IPhone 4 lost contacts only (not recents or sms, etc)

Hello,
So I've recently joined the dataphone community with an iPhone 4. I have been enjoying the phone and learning more about how it works every day, but this weekend, something happened and I'm not sure how, when, or why, and I was wondering if anyone could help me. I only fully realized what happened when my wife called me and it didn't show her name, just her number. Then I checked, and I only had one contact, which I had added the day before. I had noticed that it didn't show any contacts the day before, but I thought I must not have been looking at it right or something, and didn't think anything of it.
Here are the details:
It seems that only my contacts have been cleared, nothing else. My Recent calls, favorites, etc. all retain their numbers, but the contacts database is empty, so there are no names associated with them. The only other thing I saw that was reset were some of my Mail settings (namely default account).
Other than that, nothing seems to have changed. It may have been as early as 3 days ago, to as late as yesterday. Not sure when exactly.
From other threads I've read, it may have to do with syncing, but here I am confused, because I have not done any syncing or updating of the OS or anything. Maybe I updated an app, but I've done that many times without any issues. In fact, I have been intending to learn about syncing, but have not done so yet, thinking that that was only necessary for infrequent, catastrophic problems. I did read something about it automatically syncing with the computer whenever you plug it in to charge? I've done that several times, but never had any issues until now. I also don't use iTunes. In fact, it isn't even installed on our PC, which is what I use most of the time. I have not plugged it into our mac (which does have a version of iTunes on it) recently. It is possible that I plugged it into the computer in the last 3 days, but I don't recall having done so. I've been charging it via the wall jack.
Also, I do not have an "Import from SIM" option in my Settings for "Mail, Contacts, Calendar", which I have heard is supposed to fix the problem. Nor do I have a MobileMe account.
This has totally caught me off-guard, and I'd like any feedback. What could have happened in the absence of a sync or update? Was it automatically updated, and automatically set to delete my contacts without warning? I am using iOS 4.2.6
Thanks for any and all help you can provide in demystifying this for me.

  • "My Contacts Only" not working With SMS

    Hi, there.
I would like to know if the "My Contacts Only" block in [Settings > Notification Center > Message] works only with iMessages or if it includes SMS also.
I'm from Brazil and here we get a lot of spam messages via SMS.
Even though I got this setting turned on, I still get a sound alert every time a SMS spam message hits my inbox.
And blocking the caller is no good, since the messages always come from different numbers.
I have an iPhone 4 under iOS 7.0.6.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

My young kids have ipads and since I updated the software, but they have their own icloud account, predictive text within their messages shows all my contacts from my iphone but the contacts are not listed as their contacts, how do I stop this?

I have deleted the iCloud account under my name on their iPads and replaced with their ones. Apple support said yesterday I needed to click the small 'I' by each name as it came up in the TO box and remove it. After doing rid for each contact under each letter of the alphabet it should remove them from latest contacts. Having done this, although I could not remove groups I had sent, I am not convinced they will not return once I have written a few texts, any ideas?

  • I updated my iphone and lost all my notes there is lots of important notes, how can i get em back especially that on itunes when i sync my iphone a note appear that there is no back up on icloud, and i cannot restore?

i updated my iphone and lost all my notes there is lots of important notes, how can i get em back especially that on itunes when i sync my iphone a note appear that there is no back up on icloud, and i cannot restore?

Without a backup on iCloud, there needs to be another device using the same @icloud address that is syncing to the notes.  Without that, there is no way to go back in time to create a backup before performing a major update.

The person that found them has deleted them on the phone so you iCal is gone is what I can figure.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Please try the following…
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

  • Is there an app for monitoring CELLPHONE usage? (Not data, calls, SMS, etc.)

Hey! Is there an app for monitoring CELLPHONE usage? (Not data, calls, SMS, etc.). I know there's for data, but I wanna know if there's one that keeps track of calls, SMS, etc.
    Thanks!

Unless O2 has an app available via the iTunes app store that provides for this as AT&T does for the iPhone sold in the U.S., I don't believe so.
The iPhone includes a usage indicator for Call Time and Cellular Network Data usage, which can be reset on a monthly basis based on your billing cycle, but there is no usage indicator for the number of messages sent or received.

  • Updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 and lost contacts and notes

So yesterday I find that my iPhone asks me to update to iOS 6 to which I say yes. Tells me if I want to do a backup to iCloud. I say yes again. It updates normally and at the end of the backup process it tells me iCloud does not have enough space for the backup. Oh ok, too bad. I'll do something about it later, now I need to use my iPhone. Turns out most of my phone contacts and my notes disappeared. So... hmmmmm... I didn't complete the backup to iCloud but it deleted my contacts and notes all the same. VERY DISAPPOINTED at Apple. Any suggestions?

I first bought an iPhone 3 years ago. The sales pitch was "up to 5GB all of your pictures, contacts, and Notes" will be saved on the Cloud". So over a year ago I lost my iPhone and bought a new 4S, and guess what? All of my Notes and pictures were restored. Now here we are in February 2013. I had accessed my Notes just this past weekend. Today my iPhone tells me I need to update my IOS to 6.1 so like a blind Apple sheep, I did so. Guess what? My Notes are GONE! I call AT&T where I have Apple support, and they have no idea what the 6.1 change did to the old instructions. Apparently there is a NEW "create an iCloud email" setting but I have no idea if that is going to bring back my Notes. I have to make an appointment and something on the Apple site says if I need help it will cost me $19. Wait, I already pay AT&T and they cannot solve the issue because of the new 6.1. Something fishy here and I am not happy about it. Where did my Notes go? My phone is not broken, but it looks like by updating the phone to 6.1 wiped out my Notes from my phone!!!

