Iphone 4 battery life draining battery usage and standby has (-) sign

I know there are forums with the same question, however, I need to know what to do if the restore as new doesn't work as well as trying to turn off the notifications. My battery life was fine until I up graded to iOS5.0.1.
I've also done a hard reboot tried to run the battery down and recharge to 100%. Nothing seems to work. I'm getting a usage and battery standby time of ( - ), no figures at all.
With only 2 short calls and a couple of minutes of internet usage my phone has gone from 100% at 7h this morning to 70% at 11h36. I've only noticed the battery drain over the last few days. The only changes were a couple of upgrades on the apps and even deleting those aren't working. I've also tried to delete my email accounts. I've reinstalled the email settings not with exchange but through gmail. My notifications are at a minimum and iCloud is switched off, the only thing that it is backing are my contacts.
Help! I travel far to get to work and need a reliable phone. I'm not sure whether to hold out for a new update on the software or take it to the genius bar.
Any help would be appreciated.

This seems to mainly affect the 4S however if you search the forum (hardware  and  using iPhone ) you will find many solutions that have either solved or dramatically improved the situation
My  4 did playup  with 5.0.1  up but picking a selection  of the solutions has returned mine to normal

  • Battery life and "Usage" and "Standby"

I checked the info under General > Usage and the "Usage" and "Standby" are exactly the same, which I am assuming means it is not really turning off when I am not using it. Is there a fix so my battery doesn't deplete in 8 hours?

Funny thing is, just after I posted what I thought was a solution, my phone blackscreened. An hour previously battery was sitting at 52 percent. There was a sudden plunge after I set up emails to my 4S.
After an hour on the charger, nothing. Screen still black. I called my reseller, who talked me through hooking it up to iTunes, which didn't recognise the phone at all.
We scheduled a service call for this morning with a view to to replace the phone as the tech said there was some kind of issue with it. He was adamant that iTunes should have recognised the device and synched it even if the battery was drained.
Meanwhile, an hour or so later, the 4s, which I'd placed back on the charger just to see whether it was a battery issue, jangled back to life. It took two hours to resuscitate and another half hour  to creep back up to 62 percent. Lost 10 percent in standby overnight and is now back on charger to get it up to 100 percent. Weird.

  • How can i improve the battery life of my iphone 5s, it drains to fast and i don't know what to do?

Take a look at this to make sure your settings are optimized to the best it can be.
If all else fails, try and restore through iTunes, set up as a new iPhone and manually sync your apps and media back to your iPhone.
If still persists after this, you might call Applecare and see if they can run a battery diagnogstics..

So my iPhone 4S started draining battery after recent update, battery got changed and it worked perfect for 3 days, all of a sudden the phone  shut down and now won't stay on unless connected to mains... Claims its at 100% battery but thats impossible as it was at 30% before it shut down randomly.
Cannot receive any signal "searching" constantly.

    HELP!

The iPhone includes a one year warranty. If an Apple store is not nearby, you can call AppleCare and handle an exchange under warranty over the phone. The exchange will be shipped to your door - someone must sign for the delivery so if no one will be at home, have it delivered where you work. You use the same box to return the existing iPhone back to Apple. Return shipping label and tape to reveal the box incuded - call the carrier with number incuded when the box is ready to be picked up. AppleCare will request a credit card in the event the existing iPhone is not returned within 10 days after the exchange under warranty is received.
Hardware can fail - it happens, which is why there is a one year warranty.

    Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.
Note: Charging with a FireWire-based power source is not supported, except on original iPhone.

  • Why does my ipod touch 4th gen battery life drain so quick

I've had my iPod touch for a few years now, but recently The battery life drains very fast, even if I go on one app it goes down half way after charging it full, I don't know why? My iPod will last me 30-1hour, is there a way of fixing this? :-)

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem that indicates a hardware problem. Likely a bad battery.
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one with a new batter for $79. They do not fix yours.

