Iphone 4 (gsm) won't restore do a system restore running ios 6.1.3

So last week I was trying to text someone and was receiving their texts but it wouldn't let me send any. Then a window popped up saying storage was almost full. I have a 32 gig and am only using around 5.5. I've tried using icloud to backup but it just gets stuck. I have synced and backup my phone but now I can't even to an ios update to 7. The message is something about the device not allowed being allowed to run the ios?? It was my understanding that it should work.
Please help!

Good question. Don't know as I have never tried doing that with an older iOS when a new one is available. I have tried finding documentation here, but have not been able; maybe you can search.
This might be a good starting off point:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2110
In anycase,I would think erasing is not the same as restoring so perhaps the phone would not be upgraded. There is only one way to find out; take the plunge . Whatever you do or find, post back here, with results.

• HT201263 I did a factory reset on my iPhone and it won't restore from the apple logo, HELP!!!!

DId a factory resent on my iPhone and it now won't restore itself from the apple logo even when I hold down the "on" button and the "home" button together

Next time, remember to first turn iMessage & FaceTime off, delete the iCloud account, then restore/reset the phone. To fix, if you setup a support profile with Apple, you can login to your support profile & remove the phone. If not, change your Apple ID password.

• IPhone 3gs restores to iOS 4.0 but won't restore to iOS 5 'Unknown Error 1'

I have an iPhone 3gs 32gb that accidentally went through the washing machine a couple of years ago. It was dead and rested peacefully in its box under the bed until a few months ago when I found it and thought - let's try turning it on. Low and behold the little begger worked. It was pretty beat up, so I ordered a new rear case for it and a few fiddly screws later it looked as good as new. It was making and recieving calls ok and recieving email fine - I thought great, I'll plug it into iTunes (10.6.3 on my Windows Vista laptop) and update it. This is when the problems started.
As soon as it tried to install iOS5 it got to the point where it says 'restoring iPhone firmware' and then boom, I get the error message 'Cannot be restored unknown error 1'. I tried installing in DFU mode... same thing happens. So I brought it to work and managed to install iOS4.0 via my work iMac PPC G5 running iTunes 9.2.1 - again, everything worked fine. Calls in and out, internet (both 3g and WiFi) gps, etc., all worked like a dream. So I moved to another iMac that was running the latest iTunes and all the latest updates for Mac OSX. Tried to install iOS5... same issue. 'Cannot be restored unknown error 1'. Arrggghhh!
There doesn't seem to be any hardware issues because the phone works great on iOS4, I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong when I try to update it. I've also tried downloading the IPSW file and doing CTRL/Option restore and pointing to the file, still with no joy.
Can anyone shed any light on the situation?

Are you sure your replacement is an iPhone 3GS and not a 3? The iPhone 3 can't be updated beyone iOS 4.2.1. If your 3GS was using a newer iOS you won't be able to restore from the backup (the 3GS could be updated to the newes iOS, 5.1). You can check your model number (on the back of the phone) against this list to tell: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939.

• Change iPhone to iPod: won't restore/sync

I have an iPhone 3G that no longer has phone service, but otherwise worked perfectly fine. Took it to AT&T store and they wiped it clean and told me to Restore and then sync.
I have restored 3 times, but the iPhone continues to show only an arrow indicating "connect to iTunes."
My older son has an iPod & am able to sync or do whatever to that device. Attempting to turn older iPhone into an iPod for younger son.
Unfortunately, not being prompted to sync when connected to iTunes. ANY HELP out there, I'm desperate!!!

• TS3694 iPhone 4 crashed, won't restore.

So here are the messages I'm getting. I hope someone can help me!
iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore with iTunes.
clicked the "restore" button
clicked "restore and update"
"Preparing iPhone for restore" (status bar in iTunes)
the status bar came up on the phone and started loading got to about 30%
"Restoring iPhone software" (staus bar in iTunes)
phone status bar goes to about 70%
"Verifying iPhone restore"
"Restoring iPhone firmware"
phone status bar stays at about 70%
Error window pops up "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)
I'm running the latest versions of iTunes and iOS, have no firewalls, and have forced shutdown.

Error 1 seems to be a bad error. Try to Restore firmware again. Try to Restore on different computer. If you still have Warranty or AppleCare Coverage take iPhone to Apple for resolution.

