Iphone 4 won't update to iOS 5 and I think it's my itune's fault

So my iphone has been stuck in this outdated ios for more than a year. Whenever I try to press update to install the iOS 5.1 (or something like that), it says something along the lines of "the iphone software update server could not be contacted." Now I think this is itune's fault because I cannot access the itunes store on it either (possibly a network issue or something?), but when I connect my phone to my computer and access the itunes store through the itunes app on my phone, it works fine. Also, since this is pre-iOS 5, I cannot update straight from my phone, and I'm just overall lost on what to do
It's really irritating not having the chance to put new apps into my phone and it;s just overall really tiring. I'm also inexperienced with fixing network issues etc etc so any detailed and guided help would be much appreciated. I have a iphone 4 and a Windows 7 tower PC.

I've rebooted the iPhone 4 several times (holding the home+power buttons down for several seconds. I've re-installed iTunes and finally got the IOS 6.1.3 update.

If your router is not identified in a national database (don't recall who maintains it or where it is) then there is no location associated with it. Hence your device cannot be located. I suggest you try your test at some public wifi spot, like a bookstore or coffee shop. These places usually have a location associated with their wifi router.

I have an iPhone, i'm not sure what kind, but it won't update to ios 5 it has ios 4.2.1 on it and when i click "check for update" it says "this version of iPhone software (4.2.1) is the current version". I am using a mac with os x Snow Leopard iTunes 10.6

Then it's probably and iPhone 3G, which can't be updated beyond 4.2.1. You can look here to identify it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939.

IPhone 6 not updating to iOs 8.3 either on phone or itunes

I have tried several times to update my iPhone 6, both via the phone and iTunes, but it never completes.
On the phone I get to the agree to terms press it and then nothing happens it remains in the terms and conditions!
On iTunes it commences to down load but increases to 11 hours and never completes stating the download has timed out.
I have tried both several times to no effect. Phone currently at iOs 8.13.
I have even reset my phone totally and it still does not update!
Any suggestions?

IPhone 5 won't update to iOS 8.0.2 on device or iTunes

Hi,
I was wondering if I could get some help with this. My phone is currently operating the iOS 8.0 software and I am trying to upgrade it to the iOS 8.0.2, but every time I do a pop up box appears saying unable to check for update, an error occurred while checking for a software update, try again or cancel.
When I plug the device into my macbook pro and start up iTunes to update it that way, I click on update and a box pops up with contacting the iPhone update server, but then nothing happens. I get the blue and white lines box with an option to stop. I let it run, but no update.
I can't update any of my apps and I can't re add Facebook app to my phone.
Does anyone have any options or suggestions?

After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error when attempting to update. You may want to consider restarting the device first, and then resetting if that does not work. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Iphone won't update to IOS 4.2

Ok the problem is very simple like i said in the title i can't seem to update my iphone4 to ios 4.2. I have already read every other thread there is about this and all they say is to turn off the anti virus and firewall. Guess what it didn't work, i even uninstalled all of my security products like norton etc and now i don't even have anything to secure it from downloading the ios it still tells me it got a timeout after a little while. This is getting tedious really bad.
Help is much appreciated here, thanks in advance.

Timeouts like that are usually concerned with the USB connection.
Make sure that you're connected to a powered USB2.0 connection, end-to-end. If you're connecting to a USB hub, disconnect everything else from it while updating.

I got instructions to connect my iPhone4 to iTunes. Each time I was prompted to restore the phone, I ended up getting an error message that the iPhone could not be restored. I checked that I had the latest version of iTunes-I did. I tried two more times and got the same error message. I disconnected the usb/phone, closed iTunes, and restarted the computer. This time the restore worked and iOS6 loaded. Unfortunately, the last backup to iCloud that I was told I had was in June. Don't know why this happened as it should have backed up every day. Now I am working through restoring my settings and apps from the last three months. Thankfully, I didn't 'upgrade' my iPad, so I have a template off of which to work. I hope this helps.

Brand new iPhone 5s won't update to iOS 7.0.2

I just got a 5s about five hours ago and it won't update to iOS 7.0.2 because it says it's still restoring- it's not. I've tried restarting the phone but that didn't help.

Did you setup as new iPhone or restore from iCloud? If iCloud it must be doing restore in background for apps and data. Check in settings -iCloud and wait for couple off hours.

Every time i connect it to itunes all it says is "There is no SIM card installed in the iphone you are attempting to activate." Even thought there is a sim card connected in my phone.

Is the SIM from a supported carrier?
Is the device carrier locked, officially unlocked, or hacked to be unlocked?
Has the SIM been reseated? If not, try that.
Also, basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore. Has any of that been tried?

My iPhone 5s won't update to iOS 8.0.2. I had been using beta versions of iOS 8 but even though there is a '1' in the Software Update box, it tells me my software is up to date (iOS 8).
However, I also get messages telling me my current iOS will expire in x days. I now have dozens of apps waiting to update, telling me I have to upgrade to iOS 8.0.1 or later.
I've tried to manually install iOS 8.0.2 but I get a message saying the firmware isn't compatible.
Any ideas?

We've an article that provides the following troubleshooting steps that may help stabilize your iPhone.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
