IPhone 4 Contact Sync

I upgraded to OS 5 on my iPhone 4....how can I prevent from my contacts duplicating. I am using iCloud and it started when I upgraded so I am assuming iCloud has something to do with it.

Great. Thank you.
Now that I made that mistake by adding them to the "On My iPhone" folder, are you aware of a way there a way to import them to Gmail contacts? I would like to do this as a one time thing so I don't have to manually re-enter each contact.
Ideally, I would import all to Gmail, delete all contacts off iPhone, then re-sync Gmail with iPhone so all contacts transfer to the Exchange account.

  • How To Limit iPhone Contacts Sync

Check this out from a Mercedes forum. It works perfectly with my 3Gs and Mercedes.
    http://www.mbworld.org/forums/audio-electronics/314920-how-limit-iphone-contacts -sync-car.html#post3700222

I have struggled with this for a while - my wife and I want a single contacts database to keep on top of the moves, new numbers and emails of our friends, family and business contacts.  This really means we also need to keep our work contacts in the same place but we don't want to see one anothers.
I was doing what Scott mentioned.  Essentially I would use iCloud as a backup / source of all info in the cloud (for example when I needed a contact that I had spring cleaned from my phone).  I would occasionally true up what was on my computer and what was in iCloud (essentially a 'Select All' then drag everything from the Mac to iCloud and then in reverse).  Then in iTunes I would only tick the Groups I wanted synchronised.  I can tell you it was a lot more annoying than it sounds*.
Rander's answer was a Doh! moment for me and I think it's the best answer.  Sync everything everywhere then go into Contacts and tap Groups and deselect those you don't want to 'see'.
    *  Ignore the next bit if you're happy with Randers' answer.  I append it for other self helpers who may be able to do something with it...
It's worth noting that at somepoint, iCloud and Mac OS seem to have started playing better.  Slowly I seem to be getting more single records of contacts that are both on my Mac and on iCloud.  I suspect they were origninally new or appeared new (I've been tinkering with VCF cards to make Contacts treat contacts differently).
Having experimented, where there are two cards with the same details, one on the Mac and one on iCloud, it seems to need a name tweaked in one of them (I added an 'x' to the end), delete the duplicate, drag over the card named-X, then edit it to delete the X.  If you don't change the name and simply delete a duplicate then drag again the iCloud ghosts recreate the duplicate.

  • How to see iPhone contacts (synced from Google) in Messages app on Mac

I use Google contacts as my master contacts
My iPhone 7 (iOS 7) Contacts are synched with Google Contacts.
The Messages app in the iPhone shows the names of the people I'm messaging with - however
The Messages app in my iMac (Mavericks) does not show the names of the people I'm messaging with -- it shows just their phone number
How can I configure my iMac so that my Messages app shows the names of the people i'm messaging with?
From what i can tell, I need to figure out a way to sync my iMac Contacts app with the Contacts app on my iPhone via iCloud.
When I configure iCloud to sync contacts between the iPhone and the iMac, the synchronization is one-way only.  Any contacts in my iMac show up in my iPhone.  But all my other contacts in iPhone (synched from Google Contacts) do not show up in the iMac.
How can I synch ALL my iPhone Contacts to my iMac?  (including the ones that are in the iPhone because they were synched from Google Contacts).
    Thank you.

Sync the contacts on your Mac with Google Contacts as well... There is no need to involve iCloud.
Perhaps you should take a look at Google's help pages.

  • Deleting iPhone contacts & syncing with MobileMe

I had been syncing iphone contacts to a mobileme account and then wanted to instead sync them to another mobileme account (the main account in a family).  This is a problem since you cannot delete all the contacts on the iPhone (I had 2000 of them.) and iPhone syncing with mobileme does not allow you to replace contacts on the iPhone with what is on mobileme.  (iPhone allows only a merge which would duplicate contacts and add many I no longer wanted.)  After considering the "solution" offered by a "Genuis" which was to reset the iPhone and start over which is a painful process to reorganize the apps and login all apps that require it, etc.  Instead I developed the following procedure that worked great (This was with Mac OS 10.6.8 and IOS 4.3.5):
    1) Sync address book on Mac to make sure mobileme is up to date.
    2) Backup all the address book to an address book archive and/or select all contacts and save in a vcard file (File -> Export)
    3) Uncheck sync of contacts in MobileMe (Apple -> System Preferences -> MobileMe -> Sync tab)
    4) Select all contacts in Address Book and hit delete (Edit -> Select All, then hit delete)
    5) Select all groups in Address Book and delete (select first group, hold shift and click last group, then hit delete)
    6) Connect iPhone and sync.  Go to info tab in iTunes and select Sync Address Book Contacts, then Under Advanced, check Replace Information on this iPhone - Contacts.  This will transfer contacts (none) from Mac to iPhone which will delete all existing iPhone contacts.  Click apply and then sync.
    7) After sync, disconnect iPhone and verify there are no contacts on iPhone.
    8) On iPhone, go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Accounts -> MobileMe (login if you haven't done so), turn on Contacts (to sync with mobileme)
    9) In a few minutes, the contacts on the iPhone (none) will be merged with the desired contacts in MobileMe and the contacts in MobileMe should show up in the iPhone Address book - This completes the iPhone.
    10) On the Mac, go to Apple->System Preferences->Mobile Me->Sync tab and recheck Contacts.  Click Advanced, Reset Sync Data, select only Contacts and transfer contacts from MobileMe cloud to the Mac, and click Replace.
    11) In a few minutes, all contacts and groups from MobileMe should show up in the Mac Address book and you are done.

