Iphone 4 no sound at all during calls

I recently purchased an iPhone 4. I found that everything was working great, apps worked sound worked and music etc. I was very happy with my purchase until i made my first phone call. Whenever i recieve or make a phone call there is no sound apart from a faint crackling at all. The person on the other end can not hear me ether. It doesn't work when the headphones are in or when it is on load speaker also, which is making me believe it is a software issue, not a hardware issue? I have read that when making calls the phone uses seperate speakers, but surely this wouldn't affect headphones and loud speaker as well?
I have restored many times on 5.0.1 with no luck, rebooted, reset settings and nothing seems to work. There is no way i can downgrade to see if it is software issue :/
I can't take it to apple because the warrenty has ran out.
If anyone can offer any help it would be greatly appreciated!!

Seems like your choices are to either restore as new (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137) or have the Apple Store evaluate it to see if it's a hardware issue first.  If you choose to restore as new be sure to save any Camera Roll photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) and backup your contacts, either in a supported client (Outlook 2003/2007/2010, Mac Address Book, etc) or using an app like My Contacts Backup, before wiping your phone since these are not included in your iTunes library.  Good luck!

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • IPhone 4 Mic & Speaker not Working during Call

    Hello All,
I have iphone 4 and it was locked on at&t and was running ios 5.0.1, now i have unlocked my iphone and now i am using ios 5.1.1. But i have a problem, when i call someone i cant hear anything "no dial tone sound and no sound during call" & speaker mode is also not working and nor the person cant hear my voice. I also tested on my another phone but same problem.....
So can you tell me is this a hardware problem or software problem ?? and yeah i can record voice memos and i can listen my memos with speaker on and off
    Waiting for reply....

Do the basic troubleshooting steps described in the User Guide:
    1.  Reset iPhone (no data loss): Press both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.
    2.  Restore in iTunes using a backup
    3.  Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup.
If restoring as new doesn't help, there is a hardware failure.

  • On my iPhone 4 the sound is all scratchy when listening through earbuds or dock.  Its any sound, music, utube videos.  If I play it through the iPhone speaker or from bluetooth it sounds fine.  It just started about 3 weeks ago.  Any suggestions?

In the last three weeks my iPhone 4 (OS 5.1.1) the sound became all scratchy when listening through the ear buds of if I dock it.  The sound is fine listening to it from the iPhone speakers or in my car through bluetooth.  Please remember its all sound.  Whether its music, utube or a phone call.  Any suggestions?

Mini Man, I'm glad to read you found a solution to your issue, but I don't know if your solution is going to be mine as well.
For starters, I do not have the new Apple TV - at least, not yet. I have ordered one, but it will not be delivered until some time next week (sneering glance at Steve & Co. for abandoning that platform rather than making it AirPlay compatible).
But that is not really my issue: my issue is that my two Airport Express units do NOT show up in the iPhone, though the DO show up on my iPad. This tells me they have been properly configured (both units have names, and are connected to the house network), so there must still be something missing from the equation.
And, judging from the response of a few others who have chimed in here, I think it's save to say that the experience is not altogether uncommon.
I'm surprised nobody has come back with a more direct solution to the common issue. I may have to call AppleCare someday this week...

  • Sometimes on my iphone 5 i can't hear during calling how can i fix that thanks

sometimes on my iphone i can't hear during call !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i get my new iphone 5 about 1month ago
    need solution

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray BEFORE doing the reset.

  • Instaling Iphone in car sound system to answer calls

Is it possible to install the iPhone with the sound system of the car, to be able to answer phone calls? Is this complicated?

Yes, it is possible. Like the above poster mentioned, though, it depends on the Bluetooth of your car, and if it's compatible with the iPhone.
I personally have had my iPhone 3G connected via bluetooth with my car, but it was a mediocre experience. Perhaps you will have better results.
As for the complexity of pairing your phone, it depends more on your car's system. Consult your car's user manual for guiding you through the bluetooth pairing process.

  • My iPhone 5 crackles and pops loudly during calls (with and without speaker phone.)  I'm experiencing this same same issue on my third iPhone.  Is this a common problem?  Short of getting the phone replaced (yet again!) is there a solution?

My iPhone 5 frequently crackles and pops loudly during calls (while using speaker phone, as well as not using speaker phone.)  After being inspected by techs at the Genius Bar, my phone has been replaced twice; thus, I am currently on my third iPhone 5.  Incredibly, I am, yet again, experiencing the exact same issue. Short of getting my fourth iPhone, is anyone aware of a solution?

if it's the exact same issue, either it's a problem with your service or with your software if you're restoring from a backup each time. it's pretty darn near impossible for 3 phones to have the same exact hardware issue, so that's unlikely. is this an at&t iphone? if so, are you continuing to use the same sim card? if so, get a new one and try that out. if that's not the issue, restore the phone as new and make a few phone calls. if the issue's gone away, there's something wrong with your backup

  • Skype sound cuts / drops during call.

