Iphone 4g unlocking issues

This is a strange and very frustrating situation:  I bought an AT&T iphone from someone, and she had it unlocked with AT&T, and I then activated it with Net10, completing the process as instructed with ATT (backup and restore in itunes, etc.).  I then updated the apn by downloading a new apn at apnupdatetfdata.net10.com.  Worked for about 24 hours, then 3G ceased to work, voice no problem.  I've since (in the last two weeks) spent about 10 hours on the phone with Net10 tech, even had my issue elevated, and have updated the apn several times - at least 10, using both the above apn, and by going to an apn changer site and trying various apn profiles (ATT, Net10tf, net10att, net10iphone, etc), to no avail.  Twice I was told that the phone is not completely unlocked, as I don't have a "network data" file in my settings, and "TFW" is not showing up in the status bar.  It does show signal strength and 3G status, however.
I'm pretty confident the woman I bought it from did go through the unlocking process, she brought it right to her local dealer and they assisted her.  Is it possible that it has not been completely unlocked?  OR, does anyone have any other advice (besides ditch Net10)?
Thanks very much,
Bryan

OK, now I think I understand.
Apple has made it hard for people to use MVNOs, by inserting patches in V6 updates, disabling access to cellular data network settings, thereby making it very difficult to rewrite the settings.
No, Apple has made it easy to use the phone on any supported network because the phone already has the correct settings stored in the firmware.
BUT, there seems to be a way to access these settings by inserting a T-Mobile sim, changing settings, then switching back to the Net10 or ST sim.
That was true before T-Mobile was a supported carrier. Now, not so much.
The thing I don't understand is that Apple sells unlocked phones now, so it doesn't seem like they'd do that to someone who just dropped big coin on a new iphone, only to find out they can't use it with the GSM carrier of their choice.
You can use it with the carrier of your choice. It's up to the carrier to support it, though. This particular problem is somewhat unique to the U.S. If you want to use a discount carrier, there are plenty of CDMA carriers to choose from that carry the iPhone now. Of course, you can't use an unlocked phone on a CDMA network, but CDMA is, with a very few exceptions, unique to the U.S. as well. The discount CDMA carriers are MVNOs as well, but because of the way CDMA works, and the fact that the phones for use on their network are made specifically for them, they don't have this problem.
The other thing I don't understand is that if NET10 and Straight Talk are supposedly buying data bundles from ATT and others, why can't everybody just play nice?  Why does Apple want to do their own thing and be the bully in the sandbox?
Apple's not being a bully. Apple has designed the iPhone to be easy to use. If you choose to use an unsupported carrier, you're going to run into issues. It's not Apple's problem. I'm sure that Net10 could probably get themselves certified as compatible if they wanted to spend the necessary money and put the resources into it to do so. Of course, that would probably raise prices for consumers...
StraightTalk IS a supported carrier, but NOT for GSM service. There is a CDMA StraightTalk phone available now. StraightTalk no longer supports GSM iPhones on their service. If it works for you, great. If not, they'll tell you to buy one of their iPhones instead.

Have paid for an unlocking service which claims that my husband's phone is unlocked. Followed the directions, backup up restored, everything with no luck. New to the Apple experience so very ignorant of process. Setting up with Straight Talk. I am trying to use the same iTunes account as my wife's 3G. Is that the problem? Do I need to erase and reset phone on a different iTunes? Either way I cannot access the APN info to create the celluar DATA network. Both of have voice and texting on transferred phone but cannot get the date settings changed. Thanks all,

Well, there is no way to get an iPhone officially unlocked that way, & AT&T does not charge to process iPhone unlock requests...which is the only way to get an AT&T iPhone officially unlocked.

    So I contacted AT&T and gave them my IMEI number and requested an unlock. After I got the e-mail back saying that it was ready to unlock I followed these steps (and yes it has been 24 hrs since I received the e-mail, in fact it's been over a week now and still no difference);
    Back up your iPhone.
When you have a backup, erase your iPhone.
Restore your iPhone from the backup you just made.
I've completed those steps multiple times but I still have yet to see the message saying it's unlocked. Anyone have any idea why this isn't working for me? Do I need a new SIM card from another carrier to make it work? I'm using my old SIM card from AT&T because that's all I have right now. I can't think of anything else that could be causing the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated!
You need to restore the phone (that is, iOS), not the backup. Those instructions have always been ambiguous. After iOS restores you should get the unlocked message, and you can then restore the backup (it should prompt you to). And you need to wait "long enough" after you got the instructions; it can take several days.

If you got the Unlocked message it means it was successfully unlocked by AT&T.  Apple will not relock or block it.  They have no objections to it being used on T-Mobile.  It is still under warrantee.  Take to an Apple store.  They can test it with a SIM from AT&T.  If that doesn't work have them replace the phone.  Have them verify that the new phone is unlocked.  If it does work with the AT&T card then it is a T_Mobile problem.