    Yes I did select merge.
Did it 2 times without anything happening on iPhone or MobileMe.
Third time it deleted my contacts on the iPhone.
Is there no option to tell it which direction to do the merge/sync?

  • IPhone contact syncing from another computer.

My Friend has an old 3Gs and wants to transfer all his contacts from his old 3Gs to his new iPhone 4s. Only catch is he doens't have a cpmpoture and was wondering if it is possible to do it using my MacBook despite the fact that his old phone was synced to his ex-girlfriends computer and has never been synced to mine.
    Can anyone help

Then it must be a 3G rather than a 3GS.  Probably the only option then is to transfer them to a gmail exchange account on the old phone, as explained here: http://transfer-iphone-contacts.blogspot.com/p/transfer-iphone-contacts-via-gmai l.html.  Then set up the same exchange account on the new phone and turn contact syncing to On.  Then be sure not to sync contacts with iCloud on the new phone.  (Trying to sync data with both iCloud and gmail exchange can create problems.)

  • Old iphone contacts sync to new iPad 3?

Had iPhones up until a year ago, then spent a year w no iOS devices (!), now starting fresh w iPad 3. Wanting to sync all my old iPhone Contacts to iPad, anything I should know?

Before you connect your phone to iTunes make sure you go to iTunes preferences>Devices and check to "Prevent iPods, iPhones...from syncing automatically".  Now connect your phone to iTunes, click on your iphone name under Devices on the left sidebar, go to the Info tab and check to sync contacts with address book.  Make sure you have at least one contact entered your mac Address Book.  Now sync in iTunes and if asked select merge contacts.

  • I have a new macbook pro.  I'm seeing my wife's iphone contacts on my icloud.  I can't figure out how to get my iphone contacts synced up with my new macbook and get rid of her contacts.  Suggestions?

I have a new macbook pro.  I'm seeing my wife's iphone contacts on my icloud.  I've done everything I know to do to make sure my apple id is correct and has my information.  I can't figure out how to remove her contacts and add my iphone contacts to the cloud or my macbook pro.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • HT201269 How do I get my iPhone contacts synced to my new iPad?

I just got a new iPad. I have an iPhone with tons of phone numbers and contact information on it. How do I get those on my new iPad without having to type them all in?

    Go to
Settings>iCloud(make sure it's the same apple I'd as your iPhone)>sign in if not>click on for contacts
It should sync maybe not immediately, give it a minute or two.

  • Yositme and iPhone contact syncing

I am unable to sync or import contacts from my phone which is a 5s fully up to date to my bmp which is on yosimite and up to date. I have my phone set to sync with iCloud and I'm logged in to iCloud on the mac including having it linked in the contact app itself but I can not find anyway to get contacts from my phone to the mac. So when I use messenger on the mac everyone shows up at phone numbers and I do not want to have to create new contact cards for everyone when they're all right there on my phone

    Hi Greenneck,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these syncing issues between your devices. If both your iPhone and your MacBook Pro are using iCloud Contacts, but the contacts in question do not appear to be syncing correctly, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • My iphone and my wifes iphone contacts synced together once i up loaded cloud.how do i seperate contacts?

    help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If they are part of a back up, the back up can't be restored to a Mac, you can only restore to a replacement device.
If they were in photo stream, enable photo stream on your Mac.

