IPhone 4 reception IS better then 3GS

My wife & I are in Wisconsin. Her 3GS says no service. My iPhone 4 has 1 bar and I'm sending and receiving texts. I love my iPhone 4 and would never go back. It does everything better then the previous iPhones. The the display is just awesome.

@CK6Speed
Agreed. However, I think it is important that those of us who are not having issues do not want to take away from anyone who is truly having a problem with their iP4. As we have seen, there is a difference between people who are having problems with their iPhone, and those who don't own an iPhone but want to muddy the water and kick up sand. I feel sorry for them since they are clearly trying to poke people in the ribs for nothing more than their own amusement. We had a name for them in grammar school--bullies.
Today, my wife and I went to downtown Los Angeles for some good Mexican food, we took our iPhone 4s with us and had excellent 3G signal all over the place (esp. at Olvera St.). I did try to "death grip" my iPhone to see if I ever once lost signal and I didn't. I dropped 1-3 bars, sometimes the bars even came back up. I think anyone who gets an iPhone 4 will inevitably try the death grip just for their own curiosity but it isn't anything to truly worry about--I've not had any problems making calls, even in LA! In fact, I would argue that the calls seem clearer and more crisp than they did on my old iPhone 3G or Nokia 2320 (backup phone). The noise canceling was very obvious when talking to family and they said I was crystal clear on the other end. Again, this is in LA--probably one of the most congested areas in the USA. No dropped calls either, very impressed.
AT&T might not be perfect but I'm not having any problems with them at the moment. Maybe some are and would like to complain, fine, but don't call people who are having not problems "fanboys" or "apologists."

    Hi
I just wonderd does the iPhone 4 have a better DAC (digital to analog converter) than the 3gs?
    Thanks

The 3GS and the 4 has the same GPU Power VR 535 Gx and almost the same CPU ARM Cortex A8 and A4(modified Cortex A8) so im guessing the DAC is the same to keep compatibility close...

  • IPhone 3G Reception Problems? You're Not Alone

I have the same problem with 3G coverage. I am suppose to be in a strong 3G coverage area at home. I only have 1 bar. Traveling around town (Sacramento area) my 3G coverage changes dramatically. From 1 bar to full bars? Not sure if its working properly or not??? Anyhow, this was posted on Engadget. After they exchanged their iPhone the problem went away? Could it be true? Is it the netork or our iPhones? Lets all hope nothing is wrong with our iPhones!!!!
iPhone 3G Reception Problems? You're Not Alone
One of the more disturbing things coming out of the iPhone 3G launch is reports of suspiciously poor 3G reception and speeds. Specifically, I've seen several people report one bar - specifically, one bar - of 3G reception in areas where other devices report strong reception. (More complaints at Engadget.)
This may be a problem with a batch of iPhones, or with something in AT&T's network, though I've also seen someone reporting the problem on O2 in the UK. The first review iPhone we got had this problem - it would mysteriously drop from four bars of 3G to one for no apparent reason, while our Motorola RAZR2 V9 reported better reception. Then it would shoot back up to four bars for no apparent reason a few minutes later. That unit would also occasionally throw up an "invalid SIM" error, requiring a reboot. That phone also had hideously slow 3G data speeds in the 50 kbps-150 kbps range, so the missing bars weren't just a display issue; there was something wrong with the way the phone was hitting the network.
We exchanged that iPhone for a different unit and no longer had the problem. We took the new iPhone and carried it around comparing it to a Motorola V9, and the two phones connected roughly the same number of calls on the 3G network. The new unit also had much higher data speeds in the same locations - still not great, in the 300-400 kbps range, but at least reflecting 3G.

my white iphone does the same thing. I will drop down to one bar on 3g but full strength when i turn 3g off. Some people have tried to say that it is because 3g had more difficulty going through walls. Mine will not switch between 3g and edge on it's own so i find that when at home i just have to turn off the 3g. I have also heard rumors of a bad batch of iphones. I tried to take it into the store today but they were so busy i just had to make an appointment for thursday, although i was able to replicate the problem in front of the apple geek, which was a little surprising becuase while in line outside the store i had full bars of 3g. It might just be an issue that occurs when indoors? I also have a problem with lag. I'm hoping to get it resolved thurdays, whether they give me a new phone or just tell me to eff off and deal with it. probably the latter.

