IPhone 4; Have tried updating but stuck in recovery mode.

Here it is,
Just got my iPhone 4 and have tried to update it to the new iOS 5 software that has been released. I plugged it in, pushed update and restore and everything that your supposed to do normally.
But now instead of working, it is now stuck in recovery mode and cannot seem to get it out of there! I have tried many methods but cannot seem to find one that actually works!
Any help is greatly appreciated as I really want my phone up and running again!!!
Cheers,
Max.

try to put your phone in recovery mode. plug into itunes and hold down the home button and top button until apple logo appears and then let go of the top button only. the phone should display plug into itunes.let go of the home button when this happens. disconnect iphone and plug it back in itunes should recognize it is in recovery mode. hit the restore button on summary page.

Try a reset, hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.

My son let one of his friends use his ipad. The next time he tired to use it he could not get it unlocked, I tired to unlock it but it kept telling me that I had the wrong pass code. With out me knowing my son continued to tire until it completely disabled it self.

You may have to do this several times.
Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • IPad 2 and ios5 update problem(stuck in recovery mode)

    Hi,
I have been trying to upgrade to ios 5 on my ipad2 and have had a couple of failures (the same as most people have had).
i tried running it once more and it went beyond the validating install with apple part and then i recieved and error code 3004 and my ipad is now stuck in
recovery mode, all i have on my screen is the itunes logo and usb cable.
In itunes it only gives me an option of restoring to factory settings. if i look in itunes preferences and backups it gives my last one as 18.33 but it isnt there
i really am at a loss as to what to do next.
Any help will be gratefully recieved  Regards Adrian

Here's how I fixed this on my MacBook Pro.
With your device connected, in iTunes, Option-click the Restore button.
You'll be asked to select the file to use to Restore. Go To Folder (Command-Shift-G): ~/Library/iTunes/
then into the proper "XYZ Software Updates" folder ("iPad Software Updates" for example), you'll find the file to use to update.
If you have more than one, select the one that ends with "5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw".
This resolved the "internal error occurred" I had with my iPad 2.
Make sure you read the warnings that pop up during the process; this will remove everything you have on your device, so you'll need a working backup, or a way to sync your data.
    Good luck.

  • Tried to download latest iphone update now stuck in recovery mode.

Tried wirelessly updating iPhone 4 with the lates update.  The initial attempt failed and gave me an error message.  On the second attempt it seemed to work until the screen showed it needed to be connected to itunes. When I did this itunes said the phone was in recovery mode and needed to be reset to factory settings.  The phone has not been backed up for a while.  Is there a way to get out of recovery mode without losing all photos and video that have not been backed up?

Sorted it now, took it to Apple store and explained etc. was nothing could do but restore the phone. Was told to make sure itunes on PC was up-to-date version before updating iphone which could have caused the error.

  • After update to iOS 7.1, iPhone 4 won't work. Stuck in recovery mode. Won't restore.

    Hello,
So I'm pretty baffled at this point. Last night I started downloading the iOS 7.1 update as my iPhone 4 was plugged into iTunes. The update did not complete on my phone. Instead, the dreaded "Connect to iTunes" logo appeared. After researching last night and again this morning, I have not found a solution.
When I plug my phone into iTunes, this message appears: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." Then, I have the option to restore iPhone.
So, having come to terms that I will lose all data - luckily my photos and videos have all been uploaded to my computer - I began restoring it. As it's downloading, this message then appears:
I've read through the "More Information" page several times. Checked my host file, added the "# " in front of the gs.apple.com IP address, restarted the computer, and still no luck. I haven't tried updating or restoring on another computer yet, but I have a feeling that won't change anything - I've read other people's accounts and that step just didn't work.
I updated my iTunes to the lastest version and restarted. Nothing.
I downloaded tinyumbrella and RecBoot to try and exit the apparent recovery mode. This didn't work. I have tried numerous times restarting the phone (holding down the home button and power button) with different variations of unplugging the USB from my laptop, letting go of the home button when the Apple logo appears, holding down the + volume button along with the power button, etc.
Does anyone know what I should do? Would calling Apple help? Or would going in person to an Apple store be better? Would they replace my phone? I don't see how this can be resolved unless the Geniuses have a universal restart method that bypasses everything. I need my phone for work and would be okay with just restoring the phone. Note: My phone has not been jailbroken.
Really hope someone can help. I would greatly appreciate it...
    Thank you!