  • Syncing "On My iPhone" contacts to iCloud

I have been using iCloud to sync almost everything iCloud can sync across my Mac, my iPad, and my iPhone for as long as iCloud has been around without any issue, but i just noticed that some contacts on my iPhone, which were created on that device, have failed to sync with iCloud and hence the rest of my devices. It seems syncing is fine, but the issue appears to be that when creating the contacts, the iPhone doesn't automatically add them to any of my iCloud groups and instead just labels them as "On My iPhone" and keeps them just on the phone. I have two questions regarding this issues for you guys:
    1. How can I make my existing "On My iPhone" contacts sync with iCloud?
    2. How can I ensure new contacts created on the iPhone will be labeled as iCloud contacts? (I have made 100% sure "contacts" is selected as one of the iCloud syncing option across all my devices, and contacts sync fine from my Mac to the iPhone, but not the other way around.)
Thanks in advance for your replies!

    Anwer to question #1:
    1- go to Settings
    2- go to iCloud
3- turn off Contacts, then DELETE the iCloud contacts from phone. This will not delete the contacts created "On My iPhone", it will only delete the iCloud contacts that are saved to iCloud.
4- turn Contacts back on, then MERGE all the contacts.
5 - As etamayoz said, make sure you reset the Default Account under contacts to your icloud account, or other cloud connected account, otherwise any new contacts you create from the account named "On My Iphone" will not sync over iCloud.

  • IPhone to Outlook Contacts Sync

Would love to be able to have my iPhone Contacts sync to Outlook contacts, NOT the other way around. [The first time I tried it, it wiped out my iPhone contacts and put the old Outlook ones back in.]
Now, I see some improvement in the updated versions of iTunes, but I simply have no idea what the WARNING Screen is trying to tell me -- something about more than 5% of the contacts will be changed, etc, etc...CHANGED WHERE? My iPhone or my Outlook?
It would be so much easier if we had a choice to sync Outlook to iPhone or iPhone to Outlook without wiping either database. Is that too difficult to do?
    Anyone have a solution? Thanks!

The sync process for contacts with the supported application on your computer is a bi-directional or true sync process.
If the supported application on your computer has contact info and your iPhone doesn't, the contact info with the supported application on your computer will be transferred to your iPhone with the first sync and be kept synchronized afterwards with following syncs.
If the supported application on your computer does not include any contact info and your iPhone does, your iPhone will be erased of all contacts with the first sync.
If the supported application on your computer includes contact info and you have manually added contacts to your iPhone, you should be provided a merge prompt with the first sync, which should be selected. After the initial sync and merge, contacts will be kept synchronized with following syncs.
iTunes includes an option to replace contacts on your iPhone with the contacts in the supported application on your computer. After doing this, contacts will be kept synchronized with following syncs. There is no option to replace contacts in the supported application on your computer with your iPhone contacts.

  • Can't sync Address Book note field to iPhone contacts

    Hi:
I make heavy use of the "note:" field in my MacBook Address Book app. I store all kinds of detailed info about people, organizations, etc. in that field. I would like to be able to access that information on my iPhone 3G, but the phone's Contacts app has no corresponding "note" field.
Could this be a result of the way I imported data into my MacBook when I first got it?
In searching the fora, I found several people who said their iPhone contacts sync nicely with the Address Book note, and others who say it doesn't sync at all. Can anyone please shed some light on this for me?
    Thanks!

Not quite sure what you mean by "editing" but I've tried every method of selecting, deleting, cursor placement, backspacing, and typing I can think of -- again, with and without the Edit button clicked. I did seem to accumulate a huge number of duplicates along the way, and there were more than a thousand cards in my Address Book; maybe I went over the limit?

  • Why is contact sync from iphone or ipad to local iMac address book gone?

An option for syncing contacts from iphone or ipad to iMac seems to be gone.  From searching other posts on this topic, I see where contact sync is now "through iCloud" but is this the EXCLUSIVE choice for syncing contacts?  In other words, there is no longer any sync of contacts NOT through iCloud; I cannot sync contacts from my iPhone to my iMac without it all being stored in the cloud.
This is absurd.  My iCloud was hacked (not a password issue on my iMac or any local trojan/etc there are support threads about this) and tons of spam sent to my contacts when I used to sync through the cloud.  I turned off iCloud sync for contacts and opted instead to sync from phone to mac and from iPad to mac and this was working just fine, keeping me nice and updated every day no matter where I modified any contacts.
Now it seems that is no longer possible.  Is this by design?  Why on earth was this removed?  Is it a "feature" of these new products to remove working sync methods and force everything through the cloud??

The ability to sync contacts, calendar and browser bookmarks directly from a Mac running Mavericks to an IOS device via USB or WiFi has indeed been removed. Synching through iCloud, Exchange, WebDAV or a similar cloud service is the only option now. You can comment to Apple in this issue via their feedback page, if you wish:

Use the usb cable that comes with your iPhone to connect it to your Mac. Read the directions that came with the iPhone. Post in the iPhone forums where the iPhone gurus are. Google... Look to the right of your post in the "More Like This" column...
