IPhone 4S Audio Distortion/Crackling iOS 6.1.3

Hi All,
This is my first post here. I'm hoping someone can help! I've never had a problem before that I couldn't fix on any of my iDevices but I am stumped on this one.
I've had my iPhone 4S for Verizon for almost 2 years so it is no longer under warranty. Never had a problem until now. I recently upgraded from iOS 6.1.2 to iOS 6.1.3 and now when I try to play any audio (music, ringtones, video) the sound comes out distorted. It comes out distorted whether i play it on my headphones, the iPhone speaker, on a phone call, or an iHome. It doesn't come out distorted on bluetooth or airplay.
It starts the same each time I reset the phone: it comes out fine until I play something bass-heavy (even if bass is turned all the way down) then everything plays distorted. At first it is distorted on the right channel only so I use accessability to move it more to left channel but after a few minutes of that the left channel becomes distorted as well.
This is what I have tried to fix the problem:
System Restore (multiple times) - I have restored with and without a backup, I thought that the backup may be holding some bad code so I restored from scratch and reinstalled everything manually to no avail.
DFU Reset (multiple times) - Didn't work
Tried to restore back to iOS 6.1.2 but was unable to do so
Un-Synced my music library and only had Pandora installed as a test but it failed
Took it to the Apple store but they were unable to pinpoint the issue and told me I would most likely need a new phone (which I'm definitely trying to avoid)
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I really can't figure out whether it is a hardware or software issue. It seems like a hardware issue since my other iOS devices (iPad, Nano, Classic, MBP) all play everything fine, but since it started immediately after downloading iOS 6.1.3 I think it could be software also. It is just my iPhone that is having issues. I haven't seen any other posts with this exact issue so I wanted to start a new thread.
Thanks Everyone!

I have a nearly identical problem with my Ipad 3. Mine is the left channel. I've yet to find help, but have found a number of other posts on this and other forums discussing the issue. People have tried restore, reset etc. Also, cleaning the ports with compressed air or cotton swabs. It appears to be a software issue, but no one is sure.
Along with the original poster, I'd appreciate any help.
As far as the 'level 6' poster, if you're going to be rude, please don't bother. Hope it was just a bad day.

  • All audio crackling through any device connected to iPhone 4 - audio fine without device connected

I have an iPhone 4 and every time I plug in a set of headphones or attempt to connect the car cable to the iphone it does not play correctly. All audio that I attempt to play through either headphones or the car jack cracklings very badly, and the sounds I play are unrecognizable. The headphones are not broken they work with my computer. The jack is not broken it works with other iphones. It makes no sense at all, I had this problem a week ago, it resolved itself, and now once again I can not play audio from my iPhone other than with its native speakers.
Why would any device connected to the iPhone cause it to crackle and his and become unplayable? Like I said, it works fine without headphones or a car jack. Once I try to connect a device it malfunctions terrible and starts crackling before I even attempt to play audio
Just upgraded to 6.1.3, it did not fix it.
    PLEASE HELP

    Hi
Just to update for the last time. I have realised that if the bluetooth is paired to the car the music sound either does not play or plays for around a minute then cuts out. This still happens even if I disconnect the bluetooth connection. However if I delete the phone completely out at the car and cancel the pairing, the music plays fine no issues.
I guess somehow it is therefore based around the bluetooth. I have checked all menus I can find on the car and the phone to make sure there is no setting wrong somewhere. I cannot understand why it plays for a short time and then stops, seems like an intermittant fault ???
    Thanks
    Michael.

Also the audible app is for iPhone 5 and above
According to https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/audiobooks-from-audible/id379693831?mt=8 it only requires iOS 5 or later and it is "optimized" for iPhone 5. I think it will likely work well on your iPhone 4.
Compatibility: Requires iOS 5.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

  • IPhone 4S audio only playing through my iPod dock

My iPhone 4s audio is only working when I play it through an external device, such as an iPhone dock or the bluetooth output in my car, but it will not play audio through my external speakers or through a pair of headphone. Where the volume bar is at the bottom of the music app, it appears gray as if it is plugged into an external device when it is not. Hopefully someone can help!

    Hi MSavageXIV,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you are not hearing sound from your iPhone when using headphones, start with these troubleshooting steps:
Inspect the headset jack for debris and clean if necessary.
Connect the headset and make sure the connector is pushed in all the way.
Check the volume setting. Adjust the volume by pressing the volume up and down button on the left side of the iPhone.
If you are trying to listen to music and cannot hear any audio, make sure that the music on iPhone is not paused. Try squeezing the headset microphone to resume playback. Additionally, from the Home screen you can choose iPod > Now Playing, then tap Play.
Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on the computer that you are syncing the iPhone with (songs purchased from the iTunes Store using earlier versions of iTunes won't play).
Try another Apple headset (some third-party headsets require an adapter to be used with original iPhone).
Try a different song or video.
Check to see if the iPhone alert sounds or other iPhone sound effects exhibit the same audio issues.
Disconnect the headset from the iPhone and see if sound comes from the built-in speaker.
If you do not hear sound from the built in speaker, try these steps:
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved after restoring the iPhone software, please contact Apple Support.

