Iphone 4 software update causing internet dropout

Hello,
I recently purchased my first Mac, a Macbook Pro, and I have an iPhone 4.  I have yet to update the iPhone, and when I connect the device via iTunes, and the software update download attempts to begin, the download will begin but very rapidly slow and then cease.
I am connecting to the internet via the Macbook Pro using Airport, to a Netgear WSG624v3, and a Comcast provided RCA modem.  I have had plenty of issues with the router and modem, soon to be resolved, hopefully, but I am positive the issue is related directly to the software update file attempting to download.
I am totally able to connect to the internet via multiple devices, and access all sorts of content.  The software update download startup will cause my network to drop connection to the internet for a few minutes, then it will automatically reconnect.  Attempting the download again results in the identical scenario replaying.
I have also noticed that attempting to download certain podcasts via my iPhone 4 over the wireless network can cause a general connection loss.
Is this a firewall issue?  I am only using the Apple-supplied firewall and whatever might be on my Netgear router...should I kill the Netgear security entirely and give the download a shot?  I don't want to risk compounding headaches with a security issue.
Thanks in advance for your help - I am very new to all things Apple, so please be very explicit and detailed with any and all information and step-by-steps you might be able to provide.

  • Software update causes internet outages

I have had this issue 3 times.  Jetpack asks for software update and once the update is complete, intermittent internet outages occur.  Any way to roll back software or wipe the SD card and start again and not accept the software update.

    Its a
    Jetpack™ 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot™
and I have done all that and talked to Verizon. I have a different model jetpack that works perfectly fine so I know its not my location, my PCs or any other variable.  I am on my 3rd JetPack under warranty.  It seems that until the software update is done, the jetpack works fine.  What I am trying to figure out is does the software upgrade go to the SD card or the firmware of the jetpack.  If its to the SD card, I saw somethign about reformatting the SD card, however I am not quite clear how to do this as I don't see it as a drive when I connect the jetpack to my laptop.  Just looking for other options.  This really needs to go to Pantech but I don't have any power there.

  • HT4623 Iphone software update caused wifi to stop working

When I updated my iphone 4s several weeks ago, it caused my wifi button to gray out and become non-functional.  Several apps also stopped working.  Can this be fixed?

Not likely, But try, Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. See if better. If not, restore iPhone Firmware with iTunes 10.7 or 11 on computer. See if better. If not, and there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • Error while trying to upgrade my iPhone, message reads "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server beecause your are not connected to the internet.

    Hello,
I am trying to upgrade my iOS to version 5 but receive the message noted below ("iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet"). I click update on iTunes.  My internet works fine.  Does anyone know what may be causing this error?

Try disabling firewall and virus scanning software

  • ITunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet...???

    Ok I’m completely lost here....
I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600), I updated iTunes to 11.0.2.25 and some other updates for windows last night on my laptop. I try connecting to download the iOS 6.1.2 update for my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 5 via iTunes. I am getting this message for both "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Everything was fine with connecting prior to running these updates because I downloaded the 6.1 update with no problems when it came out.
What I have done so far with which has made no difference:
    Checked my internet connection
    Changed my internet connection
Signed out of iTunes and then signed back in
Ran diagnostics via iTunes, comes back with: Network interfaces verified- Internet connection failed- Secure link to iTunes store verified
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-02-20 20:40:48.
Disabled firewall, spy sweeper, virus scanner
    start>run>cmd> typed "netsh winsock reset"
    Rebooted
Checked the parental controls in iTunes
    Start>control panel>internet options>connections tab> lan settings> selected the "automatically detect settings"
    Deleted iTunes and reinstalled iTunes
When I would "ping gs.apple.com" it would come back with "request timed out" no matter what internet connection I was on, so I went into the hosts file  start>my computer>(C:)>WINDOWS>system32>drivers>ect>HOSTS and added  "#     127.0.0.1     gs.apple.com". Now it will ping gs.apple.com just fine but still comes up with the "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet" message in iTunes when i try to download the update.
If anyone can come up with any ideas that I haven’t tried, please let me know. This is keeping me back from updating both of my phones along with if anything should ever happen to them; restores as well.

im computer is connected i can go to the apple store through itunes but when i plug my phone in i keep getting that alert... i plugged my phone in to update it after the apple loaded the itunes icon and a usb showed up.

