IPhone 3GS not backing up to default hard drive location

Hi
I've just noticed that my iPhone 3GS has not backed up to %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup since November 2011. Whenever I connect the phone to my laptop, it appears to backup before syncing but I don't know where it's being saved. Right-clicking the iPhone in iTunes and selecting Restore from Backup... displays the backups from November 2011, plus the one 'created' when I connected the phone just now, but a new folder has not been created in the default location. I've searched the c:\ drive for all files and folders created today but no relevant items were retrieved.
It doesn't sync over wifi for some reason, which is only a minor inconvenience for me and I only mention it now in case it could be a related issue.
I read in another forum that the backup won't be stored locally if iCloud backup is enabled, but it isn't on my phone - the only setting enabled in this section is Find My iPhone, with iCloud Backup switched off in the Storage & Backup section.
I've got two other users of iTunes on this machine so I would rather not uninstall/reinstall unless absolutely necessary. The phone is running iOS 6.1.3 and iTunes is v. 11.0.2.26 (although as I keep it up-to-date, it's been through several versions since the last successful backup).
Any ideas?

Thanks for that, not sure how I missed that article. Renaming the backup folders gives me a workaround whenever I decide I want to backup, which got me through a 3GS > 4S upgrade, but I haven't found the root cause yet. I'll update this question if I manage to figure it out.

  • IPhone 3GS not backing up to iCloud

My iPhone 3GS has been updated to IOS5 but will not back up to iCloud. It keeps telling me to shut off airplane mode or connect to wifi to start the backup. I turn off airplane mode, and I've tried to connect to wifi, but it uses the 3G instead. I shut off the 3G and it still does not connect to wifi and continues on the 3 G network. it refuses to back up and has never been able to back up. Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?

If you get the message "Backup not successful",  I had the same problem.
My solution was to turn off some apps (Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap my device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options) and try a manual backup.  If it didn't work, turn off a few more apps and try a backup.  Keep doing that until the backup works.  Then try adding in some of the last batch of apps that were previously turned off - the objective is to find the app that causes the backup to fail.  For me, I suspect that the one app I found had a bad data file that, when included in the backup, caused the backup to quit.
This can be a long process if you have a lot of apps that you originally turned on for backups.

  • IPhone 3GS no longer syncing with external hard drive

Going to try this in a new thread as I had no answer to my reply in another discussion..... Here goes:
Okay, I have a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard in which I just updated iTunes to 10.4. My iTunes library is on an external hard drive.
I updated my iPhone to 4.3.4 and the syncing stopped working. It did not download all of my purchased items from the phone.
I get an error that it cannot write to the iPhone then get an error regarding some of the photos or music. Here is what I have done -
    I restored my iPhone
I removed all photos from the iPhone and uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes
I unplugged the external from my mini and then it did a sync just fine - course I wasn't syncing anything to it!
I plugged back in the external via Firewire which is what it was before and I get the errors.
I haven't done anything with the photos and it is syncing ringtones fine - it is not syncing tv shows or all music - it comes up with an error
I uninstalled 10.4 and reinstalled the previous version of iTunes and again - same thing.. I have switched out the external hard drive cable and plugged it into different locations
I am at my wits end - want my phone back
Prior to the latest iTunes update everything was fine but of course I hadn't updated the iPhone yet - so I don't know which update is now causing the problem although I'm thinking it's the iTunes update..
Any thoughts? Beyond frustrated at this point.

I see views but no replies I have no clue what to do with this problem..
    anybody?

  • Time Machine not backing up other external hard drive

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Leopard and am trying to use Time Machine. I have one external hard drive that is used specifically for the Time Machine Backup, it's called "Backup Drive". The other hard drive is called "Captured Memories" and is used to store my graphic design files. Time Machine seems to backup my iMac because there is a folder called iMac and it contains the files, but the folder for Captured Memories is blank. I was getting errors saying that the backup failed but when I clicked the "Back Up Now" option on Time Machine, it doesn't list the error - but the Captured Memories folder is still blank so it didn't back up that external drive. I also changed the Spotlight preferences so that it does not search the Backup Drive.
Both the Backup Drive and the Captured Memories drives are the same, they're both Seagate Free Agent Pro drives, 1TB each.
The Free Agent Pro drives both have a sleep timer that I cannot adjust, does that have anything to do with why Time Machine won't backup the Captured Memories drive? If that is the case, what other software can I use to backup the Captured Memories external drive? I want it to sync to the Backup Drive because I am constantly saving and moving files around on the Captured Memories drive.
I was using a Memeo backup software that came with the Free Agent Pro drives but the problem I was having is it would make copies of files rather than move them. For example, I have a folder on the Captured Memories drive that is called, In Progress and one that is called In Proofing. So once a project is complete, I move the file to the In Proofing folder. The Memeo software would copy the file to the In Proofing folder rather than move it. So I'd end up with 2 copies of the file, one in the In Progress folder and one in the In Proofing folder.
Does anyone know how I can simply have the drive backed up like that?
    What do I do?
Please help! I really need to make sure that the Captured Memories external drive is being backed up!

