IPhone 4 32GB Stores 20%+ Less Audio Than 3GS 32GB?

It is an undisputed fact that I can store a LOT more audio on my 3.2GB 3GS (on O/S 3.1.3) than I can on my new iPhone 4 32GB. I mean a LOT less - like 20%.
I loaded the EXACT same settings, apps and songs into the iPhone 4 using a 3GS backup. Absolutely no difference. When I tried to syncronize the first time, it loaded the settings fine until it started to copy the songs over. I got an error message saying there was not enough room. I was going to be 3GB short! Yes, I lost 3GB of available audio storage on my iPhone 4 32GB vs 3GS 32GB.
I cancelled this operation and looked at the total "available" capacity of each device. The iPhone 4 was at 29.1GB and the 3GS was at 29.3 - the iPhone 4 obviously reserves slightly more for OS 4, but not significant enough to account for the 3GB less music storage.
I thought the error message might be a fluke, so I loaded my audio in little chunks until I reached capacity, and sure enough, I could load about 20% less songs than in my 3GS.
So what's up here? It makes no sense to me. One thing to note is that I'm using the on-the-fly 128 kbps conversion option (checkbox on the "summary" page when syncing). Since I copied over most songs on my 3GS when I was using iTunes 9.1 and OS 3.1.3, it could be that iTunes 9.2 (maybe in combination with OS 4) has a less efficient conversion routine when converting a 256 kpbs song to 128 kpbs. Or maybe OS 4 is reserving more space per song for some reason.
This probably (and hopefully) has nothing to do with the iPhone 4 hardware itself, I would guess, There's something going on with the conversion of audio that's less efficient in iTunes 9.2 or in O/S 4. On my iPhone 4, my summary page says I have 25.17GB of audio loaded - this represents 4,638 songs loaded. On my 3GS, it takes 23.56GB to store 5,333 songs.
Note that the 4,638 songs loaded on my iPhone 4 are a SUBSET of the 5,333 songs on my 3GS, meaning that all 4,638 songs are included in the 5,333 songs that I loaded in my 3GS (same songs), and yet my 3GS takes 1.61GB LESS to store 695 MORE songs. This is just the data for the audio itself and nothing else. So it's not extra space taken up by the OS or anything else.
If I use the average space taken up by my audio on my iPhone 4 and extrapolate, it would take about 28.94GB of audio space for 5,333, which would be 5.38GB MORE than the 3GS (that's 22.8% more). Of course, this is not 100% accurate because the song length may be different, but it's along those lines. Remember - same songs here using the same 128 kbps conversion feature.
Has anyone else experienced this? This is a MAJOR deal for me since I already was VERY disappointed that their was no 64GB phone, and now it's even WORSE because I have to unload ANOTHER 20% on my music!! This can't be a problem that's unique to ME in any way. Still confused as to what's going on here?

Maybe the artwork is coming through in a higher resolution?
Nope - I'm just talking about the AUDIO files. I'm looking directly at how much "audio" (only) GB capacity is listed on the "summary" tab in iTunes when each device is plugged takes to store THE EXACT SAME SONGS. Re-read the first post.
I've re-checked all the audio setting for both phones and they are exactly the same. This probably has something to do with allocating more space per file when doing 128bit on the fly conversions using iTunes 9.2 (vs iTunes 9.1) and / or under OS 4 (vs OS 3.1.3).

  • Just bought new replacement iphone from apple store and less than two hours later, the screen went blurry and I can barely see anything. Phone still functions fine though.

Just bought a new replacement phone at the apple store and as soon as I got home, vertical lines came up through the screen and now it's extremely blurry. All the functions of the phone still work fine and I really can't see anything except a small part of the screen at the top. I called the apple store and he told me to put the phone in recovery mode on my computer and the restore and update it. I did this and I can tell the phone has restored yet it is still extremely blurry and I can't see anything to type it in. Is there anything I could do with this? The apple store is over an hour away and saving another trip down there would be great. Thanks

    Bad luck. Take ti back.

    Standard practices:
Restart the device (power off completely, then back on) - retest.
Reset (hold sleep wake and home buttons until apple logo appears) - you can try this, but it is most useful when your device is frozen.
Restore to factory settings - retest.
Make an appointment at an Apple retail store genius bar if the above did not resolve the issue.

The text "Time remaining ... hours" flickers.
I set it to start restoring from the 3GS backup yesterday at 1pm and the time remaining kept on increasing. I left it overnight and at 9am this morning the progress bar hadnt moved and it said 12 hours remaining.
I don't know why its taking so long. I unplugged it and it just set up as new phone. So i did a factory reset and tried again at 4pm and it is now 12am and it says 4 hours remaining and my computer occasionally flickers. (Its not a bad computer, 2 months old, i7, 6GB RAM, Heaps of HDD space). It also messes with google chrome and i cannot browse the web at all while it is trying to restore my iphone.
I have tried restarting my laptop and should i reinstall itunes? I simply dont see why it should take longer than 20 hours to copy over 20GB of data!
    Can anyone help me?

That's strange, because no where in the iPhone's limited warranty does it state "365 days", but it does state 1 year. I think the only way they could get out of that is because of the battery, which is not covered by the warranty. HOWEVER, it is stated on AT&T's website that claims are handled from 31-365 days, which would explain why the Apple people acted as such. I know you have Verizon, but since it is (essentially) the same device, it's under the same warranty.

Many people have had stories about issues happening as soon as their warranty expires, with products in general.
I'd just consider upgrading, and selling your old one.

