IPhone 4 unable to be restored by iTunes.

iPhone 4 unable to be restored by iTunes.  Following 'restoration' it returns with the message 'iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.'  How do I successfully restore my iPhone?

press ' ok'  and then ' restore iPhone'
If the restore seems successful and then the message comes up again: try on another computer. If the issue persists on another computer: the device needs hardware repair.

  • Hi, I've just tried to upgrade my iphone 3gs and it wont restore from itunes or connect to the server to activate. Sorry I started this !  Any ideas please

Hi, I've just tried to upgrade my iphone 3gs and it wont restore from itunes or connect to the server to activate. Sorry I started this !  Any ideas please it's driving me mad and Ive lost my phone

What is the exact message you're getting?

  • My iTunes won't detect my iPhone that has to be restored via iTunes *because if pass code problems* and its running iOS 7.2

my iTunes won't detect my iPhone that has to be restored via iTunes *because if pass code problems* and its running iOS 7.0.4

If itunes is comming up and saying it can't read the device because it's locked with a passcode, you may have to put your device into recovery mode first.
To put your device in recovery mode: (Following these steps will erase your device and reset everything to factory defaults)
    1) press and hold the power button until you see the slide to power off option
    2) swipe to power off
    3) Press and hold the home button while the device is off and connect it to your computer. Continue holding the home button until you see a graphic with the iTunes logo with a picture of a USB cable below it.
    4) iTunes should give you a message that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click ok and then select Restore iPhone. iTunes will download a fresh copy of iOS and then wipe the device and restore it. Depending on the speed of your computer's internet connection this may take a while. Just leave the iphone connected to your computer until it's finished.
If itunes is not detecting it at all or is Not giving you the message that the phone is locked with a passcode, you may end up having to reinstall itunes. This seems to be a fairly common problem after the most recent itunes update (11.1.5)
If this is the case and you happen to be running a windows based computer you will have to uninstall itunes in this order from your programs and features option in control panel:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Then download and reinstall itunes from itunes.com try putting your device into recovery mode again and restore.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

Normally, I would suggest restoring the iPad and uninstall and reinstall iTunes but you have done both of those things - more times than you ever imagined!
Have you thought about turning auto syncing off?
Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
If you do this you can backup the iPad right away before it syncs. You may want to go into all of the iTunes tabs and just make sure that all of the current content on the iPad is selected to sync before you actually do sync.
This doesn't solve the problem, but it would prevent the automatic sync and erasing content. Hopefully, in the next few days- when iOS 5 is released - you will also be relieved of this weird iPad behavior - since the iOS devices are supposed to become PC free.
BTW - and this is no excuse for what you are experiencing, but I have found that some of the game apps that I had on my iPad turned out to be quite troublesome and after I removed them, my problems went away. I know that is almost sacrilege with regard to the Angry Birds addiction .... But I'm just saying ...

  • Just downloaded ios 7.0.4 for my iphone4 and backed up before doing so. Now that it's been updated and restored I keep being asked to setup my iphone. When I select restore from itunes I keep getting stuck on setup iPhone. Cant get back in phone!

I backed up the phone and updated to ios 7.0.4 which took about 2 hours.  Now the phone powers on and says hello in different lagnuages and says to slide to setup.  I am asked to choose a network and then if I want to setup as a new iphone, restore from icloud or restore from itunes backup.  When I select restore from itunes the screen says "connected to itunes".  In itunes I select restore from backup however after a few seconds itunes says that it cannot restore beause there is not enough free space on the iphone.  During this attempt to restore I see the home screen and my screen saver and everything for a split second, then the phone powers off.
I see in itunes that all of my photos and data are still on the phone however I cannot get into the iphone.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • HT201210 Iphone 5 problem can't restore on Itunes "The phone "IPhone" coulnd not  ne restored. An unknown error occured (40)"

my iphone 5 need to be restore, but when i restore it on the Itunes, it stuck until the Itunes said "Veryfing blalbalba" and then came up popup The phone "IPhone" coulnd not  ne restored. An unknown error occured (40). Anyone can help me? or anyone know what going on? Thx

See this extract from Apple Support Doc
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.
As stated, check Hosts file that it points to Apple and not anywhere else.

