IPhone 4 (UK) is it real sim free?

Hi guys,
Refer to http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone
I'd like to know that if i buy iPhone 4 from UK, can i really use it anywhere? I plan to travel to some countries in South East Asia and I want to make sure that i can use my iPhone over there.
I notice that the FAQs said "iPhone 3GS works with SIM cards and iPhone 4 works with micro-SIM cards from compatible carriers, including prepaid cards." and the compatible carriers that Apple mentions just for O2, Orange, and Vodaphone? Can i use any local carriers?
Thanks so much.

I also travel a lot in Asian (Thailand/Cambodia) and have looked into this.
Yes an iPhone purchased from the Apple shop without taking out a carrier contract at the same time in the UK is sim free and can be used on any network, however many countries that are not selling the iPhone until much later than this weeks release date may not bother to supply micro sims as +the demand for them will be small,+ at least that is the current reasoning of both AIS and True in Thailand.
So although theoretically you can use the phone anywhere in the world it is going to be dependant of the local carriers supplying micro sims and there will also be many places, Cambodia is a prime example, where there is no 3g service to speak of so the phone will be resticted to 2g and wireless.

  • Why is the price of an unlocked iPhone 4 is the same as sim-free?

In September 2010 I purchased all'Apple Store in San Francisco one iPhone4 sim-free, before I asked the seller if you could use it in Italy and he answered yes, but does not work with the Italian telephone operators GSM.
I only found out after my phone only works with operator AT&T.
Why is the price of an iPhone 4 unlocked is the same as Iphone 4 sim-free?
I would be unlocked for free from Apple, I have paid to have a iPhone4 unusable in Italy, thanks
    Bye

The U.S. Apple store publicized as the type of Sim-free iPhone, and not as a contract-free.
Now in the Apple store site, including the FAQ for purchasing iPhone4 unloked, is written:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC603LL/A?mco=MjI4NTM2NTM
"Why does the price of the unlocked iPhone differ from the price of a contract-based iPhone?
Carriers typically subsidize the purchase price of the phone when purchased with a service contract. By purchasing your iPhone unlocked, you are not committing to a service contract up front, so you can use any micro-SIM card from a supported GSM carrier, including your current one"
I wonder why I pay the same price as a phone but an identical unlocked, it is a fraud

  • HT1937 with a serial number can i tell if my iphone is sim free or not?

i bought 2 iphone from some guy and he told me that they are sim free
when i put in the sim back then its showed me that there is a bar of signals, but then i saw that i need to do activition also.
its mean that the iphone is lock or not ? sim free or not?
or the signals dont have any connection to that.
any way what i need to do?

No. You can not tell  by the serial number or the model number. You can call Apple care and they may be able to tell you.
They are most likely a)stolen, b) hacked, c)carrier locked, or d) some combination of these.
What did you think you were going to get buying iPhones from "some guy". You're lucky that he didn't just knock you upside the head with a brick and take your money.

These are correspondences between me and O2 after Apple Support told me that I have to contact O2 directly and ask for their help to unlock my SIM-FREE iPhone.
    O2 Replied to me:
    Good afternoon Wiroonsak
Thanks for emailing us to unlock your iPhone.
Wiroonsak, we can definitely help you with the unlatching code for your
iPhone. As per the recent changes, it's no longer mandatory to use the
iPhone on the O2 network for at least 12 months for unlocking the
iPhone. However, if you've the O2 Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On is active on your
account then it will get removed from your account if you haven't
    completed the 12 months.
Kindly note that there is also a charge of £15 (the charge is £14.69
until we put the VAT back up) for the unlatching code and the iPhone has
to be used on the O2 UK network. The £15 will be deducted from your
calltime balance for the unlocking code to get processed. You can Top-Up
    your mobile phone accordingly.
For me to help you in unlocking your iPhone, please reply to this email
    with the following information:
    - current calltime balance (by dialling *#10# free from your phone)
    - name of the tariff active on your account
    - account activation date
    - SIM Serial Number (the 19 digit number found on the back of your SIM
    card, which starts with 894411?).
    - IMEI (to get this key *#06# on your mobile phone).
I'm sure you'll understand that this is to protect the interests of our
customers and to keep in line with the Data Protection Act.
Once I receive the above information and it's verified, I'll be happy to
    help you.
    I look forward your reply.

And another O2 replied to me....
    Hello Wiroonsak
Thanks for getting in touch to unlock your new iPhone 4. I'll be glad to
    assist you with your query.
I'd like to let you know that to make sure our iPhone 4 stock is
reserved exclusively for genuine O2 customers during launch, I'm afraid,
we won't able to unlock your new iPhone 4 for you.
Wiroonsak, you may click on the link below for the latest information on

I hope I've resolved your query to your satisfaction.
    Have a wonderful evening ahead!
    Shannon
    O2 Customer Service
And this is my reply back to O2 today....
    Hello Shannon,
Thank you for your kind advice. I tried the link given but unfortunately came across the following message: "Thanks for visiting the O2 Online Shop. Unfortunately, we are unable to sell to countries outside the UK."
I contacted Apple Support again today regarding the issue and they gave me confirmation that my iPhone (serial number 88023E7FA4S) is a SIM-FREE one and should not be locked by any carrier at all, especially without my permission. They also tell me that this problem is an error caused by O2 to lock my iPhone during the activation of the iPhone purchased, be it intentionally or not.
In this case, I would very much appreciate if you could give a second try and kindly help unlock my iPhone.
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Kind regards,
    Wiroonsak Poonlarp
And lets see what will happen next in the near future.

  • Bought iPhone as "SIM-Free", but it not work with my local SIM card

I have bought iPhone Serial No: 82108W75A4T in Canada as "SIM-Free", but it not work with my local SIM (Orange in Israel) card. Where to check: it is or not Factory Unlocked or have any hardware/software problems or have carrier ("adhered" any phone company)

In the local Orange: They tried with them SIM, the same negative result.
I have addressed to Canadien phone wireless carriers.
From some [Rogers'] has already received the answer:
... have checked our system and did not find your iPhone listed...  Please contact Apple...

Apple can do nothing. As Tim said, only the carrier to whom the iPhone is locked can authorize unlocking. You must contact that carrier.

  • If I buy a Sim free iPhone in the UK will I be abel to use it on PAYG in Australia?

If I buy a Sim free iPhone in the UK will I be abel to use it on PAYG in Australia? Or will in need jailbreaking? And what does this even mean?!
Also, I'll still have a UK SIM (vodafone) that I'll want to check from time to time - will this work?
    thanks

The iPhone4 and 4S use a microsim about half the size of the normal sim
You would have to get replacements for your old sims to use a iPhone4/4S
and no unlocked is unlocked will work anywhere with a GSM sim
people use jailbreaking to get round not having an unlocked iPhone
Go to an UK Apple Store
you can reserve the night before online so you don't have a wasted journey
    http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/iphone/
UK Apple stores only sell unlocked iPhones
They will sell you one with a contract but you will have to go through a contract sign up process etc etc so there is no scope for error

Look at your receipt. Does it say unlocked? It is possible to purchase both locked "sim free" and unlocked iPhones from Apple.
ONLY the carrier an iPhone is locked to can legitimately unlock it.
IF your receipt says that it was supposed to be unlocked, and it is not, call AppleCare. They should be able to straighten it out.
