IPhone 4 replaced battery 100% charged, but shuts down unless plugged into wall charger

Hi everyone,
I've had my iPhone 4 (AT&T) for almost 2 years now so the battery life is rather terrible and I decided to replace the battery. I ordered a battery from PhonePartsUSA and followed the instructions on ifixit. I had some minor issues with the tiny contact piece, but once I wiped it down with ethanol, it was seemingly fine. When I plugged it in I saw the charging/lightening bolt icon in the upper right with an increasing percent. When it reached 100%, I unplugged it from my wall charger. The issue now is that after 1-2 minutes of use on battery (browsing internet on WiFi), my iPhone turns off by itself.
Also, when I plug it in to my laptop via USB, iTunes does recognize it.
I would like to self-repair, if possible, and was hoping someone here could point me in a direction (software, hardware, etc).
Thanks in advance!

Self repair or a competent 3rd party repair shop are your only options now. Apple won't touch it.
ifixit is the best resource out there that I'm aware of for hardware teardowns and repairs of the iPhone. It is not considered user serviceable by Apple, and having opened it and replaced the battery yourself, it is no longer eligible either for battery replacement by Apple, or an out of warranty replacement.

my sons iphone will not come on unless plugged into the wall charger. even then when the screen finally comes on it has the wrong date and just says searching. wont do anything.

What troubleshooting have you tried? Try a reset, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot. If it does not, then you need to try and restore via iTunes. Try connecting the phone to the computer and iTunes and see if it is recognized. If not, you will have to force it into Recovery mode and restore. See this support document for that help. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • IPod Classic won't turn on unless plugged into wall even though battery is charged

I plugged in my old iPod Classic and charged it up for a long time. I got that little plug symbol that indicates that it's fully charged. The iPod turns on and works fine when it's plugged into the wall, but as soon as I unplug it, it won't do anything at all. Just black screen. I also tried plugging it into the computer. Nothing.
I tried re-setting by toggling the "Hold" button and then pressing Play/Pause and Menu at the same time. Nothing.
Why would it be fine when plugged into the wall but not when unplugged or plugged into the computer? Is it possible that is really is not fully charged even though it did show that little plug symbol? It had been just sitting for many months.

    Hi there,
How old is your Classic? Often, after a couple of years, rechargable batteries begin to fail, especially after such a long period of inactivity. This happens with any gadget with this type of battery.
Try leaving it plugged in for 24 hours, and try again, to rule out that it isn't just really low on charge. If this doesn't help, it may be a good time to buy a replacement. New iPod Nanos and Touches will be released this October.
Below, I've linked to an Apple website which explains rechargable batteries, and why yours may not be working.
    Apple - Batteries
I hope this helps, and I hope upgrading your device will not feel like an unnecessary expense. Let me know if you have any more questions,
    Nathan

  • Dropped iPhone 4s and now won't turn on unless plugged into wall

    Hi there,
So I dropped my iphone 4s onto a hard floor 2 days ago, it was at 95% battery at that point. It now will only turn on when I plug it into the wall, and as soon as I unplug it, the phone turns off immediately.
When it is plugged into the wall it shows 100% battery and the signal (both wireless and carrier) are very touchy and it says 'searching...' a lot of the time.
I have had the phone for 19 months now and am out of warranty. It is also worth noting that 1 month ago I replaced the battery myself because I was having battery issues and it has been working perfectly since then up until this incident.
If anyone has any idea of how to fix this or any idea of what the problem may be it would be much appreciated. I have tried holding the home screen and top button simultaneously and also tried plugging into my laptop to restore but the laptop will not start the phone up, it just goes into a cycle of going to apple logo screen and then shutting off.
    Thanks very much.

The drop either jarred loose the battery connection or cracked the main circuit board. As you have repaired it yourself Apple won't touch it, so you might as well take it apart and see what has happened.

