuration: area.
5.In the Choose a default Web browser: area, make sure there is a check in the check box next to Internet Explorer.
6.Click OK. Windows XP will apply your changes and the Add or Remove Programs window will close automatically.

  • Help, i unlocked my iphone 3gs and now have restored now won't work

Help, I have unlocked my iphone 3gs to get 3rd party apps. Problem is I couldn't ever get it to go on silent. so I restored it back to not be unlocked and its stuck at the apple screen, will not turn on. I did a hard reset, pushing both the buttons on the iphone at the same time, the one on the top and on the bottom of the screen at the same time and it restarts, but then is stuck at the apple screen. What should I do? It's still under warranty. Will apple replace it since I was trying to restore it?

It's still under warranty. Will apple replace it since I was trying to restore it?
No it is not. Jailbreaking, unauthorized unlocking, etc. void the warranty (and can be detected by Apple). Also, support for hacked iPhones is prohibited here by the forum Terms of Use.

  • My new iphone 4 keeps saying it needs to be restored, but won't restore.

My new today iphone 4 keeps saying that I need to restore it, but everytime I do it says at the end of the restore an error occured and the restore failed, and I can't use the phone until it's been restored....any help?!

Try disabling your antivirus and firewall software. It can interfere with the restore/update process.

  • My iPhone 5 needs to be restored, but I'm not backed up to iCloud

I plugged in my phone to my computer today to sync with iTunes, and I received a message claiming that I need to restore my phone. I'm not backed up to iCloud. In fact, my iCloud has never backed up on this phone, and I've never been able to get it to work. I'm currently trying to.
I believe it's been backed up to my computer, but I'm really unsure. Is there any way that I can check to see if it has?
I'd really like to not lose all of my data, please help!
    -Rachel

To see if your phone has been backed up to the computer, start iTunes. From there, go to Edit, Preferences, Devices, and check to see if you see a backup listed there, and what the date is. If it is sometime not to long ago, you are in luck. If there isn't, your in trouble. Once the phone goes into recovery mode, the data is already gone.
Remember, restore the device, and then if you do use a backup you found on the computer, that restore will be to that date/time of the backup, and anything done since that time/date is lost.

    Hi there Katherine,
I have an article here that addresses this error code and can give you a few more troubleshooting suggestions for this issue:
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
    Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

hi i need sum help plzzz, iphone 3gs blackscreen and tryed evrything but wont kick out of dfu mode , much apreicated plz, it just happen wen i was restoring  the screen is balck but wen i restore it from itunes it says erorr 1600 and itunes does not reconise the phone , i have tryed eveything bt still no luck , I NEED UR HELP PLZZZ ,its my disabled daughters thank you

Anyone on this forum can correct me if I am wrong. I am not judging you, but to my knowledge the iTunes error 1600  usually affects products that are  jailbroken. again I am not saying that your iPhone 3GS was jailbroken. my only advise off the top of my head to assist you is to download the recent IOS firmware online. I know it is not the the #1 advised option, but it is the only option you have unless you wish to bring it to the Apple Genius bar and see if they can replace the phone or fix it themselves.

  • HT201210 my iphone says it needs to be restored but when i try to restore it it says it cant be restored and theres an unkown error

My iphone says it needs to be restored but when i try to restor it it says it cant be restored and it has an unknown error

Hi folks, just yesterday i can restore my iphone 4 that have a problem when i restore from itunes, when i do the restore from itnes, always showed me the following error:
    01:41:37.0017] Depth:0 Error:AMRestorePerformRestoreModeRestoreWithError failed with error: -1
[01:41:37.0017]    Depth:1 Error:The operation couldn\U2019t be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error -1 - Failed to handle message type StatusMsg)

    [01:41:37.0017]           - kBBUReturnTimedOut(8)/16: Pinging timed out
what I did was this: just when I will finish the process, when the status bar is at the end in the firmware, only put the sim card and go back to take out, I do this like 4 or 5 times and the process restoration ends so well. This method I tried it 2 times and 2 times worked. I spent like 10 hours trying to restore iphone without results, until I started watching the logs and the key is when you are upgrading the firmware sends a command to answer yes. And I hope this helps.
This is the line of the log that appears and when the restoration is correct:
    amai: AMAuthInstallBasebandHandleUpdaterStatus: commandAccepted: YES
    Regards.

You have no chose but to restore your phone. What do you mean "lose everything"? Is your data/iTunes content not on your computer?

    No such message occurs.
Are you trying to state that it says "Unable to activate"?
If so, this typically indicates the device has been hacked or jailbroken.  If that is the case, no support can be provided via these forums.

You may need to put the iPad in recovery mode to restore it.

  • My ipod needs to be restored but it only stays on the "connect to itunes" for approximately 20 seconds and then turns black as if it is turned off.

So a couple of months ago, I had to restore my new IPOD 5 TOUCH because i had forgotten the password and disabled it, so as you can imagine I am quite familiar with restoring it.
(The last time I had synced it was the only time that I had to restore it when I first got it when I had disabled it)
This morning I wanted to sync my ipod. So I plugged my ipod into my WINDOWS computer and waited for itunes to open, and it did just like it is supposed to. It then said itunes needed the latest update so i continued with updating it. Itunes updated, but then said that my ipod needed the latest software. I said "ok update" and thats when itunes made my ipod into DFU mode without me even touching it.
SOOOO as you can imagine I was quite upset. I then have realized that because Itunes had moved it into DFU mode on its own, I could not manually get my ipod out of DFU mode so the only thing i was left to do was go ahead and restore it.  (correct me if Im wrong)
My huge issue right now is that my ipod NEEDS to be restored, but it only stays on the "connect to itunes" screen for approximatley 20 seconds and then turns black as if it has been turned off. When I plug it into my computer and turn it on to the "connect to itunes" mode, it does open it in itunes and starts "extracting sofftware" but then when it turns black after 20 seconds, it closes out because my computer thinks it has turned off.
I have tried charging it, and nothing has progressed. Im not sure if anything can be done for it right now, or if I could bring it to an apple store to fix it... it's brand new about 3 months old.
HELP and some advice would be greatly appreciated  !
    Thanks!
    -B

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