  • I want to be able to use airplay to stream audio to another iOS device, and then use that audio stream to be used when recording video instead of the built in microphone / microphone input. Is this possible?

I want to be able to use airplay to stream audio to another iOS device, and then use that audio stream to be used when recording video instead of the built in microphone / microphone input. Is this possible?

A third-party app probably cannot obtain a stream from another app. To the best of my knowledge, such a capability is not provided in the software development kit, apps being "sandboxed" from each other and so allowed to communicate only in very specific and limited ways.
I'm not completely sure what you mean by "limitations on video capture". An iPhone, to the best of my knowledge, can natively record video only through it's built-in camera, and audio while doing video recording only through the built-in microphone or mic/headphone jack. There might be a video recording app that would allow audio input from an external device connected to the dock connector, but I'm not sure.
    Regards.

  • RE: Macbook Stuttering, Audio Distortion

    FYI
As discussed in Macbook Stuttering, Audio Distortion,
The solution to this problem is as follows:
The fix is to blow out nearly four years of dust (in my case), using the instructions given here (for replacing a fan...)
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Fan/522/1
You don't need to remove the fan, but go as far as removing the keyboard, and then you can simply use an air-duster to remove every bit of dust you can find.
If your macbook's heatsink (as in my case) was cleaned by a professional in Apple Store, and you still keep having problems with youtube, ichat, skype and have stuttering, audio and video distortion and your 2+ghz intel macbook behaves as if it's an early iMac G3 - you have to do all steps described at ifixit.com.
When I have taken out my macbook's fan (the heatsink was perfectly sterile) I have found a 5mm thick layer of compressed dust blocking 97% of the air exit.
Removing the blockage has helped and my macbook is operating like it's new.
PS: It's sad that people at Apple Store do not do their job properly.

Your processor is momentarily saturated. It's not really a 'defect' that is covered under warranty.
Flash is a widely-known resource hog. It's one of the reasons that Steve Jobs has 'banished' Flash from iPhones and the new iPad, and uses H.264 format video.
Have you also noticed that the fan becomes loud when this is happening? Almost any time the fan starts running at high speed, it's because your processor is working hard and needs additional cooling.
If you look at Activity Monitor when the stuttering occurs, you probably have a combined CPU utilization of the top two or three processes running of more than 100%.
It's also quite possible that the Free memory 'green slice' of the of the System Memory pie chart is quite tiny.
    Work-Arounds
    1. Run fewer processes/programs. Close and Quit every application that doesn't need to be running while you're watching Flash.
    2. Try another browser. Some are better than others at running Flash. I use Safari primarily, but Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera are also available.
    3. Add RAM memory, especially if you still have just 1Gb RAM memory installed. Upgrading to 2Gb or 4Gb (MacBook 2,1 actually only recognizes and utilizes up to 3Gb) will help somewhat. It doesn't cure the processor saturation, but it does give the programs running more 'breathing room' until it reaches the saturation point.
    4. ClickToFlash gives you options for how Flash is handled. Free download here --> http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/
    5. H.264 format videos may be less processor intensive.
    6. Buy a new Mac with a faster processor and more RAM. Even a 2.26Ghz MacBook Pro does much better than the 2007 2.16, because it uses a low power microprocessor, has 2Gb RAM standard, has a more advanced video chipset, and an unibody aluminum case to help dissipate heat.

  • Problem with Audio Distortion

I have a large iTunes (v7.2) library with over 110,000 tracks, which I run through the digital line out of a Mac Pro running OS X 10.4.10. For some reason, I'm suddenly getting serious audio distortion on many of the tracks. Some tracks play with distorted, crackling, others play extremly softly. Others play fine. What makes the problem strange is that it occurs with different tracks encoded in different ways: MP3, unprotected AAC, protected AAC, and Apple lossless tracks are all affected. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which tracks are affected. Furthermore, I've verified that it's not the tracks themselves...if I run the same tracks through iTunes on another computer (via library sharing), they play fine. Finally, I've turned off Sond Check, Sound Enhancer, and the Equalizer, but the problem persists.
It's very frustrating! If anyone can please help me, I will be extremely grateful. Thanks so much!

  • HT6114 I'm still getting audio distortion when I input audio through the minijack.

I updated to Mavericks, and now when I plug my iPhone in with the miniplug with a male-to-male cord, I get a pitch shift that happens randomly through Quicktime audio recording.
Since I don't have my music backed up on this computer, I input my iPhone's music through a cord and use the audio recording feature. It's worked great for over a year until I upgraded to Mavericks, and I hoped this update would have fixed it since it said "• Fixes an issue that my cause audio distortion on certain Macs."

Is it just sites like YouTube? Can you play music files-mp3/cd ,hear Windows system sounds, etc?