I've been having this problem for some time now, and I assumed it was due to problems on behalf of my ISP, but recently I tried troubleshooting it and came to the conclusion that it must be something on my end.
On skype, me and some friends have a group we use to chat with eachother and host group calls while we play, or just to chat. Lately, I've been having some issues where the sound cuts off ( they can't hear me and I can't hear them ) and all I hear is static noise. Rarely, the call even drops on my end, and I hear the redial tone. This happens with different "call hosts" within the group. Not sure if that's the correct term, but i'm refering to whoever clicks the "make call" button first, and if he quits, the call drops for everyone.
I've tested joining the same call with another laptop, also using wi-fi, in the same room, and the call was stable. The only difference was that it was a Macbook, while I'm using a windows laptop.
Speedtest.net game me an acceptable result. I tried pinging google trough command line to see if my connection had spikes, but nothing out of the ordinary showed up. Skype is updated, and I scanned for both virus and mal/adware using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes' Antimalware, respectively. After some search on the forums, I tried disabling "Use port 80 and 443 for additional incoming connections", and "Enable uPnP" on Skype's connection settings. Other than that, my firewall is the default Windows Firewall, and everything on windows is up to date. Another thing I saw mentioned was that having Hamachi could cause some problems, but I don't have it installed anymore. I do have teamviewer though, but I only start the program when needed. I also checked the call technical info, but it's hard to see the fields because these cuts usually last about 5 seconds. However I noticed that during a cut, some changes happen:
-Packet loss appears to stay at 0% sometimes, while other times the numbers change.-Roundtrip goes up sometimes, and other times it doesn't-NBM audio goes down gradually to 1000
-SessionIn appears to change to Direct_TCP for some soments
-Problems show "SEND_GAP" and "RECV_GAP" I don't really know what to do anymore to try and fix this, so any help would be appreciated.
    Additonal info:
    Windows 7
    Antivirus: MSE
    Firewall: Windows
    Skype ver. 7.6.0.103
I managed to get a couple of screenshots of the call technical info. The two on the left show how it's like during cuts, and the one on the right is when it's working normally. I may also add that these cuts happen every 5 minutes or so.
#edit :  The drops were seeming kinda regular, so I tried starting a stopwatch on my phone, and I was right. It drops every 2 minutes. This is really weird.

For the longest time I did not run windows updates (+/- 1 year). Last night I ran windows updates and now my Skype is cutting out every few minutes. It is driving me nuts. I have a feeling that it is an update from Windows that has messed up the works.

  • IPhone 3G doesn't wake up during call/sms

    hello everybody
my iPhone doesn't ring and doesn't wake up when call or sms are incoming, still sleeping.
After awaking it immediatelly shows missing calls or receives sms.
But it still online, if i call on my iPhone from another phones i hear calls, like mi mobile receives that but nobody answer.
I resetted iPhone, restored on 2.1 firmware and set it as new device - didn't help.
    Have you any advices?
    Thanks

The last few days my screen would go black when I got a call. No way to answer it. So I reinstalled 2.2 yesterday. Hopefully that will solve the problem. I must say this is one flakey phone. Was still getting dropped calls by the tons. Great computer, terrible phone. I saw in the NY Post some guy was suing Apple because of all his lost calls. I must say I don't blame him. I had a Verizon phone before this and never got dropped calls. I actually had AT&T many years ago, maybe 10 and the service was just as bad then. Frankly it seems even worse now.

  • IPhone 4 no sound at all?

Recently my iPhone 4 stopped sending or recieving sound. I had the speakers and microphone replaced and this fixed the problem for about 2 days. I've tried restarting it, I've tried restoring it, I'm out of ideas. When I restore the phone it will work perfectly for about 5 minutes then go back to having no sound. I know the components are good because when it works for those 5 minutes it works without flaw so could I just have a serious software bug or? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot!

Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro has no sound at all. Called Apple and they said to reinstall OS X.

I have recently discovered that my MacBook Pro has no sound except for the startup chime. I called Apple and they told me to reinstall OS X because something went wrong in the OS. Is there any other way to fix this?

That's a really overly simplistic answer to your problem. Re-installing OS X doesn't always fix every problem. Yes, it might in your case, but it might not. Are you still under warranty? Either way, I'd take it into your local Apple Store and show them the problem and let them fix it. If the system has to be installed anew, so be it. But rule out other problems first.
Before you do anything, make sure that you have a back-up of your data, applications, etc. If you don't already have a back-up scheme, get an external hard drive and use Time Machine to back up your computer. Then take it into the Apple Store.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • IPhone not automatically turning off screen during calls...

ok, getting sick of this b.s. and i have tried the settings and whatever else i can find... NOTHING WORKS!
WHY!!!  why when i make calls does it not turn the screen off so that i don't unintentionally mute people or accidentally put them on speaker??!  w-t-f apple???
also, sometimes when it actually does fade out, it stays feded out... and i have to hit buttons or the screen to wake it back up?!??!  w-t-h apple?!?!
anyone else having this problem?  i tried to search the forum and can't find anything on it...
    thanks

The iPhone 4's proximity sensor is just above the earpiece speaker as shown here:
If your Otterbox is covering the sensor, it won't work.  Otterbox makes cases for the iPhone 3/3GS and iPhone 4.  The sensors are located in different places, so a case for the 3/3GS won't work for a 4.
Take your case off and see if you still have the problem.  You may have a bad sensor and need to make an appointment to have an Apple Retail Store Genius look at your phone. http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
