Iphone 3gs wont restore or sync music on my computer, driving me crazy!!

hi everyone, just going to post my problem here and see if anyone has any advice or tips for me.
i have an iphone 3GS and am using a pc with windows xp. i have never been able to sync my phone with itunes 9 and above so after updating software on my iphone i had to go back to itunes 8.2 wich was fine. when iphone os4 was released i updated itunes to 9.2 and tried to install the new hardware, didnt work and i needed to restore my iphone. couldnt do this on my pc so took the phone to my parents computer and restored it fine on there. get back home and plugged my iphone, sync'd it up with a backup no problems but when i tried to sync music it gives me an error 'could not sync iphone, the disk could not be read'. it does the backup fine and gets to syncing the first song, gets halfway through that first one and sits there for 20 minutes before bringing up this error.
i have been googling this for days trying to find a solution have tried uninstalling itunes, reinstalling, but nothing seems to fix it. i am able to sync the music from my parents computer onto the iphone but would really like to use my own music collection!! any tips would be VERY appreciated.
thanks

OK it sounds like the USB ports re OK, the only other thing I would mention with them, for the moment, make sure you are using the ones on the back of the computer.
Without knowing your machine, sometimes the USB ports on the front are linked via card readers or are front ports on the motherboard, etc and are not high power ports, where as the ones on the back are definitely high power ports.
I have seen many times over the years where clients have come to me saying their external hard drives are faulty, and they plugging them into low power USB ports or into USB hubs and they connect fine, but once they start transferring a lot of information, the lock up or fail during the process as the voltage is dragged down.
I don't know if that would make a difference to a nano, I don't have one of them, but I would expect a nano and iphone to need similar power requirements when syncing.
So at the moment, play it safe and just use the ones on the back until we get the issue solved.
We also need to discount any conflicts between what you have installed on your PC and against iTunes. I don't think this is going to be an issue as you are already syncing another device, but at the same time we need to eliminate the possibility.
If you know how to use MSCONFIG thats good but not essential. We want to stop startup items and services that are not Apple, these include Security Software, CD/DVD software and pretty much anything else you have installed on your computer during it's life. Most software manufacture's write code into their software to start up parts of it when starting your computer. Some of it is essential, eg Security, most of it is a waste of time. The reason they do it is so their software will start up quickly when you want to use it, but if you rarely use it, then all it is really doing is slowing down the boot time of the computer.
So Apple have this trouble shooting page here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1275 and I need you to go through this and follow the steps so as we can discount this part.
Now be careful, write down what you are turning off, so as later you know what to turn back on and also be aware that you will also be temporarily turn off your security software so exercise some caution and don't open attachments on emails etc while its off.
If you find that the phone now syncs, with these startup items and services turn off, then we know we have a software conflict, and then you start turning things back on one by one, starting with your security software and testing the syncing each time.
Now I have to go, Germany and Argentina are about to start their game, so good luck and get back to me with you results.

  • IPhone 3GS wont restore, missing music

Nothing but problems with my new iPhone 3GS
Firstly after the second sync all the music was replaced with "Other" data - and the iPhone was saying it had no music content. Tried resyncing it with iTunes and got the message that there was not enough space on the iPhone.
Then attempted a restore - but it gets stuck after downloading the software update while verifying the restore with apple. The message is Unable to restore - unknown error.
So I now have an iPhone which is unusable and stuck in recovery mode.
Also tried restoring on both my imac and macbook pro but both return the same problem.
Im now very disappointed and back to using my old nokia until I can get this sorted out - any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Isaac

    An update:
Spoke with the iPhone technical support today who found that the error message my iTunes is generating is because iTunes cannot connect to the apple server - which is strange cause i've always been able to use iTunes normally. Suggested that I open ports 80 and 443, and check I can ping gs.apple.com (which I could).
Opening port 80 was difficult. After setting the port forwarding on the router (and even placing it in a DMZ just to be sure) the port was still not open and because of leopards firewall required being manually edited in terminal with:
sudo ipfw -q add 10 allow tcp any to any 80 in
sudo ipfw -q add 20 allow tcp any to any 80 out
However doing the same with port 443 (and turning back to my mac off - which I think normally listens on this port) I was still unable to open this port.
iPhone support thinks its a problem with the mac firewall seeing I cannot connect to their servers (despite being able to use and download etc from the itunes store), imac support thinks its the ISP, and my ISP thinks its either of the apple products - they assure me that the only port they close at the ISP end is port 25 and with the computer in a DMZ then its not their issue.
    In addition:
    tried the suggestions above
-holding down sleep/home, then home etc
    -connecting whilst holding down home
-creating a new user account and attempting to restore from there
-deleting itunes application and the AppleMobileDevice files then reinstalling
Either way, and after a half day of googling, an aspirin, and being handballed around between apples various support departments i'm still back at square one with an iphone / paperweight "unable to verify restore with apple - unknown error (3014)".
Hope someone has some suggestions - apple is clueless about this it seems. Im sure there must be more people with an iPhone stuck in recovery mode having the same problem.
Apple suggested that I take the phone back to Vodafone in NZ and have them restore it - dosnt fix the problem though. This happened on the second day of use - probably going to happen again - and what if I need to do another restore sometime?
    Thanks

  • I Have an Iphone 3gs and have problems syncing music and podcasts

I have had my phone now for around 15 months and have not had previous problems with it.
I synced my phone today and it has cleared all music and podcasts from it and will not allow me to resync - apps are syncing fine.
It is a 32GB phone but on summary page it now says its capacity is only 4GB
Any ideas on what I have done or how to fix?
    Thanks

If you're talking about "regular" icloud, then setting it up should have no effect on your music.  Try syncing the device to iTunes and check the music settings and sync again.
If you subscribe to iTunes Match, is the device in wifi range?

