Iphone 3gs vs 4s ... still trying to decide?!

i'm still trying to decide whether or not i want to upgrade my iphone from 3gs to 4s.  i mean outside of the advertised differences (siri, better camera, front facing camera, flash, better hardware/speed/battery life/etc), are there any other differences?
i'm still pretty happy with my good 'ol 3gs iphone and since it was eligible to upgrade to ios5, i don't necessarily feel like i'm missing out on much...yet.
i've read rumors that the NEXT iphone will be even more dramatically different, but i don't know when that may come out and what new features there may be.  i'm a little wary of getting locked into another 2 year contract just to miss out for another year or two on something else more spectacular.
anyone have any thoughts or find other features that i may be missing out on?

The iPhone 4S has no more new features than the jump between the 3GS and the 4. The only difference is that the 4 was a complete redesign which made it seem like it was radically different. All it had was upgraded internal specs, front facing camera, retina display, led flash, and gyro. This has upgraded internal specs, highly improved camera, world phone, 1080p video recording, siri. From the 3G to 3GS there was a compas, video recording, upgraded internal specs, etc. So the "feature" jump isn't any different between iPhone devices. If your phone is still working and you are happy, then you don't need an upgrade. Just be prepared to compromise some features. For example, I had an iPhone 3G which I just upgraded to a 4S. My 3G was maxed out at iOS 4.1. So don't assume your 3GS will receive all features and all updates to iOS 5. The real question you have to access yourself is do you want a new phone now or do you want to wait a year give or take a month or two for a even newer phone. Keep in mind that when you buy that phone it will be only about a year until the NEXT iPhone comes out so if you keep waiting you'll never get a phone. I hope this information helps you in your decision.

  • New to Apple - Need help.  Here is the breakdown. I just got my wife a iPhone 4s and I'm trying to decide how to set it up. Should she get her own Apple ID or use mine? This for some reason is very confusing to me.

Here is the breakdown.  I just bought my wife a new iPhone 4s and I'm trying to decide how to set it up for her.  Should she have her own Apple ID or use mine?  If she uses my Apple ID, will that cause issues with iMessage - say when I'm chatting with someone else and vice a versa. Will our messages show up on each others devices?  How will a FaceTime call work?  Will the video call come across both our devices (ipad also)?
Just some information that might be of note:
I have the new iPhone 4s, iPad2 and one iTunes account - the iTunes account is my Apple ID which I use also for the iCloud (I think...it's getting murky
What am I trying to achieve is having the ability for me (iphone, ipad) and my wife (iphone) to be able to share and sync just music, apps, movies, etc...  I have Google Calender and I have not made up my mind yet if we will share a contacts list (I have large business list).  Also this might be of note, I most likely will be using iTunes on my LG LCD TV (appleTV) at some point in the near future.
So, basically I'm confused, which is not unusual for me.  If I'm thinking to much inside the box, please let me know and feel free to offer up any suggestions.  Even if the suggestion is I'm not asking the right questions.  Of course if that is your suggestion, then please tell me the question.  And an answer would be nice to.
    Thanks.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

I continue to get an error 37 message when trying to restore my iphone 3GS which crashed after trying to upload the last update. Does anyone else have this problem?

Did you manage to fix the issue?
I have exactly the same issue as described above : I installed the update 5.1.1 on my iphone 3GS and since then, I can not turn it on anymore. In Itunes, I get an error 37 when I am doing a restauration and it stops.
This error has nothing to do with firewall : I tried to restore the phone on several computers, including in an Apple reseller and it did not work anywhere.
I spent several hours on phone with the hotline from Apple which arrived to the conclusion that it is a hardware issue, but the phone was working perfectly fine until I installed this update!

  • HT4623 How do I install the iOS 4.3 on my iPhone 3GS ? I've tried direct links but it says safari cannot install this ? Please help !

How do I install the iOS 4.3 on my iPhone 3GS ? I've tried direct links but they it says safari cannot install this ? Please help !

You can not install anything but the current version of iOS. If you have a 3Gs, then you can install 6.0.1 by plugging it into your computer running iTunes (10.7 or higher).  If you have a 3G, 4.2.1 is the end of the line.