I am having a similar problem. I initially set it up 3 days ago and had it back up just the iMac to Time Capsule (about 120 GB) which it did no problem (I initially had my LaCie drive excluded). I then un-excluded my other drive, where all my photos and music reside (about 130 GB). Since then, it keeps trying to back up about 102 GB each time. Looking at the list of backups it does not appear that it has ever successfully backed up the LaCie. I am not aware of any error messages, but I have not been home much. I normally shut down the computer at night but I have been leaving it on trying to let Time Machine do its thing. All I can say is that every time I am at the computer TM is running and it always looks like it is in the middle of backing up 102 GB (usually seems to be near the beginning, never seem to see it more than halfway done). Looking at the TM panel it says the latest backup was 2 days ago. I'd appreciate any advice!

  • Time machine not backing up my external hard drive

I tried removing my external hard drive from the excluded list which is available in "option"(time machine prefrences)... but it just does not back the external HD on the time machine hard disk... it does not give any message, when I open options back I still find the HD in the list which I have already removed from there... i recently upgraded to mountain lion, it all worked fine in snow leopard before... please help!

Sorry, i don't have an anwser, but i have a similar sounding issue...
I've been using TM to back up both my Mac HD and a Western Digital 'My Book' 1TB containing data (music, videos etc.) to a second WD My Book 2TB for ages - and it has been working fine... then about mid july i up graded my Mac hardware and alos to ML and did a full migrate etc. now, the HD backs up fine but the external 1TB My Book doesn't - i 'see' the drive volume in the backups folder but there's no content...
I'll let you know if i find out more.

  • Time Machine not backing up both internal hard drives on 2011 iMac?

I have a 2011 iMac with two internal hard drives---a 2TB HDD and 256GB solid state.
I plugged in a 3TB FW800 external to use with Time Machine.
Based on adding up the used space from both drives as seen in disk utility (totalling 1537.36 GB), it doesn't appear that Time Machine is backing everything up (total backup of 1.49 TB).
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Taylor

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo tmutil compare
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Where is the default hard drive location for an ipod backup?

Where is the default location on a Window hard drive for iPod backups?
    Thanks!

Where are iTunes backups stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data is stored depends on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your data-backup routine. iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press Return.

  • IPhone 3GS not backing up to iCloud after iOS update

I updated the phone to 5.1.1 the phone light shut off so it's pretty hard to see the screen. It's basically on its last leg, which is why I want to back it up. I've tried plugging it in, locking it and connecting it to wifi like it told me and several other techniques for it to back up. It shows it starting  to back up and gives me the message 'estimated time remaining" underneath. I had it do this all day yesterday and all night last night. The back up didn't budge at all. Is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it? And is anyone elses' LED light just stop working?

  • TIme Machine will not back up to External Hard Drive

I reinstalled Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini after having some issues. After reinstallation, Time Machine would no longer backup to my External HD because it will not allow me to change permissions. I right click on my "Backup" drive and change the permissions to Read + Write but it just sets it back to "Custom". I'm guessing that the reinstallation changed my account information but I'm not sure how to fix this. My External HD shows in Disk Utility that it is still almost full of Time Machine backups but I have no way to access them or to continue to use Time Machine for future backups. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

What message did you get? You should never change permissions (or anything else) on a Time Machine drive -- TM does that for you.
Start with #C2 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.
If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • Can I recover photos on iPhone 4S not backed up on iCloud or computer when connect to iTunes error shows up on screen. Was trying to update now it must go to restore.HELP!

Can I recover photos on iPhone 4S not backed up on iCloud or computer when connect to iTunes error shows up on screen? My son was trying to update now it must go to restore. HELP!

If there is no backup of the device to iCloud or iTunes and the device has gone into recovery mode when trying to update, then the data is gone. If the device was connected to iTunes to do the update originally, it is possible the default backup was done, unless your son disabled it. To check to see if there is a backup, go in iTunes, click on Edit, Preferences, Devices and see if there is a backup listed for the date/time before the update was started. If he was doing the update OTA on the phone, then there is no backup. No backup, no photos.

  • HT201263 plz help me iphone 3gs not open

plz help me iphone 3gs not open

    Hello gurpreet17,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone.
I recommend following steps 2-6 for an issue like the one you described:
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
You can find the full article here:

If you get to step 5, I recommend backing up your iPhone before performing the restore:

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.
How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.

  • HT4910 my iPhone is not backing up to iCloud. On iTunes on the computer, i have set it to back-up to iCloud and after each connection to the computer it shows the last time it was backed up, but on the phone itself it shows it hasn't been backed up for we

My iphone is not backing up to icloud even though on itunes i have set it to back up to icloud. whenever i do a cable connection between my iphone and mac at the end of the exercise it indicates the last time the iphone was backed up i.e. "last back: 9.08a.m. but on the iphone itself it says it hasn't been backed up since March and on icloud there hasn't been any back up because the latest additions to the iphone are not there.
Periodically i get this message "This iphone has not been backed up ... weeks" I have followed through with all the steps and still no joy. I did however notice that my icloud email account on the iphone is different to the one i have on the computer. It would apear that I am using the two interchanagably but i have been trying to correct this so that i"ll use the same one right through.
Might this be the problem and how can i resolve it? Pls help

If this is your first time backing up your phone then yeah it might take several hours. It's definitely something you want to do before you head to bed. So try that but also make sure that your contents that are to be backed up are less than 5GB since iCloud only has 5GB of space. Usually photos are what would take up the most space so check how many photos in terms of GB you have by going into settings->general->usage then look at photos and camera.
    Hope this works!
