IPhone 4: lost contacts!  Restore from Backup only works for 30 seconds after restore job, then contacts disappear!

The last time I backed my phone up, my contacts disappeard.  So I went back in and "restored from backup."   When the restore job finished, I opened up my "recent calls" and the names of my recent callers appeared for about 30 seconds and then they turned back into phone numbers.  No contacts appear in my contact list.
I called apple-care and all they're interested in is trying to get me to give them money.
I tried free support from this website but the person on the other end was clueless...utterly clueless....did not even understand what I meant when I uttered the phrase "restore from backup."  I had to take him through the process I had just gone through step by painstaking step, and all he could do was ask me why I didn't have my contacts.
Is there anyone here whocan help with this?
PLEASE...help me.

Wjosten,
You are absolutely correct, they are very much apart of the backup.  I lost all my contacts and did the same thing as you, restored a previous backup.  Upon completion of the restore, all my contacts were there.  Like you, after 30 seconds, mine too erased.  I tried to mess with iCloud with no luck, after re-establishing connection with either wi-fi or cellular, my contacts erased.
I tried several times and was able to finally get my contacts copied over from the restore, here is how but only works if you have the restore available with the contacts still present.
1. Restore from the previous backup (you must watch your phone because you have to be ready for the next step)
2. When your phone restarts, immediately place your phone in "airplane mode" to stop it from connecting to the cloud and wiping away your contacts.  (Your contacts will remain until airplane mode is turned off)
3. Within iTunes, search for and download "My Contacts Backup" which is FREE and does not need to connect to the Internet to work.
4. Within iTunes, under the iPhone, navigate to the App's tab and find "My Contacts Backup" and click the install button to have it installed onto your phone.
5. After installed, run the "My Contacts Backup" and follow the prompts.  Do not change any settings, they are already properly set up.  After it copies all the contacts, it is ready to e-mail out.  Email them to an address you can get on your phone.
6. Turn off airplane mode (this will delete the contacts as said above but we have a backup.)
7. Open the e-mail and click on the attachment.  Follow the short steps and all your contacts will re-populate.
If you are like me, this fix also took care of my iMac and iPad contacts.  I have all 400 contacts back.  I hope this helps if you haven't found a fix or anyone that finds this page in the future.  While trying to fix this, I stumbled across software that was over $100.00 to fix this problem.  This is the free way
FYI - I had the iPhone 5 running 6.0.2
Good luck,
Reed

My 3gs wont restore after ios 5 update. I have tried firmware restore and restore from backup, neither works. All I get is "iphone restore failed because backup session failed" Any ideas on how to make a successful restore with this ios 5 update?

I was having the same problem, I backed up my phone and then updated to iOS 5 and then it kept telling me it could not restore from my backup as it had failed.  After reading a bunch of forums and posts and trying everything, I did manage to get it to work.  I had tried the Time zone, creating a new computer user account, disabling anti-virus, etc.
It took a combination of things, one of which was disabling the anti-virus completely and copying the contents of the backup folder to my desktop and then deleting everything in the backup folder.  Then I rebooted the PC, entirely disabled the anti-virus, copied the one backup I wanted to restore from the desktop to the backup folder and then trying to restore.  Low and behold the phone said restoring from backup and I am back in business, so when in doubt, trying combining some of the fixes together.

    - Go here and see if you can redownload the movies. If you can then delete the movie and redownlod it.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Otherwise, contact iTunes and explain your problem. They should allow a free redownload.

  • Safari and firefox stop working after a few minutes of browsing, regardless of what site I'm on. I have to restart my computer to get internet access again but it only works for a few more minutes, then I have to restart again. Please help!

Safari and firefox stop working after a few minutes of browsing, regardless of what site I'm on. I have to restart my computer to get internet access again but it only works for a few more minutes, then I have to restart again. I don't get a spinning ball, it just stops working at whatever page it's on. I can close the program just fine but when I re-open it, either safari or firefox, it freezes trying to load the hompage. This started a few days ago after trying to stream a movie on my computer. I'm on a Mac Air OS X Version 10.6.8 and have downloaded all updates. When I go into finder, it says I have over 80 gigs available. Is there some other memory cache that I need to check? Thanks so much for your help.

