IPhone 4 won't back up (among other iTunes sync problems)

I've posted this issue in the iPhone forum (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18962855?ac_cid=op123456#18962855) but I'm having a series of overlapping problems related to my iPhone 4 and iTunes so I'll post here as well.  Here's the long diatribe
1) 90% of the time that I try to open up the  "Music/iPod app" on my iPhone, it crashes before it loads anything viewable or listenable.   5% percent of the time it simply loads an empty interface with no music.  I know that there is music on there becuase the reamining 5% of the time it does work, and even when it doesn't work I can hit play on my headphone remote and listen to tracks.  These symptoms are present regardless of whether I have iTunes Match turned on or off on the phone itself (yes, I'm a paid user)
1A) During the 5% time that the Music/iPod app does work, iTunes Match, or iTunes in the Cloud, or whatever the **** ya wanna call it, doesn't work in any stable shape or predictable way.   Although I can "see" my tracks, any attempt to download them to my phone (even with WiFi connection) usually causes the phone to get confused about what it's downloaded vs what it hasn't.  For example, if i choose an album and click download all, then it'll start playing the songs as they come in (sometimes with hiccups, presumably from unfinished downloads).    Fine, no problem.  However, even if all song completely download as intended, I will eventually get an alert on the iphone saying "can't download track from the cloud" or "error downloading track from cloud"  (I don't have this alert committed to memory so I'm paraphrasing).   When this happens and I go to the Music Store to view the download que (which is somewhat odd since I'm not buying the tracks, but I digress) ALL of the tracks that I have selected to download  show a status of "waiting" even though ALL of them have actually already downloaded and I've listened to them.  The only way to alleviate the neverendign cycle is to do a restart on the phone.
2) I wanted to back up my phone and do a complete restor to factory setting but I can't sync through iTunes.  When I connect the phone with the USB connector, iTunes sits in a perputual state of "Syncing iPhone (Step 1 of 5)" while the never ending sync clock spins at the top of my iPhone.
2A) If I disconnect the phone manually (pull the cord), the syncing arrows still spin. The only way to stop it is to do a restart on the phone.
2B) I've tried deleting previous backup files and manually backing up with no success.  Someone on the iPhone forum suggested manually deleting from ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup but that path doesn't even exist on my system.  Sounds like that could easily be the culprit but even a new install of iTunes isn'ts solving the problem and it raises other questions of where my backups are currently residing.
3) When the phone is connected to my laptop with the USB dock conector, iTunes says that my 32gb iPhone 4 is over capacity by 3.1gb.    However, when looking on the iPhone itself, it says that I've used 17.4GB and have 11.2 available.
Notes which may or may not be of significance:
A) I had a corrupted iTunes library on my external hard-drive a few months ago.    I don't know if this was the cause or the result of the above problems but that issue has since been taken care of. Sadly, my phone problems still persist.
B) I've just learne of the application iExplorer and was thinking of using that to address any bad iTunes library that might exist on my phone. However, because I can't back up my phone yet (see 2 and 2A above), I'm reluctant to use any third party solution just yet.   I would love to know anyone's feedback on this product however.

I just updated my iTunes to 9.2.1 and my iPhone 4 backed up just fine. Did you make sure you did a restart of you computer after update. Check in your iTunes prefs and see if you have your auto sync disabled under devices. Let me know what happens

  • Unlocked iPhone 4S won't back up now. How do I fix that?

My newly unlocked  iPhone 4s won't back up to my computer with iTunes now. It says it's disconnected. How do I remedy that and keep the unlock?
I unlocked my phone following the instructions I was sent by Sprint, my carrier.
It seems like unlocking an iPhone can cause a variety of problems (or so I gather from trying to research this)

Also, I'm not clear if restoring it will help. I haven't tried it yet.

    Hi
You need to upgrade to the next OS 10.6 Snow Leopard by purchasing the DVD online.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
and once installed, use Software Update

I just updated iTunes to the newest version-12.1.0.71 (Feb 2 2015) and after updating, my iPhone 5 won't be show up on iTunes at all.
It charges and shows up on my computer, so whats the problem? I've restarted both the iPhone and the PC.

