Iphone 4 not recognized on any computer

I've had my iPhone 4 for about 5 months now and it's always shown up on my computer just fine, but the other day it randomly started showing up that the device wasn't recognized when I plugged it in to put music on it. At first I thought it was my computer so I did all the stuff that forums said to do but my sister's ipod is recognized just fine on my laptop, and my phone isn't recognized on our desktop computer either. So I know it's a problem with my phone. I've read that I'm supposed to just restore it to factory settings but I really don't want all my pictures and contacts wiped out, but since my computer won't even recognize it I don't know how I'm supposed to back those things up. Help!?

you can back up with iCloud: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
also: have you tried connecting with another cable? Because if you have and still no go, the issue is defenitely at the iPhone and it might need repair.

Good luck

  • Why is my Ipod not recognized on any computer?

My 4th gen. IPOD, itself a replacement under warranty after my original died, cannot be recognized on ANY computer - in Itunes, My Computer, Design Mgr, etc. It's not under warranty. What can I do? None of the IPOOD rescue attempts (5 in number) work without the IPOD being recognized. Please help.

  • Ipod shuffle is not recognized by any computer or itunes

I have a first gen. ipod shuffle. It does not show up in Windows or Itunes on two different computers. The original problem was that it would not skip to the next song. I was going to reset or restore it, but I can't because neither computer (dell) that i own recognizes the shuffle. Help anyone?

I have downloaded that utility but can not use it, as
when I plug the shuffle into the USB port, it is not
recognized by either computer I am using. I can not
reset or restore, because in order to do that the
computer would have to know the shuffle is plugged in
and it doesnt. I have tried this on two different
computers and get the same result, so I dont think
its a computer issue, its an ipod issue. I also used
to be albe to play the shuffle on the Xbox 360 and
    now can not.
Just as a check, did you actually follow the THESE directions...EXACTLY?
    Using iPod shuffle Reset Utility
    1. Quit all running applications on your computer.
    2. Open the iPod shuffle Reset Utility.
    3. Connect iPod shuffle to a USB port on your computer. Do not connect iPod shuffle to a USB port on your keyboard or other non-powered USB hub.
    4. Click the Restore button. If prompted, enter an Admin user name and password.
    5. The restore process will start.
    6. When it is complete, quit iPod shuffle Reset Utility and open iTunes to sync music to your iPod shuffle.

  • IPhone 2g. Failed restore. Now is not recognized by any computer.

Hello. I have the 1st generation iPhone. The other day I was restoring it, to transfer it to my sister. It came unconnected during restore. I've dealt with botched restores before, you're just supposed to get it into recovery mode and restore... Just one problem now... I can't get any computer to recognize it. I have 3 computers and 4 connection cords.
Computer #1: Dell with XP SP2. Has USB 2.0
    Computer #2: HP/Compaq laptop. Vista 64-Bit.Also 2.0
Computer #3: Thick Mac that came with OS X Leopard
I have 2 Thin, no press connection cords and 2 thick, squeeze-to-disconnect, cords.
The iPhone will go into DFU and Recovery mode.
I have tried every port on every computer with every cable. I have tried it in Recovery mode , and DFU mode. Both windows computers just say "USB device not recognized" and "Unknown Device". The mac doesn't do anything. iTunes does not recognize on any of them. I have absolutely NO idea of if I can fix this. It also seems to be out of warranty. What can i do?

This is really pathetic Apple. Sad and pathetic. I call my local Apple store, they say call national help. I call national, spend an hour on hold, and finally get some person in India. I tell them everything
I've done and they walk me through it again. Finally after another hour, the tell me they can't fix it and to check here. I post here and noone replys. I go to the genius bar. They can connect it to a mac, they say, "It's a 2g, out of warranty, buy a new one". It didn't fall on the floor, the cord came out of the computer. and now it doesn't work. This is total BS. Unless some magical pixie helps me, and apologizes for all this, I'm boycotting Mac and Apple for the rest of me entirety, and I'm going to burn my i-Phone 2g in effigy. Then, I'll go buy a WORKING and SUPPORTED smartphone with a WINDOWS OS! They actually work!!!!

