I’m interested in purchasing an American iPhone 4 16GB Black “Unlocked” for International usage. I spend 85% of my time traveling in Northern Africa, Europe, and Middle-East, and on an occasion Asia. I need a phone that can meet my demanding travel needs, schedule, in-and-out of a variety of time zones and service providers. Question: Is the iphone 4 16GB “Unlocked” that communication device I can rely on to meet my demanding needs? If so, I’ll be in the Washington DC area on Friday, November 5 2010, through Sunday, November 7, 2010, and would like to know the availability, and where I could purchase an iPhone 4 16GB “Unlocked.”

All iphone purchased in U.S are carrier locked to AT&T regardless if it's under a contract or a no-contract. there is no official way to unlock them as Apple nor AT&T unlocks them.
If you really need a factory unlocked iphone, then you probably need to check out the Canadian Apple online store which you need an active billing and shipping address in Canada. If your billing and shipping is not in Canada, they won't ship it out. Same goes for UK. you can purchase one on the online store in UK. and the same rule applies.

If you're talking about buying the phone in the US, forget it. There are NO unlocked iPhones sold in the US and no US iPhone can be officially unlocked. Thus, it doesn't really matter what it costs.

Iphone 3GS 16GB Unlocked stuck on activation

I have a 3GS 16GB Iphone and all has been working fine up to the point of updating the software when it now will not activate and the sim card will not work.
The phone is unlocked and has never been jailbroken etc
Have tried to restore and reboot but it just says could not do it at this time as the activation server is temporarily unavailble
Have tried both with itunes and via wifi but both say the same thing
Have tried a number of different sim cards but still the same but like i said its factory unlocked

I've already posted the causes, but in case you missed them in the first post:
Possible causes:
1. Your antivirus is blocking access to gs.apple.com.
2. Your phone is jailbroken.
3. Your computer has been used at some time in the past to jaibreak some iOS device (not necessarily the phone with the problem), and its network database was corrupted by the hacking software that was used.
4. Apple's activation servers are down (very rare, and never for more than an hour or so).
For 1. try disabling your antivirus.
For 2. & 3. you need to go somewhere other than an apple forum for help. Although you can try deleting lines containing gs.apple.com from your "hosts" file on your computer.

I had the same problem. Kept getting message of waiting for activation or check network connections. I also tried every solution out there and nothing worked. This did though: I download the newest version of itunes (through Internet Explorer - Google Chrome wouldn't work). It pulled in my entire library thank goodness and then I plugged my iphone 4s into the computer. I let itunes find it, did a complete backup in icloud, then did a restore. Entire process took a couple of hours, but I now have imessage and facetime back. I was about ready to give up on Apple and go get a different phone ~

The phone could have been replaced under warranty & never activated for service with Verizon. If that's the case, you'll first have to establish service, with Verizon, then request the sim slot be unlocked. Verizon is correct in that they cannot request a phone be added to the officially unlocked database unless the phone was "assigned" to their network. I suspect this is your issue.

I bought a factory unlocked apple iPhone 4s 16gb white on eBay , it turns on let's me select language and country then goes to wifi or connect thru iTunes , but thru iTunes it says can't activate and neither thru wifi. Says can't activate try again and also a message : please insert SIM card with no pin lock to activate. I didn't have a sim when I received it and seller is very unhelpful! What do I do ? Apple does not use the term "factory unlocked" at all.
You can not activate it without a SIM at all. You will NOT be able to use that phone on any CDMA carrier, including Sprint and Boost Mobile. If you want to use a CDMA carrier, you must purchase a phone made for their network.
If you want to use that phone (assuming it's legitimately unlocked) you will have to use a GSM carrier like AT&T or T-Mobile.

Showing that the sim has no signal does not mean that your phone is locked. If you phone was locked, then it would come up with an invalid sim message instead.
If you have no signal, then try taking the sim card out of your phone and re-inserting it and then re-starting the phone and see if this works, but in the end you need to contract your phone company/carrier with regard to no signal. What company sim card are you using? You need to contact them as they provide the service and it is only them that can sort out why you are not receiving a signal with their sim card in your phone.

You will have to talk to the carrier who locked the devie orginally; ain't nothing in this world for free...devices are locked due to contracts. They sell you devices for a portion fo the retail price and need the contract to make their money back.

As Chris says. while the phone will work in India some features such as LTE connectivity may not work.
As to the differences, there is only one unlocked iPhone for sale form the Apple store. The T-Mobile version.
It is contract free and unlocked. But only if you buy it from Apple. If you buy it from a T-Mobile store it will be locked.
Also I'll repeat what Chris said: The warranty will only be valid in the US. so if you have any issues with the phone you won't be able to get it fixed or exchanged anywhere but the US.

If it's been less than 14 days, return it and buy a 64GB. If you bought it from somewhere other than Apple, the return window may be different. If not, you cannot exchange it. Sell it and buy a 64GB.
