IPhone 4 freezing/locking up at "Slide To Answer" screen, vibrates but doesn't ring?

I've had my iPhone 4 since the 23rd, but a few days ago I started having a problem which seems to be fairly common, but I can't seem to find a solution.
When I receive a call, my ringtone does not play but the phone vibrates as normal. In addition, The "Slide To Unlock" screen freezes and I'm unable to answer the call and eventually the caller hangs up/gets sent to voicemail. This is happening for 90% of the calls I get, pretty frustrating.
Occasionally, I'm able to answer a call if I repeatedly slide the slider across the screen, and it will eventually answer. This is good, but what's the use if I can't even hear my phone ring?
I've tried powering the phone off/on and a soft reset, but neither really helped.
Anyone have a solution?

My phone is doing the exact same thing. Seems like its more when my father in law calls it happens everytime, but only when he calls, nobody else. Im at a loss as to why it happens. I can press the volume buttons and top button and it eventually unfreezes but most of the time I miss the call because of it.

My Iphone 4 has locked me out. Homescreen will show up but cannot get slider to open keypad. SOmetimes if I tap enough things the key pad will display. When I enter the passcode it will not register. If I hit each passcode number twice it will register but then tells me I have the wrong code. I also have boxes and rectangles that appear to highlight items which never used to come up. Anyone have any experience with something like this?

Wow! Its impressive for you to load iOS 4.2 onto the iPhone 4S. How did you do that?
Moving along, press and hold both the power button and home button together for about 10 seconds. Then, press the power putton to turn it back on.

my iphone 4 is frozen on the slide to unlock screen. ive tried the sleep/awake button home button but it doesnt work can someone help me

By the slide to unlock screen, are you talking about the slider at the bottom of the screen after taking out of sleep mode?
And by trying the sleep/wake button and home button, are you talking about a reboot by holding both the power/sleep button and the home button until the apple logo appears and it reboots?  And that does not help release the issue with the slider?
Are you sure the iPhone is well charged?
If none if this helps, have you tried syncing/backing up to a compter and then restore by iTunes on a computer?
If you cannot do any of this it would be good to schedule a visit to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs try their hand and diagnostics.

Have Iphone 5c.  It vibrates, but will not ring.  Phone shows that the sound is all the way up.  Why will it not ring?

I had the the no sound issue also on my iPhone.  I found this trick to solve the problem and it give back all sounds on any iPhone.
    1- Go to Settings
    2- General
3- Scroll down to : Accessibility
4- Select Assistive touch (for more information about Using AssistiveTouch on your iOS device : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5587)
5- If the "White dot" doesn't appear - Click 3 times to the home bottom and you should get the "White dot" somewhere on your iPhone sceen (you can move the "White dot" where you want on the screen of the iPhone)
6- When you get the "White dot" - click on it
7- You will have 4 icons, click on the device icon
8- Click volume up (be sure the volume is at the maximum)
9- Click on the little bell (make sure the bell is not muted - I found, it's not very clear whic bell is on or wich bell is mute)
10- Call your iPhone - the problem of no sound should be fix (if the problem is not not fix be sure the volume is up and the bell is not muted - select the other bell by clicking on the bell -  call again your iPhone - the problem should be solve and it should work)
11- If you do not like to keep the "White dot" on your iPhone screen - click 3 times to the home bottom and the "White dot" should disappear (if you want it back - click 3 times to the home bottom and the "White dot" should be back)

  • My IPhone orientation freezes / locks and the only resolution Is to restart the iPhone... Help!

    Hi everyone!
im using an iPhone 6 Plus with OS 8.0.2 and sometimes when I unlock my phone the orientation is locked upside down or will not change to landscape mode...
i've tried the following to resolve without any luck:
    - Lock and unlock iPhone
    - Turn on and off orientation lock (Swipe up)
    - Rotate iPhone in all directions to to try and force the screen orientation to change
The only solution I have found which is really frustrating is to restart the phone with the lock and home button...
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks!
    Scott

That does happen.  It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system.  If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.

  • Iphone keeps freezing/locking up!!

I have owned my Iphone 3g for just over one month; I have had a few minor issues that really IMO were not that big of a deal. However, in the last 3 days with the latest FW my Iphone in the middle of an email response and or text response, etc. the phone FREEZES... I mean nothing happens until of course, I do a hard re-set; then it works again for a while then over time (one hour) freezes again. This is crazy; I am optimistic apple will fix all of this once and for all... but my job requires email access through Outlook and w/ a device that freezes until I re-set it; well IMO right now is wortless. Can anyone help and or offer any suggestions.
    ThxS!!

try doing a reset, hold down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.   See if that helps,

  • IPhone 4s (6.1) gets message or whatsapp message, vibrates but doesn't display new message notification on screen

    As per title really.
Whenever i get a text or whatsapp message my phone vibrates (sometimes twice as if i have two messages) but nothing is displayed on screen.
This is ever since updating to 6.1

    Hi,
I tested with Outlook 2013 and Windows 7, once the new incoming message becomes read, the "new mail" envelope disappears as it should.
Does this issue persist if you switch the view to others? I suggest we try to start Outlook with the switch "/cleanviews" to reset default view:
Press Win + R, type "outlook.exe /cleanviews" in the blank box, press Enter. This method resolves issues related to the corrupted views, and we can check the result again after Outlook resets default view.

