Iphone 4 keeps telling me it needs to be restored, but says my iPhone hasn't got a sim card installed when the same one is in there as always
my iPhone 4 said it needed to be restored, so i plugged it in but now it says there is no sim in the device, please insert one, so i thought my sim card was playing up and got a new one today, but turns out it still says the same thing..

You can try to restart the iPhone to exit recovery mode.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.

You cannot active a phone if it does not have a SIM card in it. Period. End of discussion.
If you get this error and it has a SIM card in the phone then either the SIM card is defective or the phone is defective. Get a new SIM card and try again. If the problem occurs with the new SIM card the phone needs to be repaired. -

Living in Canada with Rogers service provider.Its an IMEI issue. In my case, about a year ago, after originally purchasing my iP4 from AT&T store, I had a prox. sensor issue. Went to the Apple Store, they replaced the phone. Here is where it all stems from. The IMEI of the new phone was never updated in AT&T/Carriers systems. For iOS updates prior to iOS5, this was not an issue. My phone did its iOS updates along the way with no probs. However, when I updated to iOS5, the firmware did not match the IMEI with what AT&T/carrier had. When I went to Apple Store for the issue about 3 days ago and was given a new phone....again....the new phones IMEI was never updated with AT&T/carrier. I then again attempted the upgrade to iOS5 with the new phone and iOS5 bricked that one also. Today, at the store, we tried 3 replacements with same outcome.
So, after 4 hours and 3 replacement phones with Apple Store Tech (BTW totally gobsmacked), we solved the issue. Luckily, due to iPhone 4S launch, there was an AT&T guy there with a computer tied to the AT&T network to work along with us. The issue is......once the IMEI's on carrier account and phone do not match, iOS5 shuts down the sim card reader within phone.....forever. How to reverse this?......this is a question Apple needs to come up with, because with my case, they have 5 "bricked" phones.
What solved the issue was to get a new phone with iOS4.3.5, new SIM from carrier/AT&T, have carrier/AT&T (in their system) change/match the IMEI to the new phone and activate new SIM. Then, do iOS5 upgrade.
Simple and makes total sense..........however........there is an internal firmware (Apple Security??) issue that bricks the phone once IMEI's dont match.
I am now on iOS5.....no problems......so far. Good luck to all others. -

I was using iOS 7.0.1 an hour ago. Upon update to 7.0.2 I get "There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate."
I know I haven't a SIM. I threw it away. I moved on. New carrier - HTC phone. I've been using my iPone 4 as an iPod without the SIM for over half a year. Before that I did the same with my iPhone 3 for much longer.
What hoops do I have to jump through now to recover my iPhone 4?
The phone has never been jailbroken or altered.
ATT was my original sevrice provider while I bought my device from Apple.All iPhones require activation after a restoration and an iOS upgrade. There really was no reason to throw your deactivated SIM from AT&T away. You'll need an AT&T sim to activate that phone. It doesn't need to be active, however. Borrow one from someone to get your phone activated

I have been in contact with the girl i bought it from - a good sign i think. Anyway she is going into the mac store where she got it originally so hopefully something comes of that. I went into Rogers and they had SIM cards from every carrier (same error message) . I just find it strange that the phone doesn't give me any error messages alone except no service and itunes keeps saying the same thing

I upgraded my i phone 3gs from 4.1 to 6.1.6 then the above problem arisedI too am having this problem. All I want to do is use my iCloud backup of my phone to fix a bug in IOS 7 that loop-prompts me to connect to iTunes. Anyone that has an answer to to OP would be greatly appreciated. There have been almost 3000 views on this page and only 8 posts that aren't much help at all so far. Enough with this 'Do you know how to read' white-space. I'm here for answers!!!
However, I suppose I already have the answer. This is simply another example of Apple using their software to limit consumers of certain demographics (namely, people who have the phone but don't pay for service from a carrier). A SIM card is only required for activation because the software administrator says so; and for no other reason. The hardware is there and its perfectly functional otherwise. I shouldn't even need to activate in the first place. Just restore my freaking phone!! -

There is a hardware fault but this is confined to the internal sim card receivers and purely the parts related to the sim card there are no other hardware faults! I've tried dfu mode and a restore and cant find anything related to this anywhere on the internet, thanks for any help in advance, Bobby
iPhones require a SIM card, that card does not need to be active.

Sounds like your phone was hacked to use with your carrier. Updating it has relocked the phone to it's original carrier. You will not get the phone working again without a SIM from the original carrier.

Thanks for asking, I knew I had forgotten to mention something. The phone was indeed unofficially unlocked, since there were no apple stores or even premium resellers in the region I lived in during the given procedure had to be done.
I understand this could be a further complication, especially the fact the home button does not work. However, I was wondering if there would be a possibility to use a third-party application instead of iTunes to restore the iPhone? IF someone does know of such an application, I could easily solve further problems myself. Basically, the main issue here is my lack of ability to enter DFU mode. -

It sounds a lot like your phone was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it prior to your trying to update it.
If that is the case, it is nowpermanently bricked. -

The iPhone 3G is Not Compatible with iOS 6...
It also appears that your phone may have been Hacked and / or Jailbroken...
If this is the case... you are out of luck... Because...

Was the phone unlocked offically by the carrier before restoring? If it was unlocked by a hack it will be locked again after a restore or update.

trying to active my old iPhone 3gs. it showing that activation server is temporary unavailable and on the iTunes showing that there is no sim card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate. Was the SIM card activated on another phone? I assume this is an ATT style trying to use on T-Mobile? Was the SIM installed correctly? Is the carrier (like T-Mobile) operating IOS 6 devices yet?
If the SIM is a valid SIM from say T-Mobile, you may want to contact them for assistance activating the SIM card.
Activation and SIM issues typically point to the carrier. And if this was a CDMA phone say working with verizon, it will NOT work for ATT or T-Mobile as they use different electronics on the 3GS. The SIM slot is for international use only.
