IPhone 4- antenna issues past 9/30?

Good morning-
I would like to purchase the new iPhone 4 but am concerned about antenna issues since Apple has stopped giving out the free cases. Has Apple fixed the issues with the antenna, or will I have to purchase a case on my own, and hope there aren't any more problems? I currently have a 3G and haven't had too much of a problem with the antenna or reception.

http://www.apple.com/iphone/case-program/
We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. *Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.*

  • IPhone 5 antenna issue when placed on steel furniture?

I listen to podcasts on my iPhone through a Bluetooth earpiece while doing stuff in the kitchen. When I tried to do this with my new iPhone 5, the Bluetooth audio was really messed up, dropping like crazy.
After some experimentation I realized that this happened because I was placing the iPhone 5 on a large stainless steel shelf, with the aluminum back in full contact with the stainless steel surface. The issue goes away when I place the phone glass side down. I tried it again with a different steel shelf in my house, and got the same result.
I read somewhere that the aluminum back is part of the antenna in some way. So I'm guessing that this will happen to all iPhone 5s, rather than just mine. Has anybody tried this? Antennagate resurrected?

Try pinching the upper left part of your phone and it looses bluetooth signal as well...and I have too experienced your situation as well as the bluetooth one.

Enjoy. While everyone else is complaining and waiting for a 'real' fix, why not have fun with the issue?

    Love it.

  • Zagg invisible shield fix antenna issue?

Does the Zagg invisible shield actually fix the iPhone 4 antenna issue?

My issue is the same with or without any bumper or cover... I believe and have had it somewhat confirmed with at&t that they are having issues with the towers in my area.. and have since March.. If they are upgrading everything to 4G it makes sense to me that until it is all transitioned over and all the bugs are worked out it would give people a less then perfect signal. I have always had full 5 bars and never any complaints and have been with this company since 1993 and have seen them thru approximately 4 or 5 merges and never had anything bad to say until around March. I still was using my 3GS before the ios4 upgrade back then. So I am not convinced it is the new iphone4 antenna problem that everyone thinks it is... I have the same signal strength on my iphone 4 whether I have a cover on or not and if I hold it all different ways the signal does not change to any better or worse.. I am constantly at 1 or 2 bars.. 3 or 4 maybe once a week for a minute or two and get excited to see them. That is sad isn't it??? lol

  • My take on the iPhone antenna issue

I'll start off by saying I own a 3GS, don't own a 4, have seen one a friend has and know a few friends that have them.
I've had other products (like a knife) that have an optional guard. You can leave it off and "be careful" or you can put it on and have the item be somewhat less attractive. This is my personal take on Apple's reasoning.
You definitely would not want to increase the size of the iPhone by building in a case, because a third part might make a case that, say, was also a checkbook case. So it makes sense for the iPhone to be bare bones, and you have the option of adding a case if you want one.
The mistake, as I see it, was in Apple not including a bumper with the iPhone, +and having the bumper already be on the iPhone when you took it out of the box.+
Had they done this, IMO there would have been no complaints at all.

I agree the bumpers should have been free and included.
The antenna issue though is very subjective. Steve is right. I have seen every phone i have owned drop bar level depending on how i hold it. This one is more pronounced because we can touch the antenna, usually a radio no no. The idea of the external antenna integrated with the case is quite cool. I use my iP4 in a very fringe area and haven't had it drop a call due to lost signal. In fact it is better than my 3G i replaced. It is better with the bumper. So what happened? Apple took a risk and designed something new. Then Steve hyped it up into the stratosphere. Raised expectation of perfection. It isn't perfect and all the nay sayers had something quite real to pick on. Now here we are.
This phone is an amazing device. Very fast an powerful and the camera is really good. It has a few color issues but nothing that can't be fixed in any photo editor. The result is great photos capture with a cell phone. The video is great as is the recorded sound. Quite usable.
So it has a few quirks, well worth all the positives in my opinion.

  • Will Iphone 4 8gb have antenna issue sorted?