But i checked my internet on both my pc and iphone and tried again but it still says the same thing. plzz plzz help

Were you definitely connected to the internet at the time? If you don't have iOS 5 on your iPhone then the only way to update it would be via iTunes, once updated to the latest version of iOS you'll be able to update your iPhone without connecting to iTunes "over-the-air".
Before updating however it goes without saying to Backup your iPhone, this should happen by default upon connecting your iPhone to iTunes.

iPhone 5 was updated (version unknown), and now screen shows 'Connect to iTunes.  When we try to do this, we get message 'iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet'.
Please tell me how I fix this problem.
    Thanks

Yes, the reason you are getting the error is the phone cannot provide internet for the laptop and then update itself. It would lose connection as you erase the firmware and try to update. You need to connect the computer to the Internet in some other fashion before you connect the phone to try and fix the update problem. As Ocean20 says, and I completely agree, how would you think you could use the Internet connection of a device that is not only going to turn off and on, but is going to get completely wiped of firmware and restored? It would completely remove the device from the equation here. Does that make sense to you?

  • TS1814 iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the Internet.

I have attempted all of the above suggestions and am still receiving the same error message. I have also turned my internet security off and have received the same message. I am using a dongle for my internet, would this make a difference?

Okay I haven't been able to update my iPhone ever since I updated my iTunes to the 8.0 version either! I just followed your instructions and changed the setting on my control panel and then asked to update and it started updating and after about 10 seconds it popped up with the same message that iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update because you are not connected to the internet. Check back or try again later or whatever. So I went back to the Internet Connections to make sure that my changes saved and they did but it still will not update my phone...this is soooo frustrating!!!! Please help!

  • Updating iPhone Software With Dialup Internet

Unfortunately, I live in Hickville, USA. We do not have high speed internet. I know, I know... I can't believe it either.
My problem is that I have tried multiple times to download the iPhone software update. I simply can't stay connected long enough to do it.
Why in the world can Apple not send a disc to those of us without high speed internet? How come updating the software has to be done through iTunes and not directly to the iPhone over WiFi? How come I make a trip to the nearest Apple location which is 45 minutes away and they tell me it would be 5 hours before they could do an in-store update, which, of course, would delete everything I have on my phone. Then I would only spend another hour getting everything back on my phone when I finally got back home.
I love the phone but it's ridiculous that something as simple as updating it is nearly impossible. Apple could definitely improve in this area.

No, I didn't make an appointment. I actually called Apple support and they recommended that I go to the store. The tech support person never mentioned anything about a genius bar. I hadn't even heard of that until I was told about it at the store.
I gave my phone to someone at work who has highspeed. They attempted the download a total of 6 times on their computer and it kept hanging up around the 97% complete mark. I have a PC at home but no laptop.
I basically just wanted to vent my frustration. Thanks for the reply though.

  • "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted" - problem updating to iOS 6

    Hi all,
I'm a little behind the times, but I'm trying to update my iPhone 3G from 4.2 to 6. Unfortunately, whenever I try, I get a message that "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted".
I've looked around for a fix - including one that asked me to check my "Automatically detect LAN settings" - but that was of no use. I should point out that my phone is not jailbroken and that I am connected to the internet via USB dongle. I have temporarily disabled AVG as well.
Does anyone know what's causing this issue and how I can be rid of it?
    Thanks very much in advance.

An iPhone 3G cannot be updated beyond iOS 4.2.1...that's the end of the line for your phone.

    Hi
Thanks but I have tried doing the above - when I said 7 times I was modest, its more like 15 times.
And I am referring to the 5.1 software update. I dont have wifi so I guess I will have to try that seeing that my husband also has the same problem - he has also tried downloading several times. It always times out en says that the connection is lost but yet there are always an internet connection and a decent signal once it stopped. Think it said error 32052 or something!
I am disappointed because the update includes inprovement on the battery life - did you guys notice any difference?

  • Can't update my Iphone (the iphone software update server could not be contacted)

    Hello,
I've been trying to fix this problem by my self with no luck so I'm writing to you guys, hoping you will have the right answers.
I dropped my iPhone4 today and it turned off, when I plugged it into a charger it showed me a screen of IOS6 (which I didn't had this update updated) and when I "silde right" it wrote that I need to update it by iTunes.
So I opened ITunes while my IPhone was connected that it automatically tried to update it as needed, after 20 seconds of loading I get this error massage:
"the iPhone software update server could not be contacted"
I've tried everything; turning off firewall, update my AntiVirus, restarting my router, restarting pc while IPhone not\connected, changed usb exist (using a back exit atm),changing usb cable and even reinstalled my iTunes (yes, my iTunes is up to date), although when I tried to update my itunes it gives me this error:
"The iTunes update server could not be connacted. Please chek your Internet connection, or try again later. " but I don't think it's related but worth to mention it.
    My iPhone is NOT jailbreaked
please help me to fix this problem,
    Thanks In Advnace.