  • Hi IPhone 4s, unlocked and won't activate on Yoigo sim card - help?!

Hi,  Hopefully someone has the answer to this question as it is baffling me as to why my phone will not register.
I have a British purchased iPhone 4s that has been unlocked (was Orange) and I want to put a Spanish pay as you go sim in from a large carrier "Yoigo".  It come up with the following message when I attempt to activate, "The Sim card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server.  This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone.  Please insert another sim card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier.  Please contact Apple for more information"
    Any help greatly appreciated,  Thanks.

It appears that your iPhone has not been properly unlocked.  You say that it was unlocked by Orange but when you restored your phone after the unlocking was processed by Orange, did you get a message in iTunes saying something like "congratulations your iPhone is now unlocked"?
If you did not, maybe you should try the unlocking process again.  Follow the steps provided by Orange carefully.

I have an iphone 4s unlocked with att prepaid plan (non-contract), everything was working perfect BUT since i update to IOS6 i can not send MMS to anybody has Android, i went to att technical center they said only apple store can fix the problem, i went to Apple store MANY times they could not fix it, so they gave me a new iphone 4s and they said they fixed it but they did not,iam so mad that's not fair, can somebody help me please.

The nice thing about owning this overpriced POS is that Apple not only doesn't support it, but also doesn't want to hear about anything negative regarding it.  So I spoke to the so-called "support" people at Apple who successfully screwed up my contacts beyond repair.  I got a nice email from Apple asking me to rate the support I got.  I was actually civil and described the issue tactfully.  What do I get in return?  Nothing.  Not a damned thing!!  You're luck you've got me by the short hairs on a 2 year contract but I'm still tempted to throw this POS through the front window of the nearest Apple store!!  Not only will I be replacing this phone with a competitive product but I won't be buying anymore Apple crap.  I guess when you con 27 million people into believing your rhetoric and sales lies, you don't have to care whether some customers get screwed or not.  I'll be going back to Verizon and threatening legal action if they don't take this electronic dung heap back but I'm sure the teams of lawyers Apple and Verizon have on staff have insured that I have no rights in this matter and you're free to screw me anytime you please.  Sad. I used to love Apple as a company and your products.  Now you're just another Microsoft with more trendy looking junk.  I've had it with you.  If any of your executives are brave enough to talk to me, please contact me at your convenience.

Did you already follow these steps?
    iPhone: Troubleshooting activation issues
    Symptoms
Your iPhone may display one of the following messages when you attempt to activate it:
"Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable."
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported"
"The iPhone is not recognized and cannot be activated for service."
"iTunes was unable to verify your device."
    Resolution
Perform the following steps if you receive one of the messages above:
    Restart the iPhone.
Try another means of reaching the activation server and attempt to activate.
Try connecting to a known-good Wi-Fi network if you're unable to activate using a cellular data connection.
Try connecting to iTunes if you're unable to activate using Wi-Fi.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you receive an alert message when you attempt to activate your iPhone, try to place the iPhone in recovery mode and perform a restore. If you're still unable to complete the setup assistant due to an activation error, contact Apple for assistance.
    Additional Information
If you are asked to enter a password to proceed with activating the iPhone, Activation Lock may be enabled as part of Find my iPhone.

  • Thanks this was very useful.. I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am having the same problem constant network fluctuations, no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/ba

I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am experiencing constant network fluctuations on my iphone , no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/bars searching etc... Ifeel miserable after trying out all the options changed multiple sims, tried multiple carriers, restored the phone back and have set-up as new device but the problem does not get solved... its is so frustrating that after investing on a world's most expensive phone you cannot enjoy the calling features which the phone offers which is the main thing you own the phone for.. Rest of the things are working.. The funniest part I am not able to make calls or receive calls but can access the internet..  I have tried every possible thing and really very frustrated with this iphone of mine...I hope the problem gets solved.. would anyone have any solutions to this problem.. Does it mean one should never update software as I hear that after updating to IOS.5.1 the problem has started coming and same has been with there.... Apple says its a hardware failure which is very difficult to digest as sometimes I get 5 bars and able to make and receive calls but 95% of the time I am unable to. If anyone has any solution I will be very happy if he or share can share the same. Many thanks. its so disgusting to experience this on top of this apple does not support global warranty for the phone as you need to go to the country from where you bought the phone for replacement.. Truly sad state of affairs.. very very very dissappointing.

    Any ideas what to do?

I would just explain that this just started happening, that nothing has changed on the phone, that it is an original iPhone and I wondered if they are implementing a change in coverage with their Edge network in my area.
If you restore your phone, you will be given an option to back up your phone at the beginning of the process (see step 6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414).  You will be given the option to restore to that backup at the end of the restore process.  Your messages are stored in the backup so restoring to the backup will return the messages to your phone.  Be sure to import your photos and videos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) and back up your contacts somewhere before restoring your phone as these sometimesget lost in the restore process.