• My iPhone 6 Plus won't restore from iCloud Backup

I had backed up my iPhone 5S nightly, including an hour before I got into the apple store to get my 6 Plus. It will not restore from iCloud to the new phone, no matter which of the old backups I choose. Has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you solve it?

Yes, yes & yes, I am on my home wi-fi & have tried on a personal wi-fi hotspot while out, I had enough iCloud space before, but after deleting my last backup I've got loads & my phone stopped automatically backing up, so have been trying using the backup now button.

• New iphone 5 that won't restore as the software is too old on it

Hi guys,
I've just got a new iphone 5 which im trying to restore from my old iphone 4, but when i try to do this it says i cant because the software on my iphone 5 is too old.

Sammie

• My iphone 4 gsm only displays "restore needed".

itunes says device locked needs passcode. no way I can enter one because it doesn't boot up that far. tried rebooting? what else can i do?

Try to respring to do this hold power button and the home button at the same time and wait for the Apple logo to show up then it should turn of and on and again show you the apple logo let go of the buttons and let it boot and see if this works if not you need to post wheather this issue occurred during jailbreaking or any other form of software ulteration because from past user experience this is a common jailbreaking issue I currently am not jailbroken nor do I condone the use of such harsh methods they use to access the root directory of ios devices. So please provide more information so our users can help you.

• I have deleted all my sms/iMessage but storage usage shows message is still consuming 4MB space. Is it a bug of ios7.0.2? Using iphone 5 A1429 16GB and restored to iOS 7.0.2 15 times as new phone.

But unfortunately turning on automatic error sending I found the default weather app, iCloud , exchange mail, main manu background crashes every time. Moreover the battery life is pathetic. It was better in iOS 6.1.4. Please don't suggest to turn off every features to increase battery life; turning of the phone is rather better then turning of the features which I bought with lot of money. Now this is hilarious :-( background crashes every time. Moreover the battery life is pathetic. It was better in iOS 6.1.4. Please don't suggest to turn off every features to increase battery life; turning of the phone is rather better then turning of the features which I bought with lot of money. Besides, my operator charges more for data then the basic mobile video telephony calls over 3G circuit switched network ( which is supported by samsung galaxy S2 and many other smartphones even the older I unsmart laggy symbians & Chinese non brand *****) and Alas! iPhone FaceTime does not support this basic mobile video telephony call over 3G CS network (only supports over wifi and cellular data which are again costly here). Now this is hilarious :-(

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
Also consider deleting and reinstalling the Mail Account in question.

• IPhone 4 (GSM) shuts down at 100% battery after updating to iOS 7.0.4

I have recently updated to iOS 7 now that is seems all the kinks have been fixed.. It was on the last iOS 6 update for the iPhone 4 which I believe to be 6.1.3.
Now everytime it is unpluged for a charger (usb or mains power) It dies pretty much instantly.
Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
Turning Brightness down

• HT4623 iPhone is asking me to restore after ios update, did I loose everything?, what do I do??

I updated itunes today (after I did a backup of my daughter's iphone), when we went to do the ios update on the phone, all looked ok and install began. Now it is asking to restore to factory, and nothing is showing up on phone at all. What can I do?.....Did we loose everything? Itunes looks normal. and library is there.

a large iOS update requires you to restore from your backup. If you did the update through iTunes, it should've automatically created a backup, so just plug it in and restore

• HT6346 I can't restart iPhone 4 now.later I restore lasted IOS 7.1.2 again.this phone is sim not activate.how to solution?

I want restart to new iPhone.
how to do?

Use a sim from the wireless provider to which the iPhone is locked. Sim does
not have to be associated with an active account, but it does have to be from
the wireless provider to which the iPhone is locked.
If that is not the problem, please provide the complete exact wording of the
error message you are getting.

• IPad won't restore after iOS 7.1.2

Finally downloaded the 7.1.2 update but I wish I hadn't. After downloading on my iPad 3, I got the "connect to iTunes screen." Once there, iTunes says my ipad is in recovery mode and i need to download a(nother) software update. 45 minutes later, after downloading the entire file, I get a file corrupter err 1403 message. I tried again. 45 minutes later, the same result. i turned off my firewall. same thing. Apple wants to charge me $20 to chat with a service tech (after THEIR update fried my iPad). Any help from someone NOT affiliated with Apple would be appreciated.
