Iphone 3GS will not update from 4.3.3 to 5.0

I have a 3GS iphone and been trying to update to 5.0 but can't. I was able to update itunes to 10.0 does anybody know why?

If you don't use multitasking and read this article, I think you will be fine: http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

  • My 3GS will not update from 4.2.1 - I am using iTunes 10.3.1

I have been having signal issues and ATT advised me that my phone needed an update. I told them that iTunes said I was up to date but the said that 4.3 was the most current iOS. After checking I saw that they were indeed correct, but when I sync my phone and click "Check for Update" it says that my version (4.2.1) is the current version. HELP!!!!!
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium
    My iTunes version is 10.3.1

If you back up your phone beforehand and transfer purchases, you can force the phone into recovery mode which will restore the phone but it will also force iTunes to download the most recent version of the iOS compatible with your phone. Once you have everything backed up and transferred, unplug from the computer, turn the phone off completely (make sure you slide to power off) and then hold the home button as you plug it into the computer.  Usually you'll be holding it for 10-15 seconds or so and then the phone will show the connect to iTunes graphic and the computer will say iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.  It will have to update it then and you can restore from your backup afterwards and resync everything as usual.
On the other hand, are you sure that you have a 3GS and not a 3G?  The 3G can only go up to 4.2.1 so that would be normal behaviour.

  • IPhone 3GS will not update or restore

Got my iphone 3gs replaced under warranty, the new iphone will sync everything as normal, however it will not restore, also when i press check for software update i get this message:
"the iphone software update server could not be contacted."
"make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later"
i have tried putting into recovery mode and dfu mode via the wake/sleep button & the home button, but i get no joy i get same message.
i have tried uninstalling and disabling my firewall no luck there
i have tried everything everybody else has tried and still no luck.
    i un-installed itunes and re-installed with latest version 9.2.1.5.
i also tried updating itunes via help then update and i got following message:
"the itunes server could not be contacted. please check your internet connection, or try again later".
this has been happening since yesterday since i tried to put iphone in dfu mode, cos on the net i found a few people saying if you put in dfu and do a full firmware update it wipes everything off iphone, then restore via itunes back up and you should get better battery life and performance using the IOS4.
now on my other iphones i had, 3g and iphone 4, these features worked perfectly, i am now very cheesed off and can't even restore normally let alone in dfu mode.
since getting the replacement 3gs it is the first time i have checked these features so i don't know if it could be the iphone itself.

Its now working, i think it had something to do with talk talk and apple.

  • HT4972 iPhone 3GS will not update to IOS 5

iPhone 3GS, which should be compatible with IOS 5, will not upgrade.  I have synced with iTunes and it says there are no further updates, and there are no software updates available on the phone, and yet in the 'about' section of General Settings it says it is running version 4!!
How do I get it to update to IOS 5 if iTunes is telling me there are no more software updates!?
    Thanks

    Hi
Yes, upon checking the model number it looks as though it is actually an iPhone 3G!!  The box said 3GS but I think my friend must have given me the wrong box!
    Thanks, issue solved!

  • My 3GS will not update from 4.1.

When I connect my iPhone and click update, a message pops up saying  that I have the most current version of iTunes.  And it keeps showing that a newer version (4.3.3) is available.  It is an ATT phone.  Thank you for any assistance.

    1) restart itunes
    2) restart the Iphone by holding down the "sleep/wake" button simultaneously w/ the "home" button and try again

  • IPhone 3GS will not update to 3.1.3 - err = -3259

Running: iTunes 9, Win XP, ESET Smart Security,
Try to download 3.1.3 when prompted and download starts and runs to 291 of 291 MB and a few seconds later the message appears with Network Timed Out - check connections or talk to your administrator: err = -3259 appears in the download window of iTunes
I have tried the download/update with ESET disabled, with ESET on interactive mode (allowing network traffic with prompting) and with ESET on. No success in any mode.
I was able to update the carrier software with ESET on.
iTunes (and all other apple software as per apple's recommendation) was reinstalled
iPhone syncs when plugged in (after prompting software update available)
iTunes diagnostic shows everything is working fine
I have already restarted iPhone, but I am trying to avoid restoring iPhone.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks deggie, I had another look at what I was disabling in ESET and found that I needed to disable the firewall and all of the antivirus and spyware functions as well. Once ESET was completely disabled the update was possible.
    Cheers,
    t

  • Iphone 3gs will not activate after restore and update

my sons iphone 3gs will not activate after restore and ios update.
phone keeps saying no service but worked fine before restore and update any ideas ? thanks

Sorry. The jailbreak is undoubtedly the root cause of your problem.
It is not always possible to repair the damage done by jailbreaking.
Try searching google for an answer, but be prepared to just buy a new phone.

