IPhone 4 16gb Capacity

Hi,
Should my iPhone 4 16gb be showing me that I have a capacity of 16gb? I would have thought that it should, but except that the availability will be less due to OS requirements.
It is showing that I only have a 14gb Capacity.
Thanks
Lou

The answer has to do with your electronic devices and their operating systems using a different definition of "gigabyte" ("GB") than that of the manufacturer's of storage devices such as memory cards and hard drives. When manufacturers of such devices say "GB", they mean what is called a "decimal gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,000,000,000 (one billion) bytes (a byte is a fairly basic unit of storage in computers). When your device's operating system describes the capacity of the storage medium, they typically use what is called a "binary gigabyte", which equals exactly 1,073,741,824 bytes. Because of this discrepancy, a device has less binary gigabytes than decimal gigabytes. It turns out that a decimal gigabyte is approximately 93% the size of a binary gigabyte, so if your iphone is 16 decimal gigabytes, your operating system will report that it is approximately: 16 decimal gigabytes * 93% = 16 * 0.93 = 14.8 binary gigabytes.

Hello guys
i wanted to know if there's anyone facing the same problem im facing i just bought new 16GB iphone from Apple when i went home i was trying to go to see the details on General \ About to see the phone capacity is just 14.8GB can anyone tell me is that how it should be or i have something wrong and can you tell me why is showing 14.8GB rather the 16GB
THanks

If you notice when you have a fresh computer, or a new hard drive, let's say for example an 80GB HD, you check the drive propertys to see the total space available, used etc. Usually you'll notice it states the total drive size is around 74.6 or so (give or take a meg or two)
The reason for this is this: 16GB, or 80GB is an estimation. When they say 16GB, theyre saying "Around 16GB, because its 16,000,000,000 bytes" What most people dont realize is that a GB is actually 1024 Megabytes, but youll often see it "rounded" to 1000. This rounded down throughout the scales (byte>kilo>mega>giga) adds up to a miscommunication to the consumer that you are getting more than what is physically there. In reality, if you keep knocking off that extra 24MB every GB, that adds up and you end up seeing that 14.8 instead of 16.

• Photo Stream putting iPhone to capacity

I am running 7.0.4 on my iPhone. I know there is an update, but haven't updated yet to most recent update yet.
I have Aperture 3.5.1. On Mavericks.
I have set Photo Stream on for all my devices (iPad, iPhone, Aperture). I also said auto upload from Aperture to iCloud/Photo Stream.
I run into a problem every now and then. I take LOTS of pictures at specific events of my kids. I have LARGE files for each picture as I have a high MP camera. So, end of May, I had Field Day... hundreds of pictures. I had end-of-year school picnics... hundreds of pictures... You see the pattern. My Photo Stream has hit 1000 pics...
My camera has a 16GB capacity and is no longer collecting email because it is so full. I like having all my pics show up on my devices (even the ones from my camera that I had to upload to Aperture.). However, I'd be fine if it only showed up on my iPad. But, I'd still want my iPhone to upload to Photo Stream (backup measure and reduces number of times I have to hardwire to my iMac). Assume there isn't a way for iPhone to opt to only upload but not download from Photo Stream (maybe even at selective times when I have a bloated 30 days of photos)?
Otherwise, is there a way for me to select some photos I don't care about being on Photo Stream and therefore not being delivered to all my devices? Will the devices auto update (remove those photos from photo stream on those devices) based on that or do I need to refresh somehow? Does that delete the picture from my library in Aperture or just from Photo Stream? Will it repopulate it anyways since it will be in the past 30 days? Another thing I couldn't find was an adjustment of how many days remain in Photo Stream (maybe I could reduce it to 15 days)?
If none of the above works, what happens if I turn Photo Stream off on my iPhone? Do I lose any pics? Will it automatically remove the Photo Stream pics?
SORRY... IT WON'T LET ME MOVE THIS TO IPHONE FORUM... IT SAYS I AM NOT AUTHORIZED...

When you enable the Photo Stream on your iPad and iPhone to be able to stream the photos to all devices, you cannot prevent the iPhone from downloading and showing all photos in the Photo Stream.
To keep this from filling the iPhone memory completely, be frugal with the amount of photos you are adding to the Photo Stream. If your iPad has plenty of space, download and save the photos from the Photo Stream to the iPad Camera Roll and on your Mac to an event (for example, by setting the Mac to auto import from the Photo Stream). Then delete the photos from the Photo Stream, either on your Mac or the iPad. This will remove them from iCloud and from the Photo Stream on all devices. Since you saved them to the Camera Roll on your iPad, you will still have them on the iPad, but not on the iPhone.

• IS an iphone 16gb or 32gb better

Is an iphone 16gb or 32gb better?

Other than twice the storage capacity, the phones are identical. Whether one is better than the other, only you can decide.

• Manually added tracks put my iPhone over capacity. Now I can't sync. Help!

I have a number of Audiobook I tried to sync to my phone. I could not find anywhere in the iPhone settings to choose to sync these (anyone know where?). So I manually added them by dragging them from iTunes onto the iPhone.
However they are very large files and put my iPhone "over capacity". Now whenever I try to sync I get an error message saying:
"The iPhone “Mr Shiney” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items (additional 7.38 GB required)."
But I can't unselect these files! They don't appear in the "Manually Added Songs" section of the Music tab. My phone is stuck in this weird state where I can no longer sync.
I have tried deleting the songs from iTunes. But this now just says the songs couldn't be found so I still can't sync.
Should I restore from backup? Won't I lose all my app content? Any ideas what to do?
My iPhone is a 3G on iOS 4.2.1. iTunes is 10.5.

