I HAVE A IPHONE 3GS WHICH I BUYED FROM EBAY IT WAS USED IN USA WITH AT&T FOR A YEAR .BUT SINCE I LIVE IN INDIA I WANT TO OFFICIALLY UNLOCK IT SO THAT I CAN USE IT WITH INDIAN CARRIERS.SO IS THERE A WAY I CAN UNLOCK MY PHONE OFFICIALLY .
PLEASE TELL ME HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO UNLOCK IT

when you buy an apple iphone from ebay you must insist on iphone that was originally sold by a UK carrier or the carrier that supports unlocking.
Unlocking is dependent on carrier networks that are in agreement with Apple.
apple under no circumstances will unlock an iphone that is not supported
for unlocking. such as AT&T in US don't sell unlocked iphones.

Hello - I recently had my iPhone 3GS Officially unlocked by following the AT&T Unlock Program.
The iPhone was previously running iOS 4.1 (8B117). After I did the restore to iOS 6.0.1 using iTunes. iTunes displays a message, saying its unable to complete the activation at this time. So i gave it a few hours and tried again, but I still get the same error message.
Can anyone please help me, fix this?
P.S: I am trying to use a AIRTEL (India) SIM in the phone.

Was it hacked or jailbroken BEFORE you requested a legitimate unlock from AT&T?
If so, the hack has rendered it unable to process the legitimate unlock.

Outside of the US, some carriers sold unlocked iPhone 3GSs as per the laws of the country in which they operated. At no time has the iPhone 3GS (or any iPhone prior to the iPhone 4) been available unlocked in the US, nor will it be unlocked. You can pay full retail price or complete a contract term, but no iPhone will be unlocked by AT&T. You can buy an unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple and use it any where, but you will pay full retail price for the phone.
Next time do a search before you post a question. There are hundreds (not an exaggeration) of threads and responses to this question.

I live in the UK and paid £440 back in February, had it officially unlocked via the network o2 for £15. So if you find a legit UK Ebayer selling an o2 officially unlocked iPhone, you should be safe. Ask the seller questions for reassurance. The reason why I say this cos I bought a phone EBay once that turned out to be jailbroken, luckily the seller took it back and refunded me.

My IPhone 3GS is unlocked and i went to update the software and it said that an unknown error has occurred and said it needed to be restored to connect with Itunes. When i got to restore it, it gets about 3/4 of the way done, says an unknown error(1015)

Unfortunately, the only other way is to update the phone. If it is not officially unlocked, then it will relock.
According to this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937 about the wireless carriers, if the phone was purchased in UAE, it very well may be locked to a carrier and it does not show that they provide unlocking services.

Iphone 3GS Factory Unlocked with Orange in France Not working.

So the story is as follows.
I was working in France for the last few months on a ship. The engineer i was working with recived an iPhone from Orange as a bonus on his plan. He did not want the phone so he gave it to me. We talked to orange and had it unlocked. I did not use it as a phone while working as i had no real need for it. Nor did i want it to go for an accidental swim.
I have now returned home to Australia. With what I thought was a factory unlocked Iphone 3Gs. I restored the iphone firmware to Iphone OS 3.1.3 placed my optus Sim Card in to the iphone and connected it to my computer.
I am greeted with the following message:
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card."
I called the apple support line and i was told that without the orginal sim card there was nothing i could do.
I can not get the SIM card of the engineer as he is in france. I can still use the shipping agent to get in contact with orange.
If anyone knows of a solution to this problem it would be much apppreciated as right now i have shiny paperweight.

It sounds like it was never unlocked by Orange in the first place and without his SIM you can do nothing.
Optus cannot do anything for you as only the original carrier can unlock it and that requires the original SIM card.
Its a brick until you return to France with the SIM card and then probably pay to get it unlocked - I can't recall if they do official unlocking there but its pretty likely.

I thought this was an exceptional case. It was originally factory unlocked. Being stolen it underwent the changes and came back to the original owner. Police records are available to confirm.

I would be greatful of any advice for my problem. I have bought an iPhone 3GS from my friend who had it locked to O2. She has had it since new and never jailbroken it.
I have just got it factory unlocked and also have not jalibroken the phone. When I restored the phone I got the congratulatory message on iTunes, and it shows the correct phone number for the SIM I want to use and the carrier listed in Settings>General>About is now correct too.
I am now receiving no signal whatsoever. I have tried restoring network settings, restoring the whole phone again, toggling airplane mode, removing the sim and reinserting when off/ on etc and nothing is changing. Whenever I put my SIM my old phone, it's picking up signal absolutely fine.
If anyone has any other advice, I would be very grateful.

If the Unlock was NOT done through O2... then that would be the cause of your issue.

Hey, I have recently moved from Canada to the Netherlands, and my iPhone came along. I'm now stuck with an iPhone that has sim lock, so I can't use it.
I don't want to jailbreak it and risk it getting bricked, but I read about an official unlock that's used by apple. Does anyone have more information about this and about how I can get my phone unlocked?

Which is what people have been telling you. I think things are getting tangled up in terminology. Apple cannot and does not unlock any iPhone on their own initiative. If an iPhone is locked to a carrier, that carrier must provide Apple with the unlock code which Apple then distributes to your iPhone via iTunes.
As everyone has been advising you, you will need to contact the carrier to whom the iPhone is locked and ask them whether they have a program for unlocking the iPhone. The latest information from Apple is that none of the Canadian carriers offer unlocking services, but call the carrier to confirm.
