IPhone 4 in recovery mode

Hi there
Firstly I'm not the most techno sharp person so I apologise for needing an idiots guide in advance.
I woke up the other morning to find my phone not working and showing the connect to iTunes logo.
After searching in various places I downloaded tiny umbrella but this hasn't worked as it won't show as being connected to this.
I have tried to restore this to factory settings on iTunes but this hasn't worked either as coming up with error box.
So at the moment I'm left with a brick and its all because my phone auto did an update without me asking it to over night while plugged in.
Can anyone help me please and as I said previously I would appreciate it in simple terms and no jargon etc if possible please?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

If your iPhone was subjected to any form of jailbreaking, there's nothing that can be done.