It's not a router problem as I explained in my post. If it was a router problem then I wouldn't have the problem everywhere I go. It is an issue with the software.
Then I guess the millions of people running 10.5.7 with no issues are just hallucinating that their machines are working fine?
I'm not trying to belittle your issues; you're certainly having them and I know first hand how annoying an intermittent AirPort issue can be. (In fact, mine was due to an AirPort driver bug that no one else seemed to suffer from.)
The single best diagnostic you could do is take your system running 10.5.7 to an Apple Store, and try using their in-store network.
If your machine performs flawlessly, it may be a router issue.
If your machine has connectivity issues there, it may be a hardware problem with your machine.
There have been numerous people in multiple threads over the years who swore that an update was buggy because things used to work, but returned later to sheepishly admit that they took their machine in, a problem was found and fixed, and now their Mac works flawlessly with the newer software.
But simply reinstalling 10.5.5 in no way means the explanation of how firmware bugs may be at play here is incorrect.
In the context of that explanation, all you've done is possibly reinstall software that asks to add "2 + 3."

  • Macbook pro wont start unless I restore from backup (only a temporary fix)

    Hi,
I have a mid 2009 Macbook pro (2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8GB Ram, moutain lion) that randomly freezes when i try to log in after sleeping. When I log in, the pin wheel shows up and my computer doesn't go beyond log in. I manually turn off the computer and after turning my computer on it leads to a grey screen (apple sign and spinning wheel). At this point the computer stays at a grey screen without ever getting to the log in screen.
The only fix I found is to restore from my latest backup (in Recovery Mode) but this only solves the problem for about a month . After about a month I run into the same problem outlined above.
I need help identifying the underlying problem. Is it a hardware or software problem?
I ocassionally hear a clicking noise from what I assume is my harddrive (HHD). Disk Utility sometimes helps get beyond the log in screen but the computer quickly freezes after I get to the desktop.

    MyKnee,
if you have access to a FireWire 800 cable and a second Mac with a FireWire 800 port, you can try booting your Mac into Target Disk mode to see if it can be treated as an external hard drive from the second Mac. If so, you can try copying your personal files to the second Mac.
Alternatively, if you have an external disk enclosure or a SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FireWire adapter, you can try removing your internal disk to see if you can boot from it externally. If it’s repairable through Disk Utility externally but non-repairable internally, then that might point to your internal SATA cable as being faulty.
If you’re unwilling or unable to either fix your problem yourself, back up your own files, or have someone else do so for you, then yes, you’d be SOL. This is where the value is found in making backups — to avoid SOL scenarios like this.

  • After iOS 8 upgrade restore from backup not working

    Hi,
yesterday I've upgraded to iOS8. After three tries it worked.
But now I'm not able to restore my iPhone5 from Backup. It starts restoring. But the when it's done I've receive the error message without an error nr.
"itunes could not restore the iphone because an error occurred"
    Thats it
I've rewetted the iphone, tried on another computer to restore the backup, tried a different internet connection. Nothing. Everywhere the same issue. I've also tried to use a half year old backup just for fun. But the same issue.
I've disconnected other USB devices. No chance
Does anybody has a useful idea?
    Thanks.

  • I can't seem to get restore from backup to work

I lost an entire feature film project in FCPX 10.1.2. Gulp.
I was trying to export to Blu Ray, then tried to just export the Blu Ray file to hard drive, i.e., I gave it 2 commands at almost the same time. My fault, but then FCPX started acting funny, so I forced quit and restarted FCPX.
When I rebooted, I discovered that the feature project is gone, but everything else is there... (the trailer and all the other project files, just the one project -- the big, most important one -- is not there).
So I tried to restore the library from the backup that was made an hour earlier. When I select it and then ask for the backup I get a spinning beach ball, but I am not sure if that is FCPX working away or is this FCPX just not able to do anything? Should I force quit again? I have a backup on another hard drive from the previous day, should I just go to that???
This library that I am trying to restore is a fairly big file, 1 TB, could that be what is taking a while? How long should I leave the beach ball spinning before giving up on it?  Thanks.

Hi Russ, I did wind up using the backup file from FCPX.  It took quite a while for it to relink everything, hours (for some reason it took forever to find files that were .caf that I used from the FCPX effects, not sure why).  The only thing that is strange is that all the underwater shots that I had in the film are listed as "incompatible."  Something about the audio has to be the same as the way it was in the original file.  I didn't use any of the underwater audio for the obvious reasons (diver breathing, etc).  Anyway...
I ran out of time today (at work now), but later tonight I will try this:  at the same time I have open the version of the film with the unlinked "incompatible" underwater files, I will open a slightly older version of the film from the library from another hard drive where I have those underwater scenes already done the way I want them, then just copy/paste them into the newer version film that has the unlinked "incompatible" files.    Will this work?
As always, thanks for your help Russ.