    Hi ,
I am hoping some one in this forum might get a inside information on the new Apple iphone 4 8gb which will be released on 14 oct with new ios  5  but no SIRI.
Now I had a bad experience with the Iphone 4 white which I bought in June 2011 and returned back after suffering a lot of call drop issue because of antenna on the phone.
I dont want to be in the same situation again where I buy the iphone 4 8gb and realize that the antenna issue still exists.
SO MY QUESTION TO APPLE IS:
IS THE ANTENNA GATE ISSUE SORTED OUT ON THE IPHONE 4 8GB ?
    Thank you

Yes, I am talking about the GSM model. Cause a friend of mine had bought this model iphone 8gb a year back when Iphone was launched. But it was soon stopped. So he has got the iphone 8gb model and even he had issues with the antenna on it.
Now I am just wondering if Apple has just launched the model back again without any changes to the antenna.
I want to just use the 8gb one if it doesnt have any issues, till the time iphone 5 gets launched.
I am waiting for the prices to be released tomorrow in UK. just to see what the contracts turn out to be.
Why to buy the new Iphone 4s if that looks exactly same as the Iphone 4. Features matter, but iphone 5 is
    what I wanted to buy.

  • "antenna issues iPhone 4"

Have the issues with iPhone 4 antenna been resolved?  I am a Verizon customer and can stand beside a Verizon customer with a Pantech HotShot with 4 bars and no issues with a conversation but yet my Verizone iPhone 4 has 1 bar and I have severe issues with a conversation.  I have done all of the "update roaming" issues and check for the latest updates.  Is there an answer for this issue?
Viable feedback would be greatly appreciated!

The reported issues with the antenna in the iPhone 4, which in general were overblown, were for the GSM version of the iPhone. I don't recall seeing a lot of posts about antenna problems with the Verizon model. If you're having reception problems that the usually reset/restore steps don't help, I'd suggest visiting an Apple Store or calling Apple support about the problem.
    Regards.

  • Looking for Q&A session from July 16th press conference on antenna issue.

Does anyone know where I can find the rest of video, the Q&A session, from the July 16th press conference on the iPhone 4's antenna issue? The post on apple.com cuts it off. Kind of irritating because I'm experiencing the same issue, and I'd like to see what questions were asked. All I can find are a few very small clips here and there on other websites and excerpts of the session with a lot of spin mixed in. I just want to watch it for myself. Anyone know where I can find it in its entirety?

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38263228/
In the video at the bottom, it clearly shows video from the Q&A session. So yes, the Q&A session was recorded.
So, does anyone with more accurate information know where this can be found unedited without all the spin.

  • Antenna Issue, bumpers free for everyone until recall or software solution

I have mine since yesterday, the antenna issue is unacceptable. I'm thinking about returning it but I changed telephone operator and it won't be simple to rollback the process.
I think, no I demand that, the bumpers should be free for everyone who bought an iPhone 4, until a patch or hardware solution is offered.
An official communication about the issue is also required before christmas.

  • IPhone 4 Bumper issue in Turkey

iPhone 4 had been puted on the market officially on the 24th of september. But none of the customers was able to get a "Bumper" neither free nor by paying. There is not even a single "bumper" on the market including the Apple Premium Resellers. Also we cannot buy "Apple Case Program" from iTunes. We could not even see that application. So how and when would we be able to achieve a "bumper" either it's free or not?

The temporary promotion from Apple for the free iPhone 4 bumper case program was only open to select countries. This was to appease early buyers due to reports of reception issues. There isn't any need for a case other than to protect your iPhone from damage. The so called "antenna issue" is a non-issue that has been blown way out of proportion due to users who either received a defective iPhone that should be swapped or don't understand how cellphones work on cellular networks. I have no issue with my iPhone 4 and my friends, family and colleagues have also confirmed they have no issues. Like any cellphone if you were to hold it outside and the signal bars dropped from 5 to none then your phone is defective and should be repaired or swapped. If you experience issues indoors with reception that isn't an issue with the iPhone and is an issue with the signal gain you're getting from your local carrier tower. I have used the iPhone 4 both with and with out a case and it performs the same. Outdoors I get 4-5 bars holding the iPhone and indoors 3 to 4 bars depending on where I am and how much physical obstruction is between me and the local tower. Anyone that lives in an already poor reception area should get a GSM signal booster for indoor use to improve their reception and not blame Apple for their reception which is due to living/working in heavily concrete buildings or using the iPhone in fringe areas of their carrier network.