  • My IPhone 3G reception fixed, a new problem - AT&T *real* data speeds

I've read quite a few topics on this forum regarding the poor IPhone 3G reception, and unfortunately 99% of them are emotions, making it very laborious to distill useful info out of them.
Therefore I'd like to post my personal experience so far with IPhone 3g, listing more facts, than emotions. *I hope this will help some of you, and also hope that others will follow a more structured approach to reporting IPhone 3g problems*.
    *IPhone 3G Model MB046LL, 2.0.1 firmware*
I got my IPhone 3g black 16gb version in NJ on August 2nd, model MB046LL. I work in IT, and I was overall very impressed with all of its features. However, the device had 2 major problems - 3g reception was highly unstable, and the actual 3g data speeds were far lower than advertised, 200kb on average for download and 30kb on average for upload.
I called AT&T, they said I was in the zone with "the best 3g coverage". I went to an AT&T store, and had my SIM card swapped from #3022 to a newer one, #4022. Swapping the SIM card drastically improved both 3g reception and the data speeds.
Unfortunately, I noticed that my IPhone 3g was picking up not as many bars of 3g as other Iphone 3g sitting next to me. The actual dbm numbers for 3g were also smaller. I would continue having dropped calls. I also noticed that my battery would fully recharge very fast (within 1.3 hours), and would fully discharge much faster than it was advertised. The GPS was acting weird, and the voice quality would sometimes be horrible even with 5 bars of 3g. There were more anomalies with that phone, e.g. download speed of 20-30kb with 5 bars of 3g, among other things. I would diligently take screenshots of every anomaly I saw, and store them on the phone. Restoring the phone to its factory state did not help.
After some time, I concluded there was still something wrong my IPhone, scheduled a Genius Bar appointment, and had it replaced with a brand new IPhone 3g. Having numerous screenshots of different problems minimized the explanations to a minimum.
    *IPhone 3G Model MB048LL, 2.0.1 firmware*
I had a chance to compare the new model with the previous one I had - the build felt a bit different. The screen on this new model has a slightly better contrast, too (compared default factory settings).
*The new model, however, has GREAT 3g reception*. Where with the previous model I had 2-3 bars of 3g, I now have 5 bars. The dbm numbers are also somewhat improved. I had a couple of small issues with apps, etc., but I figured them out - found which apps were crashing the system, and deleted them, cleaned up the old backups and the crash diagnostic crash reports from the previous model, etc. Finally all other problems I was having with the previous model are now gone, too, except the quirkiness of the GPS, but I suspect it's the new firmware, and not much I can do about it. I have yet to see a dropped call on this new model.
However this new model identified a new problem, something that I'd suspected for some time: it appears that the problems people are having could indeed be the combination of IPhone hardware/software and AT&T network.
I noticed the data speeds vary significantly throughout the day, even when you sit at the same desk. I noticed the speed drops significantly approximately during lunch time to ~90-300kb for download, would be ok during the day (~200-350kb for download), and would be AWESOME after 10pm - ~0.9 - 1.4Mbs.
One can make a conclusion here that AT&T simply does not have enough network capacity to handle the peak data load, when many people connect on the network. It could be that IPhone's software does not manage very well under such conditions, but I'd would place more blame on AT&T in this case, considering how exceptionally well IPhone performs during other times.
I'd like to point out that although both Apple and AT&T reps were genuinely trying to be helpful, I could clearly see that not one person I talked to on both sides did not have a clear solution how to resolve the problems I was having. Basically, I had to figure out what the problem could be, and use the resources available to try to solve it - be that replacing the phone, restoring from backups, monitoring the crash logs for problematic apps, etc.

I would constructively suggest that you edit your post pretty quickly if you want to avoid a highly deserved, verbal battering from every unemotional, highly rational and intelligent poster on this forum who might take offence to your demeaning attitude. I think to assume that because people who have posted on here have posted at all because they are emotional basket-cases, or in some way out of control of their emotions merely because they have aired their disappointment/disgust/anger with their sub-functioning iPhones is pretty insulting and undeserved. Whatever YOU have written here, or have experienced elsewhere, still only has the value of 1 (ONE). It is a poll of 1. It is an opinion of 1. No more valid than that, no more authority than that.