  • 1GB 1st Generation iPod Nano USB Device Not Recognized on any computer

I just recently received a free 1st generation 1GB iPod nano from a friend because they couldn't get it to work. I figured I'd take a crack at it and hopefully get a working, free iPod out of the deal...
It already had music loaded on it (mostly a bunch of garbage), so like anyone else in my position I proceeded to reformat the little sucker and wipe its slate clean.
Here is what happens when I try to connect the nano to ANY computer:
Here is how the nano shows up in device manager:
This was the original problem I was having with my desktop PC which is running Windows XP Home with SP2 and all the latest Windows updates. It is running iTunes 7.5.0.20, w/ latest iPod updater software version 1.2.3.
Prior to testing the 1st gen. 1GB iPod nano, I had been charging and syncing my 5th generation 60GB iPod classic on my desktop PC using the same exact cable. All of my USB ports are in working, functional condition and order. I even have “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” unchecked under USB Root Hub Properties.
I tried a couple different USB ports and I used another cable, no luck. So I moved on to my Fujitsu laptop running Windows Media Center Edition, all latest Windows updates, same version of iTunes and iPod software (the difference being that I DO NOT sync any iPods to it, nor do I have any music on it). SAME EXACT PROBLEM, same message bubble, same entry in device manager, and same lack of driver availability.
Thinking maybe it’s just a “PeeCee” thing I dug out my old PowerBook G4 running the ancient Mac OS 10.2. Keep in mind this thing only has a 400 MHz G4 processor, 512MB RAM, 30GB hardrive, and USB 1.1 ports. The iPod nano wouldn’t even give a hint that it existed when I plugged it in.
I have tried every single little Apple trick available. I’ve done the forced restart while connected and while not connected to the computer. I’ve done forced disk mode while connected and while not. I’ve run iTunes diagnostic tests on connected devices. I’ve messed with USB port settings. I’ve tried two different USB 2.0 iPod cables. I tested my dad’s 8GB 2nd generation iPod nano to see if it linked up with my desktop and my laptop IT DOES. I even tried my 60GB 5th gen iPod classic OVER AGAIN to see if it still worked, IT DOES.
Also, this 1st gen iPod nano will not charge when hooked to the computer through USB. When I plug it in, between the time it’s plugged in and when the “USB device recognized” bubble pops up the battery icon shows it is charging, but as soon as that bubble pops up it disappears and discontinues pretending to charge.
On my Fujitsu laptop, I uninstalled everything having to do with Apple. I uninstalled iTunes, Apple Software Update, everything. Restarting after it all of course. Then I installed the old iPod Software Updater from 6-28-2006. I was pretty sure this wouldn’t work because the iPod isn’t even recognized by the computer. In order for the iPod to work in the iPod Software Updater or iTunes it has to first be recognized at the basic Windows level. Which it isn’t…
I have done research all across the net and the only real answer I found was that the iPod Nano’s internal USB controller is dead. I’m 99% sure it has nothing to do with my laptop, desktop, USB cables, software, or drivers. What do you guys think?

Nope I have not figured anything out since I posted this. The closest answer I've found is that it's the internal USB controller which has gone bad. If that's the case than there is really nothing more I can do.
I did find one opening and that was the diagnostic screen. You get to it by holding down the Menu and Center buttons, as soon as the iPod resets hold down the Left and Center buttons, the iPod will beep and then it will go to a diagnostic screen. Maybe somewhere in there you can find the problem I don't know how to use it though.

  • Ipod touch not recognized on any computer

i have just updated my ipod touch from 1.1.2 to 1.1.4 and now it is not recognized by itunes. i have tried multiple ports on both my mac and pc.
itunes will auto-start, and my ipod charges, but does not show in itunes or finder.
i went to my console messages and i recieve:

    and

7/12/08 9:33:02 PM [0x0-0x29029].com.apple.iTunes[393] MobileDevice: AMDeviceCopyValue: There was an error getting the value from lockdown
i have restarted everything and reinstalled itunes, but nothing is working. any suggestions?