I have just bought iPhone 3gs in Sept.11. I was trying to update the software using itunes but it is showing Error "-3259" saying  connection timeout. Please help.

Did you already check your securit software settings? iTunes has to contact Apple during the update process.

  • Iphone 3GS white screen, still after reset. I DIDNT GET IT WET?

I hit a dirt jump on my bmx bike with my phone in my pocket and fell. Not to hard but i guess hard enough to make the screen turn white ;[. So after googling the issue i found out i should try to reset it. After restating the phone several times the white screen still stayed there. It sometimes had faint Rainbow vertical lines. I can still use my phone because it vibrates and rings when i call it. The touch screen still works to. But the ***** screen is white. So i was thinking if i replaced it with a new digitizer and lcd screen *http://cgi.ebay.com/iPhone-3Gs-full-LCD-digitizer-screen-replacement-/2507962423 17?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3a649ef58d* it might work. Am i right? If i drop 50 bucks on this and its still broken im gonna be ***** pist.
The lcd screen doesn't seem broken, when i disassembled the phone there wasn't any obvious tears or scratches.

how would you recondmend selling it for parts? And do you honestly think its worth a try buying that item i linked in my first post? i can get a gold back housing and gold metal trim thing for cheap. Would those new aditions make it sell for more and if so would i get profit over the money i spent in parts?

  • Iphone 3gs is unrecoverable.  Trying to sync itunes with 3g

my iphone 3gs with the most recent os (as of 8/24/11) stopped working and wasn't recoverable.  I bought a 3g and when I try to restore it and then sync with my old settings in itunes, I get this message
"To restore this iPhone from this backup, you must first set up the iPhone as new and restore the software to the latest version."
It seems as though the profile I saved on itunes for  my 3gs is a newer os and therefore the 3g can't accept it.  Is there a way around this so that I can have my old sync back?
    Thanks

    Two mistakes.
    1) You don't need to re-install your operating system.  I haven't re-installed mine since 2006 (9 years) and my computer works fine.
    2) You deleted the iTunes library.  A phone will sync with the library to which it was last synced or will have to be erased.  You no longer have that library unless you have a backup copy and will have to erase the phone. Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new library you transfer the library or content from an old computer or a backup directly to the new library, not the device to the library. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • How does one add a personal recorded M4R file to the ring tones in the UK system for iPhone 3GS

How does one add a personal recorded M4R file to the ring tones in the UK system for iPhone 3GS.
I have tried all sorts of ways of adding my personal M4R file but can't find the place (within the UK versions of iTunes} to transfer this file so that I can select it as a ring tone.
I've tried also changing to the US version of iTunes and still can't find a way of doing it, although I have heard that it can be done.

You should be able to just drop it into the library within iTunes.

Check out the video above for a lot good info. The ringtone must be less than 35 seconds.

  • Re: "no service" on iPhone 3Gs (version 4.3.2), my 3 kids all have iPhone 4 (version 4.1) with no issues! We are all with the same carrier (vodafone) and live in the same location. Please help me fix this!

My iPhone 3Gs (version 4.3.2) has decided to no longer connect to my service provider/carrier (vodafone AU). There are 3 iPhone 4's (version 4.1) using the same carrier living in the same location, having no related issues. I have thought about updating firmware or restoring the iPhone, but not sure if thats the way to go?? My iPhone starts out recognising my carrier....searches & searches... but then.... connection "FAILS" and states "my network provider is no longer available"!!  Any suggestions?...please!!

Anyone at all can advise- still not sorted :-(

  • Problem with updating iPhone 3gs

Can someone help? I am trying to update my old iPhone 3gs 8gig. Still on iOS4, and need to update it to iOS6. Because it's still on iOS 4 i can only update via iTunes, however, as soon as i start the update download, it runs up until the last few megabytes and then it just quits, and the update has to be downloaded all over again only to get to 784 of the 786mb download and it quits again...i am using a wifi network, so it cant be the connection...
    Any suggestions?

You can do a google and find out how to download the file from another source, then also find out how to manually update your phone.   It isn't hard, and maybe that will get you going.