    Hi Guys,
Below is the solution which has worked for me. Hope it works for you guys as well.
    Steps:
    1.  Connect your iPhone to Computer thru USB
    2.  Go to Device Manager.
    3.  Then check in Imaging Device, Other Devices, Portable Devices, or Universal Serial Bus Controllers and see if you see Apple iPhone.
    4.  Now right click where it shows Apple iPhone and click on "Update Driver Software"
    5.  Then Click Browse My Computer for driver Software.
    6.  Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
    7.  Click the Have Disk button
    8.  In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
    9.  Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
         C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
    10. Double-click the "usbaapl" file. It may also say sometimes "usbaapl64"
    11. Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
    12. Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly. Boom !!! It done and worked for me.
Let me know if it worked for you guys.
    Cheers !!!!

  • My Iphone won't back up to my itunes account on my computer when I plug it in, It syncs but when it tries back up I get an error message. I have tried to restore it to the last time it was backed up but still it didn't work.

    Hi,
I got my iphone last year and It was working just fine until June of this year and I didn't notice it until I tried plugging my iphone into my computer to get more songs on it. Error message came up saying that it was unable to backup iphone because an error occurred. So I did some research and tried to delete old backups and restore to the last one. After all that it still won't back up and some of my apps just don't work, thought the new ios would help but it did not. Everything works fine its just that I want to be able to back my phone up and I haven't been able to sync June. Any help would be appreciated.

For your computer first get iTunes to see it by:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    or
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    - The transfer iTunes purchases
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Or redownload them by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to your compute and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

  • Iphone 4S won't back up on itunes, but ipad, ipod and iphone 3GS will.

I took delivery of my new iphone 4S on Friday and am running the latest iOS and latest version of itunes and the phone restored from the back up copy of my 3GS with no problems and is working great.
I have just tried to back up the 4S on itunes (as I usually do weekly), its syncs ok but then I get the error message:
"itunes could not backup iphone because an error occurred"
I have tried deleting previous back ups, deleting the lockdown folder, backing up on another PC and pretty much everything suggested here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2529 apart from reinstalling itunes but it still won't back up and throws up the error message. If I plug in my ipad, ipod touch or old 3GS they all back up immediately which is leaning towards me thinking there may be a problem with the phone rather than itunes.
I have been able to back up via iCloud so I'm not too worried in the immediate future however I do like to keep an iTunes back up as well (for e.g. creating a .csv file of messges etc
Am a bit stuck now and am not sure which direction to go - do you think a restore would change anything (I assume a restore from iCloud would put the phone back to how it is tonight after the iCloud back up so not sure if this will change anything, (I have always backed up to the PC in the past so have no experience of iCloud back up processes) or should I make an appointment at the genius bar? Googling just seems to come up with what I've already done.
    Thanks in advance.

Open iTunes and go to Edit>Check for Updates.  You'll need to be running at least XP SP2 or later to update to version 10.7.

  • IPhone 5 won't back up/update

I have an iPhone 5 and a MBA. My iTunes library is on an external harddrive.
I need to clear up space on my iPhone as well as back it up.
I can't update it because there isn't enough space on the phone.
I can't clear space because most of it is pictures, which won't transfer to iPhoto (I keep getting an error).
I can't back it up because because it won't backup to my external harddrive. There is no option for me to point it to my external drive, and the iTunes library I have opened while I'm trying to back it up is already pointed to the external drive, but it still tries to backup to the regular harddrive, which is full.
I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do here.

  • TS1538 new iphone 4s won't back up to iclound or macbook

My second issue popped up just a few days ago. I am unable to send a picture to anyone via email (gmail).  I checked to make sure MMS is enabled (it is) and I certainly have MMS provided through Verizon.
MMS has absolutely nothing to do with email.
Is this the only email account on the device? If not, are  you able to email pictures via other accounts?
Are you able to send emails with pictures attached from the gmail account on a computer?

  • I changed my apple ID email address and ever since my iphone 5 won't back up to icloud

I got a new email address so i changed my Apple ID email to my new email. Ever since then my iphone won't back up to icloud. Its been about 2 months now and I'm getting nervous about losing my stuff. Is this fixable?

Did you ever change the iCloud ID on you phone after making this change?   If not, to change your iCloud ID, go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new ID.  This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your device, but not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account, your iCloud data will reappear on your device when you sign back in.
To avoid losing photo stream photos, save them to your camera roll (if not already there) before deleting the account.  To do this, open your my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, then tap Save to Camera Roll.