The fact that gs.apple.com was in your host file to begin with is an indicator that your computer was used to jailbreak or hack an iOS device at some point in the past. You can not get help here for a hacked or jailbroken device. If your phone was hacked or jailbroken, Apple won't touch it.
RecBoot and Tinyumbrella are hacking tools.
    Google "iPhone DFU mode".
Try restoring in DFU mode. If that doesn't fix it, make an appointment at the genius bar and see what Apple has to say about it.

  • My iPad security code was reset, but I can't remember it. I have tried to restore it in Recovery mode, but it still asks for the passcode, and therefore can't be found in iTunes. What else can I try?

How can I reset the passcode/connect the device to iTunes/restore?

If you follow the steps below closely, it should not ask you for passcode.
    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • HT1414 Can anyone shed some light on my problem with iPhone 5 please? I am 'stuck' in recovery mode and do EVERYTHING that's been suggested online. (Even Apple at Bondi said 'Oh...um...oh that' doesn't sound too good.') when I called them for help.

To say that I am livid would be the greatest understatement EVER made in the ENTIRE history of the planet. Last night my iPhone 5 decided it would go into Recovery Mode. (That is.....a Black screen showing the iTunes logo, a white 'up' arrow and with the white cable/plug at the bottom of the screen).
(Hold onto your Samsung Galaxys people - do NOT throw/give them away when you 'update (yeh right) to an iPhone).
So I turned it off and left it off all of last night. I arrived at work this morning to 'sync/restore' it with my computer where it asked me to install the latest version of 'whatever it is the latest version of.' HOWEVER, as I do not have the administrative rights to do such things on my work computer, I was unable to do so and now I have been riding the 'Apple Merry-Go-Round' since 0630hrs (WAST). It comes up with the following message in a window on the screen:-
'The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14).'
Gee - thanks for that - I'd never have known unless I saw that little window!!!! The fact that my screen has frozen and I am unable to install, sync or restore anything kind of gives it away!!!
'Just go to the nearest Apple Store' I hear you say. That is a 'tad' hard as I work in The Pilbara Region of North West, Western Australia (for 4+ weeks at any one time) and won't be back in 'civilisation' until next Monday week (10th of Feb, 2014)........Talk about being held to ransom by technology!! I have asked other people at work (who ALL have iPhones) and when I showed them the screen (& the whole ridiculous process) they screwed their faces up as they had never seen such a thing. Some people NEVER get asked to update/install anything on their phones.....So, I have to wonder why mine 'asks me'.......constantly.
I fear that my 'Apple' is not an apple but that it is actually a 'Lemon.'
Hey 'Apple' - don't let me get a hold of you!!
Oh yeh - the opening hours actually say Sun 10:00am til 4:00pm or even 6:00pm in some places.......how convenient - when you call (them on their landline FROM a landline) you get the engaged signal!

Thanks for that 'sberman' - because my iPhone is backed-up to my work computer (only at this stage) I have had to call our IT Department in Adleaide. (4 times this morning). The last guy managed to get the phone into 'DFU Mode' - no more recovery mode screen - (kind of 'asleep' perhaps) from my understanding of same. I am awaiting a call again from IT so they can get my computer to actually recognise my iPhone on the C Drive. This also happened to  one of my colleagues in Newman (WA). She got so frustrated with the whole process that she bought another phone the next time she was in 'civilisation.' She hasn't had any problems since. (Cross fingers).
    Thanks again, Sandra2474.

  • My iPhone was unlocked. Now is stuck in recovery mode. How do i backup my files before I restore

my iphone 4 was unlocked (w/ no sim in it of course). i tried to update my iphone to 6.1.3 & in the midst of doing so, it brought itself to recovery mode. i'm ok w/ restoring it but how can i get all my pictures & videos off of  it (if that's even possible).
*might i add, i'm going to be a college student next year & i took pictures of all my documents i'll be needing so I REEAALLLLY need these pictures.

Once iPhone is in Recovery mode, data is invariably lost. Backup is required to be done before starting Restore. Sorry.

  • IPhone 4, Home button not working, stuck in recovery mode and boots straight into voice control.

After trying everything and failing I still cant work out why this is happening.
I cant restore my phone in itunes, just get an error. My phone boots into voice control for no reason and to top it off the home button stopped working along with all these errors. It cant be a hardware issue. I sent it in and got told I had water damage which is impossible as I treated the phone like gold.
Does anyone have a reasonable explaination as why this is happening and maybe even a solution?
    Thanks!

try to put your phone in recovery mode. plug into itunes and hold down the home button and top button until apple logo appears and then let go of the top button only. the phone should display plug into itunes.let go of the home button when this happens. disconnect iphone and plug it back in itunes should recognize it is in recovery mode. hit the restore button on summary page.
