IPhone 3GS new or refurbished?

I'm an existing AT&T customer and am now able to purchase an iPhone 3GS for the "good guy" price of $199/$299 US. I was thinking of just getting the 16GB, but now I've convinced myself I need the 32GB. Anyway, AT&T has the 32GB available refurbished for $249 US. I've been doing some reading and there doesn't seem to be any difference between a refurbished and a "new" unit, or have I missed something? I like the idea of ordering my phone online at Apple, and going to my local Apple Store, picking it up and having them set it up for me, etc. but I don't get the $50.00 "deal". Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Refurbished wireless devices and netbooks carry a 90-day manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase. New Apple branded equipment is covered by Apple's one-year Limited Warranty. Refurbished Apple branded equipment is covered under Apple's original Limited Warranty, and will have at least 90 days or more remaining under the warranty when sold.
Basically, you do not get a full year warranty from AT&T of refurbed iPhones. You get at least 90 days, + the remainder of the one year, from THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE DATE. I believe there is a place on Apples website to check the serial number to find the amount of warranty left.

    The currently listed iPhone 3GS on Apple Store, whose price was brought down recently to $49 to match the price that AT&T is now offering: is it the price for a refurbished unit or a new unit?     What does it state on the site? Unless it specifically states that it is refurbished, it is new.
    I never realized it was so difficult for adults to read for themselves.

    Replacement iPhones are not mass manufactured.  They are built by a trained & certified technician.  Every component is new, however, with the possible exception of the camera and the processor, which may be reclaimed parts from previous units.  All components are checked & inspected prior to assembly, and the final assembled product is also quality checked.  This is a higher level of inspection that happens to any mass produced iPhone.
    Therefore, replacement iPhones have gone through a higher standard of quality control than a 'new' iPhone.  In some rare cases, you may end up getting a new iPhone from the assembly line, but that's usually only if there are no remanufactured devices available.

  • IPhone 3GS - new PC with blank iTunes?

    Hi all,
    My laptop died beyond repair.  I have an iPhone 3GS and I have installed iTunes on my new PC and when I load it, with my iPhone attached, it is blank.  I have made a copy of my photos but dont want to lose my contacts, calendar entries and apps.  How can I get them all into my new iTunes without all the system files/folders?  I have been assured it can be done, but cant find another article on the Support forum.
    I use the phone for business which is why all these things are important to me.  If I lose my music library it wont be the end of the world...but if this can be transferred too this would be great!
    I also use iCloud and my calendar items and contacts appear to be there okay...
    Any help gratefully received!

    If you have important business information you must have made regular backups of your laptop, so just restore the most recent backup to the new computer.
    If the information wasn't important enough to back up there is still hope, but I suggest not making the same mistake twice.

    The phone already has the latest Operating Service on the device.
    You can reset the phone by going to 'Settings > General > Reset' (at the bottom)

    I just bought a "new" iPhone 5 that chipmunk.nl says was manufactured in Oct 2014. There is no "RF" indication for refurb on the phone as other sites have indicated appears on a refurbished item. Apple indicates there is no support. How can I verify status?

    The purchase was via ebay, maybe not the best choice. It was apparently a warranty replacement item and the seller decided to go with an iPhone 6 instead. I have seen some articles that there may be a lot of them sitting in warehouses, but the Oct 2014 production date threw me.

  • IPhone 3GS stuck in recovery mode while updating to iOS 6.1

    Hello there, I was updating my iPhone 3GS(New Bootrom) from iOS6.0 to iOS 6.1. While it was updating, iTunes suddenly ends up saying error and now my iPhone is stuck in recovery mode loop. I've tried DFU mode on my iPhone and try to kick it out by using TinyUmbrella but the computer doesn't reconize it. And when it was on recovery, iTunes doesn't reconize too, a window pops up and says i have to install 'Apple Mobile Device'. I've re-install and install iTunes a couple of times and nothing is working. Switching on and off the iPhone doesn't work too. Please, someone help me with this problem! I really do not know what to do! Please reply this As Soon As Possible!

