IPhone 4 keeps crashing and rebooting, charges slowly

Last week, suddenly my battery dropped its charge in a couple of hours then went totally black, unable to charge or do a hard reset. It is one month out of warranty ;-). Figured it was just the battery after one year's use so went to my local fixer and he agreed it may well just be a battery issue and so he replaced it with a new one.
New battery took FOREVER (2 days) to charge and even then would not go to 100% - maxed out at 94%.
But here's the kicker : all the while, during the charge (unless I had it off) it kept crashing and rebooting itself. The full cycle (crash to crash) is about 3 minutes... sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.
When it is plugged in - in the couple minutes before it crashes again! - if I use an app, the battery drains... again, even while plugged in!
I cannot sync it to my MBP as it crashes before the sync can happen.
And then last night it went black and totally unresponsive (again) so I thought it had totally entirely crashed again and/or the battery was dead. But this morning it was actually warm - like something had been running in there. The warmth is mostly on the right side (looking at screen).
And though it did not respond at first when I tried to hard reset (just in case), I suddenly got the "plug me in" symbol - battery was drained. I've plugged it in again and gotten the charge as high as 88% but it's still going through the crashing cycle.
Any ideas on cause/fix? I have located the (hundreds? of) crash logs if anyone might be able to help...
Many many thanks!!

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, resest, restore from backup, restore as new.
If you still have problems after going through ALL the recommended troubleshooting steps, then you likely have a hardware issue.  You'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation.

  • Iphone 4 Keeps crashing and restarting, No help from Applecare

My iPhone 4 keeps crashing and restarting and AppleCare is unable to duplicate the issue or resolved the issue.
Recently my iphone randomly started crashing or it would freeze then i have to restart using power and home button, These are few things that I have already tried to resolve the issue:
1: Restore to factory settings and start over from scratch.
    2. Deleted recently updated apps to see which one could be causing the issue, but the issue is still there.
    3. Re-downloaded ios 5.1 and did a fresh restore.
After doing all this I called Applecare and they suggested to send in my phone and they will replace it and send me a new one since Im still having the issue after doing all of the above. Today I recieved my phone back from Applecare stating that the issue was resolved or not duplicated. So I did a restore once again and from one of the saved files that I had setup as a new phone. In the last 6 hours my phone has froze once, and crashed twice. I called Applecare again and he suggested to send the iphone in again and he will put in the notes to give it max time to detect the issue.
Are there any other alternatives? The closest Apple store is 140 miles from my house and Im fedup with sending in the phone and getting it back w/o the issue being solved. Thanks for the help in advance.

  • Having trouble syncing with my new iPhone cable, keeps crashing and saying that the device cannot be found

The iTunes sync keeps crashing and saying that the device cannot be found. I have bought a new cable recently off eBay and it manages to charge my iPhone when I plug it into my macbook but its not allowing me to sync or import pictures.

  • My iphone 4 keeps crashing and restarting.

I just bought my iphone today and it having the same problem. It keeps crashing and going to black then restarting. With either a red or yellow color that is coming up over the screen. What's going on and how can I get this phone to work?

Follow the steps below to put the iPhone into recovery mode and restore the software:
    1. Unplug the iPhone from the computer and make sure its turned off.
    2. Hold down the home button and plug the iPhone into the computer
    3. Keep holding down the home button until the connect to iTunes screen appears on the phone
    4. Click "Restore" in iTunes
    5. When the iPhone is finished restoring, make sure you set it up as a new iPhone and do not restore from a backup.
If the problem still happens after following the steps above and restoring the software, take it back to where you bought it and get a replacement because it is most likely faulty hardware.

  • IPAD keeps crashing and rebooting

I updated my iPad mini to IOS 8.3 the other day.  The problem is that it crashes and reboots on its own every 3-4 minutes.  I did a factory reset hoping this would solve the issue but it did not. Can someone help me?

    reset all settings
    settings-general-reset-reset all settings
    now reconnect to wifi
settings- wifi- click network name- enter password - join
if issue persists back up and restore as new via iTunes
    Peace, Clyde

  • My iPhone apps keep crashing and my sleep button no longer works

So my apps keep crashing when I try to open them; everything from games to my email.  My sleep/power button no longer works so I can't even shut it down to restart it.  I don't know if I should just let the battery die and hope that by rebooting it will work again?  Doesn't really make sense why they won't open anymore.