Follow the directions on this page. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
It will put your iPod into recovery mode and should make it visible to Itunes.
Then you can restore it again and hopefully for the last time.

  • IPod Nano Not Recognized by any Computer

Hi. I found an iPod Nano about a month ago. And I plugged it in to my computer and nothing, the only thing it does is it Starts to charge for about 5 seconds...then immediately stops...What I don't understand is that my iPod Shuffle works perfectly, I plug it in, then iTunes pops up. But I have tried this iPod Nano on about 5 different computers, with iTunes and nothing. I have a Windows Vista, with iTunes ver. 8.0.1 the newest. Can anyone help please?

I'm not sure if it charged when I hooked it up to my roommate's computer, but it definately didn't register either. If I put it on the dock it plays so the port is fine, but that still doesn't help me sync it to my computer.

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes any more

    iTunes 9.0.2 on a 2006 iMac 2GHz intel duo running OSX 10.5.8
    iPhone 3Gs 32 gig
    iPod (5th gen)
3 external hard drives, all the iTunes library stored on a Mybook 1 TB Firewire drive plugged into iMac direct, not via a Firewire hub.
I plugged my iPhone into the Mac this am, tried to sync the iPhone and got an error message saying that something was wrong with my iTunes.
    Mac then froze.
Finally got the Mac back up after five attempts (eventually, had to unplug everything, including the mains to the iMac, plug in just the power, keyboard and mouse, press and hold power switch for 5 secs then plug in each extra drive when the Mac came back up).
Found something seriously wrong with iTunes as it wouldn't open when clicked on (Force Quit reported app frozen).
Deleted iTunes using AppZap then downloaded iTunes from Apple website.
iTunes now back up on iMac but can't find any of the music files (even when I carefully repoint the iTunes to the correct location for the iTunes library by iTunes/Preferences/Advanced then Change iTunes Media Folder Location). Each entry in the iTunes library now has a black exclamation mark against it,
Also, iTunes doesn't see my iPhone when I plug it in.
Also, when I plug in my iPod, get the error message "The iPod is synced with anotehr iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
    HELP!
By the way, I have TIME MACHINE running to a separate and dedicated HD. Can I not just "roll back" my iMac in the same way I could do with a PC, say selecting the iMac when it was last working fine (yesterday evening)??
Keeping fingers crossed and hoping for an answer....
    Chris

Rather than create another "iPhone not recognized by iTunes" thread, I'll add to this one. I have an iPhone 3G 8GB.
After going through those steps you listed, my Windows XP installation always reverts back to the old Windows Apple iPhone drivers which only sees it as a camera. I've had it set to only pull from the iTunes drivers by specifying "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" in the Hardware Update Wizard. Windows still doesn't like the iTunes drivers stating "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware". This location is the same as you noted: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers" which contains:
    usbaapl.cat
    usbaapl.inf
    usbaapl.sys
    All dated 7/22/2008.
My current drivers for the iPhone in my setup are still the MS drivers, version 5.1.2600.0.
    usbscan.sys
    ptpusb.dll
    ptpusd.dll
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have a 20gb IPOD 2nd generation which has worked fine until recent itunes and tiger software upgrade. Now Finder nor utilities (ipod updater) nor itunes will recognize the ipod when connected with firewire-- even in disc mode. Ipod is not recognized by any MAC computer (several tried in Apple store). I ran diagnostics and everything checks out on the ipod. Please help.

  • IPhone not recognized by computer or itunes.

    Hey everyone!
I troubleshooted my way trying to fix this problem but it's still not going away! I was sleeping and I woke up to find that my phone was syncing to itunes anymore. It didn't fall from a table or something, it just ceased to sync. When I plug it I can charge it, but it isn't showing on my computer. I tried using another computer (a pc this time) and still to no result. On the pc I finished all the steps till I reached 3rd party issues, I knew this doesn't apply to me because its not working on any computer i use. I think it's a hardware issue, Am i right in this assumption?