I  am having a similar odd issue. First of all this summer i took my iphone 4 to apple because my screen had quit. I could hear calls and texts coming thru but screen was unresponsive. I was a month out of warranty so the nice fella at apple gave me a 30 day warranty, then replaced my handset with a refurb. Saturday night at dinner i was on my phine and it died. I plugged it in thinking nothing of it and went to bed. When i wooe up after the charger had been on all night all i had was the black screen with the battery (red) and lightning bolt, meaning it knew it plugged in but still did nothing. So off to apple i go. They said i was out of warranty and the problem (never said what problem) would cost 170 bucks to fix. So i went and upgraded to the iphone 5 ( figured if i'm spending that anyways may as well be on a new phone). When I got home i tinkered with the old one with all the online suggestions i could find. (Cleaning ports, hard reset, putting into recovery mode, and checking indicators for water damage which there was none). Still only saw the battery symbol. I left it alone figuring i can sell off cheap and someone else can repair. Last night for kicks i plugged it in again and it came to life! It is in recovery mode (needs to be hooked to itunes to regain functionality) but showed 100% battery charge. I went to show my bf and realized an issue. If its not plugged into the wall adaptor, it wont turn on. I figured then that if i can get it plugged in and pull it up on itunes maybe it would be fine. When plugged into the computer it wont hold enough power. It thrns on shows the apple for 30 seconds, shuts off. My ending conclusion on my own is that it needs a new battery in order to be revived. Anyone think this sounds like a reasonable conclusion? Or will i be wasting money? If i can get it restored to functional, cheaply i can give to my bf (his pos lg phone is almost toast) or sell it.

My iPhone 5s with iOS 7.1 become very hot when charged almost reach 100 % and will shut down itself. Then I need to off the power and let it cool down first before I can on the phone back. Please help me to solve this problem. Thanks.

    Hi Limfromsi,
It is normal to an extent for the iPhone to get warm during charging. If your iPhone is currently in a case, you may want to try charging it without one and see if the issue occurs, as the design of the iPhone uses the exterior of the device as a cooling surface. For more information about iPhones and temperature, you may find the following article helpful:

If you continue to have issues with your iPhone in the default config (no case, using the included original cable and power adapter), you may want to have your phone evaluated for service. The following page may be of use:

  • IPhone 4s loses battery while charging?

In the past week or week and a half, I noticed that my iPhone acutally loses battery while charging. I use my phone as an alarm clock so I plug it in overnight to be fully charged by the morning. I noticed it when I plugged it in one night at about 80%, I woke up and it was 20-30%. This has happened consistently every night since it started, not always to 20% but around 60% or slightly higher. I've tried charging to outlet I used, turning off my wifi overnight, taking the case off at night and closing all of my apps so there is nothing running in the background. I even turn my brightness all the way down. I have no idea what's wrong and nothing is able to fix it. My phone isn't new, it's about three years old (I got it a few months after the 4S came out originally). Is the phone just getting old and needs to be replaced or does it need to be sent back to Apple to be looked at or have the battery replaced?

Charging the battery means doing work on the battery and does produce heat.  How much heat is the quesion.  Is your iPhone to hot to handle or is it just getting warm?  Warm is normal, and if you feel the charger it will also be warm while charging.
If the iPhone is too hot to handle, that is not normal and should be checked out by an Apple tech at an Apple store genius bar.

  • My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.

My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.  It sometimes happens over and over until I leave it alone for a while (still not charging), and then it works.

I think you might get a new phone instead of repairing it as it takes time and you said the repairing center is far from your living place

  • Can I have the back panel of my iPhone 5s replaced (it is damaged, but the phone is still operational) if i come into an Apple store?

Can I have the back panel of my iPhone 5s replaced (it is damaged, but the phone is still operational) if i come into an Apple store?

I have applecare plus, but this only covers operational issues or 2 accidental issues (ex., water damage, drop and phone operation is affected).
Apple would not be willing to charge me for the back panel and labor involved in replacing it?
    Thanks.

It sounds very very much like the battery. You will need to have it replaced. If you put the failing one in yourself you will need to pay as your Warranty is now void.

If you mean you didn't backup or sync your phone, everything on it will be lost when you get a replacement unless the techs are able to do this.  Apps can be re-downloaded.