  • TS3694 My iphone 4s won't back up and won't let me install the latest software update?

My iphone 4s won't let me back up and it won't let me install the latest software update?

Back up to where?  What error message do you get?

  • My iPhone 4S won't back up to itunes because an "error" occurred.

I have a Macbook Air, and as of recently (a couple of weeks) my iPhone 4S suddenly won't back up to iTunes. Everything is up to date...I've restarted everything, restored my phone to the last backup, and then deleted my old backup. Nothing has worked...I'm super frustrated. Any suggestions out there?!

That's not as many as some....  However, best to import them into a photo app on your computer and delete them from the Camera Roll in the phone.  You can sync them back to the phone if you wish, but they no longer get backed up in iCloud (or iTunes) and the backup will be much smaller and faster.

  • IPhone 5 won't back up

I have an iPhone 5, model A1429. Every few days I get a warning that states "iPhone not backed up. This iPhone hasn't been backed up. Backups happen when this iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."
This warning has been happening since I got it back in 2013. Under Settings -> iCloud -> Backup, I have enabled iCould Backup. The phone is on Wi-Fi, locked and plugged in every night. Why will it not back up? From this same page I have tried to "Back Up Now", but it will not complete the backup. It says "The last backup could not be completed. Last backup: Never" at the bottom of this page.
Current software is iOS 8.2. Can you guys help me out?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
That might be the case.  To check how large your iCloud backup is please do the following:
To check the size of the backup on your device in iOS 8 or later, tap Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage
Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support
    Have a great weekend,

  • Iphone 4s won't back up properly in Windows 7

    Hello,
So, from what I can tell, this is a fairly common issue, but I've searched forever and haven't been able to find a satisfactory solution. Basically, my iPhone 4s refuses to back up properly in Windows 7. It gets about half way and gets stuck. I have tried resetting warnings, deleting the lockdown folder, deleting the backup both through preferences in itunes, and directly from my computer. I've also done a complete resotre of the phone itself at least 2 times, and the issue still persists. Occasionally, it will sync, but I get the "iTunes could not back up iphone because the backup could not be saved on the computer" error. I thought I fixed this issue a few days ago through some combinaition of the above, but it has just returned, and now refuses to go away. Please help.
    Thank you

How large is the backup to iCloud you are attempting?  How much free space is available in iCloud?

  • IPhone 4 won't back up... because session could not be started. Please Help

    iPhone software: 4.3.5
    iTunes: 10.5
    Windows 7
Okay so here I am trying to back up my iPhone 4 to get it ready for iOS 5 update, but for some reason it wont back up.
    I get the message:
"iTunes could not back up the iphone … because a session could not be started with the iPhone."
    I searched around the web to try to find a solution and have tried every single one;
Changing the time zone on computer.
Deleting previous backup. (made a copy put it on external drive just incase)
    Disabling AppeMobileDeviceService.exe .
    Re-Installing iTunes
    Restarting iPhone
None of those have worked. What is it that I am doing wrong???

    @operea724 & DebyP
I figured out a somewhat simple fix for this problem...I tried searching the internet for solutions, and it took me a couple of trial and error tests before winding up with this very simple solution. It also fixes those with problems with a blank iTunes store after updating to iTunes 10.5.
Resetting the winsock process will fix it. And how to do it:
    1. Close all running programs. Then, click on Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click on Command Prompt -> Click on Run as Administrator (or simply click on Command Prompt if you've got UAC disabled)
    2. Enter the following command line in the window: netsh winsock reset
    3. Press Enter and then it will ask you to restart your computer. Do so. This should fix the CPU Usage and blank iTunes store problems.
    4. Once done restarting, check your Task Manager whether the situation changes or not. If it still persists, try repeating the process...if it still doesn't work...well I guess that's the time that one should contact a local Apple store and ask for a fix...=)
So I hope I was able to help with this response...=)

  • IPhone 5S won't back up to computer through iTunes

I keep getting an error message that says my apps won't back up because the computer isn't authorized when it is authorized. I have gone in and de-authorized and re-authorized the computer and I get the same results. I have an iPad Air and it works fine. Any ideas?