  • Iphone 3GS keeps crashing and wont hang up after out & incoming calls after repairs

I have had my iphone 3GS back to vodafone after I could not make calls, kept saying call failed!. I did all the troubleshooting tips, was okay for a short time, then shortly started doing same thing.I took it back to the store and on that occasion the assistant took the phone out of the protective cover i always had it in  to replace the simcard in case it was this that was causing the problem ,then he dropped it onto the shops wooden floor and it bounced, he picked it up & went bright red & kept apologising , I then said if I have any more problems with it then I will come back & see him & he said yes. Shortly after I noticed the sim cover on top of phone was missing but i could see the simcard inside, so I returned to the store & informed them of this, i was advised by the earlier assistant 'Craig' that he thought that the sim tray was underneath the simcard which he then removed the simcard, then advised me he didn't want to go poking about in it in case it was inside and he would send the phone to be repaired & gave me a replacement phone until mine was back. I waited approx 2 weeks before receiving a call from Vodafone saying they would repair it if I payed over £100! as it was not covered under my insurance,  I informed them the assistant dropped the phone in store and then i noticed the problem & was then told they would investigate this and call back, 10 minutes later they called back to say it would be a free repair. Since the repair I have had nothing but trouble with the phone crashing when I access apps , sticking on the hangup screen with in & out going calls for approx 10 minutes or more, when I turn phone on the Apple logo stays on the screen for long periods off time. When I access my music the track will change part way through to another track & also sometimes refusing to charge. I am fed up with going back & forth to the store which is quite a distance from my home & the phone has more problems since it was ''dropped'' & then ''repaired'' & I am at a loss of what to do. I feel I have been treated unfairly and gone along with all Vodafone asked of me. Please could someone from Apple help me!!!

The steps you already took were the correct ones - reset, restore from backup, restore as new phone. You could always try them again, but a Restore with set up as new is the 'ulitmate' troubleshooter - if that doesn't correct the issue, it's usually time for a replacement phone. Unfortunately, you've learned a hard lesson there, although I don't see how Apple screwed you - it's no secret that the iPhone warranty is valid only in the country of original purchase (as a little research on your part would have shown).
See how much money you saved with your eBay purchase? Next time buy the phone from Apple or an authorized UK carrier.

  • My iphone 4S keeps crashing and restarting..hellllppppp?

I have a iPhone 4S and its been happening for about a week now. It decides to freeze, then the screen goes dark with little lines, then restarts with the apple logo. It usually does when I open camera based apps like snapchat and instagram..it does it on my camera too. But it also does it randomly like if I'm going to open a text from the lock screen, about to answer a phonecall...or just simply decides to do it when I'm not even using it! It's really getting annoying and I really can't afford for my phone to die. I really dont know whats up with it..

    Hello Tyeman,
I know crashing app can be frustrating. I have located an article that will walk you through a series of troubleshooting steps:
iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1702
    Symptoms
Learn what to do if you see one of these issues with an app you downloaded from the App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
    The app unexpectedly quits
    The app stops responding
    You can’t open the app
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • My iPhone 5 keeps crashing and freezing.

I restored it to factory settings and redownloaded the apps, etc. and it keeps happening. Battery life tanks really fast too. What do I do?

  • My iPhone 5s is crashing and rebooting on its own.

I have tried a hard reset (with no improvement) and have backed up my phone today in preparation for restoring the phone. My plan was to do a factory reset and then restore from my backup. However, I am wondering if I restore from my backup, whether it might restore the problem causing the crashes. I appreciate any help to make sure I'm on the right track!
    Thank you!

I was impatient and contacted Apple Support (love using Chat Support!) Their advice was to restore to factory settings for 24 hours and then if the problem didn't happen in those 24 hours, to restore my backup. This will let us know if it's hardware or something in the backup. So their answer combines both of yours.
    Thanks for your help!

Those models took 1066 MHz memory - but you have 1333Mhz...
I'd test with the original or other correct spec. memory - and/or test with Apple Hardware Test or other memory testing software - like Rember.

My iphone keeps crashing and turning itself off.....even though battery life is fine...as soon as i plug charger in it comes bcak on....help very frustrating...3g

absolutely that is frustrating. if the battery life is fine there could be two things software or hardware. to find out if your back up your information in itunes and import pictures and then restore the phone as NEW then you can test it out. if it is still shutting off it is hardware related

  • IPhone 3gs keeps crashing when using camera app and Facebook

My iPhone 3Gs is on its last legs, has been for a while, but I can't afford to upgrade just yet.
It keeps switching off, screen fades to black, when I use both the camera app and Facebook. I then have to reboot. It's not a battery issue, as it happens regardless of whether there's 90% or 9% battery life left, but just seems to happen randomly.
Today, it crashed when I pressed the shutter 'button' to take a photo, yesterday it was while I was selecting a focus point. Really frustrating, as I use the camera a lot. Facebook crashes the phone randomly, too.
This morning, I hung up on a call, then the phone died.
It's running ios5 now but has been doing it for a few months on previous versions of ios, too.
I've tried restoring to factory settings, but that has done nothing.
Any help you can give, much appreciated, thanks!