  • My Iphone 3gs wont charge, turn on, or restore itself in Itunes, but the apple logo still appears when I hold the sleep botton.  How can I make my Iphone work????

My Iphone 3gs wont charge, turn on, or restore itself in Itunes, but the apple logo still appears when I hold the sleep botton.  How can I make my Iphone work????  I know it is not dead because I can see the apple logo on, and every time I connect it to a USB port to charge, or a wall charger, the battery appears with a bit of red. Still, it wont turn on.  It's been like this for three days now and I haven't stopped charging it.  IT just WONT charge?  Any tips I can use to solve the issue?

    Hello estebie67,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the iPhone is experiencing issues upon startup, and may not be loading the firmware or operating system correctly. If you have not already done so, try resetting the iPhone while connected to power:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If the above does not resolve your issue, it will be best to restore the iPhone in recovery mode:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • My laptop died out of the blue. It included all the songs that I have ever owned. How do I sync my iPhone 3GS and save all my music?

How do I sync my iPhone 3Gs without losing all my music. I didn't buy all my music on iTunes. A lot of songs were from cds which I no longer have in my possession.
    Please advise.

One of the reasons why including your iTunes library with your computer's backup along with all other important data is a good idea. The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod, iPad, or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
There are some 3rd party paid utilities that provide for transferring content that was not purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPhone.

  • My 3gs wont restore after ios 5 update. I have tried firmware restore and restore from backup, neither works. All I get is "iphone restore failed because backup session failed" Any ideas on how to make a successful restore with this ios 5 update?

My 3gs wont restore after ios 5 update. I have tried firmware restore and restore from backup, neither works. All I get is "iphone restore failed because backup session failed" Any ideas on how to make a successful restore with this ios 5 update?

I was having the same problem, I backed up my phone and then updated to iOS 5 and then it kept telling me it could not restore from my backup as it had failed.  After reading a bunch of forums and posts and trying everything, I did manage to get it to work.  I had tried the Time zone, creating a new computer user account, disabling anti-virus, etc.
It took a combination of things, one of which was disabling the anti-virus completely and copying the contents of the backup folder to my desktop and then deleting everything in the backup folder.  Then I rebooted the PC, entirely disabled the anti-virus, copied the one backup I wanted to restore from the desktop to the backup folder and then trying to restore.  Low and behold the phone said restoring from backup and I am back in business, so when in doubt, trying combining some of the fixes together.

  • I cannot get my IPhone 3gs to restore to my last backup?

I had an issue with IPhone 3gs earlier so I synced and backed-up the phone and then attempted to restore the phone to see if I could eliminate the problem. After the restore and software update, it brought me to the "Set up your IPhone" page and I selected "restore from the last backup on my iphone" then clicked "continue." It started to restore from backup and everything appeared to be running like normal, but when it was finished and my phone restarted, my apps and songs were deleted but my pictures/wallpapers/contacts were still on the phone. In addition, instead of my itunes returning to my Iphone's library, it returned to the "Set up your IPhone" page like the restore never happened. I have tried to restore from backup multiples times after that but I end up with the same result so I cannot access my iphone's library on my itunes to add any of my songs back since the restore didn't bring any of it back. Does anyone know of a way to solve this issue? I've been able to restore my iphone successfully in the past and have never experienced this problem before so I have no idea as to how I can fix it. I hope I have explained it in a way that is easy to understand and I hope someone possibly knows how to help me.
    Thank you.

When you connect your iPad or iPod to the Mac, click on the device name in iTunes - don't click on the arrow on the device. Then click on the Music tab in the main window pane. Now you should see 'Sync Music' and all your playlists, artists and albums. Here you mark the checkboxes for what should be synced.

  • My iphone 3gs wont send or recieve calls but sms is working

My iphone 3gs wont send or recieve calls but sms is working.Signal is good & plenty of credit

First step is to clean the iPhone charging port with a clean dry toothbrush, also use a bit of Isopropyll Alcohol, and clean especially the pins which are on top of the dock midrib.
Let it dry for a minute. Then open iTunes on computer, then connect iPhone to computer, then hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone is recognized by iTunes in Recovery Mode. Usually about 20 seconds time of holding both buttons. Restore the iPhone Firmware.

  • My iphone 3gs wont update. itunes and ipod touch update no problem, my GF has exact same phone and hers updated also...any advice?

My iphone 3gs wont update. itunes and ipod touch update no problem, my GF has exact same phone and hers updated also...any advice?

If I was in your shoes, I would choose to restore the iPhone with iTunes and then choose to NOT restore a previous backup.  I'd then go on to set up the phone as though it were totally new, and choose the stuff to load onto it.
The reason I'd go through that trouble.. even though it meant losing a lot of settings and having to set stuff up again .. is because I wasn't sure I could trust the backup that it's restoring from.
If you have trouble again after doing the fresh reload -- especially if it's soon after you do it -- you may have a hardware issue with the phone, such as faulty flash memory or a processor chip that's failing. If that's the case, you'll want to consider your repair/replacement options at that point.

  • Iphone 3gs wont allow me to enter password

My iphone 3gs wont allow me to enter my password.  the graphics on the phone seem to show the basic framework - ie boxes around the numbers etc.

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

my new iphone 5 wont let me download music of apps i have to answer 2 security questions its been so long since i have used these i dont remember the answers how can i get past this to download?

In order to get those to work you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard, preferably the full 10.6.8 combo updater.