    Hello, Greg et al:
I figured out the problem and got the project working (sort of): the app did not like 'resetKeywordList()' in 'localeList_changeHandler', so I set the keywordList in the two 'getKWs_[locale]ResultHandlers' directly (result of the calls to my CFC).
That fixed the issue, but not completely: if I change language while the KeywordSelect ComboBox (on the right) selected item is not 'ALL' the cartoon AC does not refresh correctly. For now, I am getting around this by disabling the language change ComboBox (on the left) when anything other than ALL is selected. This is not so bad, until I figure out what the problem is.
If anyone wants to look, you can access the Main page of the app from here, http://www.timos.com/timos/green/greenPlanet.cfm, by pressing the CounterThink logo at the bottom. The new page, not linked to from my site yet, is   http://www.timos.com/timos/green/ct/CounterThinkNEW.cfm (just insert NEW before the .cfm extension).
I know my code could be a lot better and intend to keep working on it, so I would love and really appreciate comments/suggestions that anyone wants to provide.
    Regards and ciao for now.

    harder to explain

    bad sign.
Hmm.. Well, maybe it's time to explain what I meant by 'I'm
    working on it'.
I sure am not adobe, or mm, but I'd bet that most of the
    regular list
members care about Director more than anyone at any company.
A couple years back, shortly after mus got discontinued to be
    more precise,
and by not finding any descent networking Xtra, I started
    building one. The
initial goal was to build a socket Xtra that could transfer
    binary strings.
But soon as I got the hang of it, I started adding all the
    stuff of my
personal Director wish list that came to mind. And the Xtra
    evolved beyond
and initial expectation - and timeline for that matter.
The 'official' announcement talked about unicode. But that
    was just the
    first object revealed.
The Xtra includes objects (strings, lists, date, image...)
    that are both
faster and more flexible than their Director's equivalents,
    well as new
objects that aim to include all that windows/c++ has to offer
    for their
    field (socket, services, file/shell...).
It has been a long and mostly lonely journey...
    You can visit
    http://xtrema.rtr.gr/cDown/
    to get an idea.
Now that the core is finished, all experimental objects are
    updated and
added to the pack. The idea is, soon as certain base objects
    are completed,
to produce some freeware apps for advanced tasks (like
    managing services),
in an attempt to give Director back it's good name. I guess
    that at the
time, I'll make a call to any director developer that wishes
    to participate
in such a project to lend a hand (gui / suggestions etc).
Don't forget: If it can be done with c++, it can be done must
    faster, and
with far less debugging, in Director. Long as you can call
    c++ routines that
will give you access to the system functions that is (aka
    Xtras).
As a pro app builder, I find Director to have just one
    drawback. No
multithreading support for lingo scripts. Any number of
    threads can work on
the background (like e.g. getNetText), but there will be
    bottlenecking when
it comes to callbacks. So, building a director based
    enterprise server is
out of the question. But building a game or mid-business
    server capable of
    hosting thousands of clients isn't.
    Regards,
    Harris.

how can i fix my iphone its already ios 7 then now need activation required

Were you, by chance, running a beta version of iOS 7 on your phone?
If so, this will be the problem. You will need to log Into the private developers forum athttps://developer.apple.com/support/ios/
If you are not a developer, you will need to seek help by way of your favourite search site.