As Track607 stated, you guys have no idea the difference in terms.
Memory is RAM, and is NOT the same as STORAGE. And no, it's not "the same difference", it's completely different.
Also, to add, the iPhone does not have the capability to use virtual memory, thus, the iPhone could have 64 gigs of storage, and it wouldn't run faster. Your friend does not know about computers. Don't ever let him help you pick out a computer.

  • IPhone4 stores only less than 3GB of photos/videos

    Hello All,
I have a 16GB iphone4, I now realised that it stores only less than 3 GB worth photos/videos (HD) and then says that there is no more space left.
When I check through iTunes it says 12.3 GB of photos, 1.17 GB apps and 0.06 GB Others, and nothing free...
But when I copy this to my machine the folder size is less than 3 GB -:(
Should it not be able to store much more ?
    Once I had 120 photos + videos
and another time 75 photos + videos...
I know the length of the videos matter, but again the storage in size should be much more than 3 GB, right ?
    Any information is appreciated !!
    Thanks in Advance !!
    Best

PS - I am at the moment upgrading the OS to see if that helps

please ignore this question, Iguess I had created another library in the phone which I had forgotten about.

  • If I buy Iphone from Apple Store, can I transfer to Virgin Mobile?

If I buy any Iphone from Apple Store, can I transfer it to Virgin Mobile? Because Virgin Mobile for Iphone is expensive than regular price. So I favor to buy it from Apple Store. Can anything I get it to Virgin Mobile??

    Hi Court,
When you buy a phone from the Apple Store, they are going to automatically attach it to a carrier.  I'm not sure if you're with one right now but either way this is the case.  The price you're paying for the phone is relative and I'll give you detail as to what that means.
Virgin Mobile: No contracts and month to month
    iPhone Cost (32GB: $649)
    Verizon: 2yr Contract
    iPhone Cost (32GB: $299)
    Monthly Bill: $100 (All in)
Now understand the math here.  Over 2 years with Verizon, you'll be paying ($100 * 24months) + $299 = $2,700.  So you're locked in for 2 years.  You'll have to pay a termination fee if you want to leave early which I'm sure will equal so some of the amount balance of the phone for what Verizon bought it at.  You're paying less upfront but more over the long term.
With Virgin you might end up paying $649 up front but since there are no contracts, you can leave anytime.
    Regards,
    JC

  • Songs purchased on iPhone through iTunes Store will not show up on iPhone after syncing with iTunes

I recently purchased iTunes Match (about a month ago).  Since purchasing Match, any songs that I have bought on my iPhone 4S (32GB, Sprint) through the iTunes Store app will not sync back to my iPhone after syncing with iTunes on my computer.  I have iOS 7.1.2 and iTunes 11.3.0.54.  The only way I can get them to show back up in my iPhone music library so I can play them is by re-downloading the songs through the iTunes Store app.  Which is super annoying because now it is about 10 songs that keep doing this, and they are in multiple playlists.  Is anyone else having this problem and have you found any fixes?  Really regretting purchasing the iTunes Match (which is not enabled on my iPhone, just on my computer).

How to create custom ringtones ...
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.
    3. Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use. The chorus may be a good place to start.
    4. Write down the start and stop times of the clip.
    5. Right-click the song and select "Get Info."
    6. Click the "Options" tab.
    7. Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Start Time" in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 2:01) format.
    8. Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Stop Time." Make sure the ringtone is no more than 30 seconds long.
    9. Click "OK."
    10. Right-click your song again and select "Convert Selection to AAC." Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.
    11. Right-click the ringtone and select "Delete."
    12. Click on the "Keep Files" button.
    13. Find the file. It's usually in your User folder under "Music > iTunes > iTunes Music" and under the band's name. It will have an extension of m4a.
    14. Replace the m4a extension of your ringtone with m4r. You can either double-click slowly to rename your file, or right-click and select "Get Info" on a Mac or "Rename" on a Windows PC.
    15. Click "Use .m4r" or the PC equivalent when the system warns you that the change may affect the use of your file.
    16. Double-click the ringtone file. ITunes will automatically add it to your ringtones folder in your iTunes Music Library.
    17. Connect your iPhone and sync your ringtones.
Oh, also to change a file extension. (not sure on Mac), but in Windows you need to go to "control panel" select "folder options". You need to uncheck the box "hide file extension for known file types". This will allow you to view and change the files extensions.
    Hope this is useful ...

  • Is it good to buy an iPhone 4 32Gb right now ? (December 2013)

    Hello guys.
I'd like to ask you if I do a good thing to buy an iPhone 4 32Gb right now. Other models are too expensive, and the 4 still looks a good device.
    What do you think?

    I wouldn't buy anything less than a 4S.  The cost difference between a 4 and 4S can't be much.

  • Ringtones Play At Lesser Quality Than Text Tones

    Strange thing I am noticing.
Ringtones on my iPhone 4S (iOS 5) play back at what sounds like a lesser quality than Text Tones.
When selecting a "ringtone", all the tones that play back sound like a low quality audio file.
When selecting a "text tone", the very same audio files play back in full quality.
    Just sayin.

Thought I'd be a pest and bump this (I also replied to a related thread).
I previously was too lazy to make my own ringtones, so when I finally got around to it last week, I noticed this inexplicable and annoying bug.  Why on EARTH would ringtones play at such horrid quality?  If Apple made its own Blu-ray player, would it play movies at VHS quality??
I'll be VERY HAPPY when this is fixed.  Then my phone won't sound like an audio Hallmark greeting card when it rings.
