IPhone 4 will not update to iOS 5

I've been trying to update my VZW iPhone 4 to iOS 5 (curently 4.2.6) to no avail. Whenever I try to download from iTunes, the download will nearly finish and suddenly I'll get a network error and the download will disappear. I've tried multiple days at different times, and keep having the same issue.
I've also tried downloading the firmware update fom an external site, and when I shift+click and add the file, iTunes says "the iPhone could not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible, but the file extension is already .ipsw
This is particularly frustrating because my internet only allows for a ~500 MB download allowance per day, and the only time I can download the file is between 2AM-7AM with download speeds that aren't even 150 KB/s. I'm tired of having to restart the download in iTunes at 2 AM and wait.

first back up info onto itunes. then
recovery mode
open itunes on computer
plug cable into computer not iOS device
turn device off
hold home button and plug cable into IOS device. do not release home button until an itunes graphic appears on IOS device.
look to computer should have message about recovery mode click ok and restore

iPhone 3GS, which should be compatible with IOS 5, will not upgrade. I have synced with iTunes and it says there are no further updates, and there are no software updates available on the phone, and yet in the 'about' section of General Settings it says it is running version 4!!
How do I get it to update to IOS 5 if iTunes is telling me there are no more software updates!?

Yes, upon checking the model number it looks as though it is actually an iPhone 3G!! The box said 3GS but I think my friend must have given me the wrong box!

I've tried 8 times to download the iPhone Software Update from iTunes but it fails every time. Now my phone will not even recognize that there is an update. This is the first time I've had to update my iPhone and I'm not sure why it won't work. Help!

I have the same problems with updates. Mine also won't backup to my computer. I finally got it backing up to the cloud. I have to reset to factory settings to do iOS 7 update, but I really don't want to do that every time there's a software update. Did you figure it out?

I have an iPhone 4 running 4.3.5. However when i plugged it in and tried to update through iTunes it gets to the verifying software stage and then pops error 3194. I have tried googling this and everything points towards my hosts file. However I have tried this on several other laptops (one MacBook and one Windows laptop) and it shows the same error each time (well an error that said 'This device is not eligable...' on the MBP).
Does this point to a problem with the phone? How can i upgrade to iOS 5?

Iphone 4 will not update to iOS 7.1

Iphone 4 goes through all the motions of downloading AND installing latest iOS update (7.1) however on restart it is still only showing as Version 7.0.6.
Has anyone got any ideas how to resolve this?

Have you tried connecting to your computer and updating via iTunes?
You may have to do a full restore to upgrade:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
   1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
       other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
   2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
       until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
              * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
                Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
                release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
       device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
       let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some

IPhone 4 will not update! HELP!

My iPhone 4 will not update to IOS 5.0, an error message keeps coming up that that 'network connection timed out'. I'm connected to my Wi-Fi at all times.

I had the same problem. I waited about one hour with the progress bar on iTunes at about 50% and the progress bar on my iPhone 4 at about 20% with no further progress.
I unplugged iPhone, got the error message (9), shut down iTunes, restarted my Macbook Pro, did a hard reset on iPhone and then reconnected to my MBP. iTunes launched and notified me that my iPhone needed to be "restored."
I went ahead and did the restore, which took only about 8-10 minutes. I did not restore the prior iphone backup, but chose to synch it as a new iphone. All went well. It now shows iOS 4.2.1 and all I have to do is manually install the apps I want, etc....