  • XCode freezes when opening project after installing iPhone SDK 3.2 beta

I have problem opening up existing XCode projects, and creating new XCode projects.
If I open an existing XCode project, no window appears and XCode becomes non-responsive.
If I create a new XCode project, it shows me the window to create new project, but after entering the project name, XCode becomes non-responsive.
I've played around with the settings and found out that if I go to
Preferences>Code Sense and untick the Indexing>'Enable for all projects'
The problem is solved. But with that turn, I no longer have auto-completion.
I have tried a few methods to solve this but none was working
    1) I thought the problem was due to documentation. In Preferences>Documentation, I see "Mac OS X 10.6 Core Library" and "iPhone OS 3.2 Library" showing "Getting..." all the time. I compared the file sizes of the docsets to my laptop (no problem with XCode) and there's a big difference in file size. So I copied these files from my laptop to the Mac with problem. This does not solve the problem.
    2) Clear cache .
    3) Disable indexing. Quit XCode. Start XCode and enable indexing. Then quit XCode and start project.
    4) Uninstall XCode completely with sudo /Developer/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=all , and then reinstall iphonesdk_3.0__snow_leopard_final. I verifed that I was able to open projects normally. Then I installed iphonesdk_3.1_with_xcode_3.2_final__snow_leopard_10a432, followed by
    iphonesdk_3.2_beta_with_xcode3.2.2. Problem comes back
    5) I tried to clear the files below but it does not help
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Xcode.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Xcode
    ~/Library/Caches/xcodebuild
    ~/Library/Application Support/Developer/Shared/Xcode/
Anyone able to point me to a solution? Thanks

Hello honcheng & welcome to discussions.
I'd recommend doing a custom install during the iPhone OS 3.2 beta installation instead, and putting it into a separate location from the release tools...
I would also suggest participating in the beta forums as well.

  • IPhone 3G reception versus iPhone 1G reception

I just purchased the new iPhone and got rid of my 1G iPhone. My experience so far is that the signal I'm getting is weaker. For example, at my desk at work, I get practically no signal from the 3G, where I got a great signal from the 1G. Also, when driving, I have far more dropped calls and the service seems to disappear temporarily more frequently. Is this a problem with my specific phone? Do I need to take it in to the Apple Store. Help anyone? Thanks!

A: iPhone 3G reception versus iPhone 1G reception

Ah, this is where the finger-pointing begins between AT&T and APPLE I'd say.
While I never owned the 1G as you refer to it, I do own the 3G for 3-days and have noticed 3-4 dropped calls in my local area, whereas I never had the issue while on Verizon for 5-yrs now. So while that doesn't answer your question... I would assume APPLE will tell you nothing has technically changed internally between the 1G and 3G other than the 3G having a plastic back cover... therefore, the reception from either phone should be the same and that it is an AT&T issue. On the flip side, AT&T will say that nothing has changed with their 3G technology (ask in person so you can watch them evolve into Pinochio); therefore, if there were no reported problems with the 1G, then it has to be something about APPLES "3G iPhone's" technology and not AT&T's 3G network. While both have some merit in their argument... we do know that the 3G network may not work as well in buildings, etc. and that it's "available" bandwidth with the significance of more 3G iPhones being in use has to cause a drain on it.. which is why they are having to add more 3G towers... remember IT 101? The analogy of bandwidth with a highway? So, if in 2000 you had a four-lane highway capable of handling "x" amount of traffic during rush hour with no issues and in 2008 that same highway is now experiencing 10-fold in additional traffic volume... guess what? So as APPLE was caught by surprise by the increase in volume demand and sales of the new 3G, so was AT&T in being able to ramp their systems and servers to accommodate the increased traffic. There are system performance tools out there that proactively manage the performance of heterogeneous and multi-vendor networks, thereby, pinpointing areas of potential and actual performance degradation before they happen, generating reports in advance in id'g problematic areas of concern prior to systems failing. These systems also provide flexible and scalable thresholds to accommodate s... [Show more]

How can I sync Iphone to a PC calendar then have multiple users share that calendar? Is there an application that does that?

If it is actually an exchange calendar, and it's not linked to a specific user, it should be possible to simply add the exchange account to each device in question and have that exchange account only sync the calendar.  Then every user has access to the same calendar and can add/edit entries to the calendar as needed.
The same would apply if it were a Google calendar added via Exchange.
If the calendar is not actually on Exchange, but rather added from an outside source, it will depend on that outside source where the calendar originates.

After upgrade to iphone OS 4.0 (and then 4.1) synchronization of calendar, contacts, bookmarks of safari STOP working. For example I check checkbox "synchronize calendar" and press "apply". Then iTunes DELETE check in the checkbox ("synchronize calendar") and start synchronization of all other info but not calendar. The same situation with contacts, bookmarks, Mail.
How is this problem resolved? Thanks in advance.

