IPhone 4 hangs when accesing Contacts

Friends:
My iPhone 4 with the latest software freezes when I try to access a contact. I have to reboot it and it sometimes fixes the problem, but inevitably the problem comes back after a few days. My only solution is to put many of my contacts on my favorites list.
I have backed up and restored the phone with no luck.
The phone still exits to the home screen with the button press after a hang, but accesing the phone afterwards returns to the hang.
Any ideas?

Okay, I managed to sort everything out. After researching, I found that you'll need to do a few things.
1. Hold down the lock and home button so that you go into safe mode (DFU)
2. Go to another computer with iTunes so that you can sync and restore it back to its original state and default settings (before the update, in my case back to 4.3.3). Preferably not with the latest iTunes (try version 9). I tried restoring it on the latest iTunes and it kept prompting me to restore and download the latest ios 5 and an error kept popping up.
3. Once you downloaded and restored back to the original state(4.3.3), try again and sync with the latest iTunes that had all your backup information. From there, download and update your software to 5.0.1. Make sure you leave it alone and not run any programs so that it doesn't lag. Make sure there's a good internet connection for you to download.
4. Just watch out for it from time to time and see how it progresses. I made the mistake of restarting the computer or running other programs. But this time, it worked for me and it restored everything, even my apps. My iPhone is now up to date.
I got all this information from another discussion I found, but I forgot what the actual link was. Sorry for that. But I hope I got just about everything right.

my son had this problem. I went to the apple store and they wiped out and restored the phone.. They said that was all they could do but that I should call our phone carrier and ask them. I did. They asked if in the top left side, next to battery power there was a icon of a half moon. There was. They said to go in to settings and go to "Do not Disturb" and turn it off. I did.....problem solved!!! Somehow "do not disturb" was turned on and that is what happens if it is!!

Try resetting >
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, try restoring > Backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software

IPhone connections hangs when sending email after upgrade.

After upgrading to 2.0 firmware on my first generation IPhone, the phone now regulary hangs when sending email via smtp. Even if I try to close the connection by putting it into AirPlane mode and back again it still hangs and from that point onwards doesn't check or send any new emails. If I then shut the phone down and restart it looses the email as it's not either in the sent or outbox folders. This has happened quite a few times since upgrading. Does anybody have any advice?

Found this useful tidbit by mdwelsh231 on another thread:
"I'm having this problem too. Rather than rebooting the phone, an even easier solution is to hold down the Home button for several seconds (I believe it's 8 sec) which will kill the Mail application and return you to the home screen. Restarting Mail (by tapping the Mail icon) will cause it to reconnect. I find that this resolves the connection hanging issue. However, it is still kind of a pain. I suspect a bug in the 2.0 iPhone firmware. "

Hangs when adding contacts

I'm trying to add a bunch of contacts to my ipad2 and it keeps hanging when I hit done. Any thoughts?

In addition, iMessage will need to be properly set up on their device and you must have the correct contact information corresponding to that set up.

BUG REPORT: iPhone 4 Crashes When Adding Contact to Favorites

Here are the exact steps I went through to reproduce the problem.
Go to settings and set up an exchange account to work with Google Sync. The instructions are here:

After syncing your contacts, go to the Phone app. Go to Favorites and hit the "+" button to add a favorite. Use the search bar to find a contact (important). Once you find the person you want, select them from the list, and when you do, the app crashes.

I have no idea how to share this bug with Apple.

Before doing that though, try to confirm that the same thing happens on other iPhone's and it does it after a reset or restore.

You need to do the basic troubleshooting steps as described in the iPhone User Guide (Appendix B):
Reset phone
Restore in iTunes using a backup
Restore in iTunes as new (without using a backup)

I deleted a contact out of my iPhone 4S but when I go to send a message the contact appears although that individual is no longer in my address book. I deleted all text and call history pertaining to the deleted contact but still shows up.

Since purchasing a new iPhone 5 and macbook pro with retina display I have decided to keep the iPhone 5 for phone contacts only, and the macbook for email contacts only .. To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

IPhone 4s (7.0.2) hangs at 'Syncing Contacts' with iTunes 11.1

There seems to be a myriad of these various syncing issues posted; none of which have been answered and none that are exactly what I'm experiencing.
My wife's 4s (iOS 7.0.2) has been hanging at syncing Contacts on iTunes 11.1 (iMac; Mountain Lion) the past several days. It never gets past "Syncing Contacts".
Doesn't anyone have any advice. I've hard re-booted her iPhone; re-booted the iMac.
We don't have this problem with either my iPhone 5 (7.0.2), her 2nd-gen iPad or her old iPot Touch.
We share the same contacts and calendars across all of these devices and the iMac.

May have solved it so am posting back.
I had tried several times to sync the 4s after turning off the syncing of 'Contacts' (but telling iTunes to "retain" the contacts that are on the phone and NOT delete them). That managed to get through all other sync stages. However it still wouldn't sync completely; again hanging at 'Syncing Contacts' whenever I would turn that feature of the sync process back on.
Just this morning I opted to Repair Permissions on the iMac's hard drive. I noticed severl repairs made to iTunes-related files' permissions.
Tonight on the first try, the 4s synced trouble free.