  • HT201401 iphone 3gs will not come on and message 21 appears saying phone in recovery mode. no updating or anything else was done. phone was on table all day

iphone 3gs will not come on. tried to restore message 21 appears. phone will not come on or charge or do anything. phone has been sitting on table all day

If your phone is in recovery mode, you've already lost ALL of the data on the phone. Your only choice now is to restore it from your most recent backup. You follow this by syncing your content back to your phone. Any data, on your phone, not backed up or in supported applications on your computer, is gone. iTunes content you can re-download for free.

  • My iPhone will not update from version 4.1

My iPhone will not update from version 4.1, everytime I try to update on the iTunes iPhone screen, the response says "your iTunes version is current"....I am not trying to update iTunes, I just want to update my iPhone. How do I fix this?

You must purchase 10.5.8 from an Apple store, either in person or online. You can also update to 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) if you have an Intel Mac. The current version is Lion, (10.7), but you must have Snow Leopard installed to upgrade to Lion. You also need an Intel Mac.

  • FIXED (for me at least): iPhone 3gs will not sync with Gateway NV79

I’ve spent months trying to fix this miserable problem with getting my iPhone 3gs to sync with my new Gateway NV79. Gateway will not help. Their technical support is genuinely worthless. Microsoft blames Apple and Apple blames Gateway.
My old iPod Nano syncs to my Gateway NV79 without a problem. I’ve tried all of the proposed fixes but other posters with no success.
But I do believe I’ve discovered a real fix (for me at least). Here’s my setup:
    • Gateway NV79 running Windows 7 64 bit edition
    • iTunes 10
    • iPhone 3gs running OS 4.02
The USB ports needs tweaking to get the iPhone 3gs to sync to the Gateway NV79. Follow these steps without your iPhone 3gs connected to the Gateway NV79:
Step 1: Go to Control Panel
    1. Open Control Panel
    2. Click Hardware & Sound
    3. Click Power Options
    4. Make sure Balanced is selected and click Change Plan Settings
    5. Click Change advanced power settings
    6. Expand USB Settings
    7. Expand USB selective suspend setting
    8. Change On Battery setting to Disabled.
    9. Change Plugged in setting to Disabled
    10. Click OK
Step 2: Go to Windows Explorer
    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Right-Click Computer (not your computer name)
    3. Click Properties
    4. Click Device Manager
    5. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
    6. Right-click first Generic USB Hub
    7. Click Properties
    8. Click Power Management
    9. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
    10. Click OK
    11. Right-click second Generic USB Hub
    12. Click Properties
    13. Click Power Management
    14. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
    15. Click OK
    16. Restart your computer
After your computer restarts, login and connect your iPhone.
You must complete both steps. Step 1 is required for Step 2 to stick.
There are a few things that may happen. iTunes may start syncing immediately and fail with an error. Don’t worry. If the sync fails the first time, restart the computer with the iPhone still connected. Now, iTunes will either take you to setup screen to connect your iPhone or the sync may restart. In my case, the setup screen came up and I DID NOT CHOOSE TO RESTORE. Pick the first option to add your iPhone. The sync will restart and may or may not finish. Don’t worry, if the sync fails, restart your computer again with the iPhone still connected and this time the sync will work.
Here’s the problem: the iPhone 3gs will not sync with the power management enabled for the USB ports on the Gateway NV79.
    Good luck.

If you cannot update your computer, you will not be able to sync your phone. The requirements are:
    Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.1 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access

  • IPad 2 will not update from version 4.3.5 (8L1).

I got an iPad 2 from work and it will not update from version 4.3.5. There isn't even a software update option in settings. I have reset and erased it a few times, and still no update option. I have plugged it into my computer to try to update it that way and every time iTunes prompts me to download and update the latest version, it loads for a few seconds and then I get an iTunes message that says "The IPad software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your newtwork connection is active, or try again later." the network connection IS active, I can use safari, and I have "tried again later" and still no update. PLEASE HELP!

  • Iphone 3Gs will not sync to itunes

My iPhone 3Gs will not sync to my iTunes on my PC.  I updated to the new iOS software 6.1.3 to see if that made a difference and it did not.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Ken

Tim, it was going through the motions but when it went to sync to songs it completed the process in less than 5 seconds.  And I have over 1700 songs I was trying to sync.  ooops !!    I just figured it out right after I posted the above post.  When on the "Summary" tab down at the bottom it was checked "only sync checked songs" .  Once I unchecked it, it started syncing fine.  SORRY !  :-)

  • My iPhone 5 will not update iOS 7.0.6 what do I do?

My iPhone 5 will not update the iOS 7.0.6 !  I'm plugged in, & have wifi. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

iOS- Unable to update or restore
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
Have you tried connecting to your computer and updating via iTunes?
You may have to do a full restore to upgrade:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
If you have a problem getting into recovery mode then try: RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