Have you touched the "More" button (on the iPhone).
then gone to Audio Books.
Are they there?
I had an audio book still on my iphone, it survivedf the iOS5 update.
To get rid of it, I plugged iPhone into Mac,
Go to itunes.
Click on Iphone in iTunes.
Go to Books tab,
Scroll down, there is audio books.
Choose sync selected audio books,
And untick the ones I don;t want.
Dows this work for you?

• HT4623 iphone 16gb 3g is softwear 4.2.1 not support ios 5 or 6

i have iphone 16GB 3G software 4.2.1 but bot support ios 5 or ios 6

Due to your device's internal CPU and RAM, it will always be limited to running apps that use iOS 4.2.1 or earlier. Be sure to keep backups of any vintage apps you use. Once a developer updates their app past your maximum iOS, a compatible version can never be downloaded again.

• What is the iPhone "Other" capacity seen in iTunes?

What is the iPhone “Other” capacity seen in iTunes?

Other includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc. It should generally be about 1GB. If it's significantly larger than this it contains something corrupt; restoring the phone should resolve this.

• Hey hi i want to buy apple iphone 16gb At&t But i want use in india how to Buy Please help me

hey hi i want to buy apple iphone 16gb At&t But i want use in india how to Buy Please help me

AT&T "low cost" options are for ATT subsidized phones. Those require a two year contract commitment and are only available in the USA and those phones are locked to ATT. You can get them unlocked only once you meet the contract commitments. Such a phone would not be available for sale to you (as the contract requires USA payment and billing) and would be useless to you in India.

• If I deactivation the at&t service on my original iPhone 16GB

If I cut off the at&t service on my original iPhone 16GB, will my iPhone become iPod Touch? Have anyone done this before?

Yes - I have with my first generation iPhone.
In order to install a firmware update or restore the iPhone with iTunes if wanted or needed after no longer activated, you must leave the no longer activated SIM card inserted in the iPhone - the SIM card that was used with the iPhone when it was activated.

• IPhone 16GB stucks and does not unlock...

I have got an iPhone 16GB for four months now. At the first time the phone worked fine but suddenly after 2 months of use this problem started to appear. My iPhone's slider stucks (does not move) when you want to unlock it regardless if you push the home button or the power button on top. When you push each of them the screen turns on but the slider does not move to unlock the phone.Even worse the same happens when someone calls in, so you cannot answer any call!Afterwards, when I try to unlock it 2-3 times, unlocks but its late then and I have to call back the person who called me. I have upgraded to the latest 2.0.1 firmware edition using iTunes upgrade option but the same thing happens and the phone now seems to work slower than before and also, when you scroll the screen (eg. in Contacts) does not scroll smoothly. In all other respects the phone works flawlessly but this problem makes it almost unuseable and its very irritating. I am forced at the moment to use it with its included cable hands-free to accept calls. Is there any solution to this problem or I have to bring it to Apple service in case is faulty?

Probably that is what I will do. However, how can you explain that the screen works normally when you unlock the phone and gets stucked when it is locked? Moreover, do you know if there is any way to downgrade the firmware to 1.1.4?this may help solve the problem

• Iphone 3gs 16gb capacity

got the new iphone 3gs.
supposed to be 16gb. with the software in it i thought it would be taken down to about 15.5 but its showin as 14.3
is this the right capacity?
is there anyway the data from the older phone could have changed it in any way?

Yes, it's correct. Dave's linked article refers to hard drives as reported by the OS - even under 10.6 on a Mac, iTunes reports iPod/iPhone capacity using binary math, meaning 16 GB = ~14.8 GB of unformatted capacity, then formatting takes a bit more.

• Iphone 4 capacity

my iphone 4 on/off switch does not work. I want to sell it as spares, but cannot remember what capacity it is. Any ideas as to how I can find this out?

Settings General About. if its still in warranty you can get a new device for free because the button doesnt work and its covered in the apple One Year Hardware Warranty.

• IPhone storage capacity - large "Other" category

Had 8GB of space taken up by 'Other' (the bar at the bottom of iTunes) and just did a full 'new phone' restore followed by a backup restore from iCloud. I also turned off PhotoStream. Other is now down to 900MB, which feels reasonable (I have quite a few documents on the phone, including iMovie and Garageband projects).
But how did it balloon to 8GB? That's about a third of the total capacity of my 32GB iPhone 5. My photostream should have been big, but not that big.
As near as I can tell it was some sort of temp file/buffer allotment, previously deleted projects and videos and photos were kind of caught in limbo. Apple needs to fix storage management for iOS, where it keeps space available if it's occupied by old, unwanted data.
Has anyone found a way of clearing Other and optimizing storage besides through restores and using third party file exploration utilities?
TL;DR - greatly reduced the size of 'Other' by doing a full restore then restoring from a backup.
I'll do an experiment and turn PhotoStream back on now, and see what happens in the next while.

"Other" is often inflated by corrupted files, perhaps there as a result of some faulty app.
The general way to clear "Other" (down to approx. 1GB) is to do a restore just as you have done.
