IPhone 4 and Tiger 10.4

Hi all,
Just got an iPhone4 but I'm runnig Tiger 10.4.11 on a MacBook. It tell me it's not compatible, what the **** do I do? The upgrde to 10.5 is £132 on top of the phone cost.
I thought Apple was "future proof" and I can;t make this work without spending a lot of money and I just want to use the **** Phone....
Anyone out there that can help??
Cheers!

Hi ScottofDoom - Same problem here - Its a major draw back here's my story...
I'm based in the UK. I bought an iPhone 4 yesterday from an O2 store.
Firstly I synced my existing iPhone 3G to make sure all is backed up ready to move to the iPhone 4.
Put the micro sim in, plugged the new iPhone 4 into my Black MacBook (Tiger OSX)
Says I need OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard) for iPhone 4 to work
On this Black MacBook I'm on Tiger, so I go to Apple store online to see how much.
Seems that the only option is £120 Box Set including iLife latest.
Luckily I have another (white) MacBook which I don't usually use for iTunes and my iPhone, which already has Leopard 10.6.3 on it, so I figure ill start using this for iTunes and the iPhone 4 from now on.. even though i liked having my older Black MacBook (Tiger) as a dedicated machine for non-work tasks.
My entire iTunes library is on an external Samsung Story hard drive, about 1.6tb of all my music, movies etc plus my latest backup from my old iPhone 3G.
Open up iTunes on the White MacBook (Leopard) and sign in with my iTunes account info, download latest iTunes update to be sure all is good.
Close iTunes
Re-Open up iTunes whilst holding down option key and point it to the existing iTunes music folder on my Samsung external hard drive
Here's where the problems start:
Only a handful of my music and none of my bought from the iTunes store music appears in the library
And all that does appear in the library has that scary grey exclamation mark meaning it doesn't know where things are.
Phone the Apple Store and wait 5 mins to speak to tech support.
The man on the phone tells me I have to import my entire iTunes library onto my internal hard drive on my white MacNook (Leopard) in order for it to work. .
But my iTunes folder is 1.5tb filled with loads of official bought stuff from the iTunes store and the only space on this MacBook is 3.61 gb! This now means that I need to somehow have a larger internal harddrive even though I have 1tb of space on an external drive.
Note. All the time during the call the man is sending me emails on how to solve the problem to try to get me off the phone and to go it alone. However none of these emails ever arrived, and its now 45mins since I was on the call to him with no sign of them.
At this point lets bare in mind, If i didn't have this other (white MacBook) computer with Leopard on it already I would have spent:
A. £120 more to get Snow Leopard Box Set on the Tiger machine (and thats if it met the minimum requirements)
B. On finding out that this computer has got nowhere near 1.5tb of space required to move the iTunes library on its internal drive, I'd go out and buy a 2tb drive
and still this would not enable the iPhone 4 to work according to Apple's tech people on the phone!!
So I'm totally stuck. It seems I need a 2TB internal drive in an old MacBook to use this new iPhone 4 - this can't be correct, surely? Please correct me and the Apple techician if I'm wrong.
I've booked an appointment at the Apple Store Genuis Bar in Regent Street next Thursday.
So for now im back to using iTunes and my iPhone 3G on my Tiger MacBook whilst the iPhone 4 goes back in it's box.
Until then, any help would most welcome.
One question that may answer it all and would be of interest:
Has anyone successfully got an iPhone 4 working when using an external hard drive for their iTunes media folder?

Can I back up my iPhone 4S to my ipad 3 (64 gb)? I do not have a computer running Mountain Lion. Our desktop still runs Tiger, so I purchased the 3rd generation iPad with 64 gb thinking it had had plenty of room to backup my iPhone photos. I used a camera connection kit and transferred about 1100 old photos from my camera roll on my iPhone to my ipad.  I then deleted pictures from my iPhone and now my camera roll has only 357 photos. However, in the Settings, under "About" it says I have 2147 photos. Why? I only have a total of 216 photos in all my albums. However, now I don't have enough space in iCloud to backup either device. Why not?  Any help, any advice, appreciated please! I spent a long time on the phone with Apple today and they couldn't solve the problem.

iCloud only give so much space for free storage, then if you exceed the limit of 5gb you have to pay for additional storage.

  • Curious... Syncing Issues Between iPhone and iTunes?

Just curious... the past several months I have noted various concerns around "syncing" between iPhone and iTunes... yet don't recall any mention of whether it occurs between MAC OS or WIN hardware (desktops and or laptops). Furthermore, I am interested if anyone can comment whether these sync issues occurs mostly on TIGER or LEOPARD OS when accessing iTUNES. (Guess I should pay more attention to the noted OS field.
I ask because I am considering an upgrade to LEOPARD by end of month and don't want to jeopardize my syncing to my iPhone if it is a LEOPARD related issue. Thank you

I'm running Leopard and I've never experienced any sync issues.
These discussions include mostly problems, which is what these discussions are for - a user to user support forum for technical support issues and questions.
Which particular issue are you referring to?
Before installing a major OS X upgrade such as Leopard over a previous OS X version, it is a good idea to create or update your existing backup of important data stored on your computer's hard drive - including your iTunes library, photos, contact info, calendar events, documents, etc. I've never experienced any problems installing a major OS X upgrade over a previous OS X version, but I always update my computer's backup immediately beforehand to be on the safe side.