  • USB Audio Input Crackles

    Hi,
I've had an ION USB turntable for some time and whilst it has worked in the past when I try and use it now applications pick up a distorted, crackling sound instead of the actual music. It definitely isn't a problem with the turntable setup because the RCA cables reproduce the sound perfectly but any applications in OSX that try and capture or play through the audio just reproduce a clipped, distorted version of the song that is practically unrecognizable.
Any ideas on what might cause such a problem?

    Hi BlackPlastic-
The USB and RCA outputs of that turntable are produced via different electronics. The data fed over USB is the analog part, available on the RCA jacks, digitized and sent out over USB.
My guess is that if everything else is working correctly, there is probably a problem with the A to D converter in the turntable itself.
Are you connected to a USB port directly on the Mac?
    Luck-

  • Macbook - ALL audio distorted, fuzzy. Even when audio is burned to CD.

For a few months now the audio on my MacBook has seriously degraded, and not just in iTunes. All audio coming from my computers speakers, headphones, internet (youtube, beatport, etc). All audio (music and videos) on my iPhone are now distorted and fuzzy. Seems to just effect high frequencies. Low's and Mid's seem fine. Instead of sharp, clear highs they are broken and fuzzy (like a bitcrusher effect). It sounds like the gain is turned all the way up.
I'm a DJ and only use WAV or AIFF formats. This loss in audio clarity is completely unacceptable for me. I played around with the audio MIDI setup in utilities but it doesn't change anything. What is really odd is that when I burn the raw audio track to CD (I burn with ExpressBurn) the audio on the CD sounds corrupt as well. It's like all my audio files are corrupt. As well as all audio output. Did I get hit with a virus? Anyone else with this problem?
I recorded and uploaded some audio samples to try and convey what I'm talking about. These are uncompressed WAV files and they were recorded below 0db (nothing in the red). Try and compare the tracks with the tracks from youtube or something. I'm trying to remove all doubt that my audio is messed up. Hoping this helps. Thanks y'all!!

IMO, you have the same ground problem, but your Samson DI is not a transformer isolated box. It's an active DI without a transformer, according to the schematic, and that ground lift switch might help IF the problem is an actual ground loop, with multiple ground paths causing the problem. You still have at least one ground path directly connected from the unbalanced input, or you wouldn't hear anything.
You should try completely isolating the audio ground system from the computer/display system with a true audio transformer isolator. In the States, the cheap answer is the Radio Shack device previously mentioned in my other post. A DI that actually has an isolation transformer should work, too.
I also have no problem with external display and headphones, or external speakers and no display. However, I describe my sound interference as low level digital noises that vary with the external display screen content, not a constant buzz or hum. I conjecture that could be a related issue - or not, I think it could depend on the exact grounding scheme used by the audio and display devices connected.

I have audio on my iOS imovie app that I want to delete. How can I do this. I tried recording over it but it still is heard.

I think Apple User is mistaken and wandered into the wrong forum, do ignore that advise.
I am unclear as to where the audio is?
If you want to silence the audio on a clip in the timeline,
    double tap the clip,
In the audio clip settings turn the sound off.
If it is a sound recording, sound effect, or music then you can double tap, and choose delete.
Have a look at this help guide, specifically the part under create a project, add and adjust audio

  • L305-S5968 Distorted/crackling sound

I am having a BAD distortion/crackling sound problem with my L305-S5968.  It occurs whether or not headphones/speakers are plugged in.
I have looked on the support page for the laptop and there was a bulletin from a couple years ago stating it was caused by the Atheros WiFi drivers....however I don't have Atheros drivers, and that bulletin was from before the laptop was even purchased.
The laptop has Realtek HD audio and Realtek WiFi and I have the most recent drivers (that I can fine at least).....PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hi, look at my post. I know that by reinstalling Windows 7, you'll speakers will work fine again. Don't know any other way. Sorry, but that's what you need to do.

  • Distortion/Crackling during Macromedia, avi, or mpeg playb

    Hello,
I have an SB Audigy 2 ZS. A few months ago, I began to notice a very loud distortion/crackling noise during playback of Macromedia flash, avi, or mpeg files. The distortion is present when using speakers or headphones, and only accompanies sound in the files (ie a silent period in the mpeg has no distortion/crackling). Mp3 and aac files work fine, as does audio from cds and dvds. The problem began around the same time that I struggled to install correct drivers for my new TV tuner card, so the TV tuner drivers may have caused the problem.
Since then, I have removed the TV tuner from my system and uninstalled all associtated drivers. I have also tried reinstalling the Audigy drivers numerous times, including a "cleansweep" reinstall. The distortion is present even during a clean boot of windows.

Maybe you need to install Dell bundled drivers for your card to get 00% compatibility 'back'.
    Also, maybe
    - updating/reinstalling directx, audio/video codecs, etc. common components
    - switching into another device driver mode (DS/MME/WDM/ASIO)
    - checking the audio HW acceleration and SRC quality settings (needs to be set MAX for best possible quality)
    - disabling devices/controllers not needed like Modem, onboard audio/game/MIDI, etc. (from BIOS)
    - trying some other settings w/ SATA controller