  • IPhone 4s lost contacts & won't restore

I Recently lost all my contacts on my 4s & have tried 5 times to restore it but it continues to lock up.
Last night I was able to retrieve some thru a partial restore ( locked up again so I rebooted the iPhone)
to to find most contacts. Then not 5 mins later they where gone again just by hitting any key. I've tried
sync again with no luck. Also tried icloud backup but no luck & it only has some of my contacts which
doesnt make much sense. I also removed the SIM card & put it back in.
I tried turning off/on contacts button that Didn't work either. Can anyone help or is this just a complete
    loss! Thx 4 reading

You can try iPhone Data Recovery. You are provided three ways to restore contacts on iPhone, which are recovering them directly on iPhone, from an iPhone backup, and from iCloud backup files. What you have to do is very simple.
Step 1.Install iPhone Data Recovery and connect your iPhone to your computer.
Step 2. Choose a suitable mode to continue
You can choose "Recover from iOS Device", "Recover Deleted contacts from iTunes" or "Restore Contacts from iCloud". You can choose a favorable mode to continue the progress.
Step 3. Click "Scan" your iPhone
Step 4. Preview the contacts and recover deleted them from iPhone
I believe you can retrieve your lost contacts.

  • Help, New iphone. Lost contacts!

Hi I would really appriciate some help. My Iphone 4 was broken, so before I took it to the apple store to get a new one I backed up my data and updates my phone on my girlfriends macbook pro. She also has an Iphone 4, which she regualarly updates. When I went to the apple store they replaced my Iphone 4. so when I went to set it up on my girlfriends macbook pro it was only allowing her to set the iphone up to restore from her iphone, and not my own. so we decided to set it up as a new phone instead. but now this means I have lost all my contacts, photos etc. Nothing was really important apart from my contacts. Does any1 know a way I can get them back. My girlfriend has already searched alot of forum sites to check where the back up is stored and my original back up from my first iphone is no where to be seen. Please Help!

Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. This can be with the Address Book on your Mac and is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
Were you syncing contacts with the Address Book on your Mac with your old iPhone and if not, why not?
You can't selectively choose which data included with your iPhone's backup is transferred to a new iPhone, or restored on your iPhone when restoring the iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. It is all or none.
If all contact info that was available on your old iPhone was not included with the iPhone's backup that was transferred to your new iPhone and you weren't syncing contacts with a supported application on your computer via the iTunes sync process, the contacts may be lost.
If your old iPhone is still available along with the contact info, sync your old iPhone with the Address Book on your Mac, which is selected under the Info tab for the iPhone sync preferences. Follow this by selecting the same under the Info tab for your new iPhone sync preferences followed by a sync.

  • New iphone 4 outlook contact updates not syncing to phone since i downloaded icloud

Just purchased my first iphone after only using Androids or Blackberry, from Verizon.  At the store they helped me set up itunes on my laptop to sync my Outlook Contacts and Calendar to the phone.
It seemed to be working fine until I was offered the opportunity to download iCloud. Now the calendar entries on my computer still transfer to the phone but the contacts are not transferring. When I went back to Verizon to ask...they suddenly have amnesia and told me to contact Apple.
In settings under iCloud I have Mail, Contacts, Calendars all set to "On". I can't see anything else that should be on.
    Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem with one of my apps. I'm just going to wait it out and I feel fairly confident that this issue will clear itself up in time on its own. If not, I'm just going to delete the app...the app is I Say Free so no big whoop.

  • I have only loaded phone contacts in my new iPhone 5 and my email contacts only on my Macbook Pro with retina display contacts how can I keep them from changing my iPhone to email contacts only when I connect to iTunes please

Since purchasing a new iPhone 5 and macbook pro with retina display I have decided to keep the iPhone 5 for phone contacts only, and the macbook for email contacts only .. Is there a way for me to keep these as they are recorded on each apple product when I sync with iTunes as it has changed my iPhone and put in email contacts and thus deleted iPhone phone contacts once when I syncd thanks appreciate any help

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

  • Iphone 4s lost contacts

    12.29.13
My IPhone 4S with v 5.1 lost all contacts without any version updates or app downloads and I was reading the forums with increasing anxienty.
I have not done any updates at all or Icloud backups sine 10/11!
So I called the apple number and they said it would cost me $19 since I had no plan.
$19 is nothings for 2 years of contacts so I said yes.
A few mintues later a tech from Texas (Erik!) got on the phone and proceeded to troubleshoot with me and there was no charge.
As it turned out - I use gmail and I received a suspicious login message so I changed by password for my gmail account.
But I did not change it on the phone till Erik walked me through it.
As soon as I did - contact appeared in full.
Also - he said the easiest way to back up your contacts was to connect to wifi everynight when the phone is recharged - easy enough.
I am going to go ahead and buy Apple stock - they did a fine job - even though the issue was admittingly easy to solve.
So I'm  sharing this info - and hope it helps someone similarly "fearing the worst" to call up and have a easy solution too!

  • Updated iPhone 4S; lost all my NOTES

Updated iPhone 4S late September 2014; lost all my NOTES (because not using iCloud??).  Don't want to use iCloud.  They are not on my iMac either (so much for re-establishing the bak-up function!).  Help.

I am trying to help out my son. It is his phone, he has never backed up to anything that he knows of.  I know he has a gmail email account on the phone but he cannot remember ever syncing the phone to a computer.  If he needs to use Itunes he uses his wifes account.  I have called Gadget Grave and Phone Doctor trying to find out if there is a way to find his contacts.  He did not have Icloud on it was off and has always been off.  I have since turned it on and created him a account. The contacts he is replacing like 4 out of over 100 so far is in the cloud I logged in and checked.  Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.  I bought a online program Tenor I think it was that said it could recover the contacts but could not even get the Registration to work on it so I have ask for a refund.