  • IPhone 4G, anymore issues?

i am thinking of uprading 4 iPhone 3GS phones to the 4G. have the recent software updates solved or lessened the antennae issues? if anyone can provide any feedback so i dont make like a $1,200 mistake i would really appreciate it. thanks in advance....

    Silencer,
You are being a little quick to read into the gnome's reply what you want to hear.
What ever antenna problems the iPhone 4 had prior to iOS 4.1 it still has. Nothing has been changed in regards to antenna issues except the change they made to the algorithm they use to display signal bars.
So if you are in an area that had signal lose before the update you will still have signal problems. Also the need for a case or bumper has not changed and in my area a case/bumper is absolutely required.
The antenna problem is a none issue if you use your phone in a good signal area and vice versa. But folks that that claim it is a problem are just as guilty as those that claim it is not a problem, because they never allow for the other persons usage area. It just depends on the location you use your phone the most and the relative signal strength in that area.
Some people with Prox Sensor issues have had the problem fixed with 4.1 and some still have the problem. There seems to be three P.S. conditions, ones that just worked from the get-go, ones that were marginal and souped up with software 4.1 and fixed and last and most disappointing to the owners is the P.S. that is just plain defective and 4.1 did not help those folks at all.
If I was going to mention anything else that seem to be posted a little more than I would have expected is over heating during charging/discharging. I don't personally have a good feel yet whether 4.1 helped that problem or not but I would doubt that it did. It just seem like Apple acquired more than their fair share of defective batteries and or chargers and software while a programmer might claim even that could be fixed with software (you know how they are) I don't think so.
Short story - is it is still a bit of a crap-shoot but knowing the longer you wait to buy in the better the units will be as they weed out all the headaches that slipped thru their QC departments.

  • Iphone 4 Antenna

i got my black iphone 4 on April 23r, when i heard that the white iphone came out i also heard that it is a bit thicker and it has better antenna... now can apple replace yours for the white.... i'm kinda tired of the antenna issue, does the new black ones also come with better antenna???

I heard that it was thicker too and then I heard that the 'thicker' claim was rubbish and then I heard that it was confirmed as being no thicker, so 'go figure', I guess?
We've had no antenna issues with the iPhone4 (times 2) but we value them and have cases to prevent damage.  If you have any problems then we suggest that you get yourself a bumper.
Whether or not the antenna is 'better'?  Better than what?  We have tried three different networks and get different results in different places (no surprise there!), but all of them seemed to be at least as good as our old iPhone 3G phones on O2, making it difficult for anyone to give valuable qualitative information (in our experience).  We've selected the network that gives us best support for our normal use, which is probably the best that anyone can do?
Good luck with your own personal choice!

  • My proposal to Apple to make antenna issue right

This is not a gripe post and is only a suggestion of what I think Apple could do to make this issue right. I hope this post isn't removed.
I finally bought a bumper to fix my antenna issue as Apple has instructed. I really do like the bumper. It's nice. Here is what I would do if I were Apple. Since a bumper is needed to correct the issue I would include a black bumper in the box. Only black would come with the phone. This way everyone has a way to keep the issue from happening right out of the box. If anyone wanted a different color or another black one, they would have to buy it. This way Apple can still make money from their bumpers. Throwing in the black bumper would definitely take the heat off of the issue. I think people would be more inclined to buy a different color since they aren't feeling like they have to in order to fix the issue. Another upside is that once people see how nice the included bumper is, they will most likely want to buy one if there is another color that they really like.
This sounds like a good compromise to me. It would probably be cheaper for Apple in the long run also. Better to cut into bumper profits than to spend money and resources trying to fix the current phone (if they are even considering this). They can just work to make sure this doesn't happen with the next iPhone.

I don't think this goes nearly far enough though. The bumper provided no redress as far as my situation was concerned. Instead, I was left with a phone that continued to drop calls at home where this had never happened before with any of my older handsets, despite their using the same network.
That suks, you may have a different issue then. My issue was specifically touching the black line which caused the antennas to connect. I was able to repeat the test over and over with the exact same results every time. With the bumper on, my hand is no longer making that connection. My signal no longer drops due to this specific issue.
On a positive note, I would imagine that any other issues can be fixed with software. The only hardware issue I see is the external antenna. They did say that the method for choosing a tower has been changed. This could be affecting some users in a negative way. I'm betting most other issues will be cleared up with 4.1 or 4.0.1.