I have a desktop mac operating on Mac OSx 10.4.11 and the system does not recognize my iphone and I am unable to upgrade to the newest itunes version. What do I need to do?

    Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
    Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
    During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.
    OS numbers and names
    OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
    OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
    OS X 10.7.x - Lion
    OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

The Apple History site has specifications for every Mac ever produced: http://www.apple-history.com/
    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
    Upgrade beyond Snow Leopard
Information about upgrading Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A
    Important
Check that your Mac complies with any requirements. If you are not in the US you should use the Change Country link at the bottom of Apple pages.

Never mind it won't stay working

  • Wifi with iphone and touch- safari problems- internet sharing solved.

This has probably been mentioned before but if you are one of the poor sods like me who spent hours trying to figure out why your iphone or ipod touch would connect to your wifi (via mac internet sharing) but safari would never find web pages then here is the solution.....
    buy leopard.
i spent countless hours reading forums, messing with settings on mac and iphone and the best it would ever work for would be about 5 seconds then stop, it drove me insane. for the life of me i had no idea why my iphone would not work properly with my mac mini.
'when you tried to share your internet connection via airport iphone would find it but safari wouldnt work'.
so, i bought leopard the other day (upgraded from tiger) and it worked perfect 1st time and still does, no issues at all.
i know this has probably been mentioned but i wanted to save some time and tears for those who have not yet found the solution, but unfortunatly its spending £85.
    cheers

Could be a GMail setting, but my GMail works just fine.  You might try removing your GMail account again and re-add it as an Exchange Account rather than using the standard GMail profile:
    http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740&topic=14252
This has the advantage of keeping your Google contacts and calenders in sync with your iPhone, but it may also get around whatever GMail problem you're having.

  • Moving from old iPhone and 10.4 OS Macbook to new iPhone 4G and 10.5 iMac

I have an original iPhone and have it synced to a 5 year old MacBook which is on 10.4.11. Not Snow Leopard. Now I have a new iPhone and have discovered that it requires at least a 10.5.
My proposal is to change computers to sync with so move old phone to the iMac. Then, sync iPhone 4 to that computer.
I'm trying to move all apps.
I have iTunes library in an external hard drive but have not been successful in using this to access all music in both computers. (MacBook has most purchased music on it, copied to external hard drive, attached to iMac and Media Library now pulls from External Hard Drive with limited success).
Before I do this, I just want to find out if this is the best route.
    Thanks!

    1. DO NOT use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant; and
There were some occasional problems transferring from PPC Macs to Intel Macs, if the new one was running Leopard or the first couple of releases of Snow Leopard. By all accounts, those were fixed long ago.
But there's always the possibility of a problem; you should be doing regular backups of your Mac anyway, but if you haven't, this is the time to start, "just in case." You can't use Time Machine on Tiger, but you will be able to on your new Mac. In the meantime, CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper can make "bootable clones" of your Mac. CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.
    2. Go ahead use them, they've worked for me
Setup Assistant is by far the easiest, simplest, most reliable way. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
. . . or if I choose the Setup/Migrate Assistants method - - won't any issues that my current Mac might have on it (if any) going to get transferred to the new iMac either way?
Depends on what the issues are. If they're OS-related, no, since you'll have a whole new OS. If you have broken or partially-deleted apps, yes, some of that sort of problem might be transferred. Fix such problems first, if at all possible; otherwise you'll have to fix them later.

  • Jabber for iPhone and iPad cannot receive calls

We currently have Call Manager 9.1.1 and Presence 9.1.1.
I am starting to use the Jabber Client for iPhone and iPad, but am having trouble receiving calls dialed to a particular extension.
If I can go settings for the iPhone Jabber client as an example, I am succesffuly connected to all accounts: IM, Phone Services, Voicemail, and WebEx.
When I go to the keypad, I can succesffuly dial internal extensions and make outbound calls to any numbers and they come accross as using my extension.
When calling the extension, my desk phone rings, but not the Jabber client.
Not sure what could be causing this issue to occur for Jabber not receiving the calls.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Paul Gaydos

Should still work. But would be good to check indial into jabber with the phone unplugged, just for testing purposes.
also, you have checked the partition and configuration on the TAB device is the same as on the deskphone?
Can you attach call manager traces when making a test call and attach to the case.  Let us know the extension and device names you have used in the test, and a timestamp of the test.
    thanks

  • How do we split our iCloud accounts but keep one iTunes account so we can share purchased content for our multiple iPhones and iPads?

How do we split our iCloud accounts but keep one iTunes account so we can share purchased content for our multiple iPhones and iPads?

You can migrate a copy of the data to a new account, then delete the other person's data from each account.  To do this, on the phone that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that you want to keep on the phone, save these to your camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll. If you have any synced notes that you want to keep on the phone, email these to yourself so you can create new notes in the new account.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPhone.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.  You will create a new icloud email address with you turn Mail to On.
Finally, to un-merge the data you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa).

There is only one solution. Each user must have their own separate user account. All of their respective data would be contained in their separate user accounts. This also means each will have a separate iTunes Library. If you all use the same third-party apps, then each will have to purchase their own copies under their own Apple IDs. Some data sharing is possible. See:
