Iphone 4 Unlocking by Apple?

I receive a gift from for an iphone 4, it is locked to Fido. However, I am planning to switch to another carrier, can someone help provide option for me to unlock the iphone? Should I contact Apple for this request or I should ask Fido? Thank you!

None of the Canadian carriers offer official unlocking. If you don't want to use the phone on Fido's network, return it and purchase an officially unlocked phone directly from Apple or purchase a locked phone from the carrier of your choice.

  • Some helpful tips for iPhone unlocking

Some of our community members have asked about questions related to the EE iPhone unlock process, however, there was no official information about it in EE support page. Therefore I'd like to share some tips about this and hopefully it will clear things up.
You can submit your iPhone unlocking request in here: EE/Orange/T-Mobile Unlock Form.
Please do make sure you read all requirements before submitting the request.
If you would like to join EE and wish to unlock your iPhone from other network, you can use the following links:
    Vodafone iPhone unlock request
    O2 iPhone unlock request
    Three UK iPhone unlock request
Apple devices differ from all other manufacturers in that there is no code required to enter into your device in order to unlock your iPhone. However EE have requested on your behalf to Apple that your device be prepared for unlock and the procedure below advises how you can complete this process.
Before attempting the procedure, please make sure that your iPhone is up to date with the latest software version. This can be checked by connecting your device to iTunes via a PC/Mac/Laptop.
iPhone unlock for iOS 6 and iOS 7:
If you have a non-EE SIM Card and you've received confirmation from EE that your iPhone is unlocked, follow these steps:
    Insert a non-EE SIM card.
    Complete the setup process.
If you do not currently have another SIM card you can use, follow these steps to complete the process:
    Back up your iPhone.
    Erase your iPhone.
Complete the setup assistant and restore your backup.
iPhone unlock for iOS 5 or earlier:
Always Back up your iPhone first.
If you've received confirmation from EE that your iPhone is unlocked, follow these steps:
Insert a non-EE SIM card. This must be a network provider who also supplies the iphone/ipad.
    Switch ON the handset.
Connect to iTunes using USB cable.
Use the “restore” option within iTunes. (located at the bottom of iTunes not the top)
The handset may then display: USB cable and iTunes icon.
    Disconnect from USB then re-connect.
    Synchronise device with iTunes.
Once synchronised a message will appear on iTunes stating “Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked”. If using IOS5 this message will not show.
Follow on screen set up instructions to enable new carrier settings.

Does anybody know if the unlock process has a "use by" date? I'll explain. Last year I upgraded my sons iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5. The plan was to give the 4 to my girfriend who is on T-Mobile. Various queries came up that her SIM wouldn't work in it and I would have to have it unlocked (this from staff in the local EE store who wouldn't even lend me their SIM to try it). I paid for the unlock, gave her the phone and told her to wait until I'd had confirmation that it could be unlocked. Nearly 1 year on and I'm doing upgrades again... I have a shiny new 5S so I'm going to give her my 4S and then use the 4 for work (it's better than the Blackberry they sent me). So, I back up the phone, insert my work SIM card (BT Mobile/Vodafone) only to see the message "Invalid SIM". No amount of turning off and on, resetting, wiping clean and re-loading seems to do the job. Does anybody have any ideas? I'll be damned if I'm going to pay to have it unlocked a second time and I'm told that recently even getting a paid unlock from Orange is less fun than amputating your own arm.  Incidentally, when I unlocked my 4S from Vodadone they did it in 4 days and it cost me nothing. Why do EE charge an arm and a leg and take so long over it?

Apart from the lock button problem in iphone 5 the display brightness suddenly goes blank and becomes normal after locking and unlocking the iphone. The Apple service centre in India is denying to service the iphone as it was purchase in USA even though the iphone is in warranty.

iPhones do not have an international warranty.  Warranty is valid only for the country of purchase.  This is most likely because different countries require different iPhone models.  Not reasonable to expect all countries to maintain stock for all models.

Why do Orange and EE blame Apple for the delays in unlocking my iPhone. 10 months now. What is the exact process that these companies have to go through to unlock an iPhone and is Apple in any way to blame for the delays.
Indeed how long does Apple take to carry out its part of the process.
It seems to me that Orange are just trying to stall me despite the fact that I am out of contract with them now.  I originally paid to have the phone unlocked back last November.  This was never done.
I have phoned them numerous times over the last two months but still they haven't done it.  Can anyone advise me and has anyone had similar problems with them.
    Thanks

I certainly understand that only Orange can unlock my phone.  My annoyance is that they blame Apple so I am keen to know what exactly is Apple's involvement.
I presume that Orange have to tell Apple that the phone has been authorised for unlocking by Orange and that Apple then notes that in some way on iTunes so that the user can then complete the process on iTunes.
What I would like to know is how much time Apples part in this process takes.
I would also like to make contact with others who have had similar problems.
    Many thanks

Apple doesn't unlock phones. You will need to contact the original cellular provider to determine if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.

  • Unlocked IPhone 4 from Apple is not working properly on Rogers

I bought IPhone 4 bacjk in May 2011 from Apple was Unlocked. I am using it on Rogers. Since I have updated to IOS 5.0. I am having a weared problem. I daily commute to downtown Toronto using Subway. When I come to Street level and waited for sometimes 2 hours My phone says searching or no signals. I have tried everything per Rogers It is a hardware issue so Apple swopped my phone 3 times. I have changed my SIM card two times. No luck. I have tried enabling 3G on or Off or aeroplane mode On & Off as well. Evertime I need to swicth my phone Off and On to get back to Network. Yeaterday I was at Rogers store they told me because I have bought it unlocked from Apple it did not have the settings and Rogers software on it that might be causing the issue. Any help on this will be appreciated...

