Iphone 4S black screen, and screenshots are 768x by 576y. New screen makes no difference. Can access filesystem via Linux so phone not truly dead. Help!
i have an iPhone 4S 64GB. The screen went blank. Screenshots done manually then accessed from the
filesystem are found to be 768x576. New screen - still blank. Can't unlock the phone - can only access
filesystem on computers that previously synced with it.
iOS has done quite a good job of adapting to the 'new' resolution, but my phone is now useless. I can't
unlock it because i guess iOS is strectching the screen beyond the touchscreen sensor.
Any ideas what might be wrong - I could get an iphone repair shop to put a new screen connector in if
that could be the problem (the could reball the sound DSP chip at the same time as that has failed;
nothing some tape over the top mic can't fix but would rather not have to do that. I won't return to apple
as they would just replace the motherboard (more likely the whole phone) and I would lose all my text
messages, apps, and so on. Some apps are no longer on the app store either.
Thank you for any advice - particularly as to why iOS is detecting a screen size that doesn't exist on
any iOS device, and presumably this is at least one reason for the 'blank' screen (backlight works
but screen is black). All the usual tricks like hard reset make no difference.

Thank you for your useful reply - it has solved the problem that my phone was running in
an unsupported display mode that no iOS device ever made has run in!
My laptop is also not user serviceable, but it seems to be running an nVidia card two
generations ahead of the one it was made for, due to a BIOS modification.
My MacBook Pro on the other hand definitely hasn't been taken apart, but at least it
is the non-Retina one (I had the choice of both), and has the latest specs, and yet in
the future will be user-servicable (e.g. replace battery on a Retina MacBook, or even
replace the touchpad - will be an (impossible) nightmare!

Yes, feel free to uninstall and reinstall as many times as you feel necessary. However, this doesn't often fix problem (unless the install process didn't work in the first place or that files have become damaged or are missing since the install process).

iphone 4 black screen, tried dfu mode itunes not picking up device. not able to bring up red phone off slide bar or apple logo if any combination of button holding.
Phone was given to me by apple 2 weeks ago. Last I saw of it working was phone was off so i did the quick reset. Apple logo came up, it started up and keypad for passcode came up. It said 2% battery then went up to 64% a second later. When I was playing wth it not 5mins before it was at 65% so would make sence that later indication was correct. Before I could type the 4 digit passcode in the phone turned off to black screen. Now I have tried all possible reset options incuding the 10 second hold down of both buttons for less than 10 seconds and longer than 10 seconds. Nothing is working. iTunes is not recognising the device at all. Ive had it plugged into a wall socket for three hours and the computer for 2 hours and no signal of life. Ive tried the forums on here and the youtube vidoes and seem to know what im doing with resets. Anyone able to shed some light?Not being able to get DFU Mode indicates hardware failure. Since you recently received this iPhone from Apple it has at a minimum 90 day Warranty. Make Genius reservation or make service arrangements and take or send to Apple for resolution. Regarding what is actually wrong with the iPhone, it could be possibility of several things. But some of the features point directly to battery. First step in fixing this iPhone would be battery replacement. Then trouble-shooting from there if still problem. Take it to Apple.

I purchased an iphone for my daughter and we are using the same account and she deleted some contacts from her phone and they were deleted off of my contacts as well. Is there a way to use icloud backup to reinstall the contacts to my phone?
Welcome to the Apple community.
You can only restore them from a Computer backup. This has occurred because you are sharing an iCloud account. ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc. -

Have you failed to use the device as designed?
If using the iPhone as designed, contacts are synced with a supported application on the computer or a cloud service. Pictures taken with the device would be copied off to the computer on a regular basis.
If you have been using the device as designed, simply sync the content back.
If you have not been using the device as designed, you can try restoring from the most recent backup. However, if that does not restore them, they are gone. -

When I import videos taken with my iPhone 4S to my Windows PC, some of the landscape videos are upside down and all of the portrait videos are rotated 90 degrees. It makes a difference depending on what position I hold the Iphone when taking videos. Help!!!!
Sometimes syncing will have problems with very large video files like this. I'm not sure you will be able to overcome this, but if the videos are important enough you may consider purchasing 3rd party software such as Touch Copy to transfer them.

Verizon has confirmed (here and here) they WILL unlock the SIM on the iPhone 4S, allowing for use of local SIM cards while traveling abroad (no word yet on whether this will allow for use on AT&T and T-Mobile.) This is different than the jailbreak unlocking method; SIM unlocking through Verizon is permanent and will not affect your warranty in any way.
1. Meet the following requirements:
* Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
* The iPhone 4S being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
* The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
* The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
* Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
If you don't meet one or more of the above requirements, call anyway. You may still get lucky.
2. Insert a foreign SIM into the SIM card slot on the side of your phone (only required to confirm that the unlock is successful.)
3. Call 1-800-711-8300 (Verizon Global Support) and ask the representative for a SIM unlock. Occassionally a representative may not know exactly what you are referring to; make sure you are not transferred to a different department. You are in the right place. Explain that they should have a walkthrough on how to do this, and that it allows for the use of local, non-Verizon SIM cards while traveling abroad.
4. Get confirmation from the rep that the unlock has been applied to your account, then check your phone to make sure it recognizes your SIM and can connect (if successful it will roam on AT&T, assuming you are calling from the USA.) You will NOT see an unlock confirmation in iTunes as that is for a factory-applied unlock only.
5. Enjoy your new unlocked iPhone 4S!

I am trying to fix my relatives computer it has a black screen that does not go away and I can hear windows 7 load. I suspect that he has dropped it a few times becuase i can see the dents . It had a south american version of windows 7 installed by some else (this PC was purchased in the USA). I was able to log in one night after letting it charge for a long time,removing the battery etc. I also connected a vga monitor and after some trial and error it worked fine and was rebooting ok.
After backing the data and reflashing the BIOS (it already had the latest) I installed a fresh vanilla copy of windows (english) and it seemed to be working fine for the rest of that night. I then purchased a set of recovery discs directly from HP (still waiting for these).
A few days later (tonight) I wanted to work on it to see if i could troubleshoot the battery problem (the battery does not charge before even after the OS was refreshed), but now I am back to having the same isssue with the black screen. I still can't get the screen working.
At this point I am suspecting that I need to replace the LCD screen or the motherboard. The LCD because of the black screen and the motherboard because the motherboard in general becomes very hot quickly and it might be the reason why the battery is having problems (my relative claims he purchased a refurbished battery down there).
I viewed some posts here about a black screen issue that was going on with these G42 models mentioning something about "a black screen with a bliking caps lock LED" but I do not see any lights turn on for the caps lock (ever, perhaps there is not enough power going to the LED?).
If anyone could point me in the right direction on which I should try first I would really appreciate it. I wouldnt mind replacing both and re-pasting the CPU but I don't really have a lot of time and a limited budget.
Thank youTry cleaning it out. Heat sinks and fans collect dust, which causes them to insulate the CPU rather than disperse heat. I assume that you don't have a dedicated GPU and are using the Intel video built-in.
As for repasting, it may be a good idea. The thermal paste that HP gives you is garbage, and is only there for the sake of having thermal paste. I'd recommend an Arctic Silver compound. It's pretty cheap and very effective.