    Ok. I have spent the last 8 hours researching this problem and have the absolute 110% answer to everyone's problem with this issue.
    Error 13 and 14 : Are checksum problems with the firmware image that is in the update package.
    The update package is a .ipsw (IPod or IPhone SoftWare). This file is actually just a .zip renamed .ipsw.
    The error is caused by a failure to download a crc-free version of the file. Not really sure why there are so many crc problems with the iphone updates, but Apple does not check the integrity of the update package before wiping your current version of IPhone software and that is why all IPhones that start an update with a bad update package end up in recovery mode. These errors are NOT related to the iTunes installation, antivirus software, or firewalls.
    Recommendation : use a program like "Object Fix" (Freeware) to verify the integrity of the file prior to commencing with any new updates. You will have to keep trying to download it until you get a error free file. Once you have a CRC error free file this problem will go away. (I thought TCP/IP helped get rid of CRC errors.)
    I had another problem and that was...
    Error 1603 and 1604 : These are USB driver connectivity problems.
    Recommendation : FULLY uninstall and re-install itunes software as stated in the Apple support documentation. Be sure to reboot between each step and these problems should clear themselves up. In addition, firewalls and anti-virus software may cause these errors as well.
    Finally, shame on apple for not properly documenting their software so that end users do not have to decrypt their error messages with no true support to solve the issues. These are problems that enough people have had that there should be specific documentation on these problems.

    Does anyone how I can get a brand new iPhone 3GS as a warranty  replacement for my iPhone 3GS? I already had the phone replaced once with a refurbished phone that has a problem with becoming frozen and unresponsive. This occurred ten times since I got the phone on 4/16/2011. I have tried doing a hard reset and have also restored the phone as a new device. I have an Apple Care plan. I am concerned that the refurbished phones will not be reliable due to my experience with the refurbished  one that I got as a replacement.

  • New 3GS 8GB vs Refurbished 32Gb ?

    Hello,
    I ordered an iPhone 3GS 32 Gb a month ago and I just got an email from my phone company saying that the iPhone 3GS are discontinued except for the 8Gb model.
    They are now offering me a brand new 8Gb model or a refurbished 32Gb. I'm not really a fan of "refurbished" things. What would you guys do ? Is 8Gb still enough in 2010 ?

    There is nothing wrong with refurbished. I try to buy refurbished when available.
    As far as capacity, it all depends on how you are going to use the phone.

  • TS1538 I cannot sync my iPhone 3GS after upgrading to a new computer and installing iTunes

    i am trying to sync my iPhone 3GS to a new computer. I downloaded and installed iTunes and copied over the iTunes folder into My Music. Unfortunately iTunes on the new computer does not recognize my iPhone.
    - The old computer was running windows XP OS 32bit. My new computer is running Windows 7, 64 bit.
    - I have installed iTunes on the new computer. Windows OS recognizes the iPhone but iTunes does not. I have uninstalled and reinstall iTunes a few times now. On one reinstall, i recieved the following messages:  "an iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again".  Upon trying again, i recieved this message: "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device".
    every other time, nothing happens other that Windows prompting that the iPhone is detected. Any suggestions appreciated.

    My 5+ yr. old iPhone 3GS is on it's last legs. I desperatly need to "back it up" ASAP, so I can buy a new iPhone, and I really need to be able to transfer my 5 years worth of info to a new iPhone, (a 4S). The computer I used to back my iPhone on when I first got it no longer works, so I was wondering about being able to back my iPhone up to my daughters laptop, but she also has an iPhone 3GS, that's already backed up to her laptop. I know you couldnt back up two iPhones up to one computer, (at least that's what I was told, years ago), but I was recently told by an "Apple" rep that I could "probably" back my iPhone up to her computer without losing anyone's info, if I created a "Secondary User Name Account" on her computer. I'm not comfortble doing this unless I'm reassured more than being told that it's "probably" safe.
    Does anyone know what options I have, and if this idea would result in one or both of us losing our info, if we tried to store two iPhones "back up info" on one laptop?
    My phone's barely working at all, but I can still access my info, (for now, at least). I really need to do something now.
    Could anyone who knows how this works please give me some info?

    First, you don't have a 5+ year old 3GS. The 3GS has only been around for under 4 years. In fact, 5 years ago there were NO iPhones; the original iPhone (2 generations before the 3GS) came out on June 29, 2007 - not quite 5 years ago. The 3GS was released June 19, 2009.
    That aside, you can sync multiple phones to one computer - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495. boogeyman is wrong.     I run both Mac and a PC and have iTunes on both, which has previously recognised my iPhone. I had updated my Mac with the new iTunes software with iCloud and updated my iPad2 just yesterday. I then wanted to do the same with my iPhone today, but my Mac wouldn't recognise the device so I tried it on my PC, which recognised the phone but told me I needed to update my iTunes and this in turn wanted to update my iPhone software. After completing all this and restarting, my iPhone now shows the iTunes icon with the USB plug pointing towards it, obviously wanting me to plug it in to my computer to re-connect with iTunes, but now neither of my computers recognise my iPhone and my PC states an 'Unknown Device'. My Mac doesn't even see it. Can anyone help as I really need to get my phone working?? Thanks