    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

  • ITunes: "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted"

Could someone please help me with a problem that I´m having with iTunes that´s really annoying. I want to update my iPhone 3G with the latest 3.0 software. For the first time ever iTunes is giving me the following message every time I try to update (been for more than 24 hours now):
+The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.+
I also get a message if I try to click on the update itunes( not that I need to, as it updated to iTunes 8.2 earlier this month) but still I figure it´s all part of the same problem:
+The iTunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your Internet connection, or try again later.+
    Solutions tried so far:
    * Going through my internet connection settings - I´m connected to the internet with no problems!
    * Changing from wifi to wired connection - same thing, can´t update
    * Reinstalling itunes (twice) - no difference
    * Switching off Netbarrier
I don´t know what else I can do. I´m beginning to think it may be related to either iTunes being updated to 8.2 or one of the many recent software updates apple has been sending us of Mac OS. My computer is got all recent updates.
    Please help!

Thanks for the response. Yeah I'd seen that a lot of these issues in the past had mainly affected Windows users. Anyway I tried naming a new location and no success and I don´t really understand the last post in that thread. There is no "check for updates" under the help menu. It's only in the itunes menu and that´s what I keep trying to do with the same message.
Anyway it's clear to me now that it's not a local connection issue nor an iPhone server issue. I've since upgraded to the 3.0 software via a Windows PC without any problems and without having to sync all the music and stuff which is a relief. Afterwards, when I put it back into my Mac all it asked me to do was a backup and nothing else had been synced (or wiped) so the immediate problem is out of the way. It's just this remaining issue now that iTunes still won´t connect to update servers although it does connects to the itunes store all ok. Any other ideas before I call Apple on Monday?

The iphone software update server could not be contacted" - error message recieved when i try to update to 5.1.1 via itunes , what can i do ?

    Dear Lawrence Finch:
If you're still around I hope you see this message, as you're the FIRST person (after reading every link, thread, other sites, apple support articles, etc.) to mention JB may be causing this iTunes popup window to REPEATEDLY occur:
"The iPhone software update server could not be contacted."
No, I did not hack anything (are you kidding?  Grannies don't hack!), but I unknowingly bought a 3Gs iOS 3.1 from ebay that was not advertised as JB.  Since it is like brand new, I was going to keep it (because my old backup is iOS 3.1.2) & was trying to simply restore & update, which (I thought) would remove the JB (that's what everybody says at forums, etc).
Instead, after "erasing all settings/content" (inside phone's Settings to get the prior person's name out of there), it is now stuck in White Apple Mode.
Put it in DFU/Recovery Mode & connect to iTunes but that stupid above message keeps appearing & I have already read/tried EVERYTHING to get rid of that message, starting with:
    1.  OLD phones (3Gs) with OLD iOS 3.1+ should work FINE with OLD Mac (iBook) with OLD OSX (Tiger 10.4.11) with OLD iTunes (9.2.1[5]).  So that can't be the problem.
Here's all the other things apple & others say to check which I already checked:
    2.  USB ports are FINE, both work FINE, so that's not the problem.
    3.  No "extra USB devices" are connected, ONLY a mouse, & then the phone (yes, I tried it w/o the mouse connected but that didn't help).
    4.  No "usb hubs."
    5.  Latest iTunes for this OSX has already been DL'd (iTunes 9.2.1[5]).  If you know of a newer one for this OSX, please advise.
    6.  No antivirus software.
    7.  No security software.
    8.  No routers; only 1 comcast modem, period.  Wired Ethernet.
    9.  No wifi gadgets, no wifi at all.
    10.  No firewalls, except what is on iBook in the SHARING/System-Prefs. section.  It's turned OFF.
    11.  Did the hosts/terminal thing sudo nano whatever it was.  There were only 3 lines, NO gs.apple.com:
    xxxxx local host
    xxxxx broadcast host
    xxxx local host
Oh, & btw, ATT officially unlocked this phone (after I filled out their online forms) but I can't finish the process via iTunes to get their Confirmation that "Device is Now Unlocked," so I can use T-Mo.
So that's it.  If you have any other ideas of what to do from here, since from your comment, maybe it's the stupid JB on this phone that is causing the problem (???), please advise.
    Many thanks!