It's OK--no worries! Mail accounts sync differently (I'm a MobileMe user) so knowing the mail account type is important.
First, repair your permissions. You can do this by opening the Disk Utility (Applications to Utilities to Disk Utility), selecting your hard drive and then clicking "Repair Permissions."
Than, rest the iPhone by holding down the "Home" and "Power" buttons through the home screen until the apple appears. Then let it come back to your home screen.
OK, second, I looked up the iOS 4 Manual. Double check your phone settings. Under the "Setting" button, select "Mail, Contacts and Calendars." Select the accounts on your phone and make sure the syncing for the items you want to sync is turned on.
I know you've done this, but try it step by step in case something was left out:
    From the manual . . .
    Set up iTunes syncing:
1 Connect iPhone to your computer, and open iTunes.
2 In iTunes, select iPhone in the sidebar.
3 Configure the sync settings in each of the settings panes.
See the following section for descriptions of the panes.
4 Click Apply in the lower-right corner of the screen.
By default, “Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected” is selected.
    iPhone Settings Panes in iTunes
The following sections provide an overview of each of the iPhone settings panes.
For more information, open iTunes and choose Help > iTunes Help.

Select “Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected” to have iTunes open and sync iPhone automatically whenever you connect it to your computer. Deselect this option if you want to sync only by clicking the Sync button in iTunes. For more information, see “Automatic iTunes Syncing” on page 58.
Select “Sync only checked songs and videos” if you want iTunes to skip unchecked items in your iTunes library when syncing.

The Info pane lets you configure the sync settings for your contacts, calendars, email accounts, and web browser.
    Contacts
Sync contacts with applications such as Mac OS X Address Book, Yahoo! Address Book, and Google Contacts on a Mac, or with Yahoo! Address Book, Google Contacts, Windows Address Book (Outlook Express), Windows Contacts (Vista and Windows 7), or Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 on a PC. (On a Mac, you can sync contacts with multiple applications. On a PC, you can sync contacts with one application at a time.)
If you sync with Yahoo! Address Book, you only need to click Configure to enter your new login information when you change your Yahoo! ID or password after you’ve set up syncing.
    Calendars
Sync calendars from applications such as iCal on a Mac, or from Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 on a PC. (On a Mac, you can sync calendars with multiple applications. On a PC, you can sync calendars with only one application at a time.)
    Mail Accounts
Sync email account settings from Mail on a Mac, and from Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 or Outlook Express on a PC. Account settings are transferred only from your computer to iPhone. Changes you make to an email account on iPhone don’t affect the account on your computer.
Note: The password for your Yahoo! email account isn’t saved on your computer, so it can’t be synced and must be entered on iPhone. In Settings, choose “Mail, Contacts, Calendars,” tap your Yahoo! account, and enter the password.
    Web Browser
You can sync bookmarks on iPhone with Safari on a Mac, or with Safari or Microsoft Internet Explorer on a PC.
    Notes
Sync notes in the Notes application on iPhone with notes in Mail on a Mac or with Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 on a PC.
    Advanced
These options let you replace the information on iPhone with the information on your computer during the next sync.
When you plugged the iPhone into the new macbook (figuring you had the iPhone first and then got the macbook), you should have received a message saying that your iPhone was currently syncing to another itunes library and do you want to sync it to this one. Did you get that message and did you click "yes?"
Hang in there, you'll get it. My two gmail accounts are syncing OK. I don't use google calendar or sync contacts to those accounts.

Define "I cannot transfer songs."  What exactly did you do, and what exactly happened?
Did you authorized iTunes on your computer and sign into the same iTunes account as your phone (and the one the music was purchased under)?

  • I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then to iMovie9.  Footage in iMovie is stretched.  Is there a way to fix that?

I transferred video from iPhone (4S) to iPhoto and then dropped that footage into iMovie9.  The footage is there in iMovie but it is stretched.  I have tried to adjust using aspect ratio options but that doesn't work.  Is there a way to fix that in iMovie (or at any other point in the process)?

It shouldn't be this way.  Did you shoot the video in portrait or landscape mode?  Many people shoot in portrait mode because they typically hold the phone upright.  This is really shouldn't happen if the videos are shot in landscape mode.