  • HT4972 iphone 4S unable to exit restore

Hi, this morning I opted to upgrade the iOS 6 when it was available for update, to my surprise, my iPhone 4S went to a restore mode and froze which never came out of it.

I have an iphone4s, the update downloaded to my Macbook Air but the install to the phone failed and it reset the phone to factory defaults (wiped it).   I'm having problems getting it to restore from the backup as well.

  • IPhone 5 Unable to be Restored

Yesterday, my six-month old iPhone 5 randomly stopped responding (black screen). The Home / Power buttons did not trigger any response from the device, even when attempting a reset. I tried plugging the device into my PC, to no avail. I then plugged the device directly into an outlet and tried the reset again, which worked. The phone rebooted and all was well. I plugged the phone into my PC again, using it periodically throughout the night and upon waking up this morning, I encountered the same issue. This time, everything I've tried has failed. After several reset attempts, the device is now demanding I complete the restore process.
Unfortunately, it's taken me several hours to get the restore process to even start, having received several errors ranging from 4005, 4013, 4014 and "device not found". My most recent attempt finally appeared to be working however, iTunes displays "Waiting for iPhone" and the progress bar displayed on the phone itself has not moved at all in the last 90 minutes. My iCloud storage is approximately 1.5 GB, and with a 40 MB connection, I shouldn't be having any issues.
I've looked at about two dozen support articles, so I don't believe there is anything that can be linked to that will be of any use. I've updated iTunes, updated my Windows OS, rebooted my system, etc, etc, etc.
I'm currently using update 7.1.1, as it initially prompted me to update to 7.1.2 upon doing the restore. I'm assuming this update has caused this device failure (unsurprisingly).
At this point, I'm lost as to what to try. I refuse to pay the ridiculous prices Apple charges to fix malfunctions not caused by the user. I essentially need to pay them to tell me "yep, it's junk", which is silly.

    Hey Orbit Storm,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing a few issues with your iPhone 5. It sounds like you were able to get the iPhone working again after following the power-related steps in this resource (resetting while connected to power):
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
I also see that you received a few error messages when attempting to restore your device. I imagine you may have already looked up these error messages, but just in case here they are:
    iOS: Restore errors 4005, 4013, and 4014
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5314
At this point, it sounds like the device is stuck in the restore process. If this issues still persists, you may want to try restoring your device with another computer/usb cable and also using recovery mode:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
    Thanks,

  • Why won't my iPhone 6 not update or restore in iTunes 12.1.0?

I just bought an iPhone 6 and was able to sync to iTunes 12.1.0 on a mac mini running Mavericks. I was prompted to update the phone to a newer operating system. It failed and so did the restore. I updated the computer to Yosemite, I have the latest iTunes and still nothing. Does anyone have a solution? I believe the phone is stuck in recovery mode. Thank you.

Place your iPhone into recovery mode as described here.  You may have to try this more than once to get it into recovery mode so it will complete.

  • IPhone 4 cannot update or restore through iTunes

    Dear all,
I have a iPhone 4 16 GB, bought in September of last year.
I havent updated the phone in a while, and since a couple of months I am trying, and after downloading the update through iTunes, i get the message: Cannot reach the server.
The same happens when i try to restore the iphone through itunes.
The iphone is entirely original so no jailbreak or unlocking.
I am not a pro, so if someone could help me in dummy language, i would owe you my life haha
    version: 4.0.2
    modem firmware: 01.59.00

it seems that itunes can't connect to the apple servers. This is usually caused by your firewall. Turn it off. If turning it off doesn't help or you don't have a firewall, goto this site:

  • My iPhone 3s won't finish restoring and iTunes won't recognize it anymore.

I woke up this morning and my iphone 3s was not working properly and I couldn't make or recieve calls or texts but everything else was working fine. Then I got a notification saying I had to restore it so I did, and it got all the way to the part where you reset the settings like the language and country but when it says "connect to iTunes" it stops working and iTunes won't recognize my phone anymore. It's not under warranty and I don't know if I can fix this myself or if Apple will still fix it for me. I also recently updated all my software so that shouldn't be the problem. Help!

    Hello Lehongdinh,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To troubleshoot this issue of your iPhone not powering on, please follow the steps below:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
