IPhone 4 almost out of memory but how to clean up

The iPhone 4 say i have 8,2GB programs/apps but I have 11 programs 124MB programs what can I do to get 8,1 GB back????

But I also updated my iPhone to ver.5 now it show 8,6GB free space.....
Before 0,48GB free space
I think the restore and the upgrade fixed the problem....

you can see it is called other, how can I find out what it is?
I first thought it was dropbox,as I downloaded a lot of files to dropbox, but I have desynced all my folders and I still get the same amount of space.
The helpdesk of dropbox tells me that my mac cannot contain contents anymore if I have desynced the folders...
I want to free my mac from this yellow stuff from which I do not know what it is. Has anybody an idea how I can figure this out?

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.

You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

How to detect "almost out of memory" in JRockit?

I would appreciate any advice on how to build an "almost out of memory" detector to ensure the JVM does not crash when the user mis-configures our application.
So far I have encountered these problems with JRockit 27.3 (JDK 5.0) in limited testing on windows. This test is just one part of the app, using only 50mb. I've tried 27.4 and it appears to have the same issues.
1) Runtime.freeMemory returns 0 often, even when lots of memory is still available (28% was returned in the previous call!). If the thread sleeps for 30 millisec a resonable value might be returned. (but still gets 0 fairly often).
2) There is huge oscillation in the free memory reported even when there is > 15% memory left. The test program allocates some intermediate data (10kb or so), then the more permanent data (500 bytes or so). Successive calls to free memory in the loop can oscillate from 8% left to 17% left.
3) As memory gets more than 50% used, the GC algorithm switches around several times. I was using -Xgcprio:pausetime with pause time of 600ms. The observation was the GC algorithm switches and some full GC's would take as much as 8 seconds (this test using 100mb of memory) and during this time my polling thread (250ms) does not run. This is a problem since there are a couple of polling threads that expect to run at least once per second.
4) It appears the basic Java heap usage is quite different with JRockit. The test code can allocate 50k result objects (about 500 bytes each) when run in Sun JVM, but only 33k objects in JRockit. (-Xmx is set to 50M for these tests, the real app runs with 3 to 12GB based on customer hardware)

1. I don't have that fat format I checked as I saw this on another answer...BUT...you are right the project was very bloated and I made a new project with the sequence and moved a bunch of projects off to an outside drive and things are flying again...this effect "twirl" was on three clips and this seemed to be creating a problem along with it being a bloated project. Don't know why this effect renders easily then the next second doesn't it's on three clips on the entire project and one or another might not render all of a sudden.
2. I understand what you said about the timeline export...I decided to export the sequence without the matte it was nested in and that sequence did have the chapter markers on the timeline and they again didn't export??? I'll look tomorrow at this it makes no sense if what you're saying is how to do it...the final cut pro book said they should have showed up if I export from the browser and that didn't work either.
3. I then matted that output and rendered it to output but I am worried this will degrade and compress the sequence more than I want by outputting the same sequence with current settings twice???...the couple of outputs I could make nested looked very good as this was one render...however, I tried doing a quicktime "current settings" with the dvd studio pro info still trying to export chapter markers and maybe it's my imagination but the output didn't look as sharp as just an output with just chapter markers???
r. I did look at the final cut pro book and it says that mpeg 2 movies will not read chapter markers anyway if you create one in compressor...if this is true it makes no difference if the quicktime output isn't having chapter markers show up. I assume when I go to author though I can put an mpeg 2 movie into dvd studio pro and create chapter markers at that point!! It seems weird it says it can do it with an mpeg 1 but not an mpeg 2 when everyone is using that for dvds.

IPhone ran out of memory when recording video...can it be saved?

I was recording a video of my friend getting engaged and my iPhone 4S ran out of memory and stopped recording. Afterwards the video couldn't be played on my iPhone and I am encountering the same problem when trying to play the file on my laptop.
I've tried a few different MOV and MP4 fix websites, but nothing seems to work. The file size is 377MB so I know something is there, it just can't play.
Is there some sort of code that's written into the video file at the end that didn't happen because my iPhone ran out of memory?
Any help to save this very important memory would be appreciated.

Now this is very strange. I uploaded the video file to my Dropbox and now it's playing through the app.
I also sent a link and it's playing via that as well.
But I DL the file from Dropbox and try to play it, no dice.

We had this problem after upgrading to iOS 8.       The iPhone 5 would not backup either to the cloud or to the computer.   Backup always ended with an error message.
Long story short, with the help of iFunBox ( which I used to make manual backups of some important iPhone data files ), I discovered two games that
would crash iFunBox.      They were not important games for us, so I didn't try to isolate the offending data files.     And I deleted the two games from the iPhone.
Apparently these two games conflicted with iOS 8 just as they did with iFunBox.      The next backup without those games was then successful.
I backed up to both the Mac and the cloud.

I see that v28.0 takes 200MB.
How much more is this than what is already loaded for my v24.0?
Will it just add the extra pieces, or will it require a free block of 200MB (which my computer does not have)?

You should updated to Firefox 28, Firefox updates don't take any new space they just replace the existing files.
There are some things you can do to clean up your hard drive to free up space however, http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=21178060 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956324, also uninstall programs you don't use anymore and delete files you don't need anymore.
You should also start saving up for a new machine, Windows XP is being dropped from support by Microsoft in a few days, which means it will no longer be safe to use on the internet.

Just open the "Photos" app, open the "Camera Roll" folder and start deleting the pictures you do not want to keep. For mails just open the Mail app and do the same, click edit, choose your emails you do not want to keep and delete them.

Okay, my gateway laptop crashed about 2 months ago and Im saving up for a new Mac. I want to use my iPhone 4 on the Mac, but how do I do that with out wiping my phoen clean or without my old laptop too. And I am not tech savvy so I need step by step.

So basically I'm a girl who can't figure out technology. I want my music and apps to stay and I want to be able to update my phone because it still has it's original software.

Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
After this, do an update from the App Store.
Thats all there is to it.
For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

MacBook almost out of memory

When I check my MacBook's memory, I have 45BG of memory used by "Other" how can I figure out what all of that is and get rid of the junk... I've deleted cache and documents I don't need, but I really don't have that much "stuff".