  • "Fix" From Community Only Works for 24 Hours :(

I am very aware of all the Q & A regarding the fact shortcuts entered by the user quit working after upgrading to iOS6.
I have already tried the "fix" of deleting my shortcuts and restarting the phone.
It works for about a day and then they quit AGAIN.
    HELP!!
    Thanks in advance.

    What's that? Shortcuts?

  • I just got a MacBook Pro 10.8.2.  but facebook only works for about 3 minutes and then stops loading.

My computer is completely new with nothing on it at all.  It was bought in the USA but i am living and using the computer in Israel, i dont know if that matters.  every other website that i have gone on works just fine, facebook is the only one that stops loading after a few minutes.  Please help.  I dont know computers well at all and dont know the "computer language"  so please if someone could help me and explain to me very simply what i need to do to fix the problem.
    THank you so much!

Try going to Starbucks and connect thru their WiFi and see if you experience same issue. If not, it may be your wireless router not compatible to wireless-N built in the macbook pro. It could be your router cycling on and off its connection without even noticing it.  Do you have any other wifi at home that doesn't experience this issue?
You need to do process of elimination. Keep us posted. Thanks!

  • Spell Checking only works for English after 10.4.9

After installing and reinstalling (combo version) of 10.4.9 on my Intel MacBook Pro, the Spell Checking is working only for the English language.
Seems that other languages are not installed (although they are at the spelling pop up). When I activate them, nothing works. No spelling as I type, no suggestions at the spelling window...
Any one know how to reinstall only the languages?

    Nothing?

I recently moved to Australia and received a new iphone with a local AUS number. I have a backup of my US iphone in the icloud. Question: when I activate my new AUS iphone which option should I choose - new phone or restore from backup?  I would like to have all my contacts, email, etc. however wasn't sure that option was appropriate since it is a different/new number and a new phone.

Yes, as new iPhone then restore from backup.

  • No Camera App after restore from backup on iphone 4

OK so I backedup my iphone 3g which was on 312 on itunes 9.2 before my iphone 4 arrived today. I restored from backup and all of my apps restored. I can't seem to find the camera app! It's driving me crazy that I am trying restore the iphone 4 as a new phone but downloading the iOS4 firmware for iphone 4 is taking more than 3 hours for some reason.
    Has anyone seen this?

Why not? If old data is recovered by restoring, then new data after last back up lose. If keep new data after last back up remain, lost old data can't be regained, even may be user's lack of knowledge, iPhone should not be for the people of one class...I am really sad for all who suffer the lost of their hearts (valuable data that can never be recalled) like me. How can I continue to use idevices?????

  • HT4137 i have purchase another family ipad do I restore from backup or setup as a new ipad

I have purchased another family iPad.  When I setup do I restore from the backup of our other iPad or set the new one up as a new iPad?

if you want all your apps and data on the new iPad from your old one, choose Restore from update. If don't want to and don't apps and your data on it, choose setup as new iPad.
If you choose Restore from backup:
You will be asked to restore backup from iCloud or from your iTunes library.
If you choose to restore it from iTunes library, connect it to your computer and open iTunes. Right click your iPad icon on devices lost and choose Restore. Choose the back up you want To restore it, and it should be restoring.
If you choose iCloud, you will be asked to sign in your iCloud account. Choose the backup you want, and it should be restoring.

  • Lost my contacts list and try to restore from backup and it ask for my password to unlock my iphone backup. I don't remember creating a password for it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Lost my contacts list and try to restore from backup and it ask for my password to unlock my iphone backup. I don't remember creating a password for it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

If you encrypted the backup, there is no way around it. You will need to configure your iPhone as a new device.
    From iTunes: About iOS backups:
In the iTunes Summary screen, select "Encrypt iPhone backup" if you want to encrypt the information stored on your computer when iTunes makes a backup. Encrypted backups are indicated by a padlock icon, and a password is required to restore the information to iPhone. You may want to write down the password for your backup and store it in a safe place. If you use a Mac, when you set a password you can select to store the password in the keychain. With iOS 4 and later, you can transfer the iOS keychain backup to a new device if you encrypt the backup.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.

In the simplest sense, archiving a file means making a copy that you never change and never discard. You already know how to do that.
iPhoto has built-in archival features, in the sense that it saves all versions of an image that you've modified. As long as you have adequate backups, you don't necessarily have any reason to archive an iPhoto library. If you want to delete images from the working library but still have access to them in case you change your mind, then you do need to archive those images. I don't have a specific suggestion as to how you should do that. You might post a question in the iPhoto forum.
