IPhone 3gs: No Sim

So, i bought a used IPhone 3gs from gamestop for a reasonable price and i go to set it up....problem is it didnt come with a sim card and i cannot activate it without one. I tried using my old tracfone sim card, it fit but it didnt work....it says no service....SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!

If the tracfone SIM card is not connected to an active account you will get the No Service message. Call Tracfone to activate it, or get a new SIM. However, you can still activate the phone to use as an iPod Touch using that SIM.
If the phone is locked to a carrier you will get a different error message; it will say that the SIM is from an unsupported carrier.

What do you mean how can you unlock it? If it was truly "sim-free" it would not have locked when you updated.
ONLY the carreir the phone is locked to can authorize unlocking it. Contact them if you haven't managed to brick it entirely now.

Iphone 3gs "no sim card installed" issue after updating iOS

I have an iPhone 3Gs. Last week I started updating the iOS of the phone then, I was brought to the page wherein I need to activate the phone. After going through some tabs to tap, the screen says " iphone cannot be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable, try to connect to iTunes. So I followed what is instructed. I connected the phone to iTunes but the message says, There is no sim card installed on your iphone. Before I updated the phone, the sim card was not inside the phone, so I inserted it back after the message "no sim card installed, try to disconnect and insert your sim card". But still nothing happened, the message keeps appearing. Also, I can see a "No service" message on the upper Ieft part of the phone. Is the sim card not inside the phone before updating the iOS the main reason why the phone cannot recognize the sim card? first time iphone user here, my aunt gave me this iphone. I really need help. Thank you so much

Ask your aun if the phone was hacked/jailbroken. Those problems are symtomatic of a hacked phone.

hi all, my apple iphone 3gs has been working fine for months and i have now just bought a new iphone and given my 3gs to my mum, she has put in her sim card after signing in with her apple id and for some reason it is now saying sim not provisioned any ideas??

More info please. Did this occur while you were trying to set up the iPhone new, or while you already had it registered and working? If it was already set up and working when this happened, then go to the settings and reset the network settings. If this doesn't work then press and hold the power button and home button for about 10 seconds until the phone shuts off by itself and then reboots.

IPhone 3GS No SIM installed

Hi there, I cant get my iphone to activate since I installed iOS 5 last night, on any firmware on itunes it says 'Waiting For iPhone' and then says 'There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate' I have been trying to activate it on iTunes 10.3 with firmwares 4.1, 4.3.5 and iOS5 and this has come to no avail, I tried to do it with itunes 10.5 and that didnt work either. One thing I have noticed is that even without a SIM in it says either 'Searching' or 'No Service'. Has this problem got anything to do with the iPhone activation servers? This problem cannot be anything to do with the hardware because it was working fine on 4.3.5 before I updated.
My iphone is:
3GS White (new bootrom)
Baseband: 6.15
Carrier before update: 02
Part Number/Model: MC132B/A
A few thing, when my friend gave it to me, he did say it was unlocked. And I believe that is what caused error 1015 on every single one of my restores, which I fixed using a program called 'redsn0w' (this is a jailbreaking app, I ONLY used it to kick the device out of recovery mode, not install 'Cydia')

You'll have to contact AppleCare to find out who the original carrier was for your iPhone, and then contact that carrier to verify that it was an official unlock. Otherwise, the SIM card you're trying to use simply will not work and you'll have to get the carrier to unlock the iPhone for you. Receiving error 1015 means either your backups were created unsing an eariler version of iOS or that the phone was jailbroken; my money's on the latter.

Nach Freischaltung durch die Telekom und anschließender Softwareaktualisierung auf 5.01(fehlerfrei) wurde bei der Aktivierung von meinem iPhone 3Gs die Sim-Karte nicht mehr erkannt (Vodafone). Dadurch kann ich mein iPhone eigentlich nicht mehr nutzen. Was kann ich tun, damit ich es wieder als Telefon benutzen kann.

I made a backup copy by calling it "new."
Connect the "old" iphone. trying to recover - there is no "new" ...
maybe it because of what I'm doing from new to old.

Iphone 3GS, no service on 3G

If I enable 3G I get "No Service" but when turned to off I get a full EDGE signal, my father has the same phone as me and doesn't the the same problem, what is it likely to be?
Also to note I have just installed the very lastest update (4.3.3) however the problem started when I was on the old firmware (4.3.2)
My contract has ended and thought abotu just replacing it with something else, however I don't want an iPhone 4 as they will soon become obsilete, and I'm not paying £140 for an old phone when I can get a Samsung Galaxy S2 for free on the same contract. So I want to keep my 3GS untill the new iPhone comes out.

I also encountering the same problem. The last thing i did to my iphone 3gs was to remove the SIM card to another phone for testing. After placing it back to my iphone, my 3G shows "no service" while my 2G is still getting full bar signal. I tried replacing my SIM first, which didnt work well. I then tried with another SIM which also turned out to have this problem. I tried mounting my SIM on another phone andwas able to get full 3G Signal.
Since this is a hardware issue (antenna issue), I searched on ways to boost the antenna signal and found that the SIM card holder also play a part in affecting the signal!! (never knew that is possible).
I tried shim my SIM card from the back with a post it pad, didnt work. I tried inserting a piece of plastic (cut out from my new SIMs plastic card) on the end of the SIM to secure it. It gave me no service.
Beware not to get the plastic jamed in your SIM card reader.
I remove the plastic and place my SIM back and my 3G signal is back to full bar!!!
Conclusion, the SIM card placement can play a part in causing this intermittent 3G no signal. Iphone 3GS's SIM card try has quite a bit of clearance and that may allow the SIM card to be out of position. the SIM card reader's contact may have dirt particles on it. If your iphone is working fine, try not to remove the sim card.

Every time i connect it to itunes all it says is "There is no SIM card installed in the iphone you are attempting to activate." Even thought there is a sim card connected in my phone.

Is the SIM from a supported carrier?
Is the device carrier locked, officially unlocked, or hacked to be unlocked?
Has the SIM been reseated? If not, try that.
Also, basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore. Has any of that been tried?

No, I did not find a way to fix it. Went to Apple store to be told that the phone is dead and I would need to purchase a new phone. A little frustrated with the fact that it is Apple who caused the phone to not work!

The SIM cards are different sizes.
Just get a new one from your carrier, if the iphone does not already have one.