  • Since updating my ipd and iPhone to iso8 they freeze lock up and generally starting to annoy me

since. the last update to 8.1.1 both my iPad and iPhone keep freezing locking up and really are starting to push me away from Apple , I was looking at theiphone 6 but not sure if it is worth it now or not

    Hello there, Richtucker.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for troubleshooting issues with an iOS device not responding:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on - Apple Support
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Unable to slide to answer when call comes in?

    Hi All,
Does this issue happens to iPhone 4 or all other generations of iPhone? I'm unable to slide to answer my phone calls at least 60% of the time and i have to try multiple times to slide which doesn't sometimes doesn't stick to my sliding??? Is there any suggestions or solutions to this? Sorry if this has been posted before.

A probably similar problem occurs sometimes on my own iPhone 4 and on my wife's iPhone 4.
When a call comes in, "slide to accept" does not work properly. It can be moved half-way across the screen but then it snaps back. Then I try to slide it again and again and eventually it works, before the call is lost. For me, this problem only occurs about 5% of the time (probably less often on my wife's iPhone), and I remember that it happened also sometimes with my old iPhone 3gs. This is very annoying.
I think that in this mild form the problem occurs very often. See, for example, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2486329
and there seems to be no solution so far.
Please, Apple, do something about this.

  • May have found a fix for iPhone 4 freezing/restarting/locking up issue.

Ok, so I am one of the many who have suffered from my iPhone 4 freezing, restarting and/or locking up on me.
I have combed through the discussion threads searching for a fix but never found one that was proven to work. Things like hard resets, restoring from backup, restoring from new etc... People would claim one of the above fixes worked only to return to the thread minutes, hours or days later to report that the problems had started again.
I understand that the fix that worked for me may not work for everyone, but I'm sure it will work for some. It is a simple fix that I have not seen mentioned in any thread and thought it would be worth sharing.
Fix: Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
My iPhone 4 was either freezing, restarting or locking up on almost a daily basis, sometimes several times a day. Since resetting my settings almost a week ago, I have had no problems!
It is the simplest and least inconvenient fix I have seen, so it's worth giving it a shot!
Good luck, and I hope it works for most if not all of those experiencing these issues!

My iphone 4 just started to warm up and the battery is draining quick.  Closed everything and reset to no avail.  Turned off bluetooth, increased push time and checked location settings for new applications.  Weather Doodle was a bit suspicious as it had a purple direction indicator next to the setting.  The only other new app I installed was Lego instruct.  I disabled one of the 4 mail accounts I had that is having network difficulties, went to airplane mode and still I see %1 drain every 10 or 15 minutes.  I'll remove the new new apps and reset to see if it is related to the new apps.  If that doesn't work, I'll try email account reset at home wifi and see if that fixes the issues.
    Thank you for the information.

  • IPhone 1.1.3 Freeze & Lock & Hang

Since iPhone 1.1.3 update, my iPhone has frozen and locked up on several occasions. A lock so hard that not even power reset affects it. It seems that after a while though, after iPhone chooses to sleep and you wake it again, the locked state is gone but it will happen again. Lots of people seem to be complaining but I see no official response from Apple that there is a problem or that a patch is soon forthcoming. When locked, by the way, your phone won't receive calls and I have missed several because of this.

    Same issue here!
My original phone was the most stable phone I ever owned under 1.1.2. Then I upgraded to 1.1.3 and all **** broke loose.
My phone would randomly and VERY frequently freeze with the spinning wheel/gear in the middle of the screen.
The only thing that would unfreeze it would be to hold both buttons until the phone powered off. And yes while frozen the phone would get VERY hot. Whatever froze the phone apparently was still sucking the battery life causing the battery to get hot. Much like when you're talking on your iPhone for hours the battery will warm up due to usage.
After resetting/restarting the iPhone the battery would be neary depletion.
I would then wait about 10 mins and wouldn't you know it...locked up again.
It was getting extremely frustrating. Contacted Apple, they swapped me for another phone (running 1.1.2).
I waited a few days, then upgraded that to 1.1.3. Wouldn't you know it....it started locking up immediately after that update. Just like the other phone (after updating).
Now I'm on my 3rd phone running 1.1.2. I REFUSE to update this until 1.1.4 because I cannot continue to miss calls, have a hot battery in my pocket, and constantly keep checking my phone just to see if it's locked up.

  • Iphone 5 freezes on lock screen

iphone 5 freezes on lock screen

I reset my phone everytime my phone freezes but did not do the following steps. I will try and let you know. Thing to note here is, this never happened before ios7. I also noticed, freezing often happens with a bunch of "whatsapp" messages showing up on my locked screen. I have disabled that feature to see if it solves the problem. Thanks for taking time to reply.