  • IPod touch 2G battery life draining

    Hello all,
Usually on my iPod, I turn off WiFi and lock the screen when I go to sleep and when I wake up 8 hours later, the battery is still full as it was when I left it and I can use it again happily. However, since last week, if I do this, the battery drains heavily, even when it's doing nothing. For example, this morning, I fell asleep with it fully charged, woke up 8 hours later and half the battery had gone. Now, when I spend £165 of my money on a device like this, I expect that I should get decent use and battery life out of it and not malfunction like this only 5 months after I got it. Is there any way I can stop this happening or should I send it back to Apple and see if they can fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Thomas Gardiner

the OP could turn it off at night. but they really shouldnt need to. i certainly never have done.
    try the troubleshooting steps: http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/troubleshooting/ipodtouch/
that will fix it if it's a software issue. if not, take it to apple.

  • Exchange Services Battery Life Drain

I have had my Samsung Galaxy Nexus for several months now.  In the last few days Exchange Srevices is eating my battery life.  I have searched on the internet for a soulution to this problem.  I have read several suggestoins, but nothing seems to be a permanent fix.  Does anyone know what is causing this & how to fix it?

Look in your applications or on your battery use screen. There is an application called BIP which is used to synchronize your contacts with certain applications and other accounts from what I understand. I notice on mine that when it shows up in my battery usage screen, my battery life is greatly diminished and will often just die overnight when it has around half battery left at bedtime. It seems that there are times that it's getting hung up and running in the background much more than it should. I have been force closing it when it shows up and my battery life goes back to normal, right, wrong or coincidence aside. It starts back up when needed but closes regularly when not for most of the time. I started noticing the same thing in about the same time frame you mentioned.

  • No data in Usage and Standby?

    Hi,
I have recently exchanged my white 16GB iphone at the local retail store, but have just noticed that since I exchanged it there does not seem to be any Usage figures in the general settings.
By that I mean the "usage" and "standby" are blank, above the message "usage times will be shown after iphone is fully charged".
To try and correct it, I reset the phone yesterday and it was on charge from 10pm last night to 7am this morning so I would have thought would be fully charged. (the battery meter appears to be fully charged)
Is anyone else experiencing this problem or has any advice on how to correct it?
    Thanks for your help.

When adding/creating an email account, the following presets are available.
    Exchange
    MobileMe
    Gmail
    Yahoo Mail
    AOL
If you selected the Yahoo Mail account preset when adding/creating the account, the account was created as an IMAP account with Push access available for received messages along with an option to enable or disable Push access for the account.
The data required to connect with the incoming mail server for an email account to check the incoming mail server for new messages is minute. More battery will be used the more often an account is checked for new messages, but this alone is not a significant battery drain and especially with a single email account. All server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are not synchronized with the server when the account is checked for new messages. For example, the account's server stored Sent mailbox is not synchronized with the server until the account's Sent mailbox is selected.
Push is not a constant fetch process. With an account that supports Push access for received messages, a new message received at the incoming mail server is "pushed" to the iPhone without the account having to be checked for new messages. In theory, Push access should use less battery compared to automatically checking the account for new messages, which isn't always the case and this also depends on the time interval set for automatically checking for new messages. You can have the account automatically checked for new messages every hour.
Depending on how much data is accessed compared to the number and length of phone calls when roaming internationally, data access can be much more expensive.

  • Please help with usage and standby time...

I see these posts about usage and standby time. In one case the stand by on his phone is three (3) days.
I just did a complete charge, a hard reset and right now my standby is only at 2 hours 28 minutes, and the battery meter is showing 97% battery life left. Apple says the stand by time can be as much as 300 hours, or 12 days
I have spoken to the help desk and they are not much help at all.
Why is my stand by so low….
    Need help please

Possible scenarios for low battery life:
    1. You're fetching new data for accounts every 15 minutes (Settings/Mail/Fetch New Data).
    2. You have background apps running (Skype, AIM, other social network or communication apps).
    3. Your GPS is active (navigation apps).
    4. FaceTime is on (Settings/Phone).