its not your phone bud im having the same problem to keeps crashing and i know its not that the phone is old unless you call 2days old as got it from apple store buch st glasgow on the 14th dec 2011 its an ios issue im sure as my last 1 updated to ios 5 and it wouldnt read sims no longer after speaking to apple they agreed to replace my handset as they are aware that the ios is frying some 3gs model mines was left a brick ie paper weight so if mines is crashing ect i cant even use the camera as it sticks then switches off apple need to sort this ios 5 out

  • Random iPhone crashes and reboot loop after iOS 7 upgrade

    Hi all
Since I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 7, I suffer from random crashes/resets, where my iPhone reboots and enters a reboot loop (Apple logo, black screen, reboot, Apple logo, black screen, reboot, etc) that I can only exit by restoring the device (resetting doesn't help).
    Some more information
    a) The device: iPhone 4, 32 GB, has never been jailbroken, and has never shown any similar issues before.
    b) The crashes/reboots: I haven't been able yet to find a pattern when and why they happen. I had reboots when searching for an app, when pluging in the wall charger, when entering the access code, and even when doing nothing at all (iPhone in my pocket). The only constant is the reboot loop after the crash.
    c) What I tried so far: I restored the device several times, using normal restore (with the iTunes logo) and DFU mode (black screen). After that, I recovered from a recent backup (takes some hours), and everything is ok again - for some hours, until the next crash and reboot loop. I also set up the device as a new phone, and there it seems stable, so I exclude a hardware issue. I tried quite a few of the advices that I found when googling for reboot loops: reset all settings (this led to an another immediate crash and reboot loop), disable app background refresh, etc.
I've been using this device for my daily business. With the current instability (and the couple of hours it takes to bring it back to life again), it became more or less useless. I wish I could downgrade again (I know that I can't). My assumption is that either iOS 7, or some incompatible app or some corrupt setting is causing this situation. But I don't know how to proceed to isolate and eliminate the issue. I really would like to avoid setting up everything from scratch again.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    All,
First of all, sorry for my half-finished post above. While typing, I was interrupted, and by reflex I hit CMD-S. Unfortunately, the stupid interface of Apple's support website interpreted that as a submit command. I tried to complete my text with the update function, but when finally hitting the submit button, I got an error message, and all my updated text was gone... No way to bring it back, and also no way to delete the half-baked posting. Quite frustrating.
Now, to complete what I started above:
In my case, the problem definitely had something to do with the springboard process (an iOS system 'app' that manages the iOS homescreens) and the watchdog process (another iOS system 'app' that monitors certain things on your phone and that can initiate a restart when it thinks the phone is frozen). In the folder '/Users/<your account>/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<your phone>' I could see what caused my crashes; they were all 'stack+SpringBoard' and the reason in these crash log files was 'Watchdog timeout'.
The following two forum posts helped me:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1676330?start=30&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20794982#20794982
I'm quite sure that my issues had to do with the 'application map' that is mentioned in the above posts. So far, Ive been thinking that it was just too large (as in the case of Andi1996 [second link above]), but jmbladen's observation seems not to support this. So, the absolute number might not the source of the problem, but I still assume that something went wrong with my application map during the upgrade from iOS6 to iOS7. I remember having stability problems before, as soon as all my 10 home screens were full of apps and newly downloaded apps would generate additional pages (only visible via iTunes). Considering that there are some fundamental changes to how we can organize apps within folders in iOS 7, it can well be that the springboard process just wasn't able to cope with my application map correctly within the 120 seconds before the watchdog process restarts the phone. My massive cleanup action must have fixed this somehow.
@jmbladen: I'm only using iCloud for the 'find my phone' functionality, so all the backup & recovery was done via iTunes from my local harddisk. And there was no temporal pattern for my crashes before. You might suffer from the same symptoms, but probably not because of the same cause.
My advice for anyone affected by random crashes and a reboot loop is to check out the directory with the CrashReporter logs mentioned above to find out what app or process causes the crash. If it's the springboard and watchdog problem, then you should try to clean up your home screens (from iTunes). Maybe the absolute number of apps is not that important, but make sure that you reduce the number of screens. And then sync and backup before you start using the phone again. In my case it helped.
Hope this helps someone else too.
P.S. Once you know the right keywords to search for, you find forum postings back to 2008 / iOS 2 describing exactly the same problem. This reboot loop is a very nasty issue, and it is hard to understand that Apple still hasn't been able to address this, or at least provide some better help on how to get out of it again.
