Yes, after restoring the iOS4-Software i had a clean iPhone 4 with "Utilities" and the Compass-App in it... But after restoring the Backup with all other Apps - the Compass-App disappears... Crazy...
So i will try to clean my iPhone "as a new Phone" and do a new sync... Hope this helps...

I have a mac osx version 10.9.2. I used to have the student version of creative cloud cs6 earlier this year. I cancelled my subscription several months ago and bought cs5 two weeks ago. I never had any problems with the cloud. I went through the entire download process for CS5, and they all showed up in my applications folder and appeared to have downloaded but every time I try to open them they bounce around next to the application manager icon and then disappear.

Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit.

Hello world... (Mac world that is)
The message says more "Logout has timed out because the application Mail failed to quit. To try again, quit Mail and choose Log Out from the Apple menu."
I tried everything. Still does not let me shut down.
Other programs will not shut down at this time, including Finder. I also know that the Time Machine icon has been spinning for over an hour. So I imagine we are in a loop of sorts.
Unfortunately, I have had similar troubles before that I did not record. So I figure I start now and see if somebody out there can help me.

I'm having the same problem (can't logout, shut down or restart), but the referenced solution doesn't seem to apply. I do not get a "Cannot connect to server" message, I just get a "Logout has timed out" message. It seemed to happen after an automatic software update that was supposed to involve a restart, but it hasn't been able to restart since.
Can you please clarify, what is meant by "delete the AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary, which is located under the root node" (with reference to file loginwindow.plist)?

I was at the genius bar earlier, and they said I need to 'archive and install' in order to 'reset the OS'... but there's got to be a better answer than that, no? Perhaps this plist thing? I'm surprised that even powering off the imac doesn't reset anything... it just comes back the way it was. I'm supposed to bring the 25 inch imac in to the mac store for surgery (archive and install), but seeing several similar cases on this discussion forum, without archive and install identified as the clear solution, I'm in search of a second opinion... or any suggestion for how to simply make this work the way it was before? Is it 10.5.4 that is causing this? Should I go back to 10.5.3?

That's normal and as designed. The song will play out. You can pause it by pressing one of the volume buttons or use an app like 'Stop the Music' to completely exit the player.

2d Direct draw, and how to find out if the application is a java apps

I am running a banner application that was written in java. And in some instances, we are seeing the banner flicker every 5 seconds or 10 seconds. The banner application is written by some other government branch and on their documentation they say that the flickering is due to java's 2D directdraw used by some other java application (not their banner application). I personally haven't seen this on our test VMs but it is being seen on some physical workstation at the client site.
I am trying to find out the application that is using java's 2D directdraw in our environment. Some of the question I have is
1) Is there anyway to find out what application is using java 2D directdraw? ( I know how to disabled it globally for java but don't want to do that, I would rather just disable it for one application than disabling it on all java application)
2) Is there anyway to find out what applications are depended in JVM on a machine? So that I can narrow the list of application to test.
3) Is there anyway to find out if a application is written in java. Our environments have a lot of applications installed on them and I'm not sure which one use JVM and which one don't. If there is a way to know that then I can narrow down my issue and try to solve it.

if the database is running, start a sqlplus session. You will see in the banner something like '64Bit Production' (for 64-bit) or only 'Production' for 32-bit. Alternatively, especially if the database is not running, go to $ORACLE_HOME/bin and type 'file oracle'. The returning strings shows either 32-bit or 64-bit.

Can I buy an Unlocked iPhone 5 from Apple when it is released and use it out of the box as a wifi device without needing unlock codes and sim cards? I do not plan on getting phone service right away and would like for the device to be functional (basically like a real expensive iPod) until i'm ready to get service.

Meg is correct, unless you activate it using a microSIM if it is a GSM phone (and starting service with a CDMA phone) you will not be able to do anything with your new phone except call 911.
Why not just wait and buy it when you can afford service?

It will ask you if you want to set it up as a new iPhone or backup from an old iPhone. If you backup from the old iPhone you **might** loose the apps/data that you have downloaded from the point on that you got the new iPhone. You can always redownload the apps from the store.

Can't move an application out of the applications folder to a different location?

I had a couple of applications in the applications folder that I thought would be better suited on the desktop, but evertime I tried dragging the application to the desktop (or any other location on my Mac for that matter) it only seemed to create a shortcut, eventually I resorted to moving the application to the trash and then from the trash to the desktop, but this seems a bit cumbersome, isn't there a better way to do it? In the future should I settle for just creating a shortcut?

But they were originally placed on the desktop when I first installed them, then manually put in the applications folder myself.

i am from Turkey. on 8th january 2015 i have ordered 2 iPhone 6 from the apple store online. and make shipped them to my friend who was living in US. few days ago she returned to Turkey and give me the phones. but in one of the boxes the iPhone 6 was different than the one i ordered. both iPhones that i ordered were 64 GB. but i have received one 64 GB space gray and one 16 GB gold iPhone 6. now i don't understand how such a thing happens with a worldwide company like Apple. before i go and open a case in the court i want Apple to solve my problem as soon as possible and change my iPhone 6 with the one i have purchased throughout the Apple store in Turkey İstanbul. or if you would say that i have to ship it to the US than Apple must pay the shipping bill. or apple pay me back the difference between 64 gb and 16 gb which is 100 dollars. so i am waiting you to contact me as soon as possible about the solution of this stupid mistake. Sorry, but you are not addressing Apple here, we are all users in these forums, just like you.
If you buy an iPhone from another country, the warranty and service can only be handled in the country where it has been bought. Since Apple does not sip internationally, you'll have to bring the iPhone back in person or send it to someone who can do that for you in the USA.