  • If i were to buy an iphone unlocked from the apple store in america, could i use it in uk?

i am going to new york at the end of march, and i noticed it is a **** of a lot cheaper to buy an iphone 4s in america than it is in uk. all i want to know is if i buy it unlocked from apple, which i noticed you can do, if i brought it back to uk and used my vodafone sim, would it be fully functional and receive 3G and software updates etc? i'd like to know before i buy

    Unlocked prices are
    16Gb $649.00  32Gb $749.00  64Gb $849.00   ALL PLUS LOCAL SALES tax
As said above in New York thats an extra 8.87%
(you may be able to claim this back at the airport on departure - however you then run the risk on UK customs catching you if you try to run the green channel)
So lets do the math on the middling model
    $749.00 +8.87%   = $815.43
    Todays conversion  = £518.04
You may bring in £390.00 TAX free .
You declare via red channel , you need to pay import duty on £128,.04 at 2.5%
    Thats £3.20
Plus VAT at 20 % on £128.04 + £3.20 (Yes you pay VAT on the duty !)
    So thats an extra £26.24
    Total cost £518.04 + £3.20 + £26.24  = £547.48 and remember you have NO international warranty.
Yo could add a warranty from Protect your bubble.com - that £5.99 per month on top of calls etc.....
    So you should add 12 months at £5.99 p/m = £71.88
Grand total with protection (Near equal to UK purchase)  = £619.36
Apple UK sell this phone unlocked in the UK for £590.00 - WITH warranty .
I really think you should look at the deals from the UK networks with monthly contracts before you do self import.
And remember that ALL UK networks WILL unlock contract phones after a qualifying peroid and for a small fee -Approx £20.00 is the going rate and after no more than three months.

  • I got an iphone from an apple store. does it mean that I can use it in another country (since it must be unlocked)?

Can I use it in another country?
Not sure what factory unlocked really implies..

With restriction and proper procedure, you can probably use the iPhone in another country.  As KiltedTim mentioned, you've failed to provide us with sufficient information.  Since you bought the iPhone form an Apple store, why didn't you speak with someone at the store?

  • IPhone unlocked by carrier, will Apple replace with an unlocked phone in the event of a warranty replacement?

    Hi there.
I use an iPhone with the Canadian provider, Fido.  I purchased the phone from Fido and signed up for a 3 year contract in order to recieve the phone at the reduced price.  I understand that Fido performs a carrier lock on the phone when you sign up in this way so that the phone can only be used on the Fido network.
At the moment I am in the process of cancelling my contract with Fido and switching over to another provider in Canada.  After doing some research, I found out that Fido offers a service where they will unlock your phone from their network when you finish your contract, for a fee.  Since I am cancelling my contract and paying the early cancellation penalty, my contract will be satisfied and I will be eligible for the unlock service.   My plan is to have my iPhone unlocked by Fido so that I can use the phone with my new provider.
My question is this: If I have my phone legitimately unlocked by my provider, will Apple send me an unlocked phone in the event that their is a hardware failure covered under warranty, and I need a replacement iPhone?  All my previous replacement iPhones have been, to my knowledge, locked by Apple back onto my provider before they are sent to me.  But, it would be awfully annoying if a replacement phone came to me locked onto an old network that I no longer use.
Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Are you sure about this? I thought so too, but when I received my replacement iPhone 6, it was locked again.
I bought a carrier locked iPhone. Then it was replaced with another carrier iPhone. This second phone (first replacement) was then unlocked. Later the unlocked iPhone was replaced with a third phone (second replacement). To my disappointment the second iPhone replacement is locked.
The Authorized Service center said that Apple made a mistake and should unlock it remotely ASAP. Apple Support however, says that iPhones are replaced with specifications of the originally initially purchased iPhone. If the original was unlocked, they would replace it with unlocked, but if it was locked then replaced with a locked and then unlocked by carrier. The carrier should be contacted again to unlock future replacements. I know it sounds ridiculous and illogical.
If an iPhone has been unlocked (obviously by a carrier), why would you replace it with a locked iPhone and ask the customer to contact his carrier and request another unlock for the replacement iPhone? So inefficient and could be a problem if the carrier allows only one unlock per year per line like most do, or if you are no longer a customer of that carrier.
Interestingly I found the following on Apple's "Hardware Warranty". Retrieved from: https://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/ios-warranty-document-us.html):
"Following warranty service your Apple Product or a replacement device will be returned to you as your Apple Product was configured when originally purchased, subject to applicable updates.”
What I understand from this is that replacements will be configured exactly as the originally purchased including any updates made to it. I believe unlock is considered an update.
Apple Support argues that the second device was unlocked (updated), but the original (initial / first) device was not unlocked. Therefore, I should deal with my old carrier to unlock this one.
    How insanely ridiculous is that???

  • I bought an iPhone 4 from apple 2 years ago and I am looking to get the factory unlock code how do I go about it?

I bought an iPhone 4 from apple 2 years ago and I am looking to get the factory unlock code how do I go about it other than go threw your network provoider?

Contact the wireless provider to which the iPhone is locked to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify. Only the wireless provider
can unlock the iPhone; Apple cannot. There is no other way besides
    going through your network provider.
