Iphone 4s mail storage, how to delete?

I am trying to update my 4S to ios 8 and I need over 4GB.  When I check the usage, it tells me that I have over 4GB of mail but I have deleted most of my emails and only have a handful with no attachments.  There is no way I have over 4GB of mail.  Any idea why it is showing this and how I can delete them.  Thanks.

Hey Qbichon,
Sorry to hear you are having issues with the iOS 8 update. If you are still trying to free up enough space to do the update, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Mail & SpamSieve - how to delete spam on server too (POP) - option needed

I am using the newest Mail (2.0.7), Mac OS X (10.4.6) and SpamSieve (2.4.3).
I access my mail through POP. SpamSieve moves junk mail to the Spam
folder, from where I delete it (move to Trash, and empty trash (erase deleted messages in all accounts). Still I find my junk mails in my account on the mail server, eg when using mail through the web.
Before, I used Eudora with SpamSieve, and it would delete the junk mail on the server too (actually immediately on detection).
How do I accomplish that with Mail and SpamSieve?
    TIA
    Marc
(PS I do want to keep the good mail on the server, at least for some time.)
    Barry Margolin in comp.sys.mac.system:
    I don't think there's a way to do this. Preferences->Accounts->Advanced
has a menu with choices of when to remove messages from the server, but
"When erased on client" is not one of the choices. The closest is "When
    moved from Inbox".
Too bad "When erased on client" is not present - it should be (Apple, are you listening?)

I don't know how SpamSieve works, but I'm pretty sure it has no bearing on this. The problem is that Mail doesn't have the option to remove mail from the server when it's deleted locally, and thus, there is no way to automatically remove only undesired mail from the server.
The article you've quoted is correct. The closest you can get to what you (and others) want in Mail is to remove messages from the server when moved from Inbox, because that's the only option available in Mail to remove messages from server using a criterion other than the time they've been there. In my case, that's not an option, because I keep all mail organized in custom mailboxes, leaving in Inbox unread messages only.

If the emails have been previously deleted (I.e. in the trash folder), tap Edit at the top of the list. You should see a delete all button at the bottom. If the messages are in a standard folder, they need to be handled one at a time.

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • How to delete folders on mail (iPhone 5)?

I have an iPhone 5 and I use the mail application quite a lot, and I also like to sort my mail into folders after I have read it. I know how to create a new folder, but I don't know how to delete an old folder (I've been using the same email account for a few years now and a lot of my folders are organised into friends from my old school who I don't keep in touch with anymore). If I tap on an older folder and click delete, it just states there and doesn't delete. Please let me know if you know how to delete a folder.

In the Mail app, start at the screen with Mailboxes at the top.
Scroll down to Accounts and tap Yahoo.
Tap Edit at the upper right.
Tap the folder you want to delete, then Delete Mailbox.
Confirm that's what you really want to do (it will erase all the messages within it) then Delete Mailbox.
Tap Done at the upper right.

  • How to delete the Previous Recipients list in iPhone 3G Mail

I would like to delete the list of previous recipients in my iPhone 3G Mail so that when I search it only shows addresses in my Contacts, not every single random address I may have used.
I know how to do this in Mail on my desktop, and I tried the option of replacing the Mail info on the iPhone with the info from the desktop, but it didn't work.
Anyone knows how to do this?

    sanjinzvonic,
In my expeirence, the only way to do this is to restore your iPhone, setting it up as a new phone. You can try resetting all settings prior to this to see if that does it as well.
To reset all settings, navigate to Settings > General > Reset.

  • TS3992 on iPad: How can I delete my Mail storage from my iCloud backup?

on iPad: How can I delete my Mail storage from my iCloud backup?

Did anyone ever provide a resolution, because I am having the same problem.
My iCloud backup said yesterday that over 500 MB was being used by the Mail portion of the backup. So I went into iCloud.com, deleted all of the mail in my Sent Mail folder, then emptied the trash entirely. When I did that, it got worse; it said that 1.2 GB of the iCloud backup was taken up by the Mail backup. That doesn't make any sense. That is actually the opposite of what was supposed to happen.
Today, it is back to saying that Mail takes up 609.4 MB of space in the backup, but there is next-to-nothing in any of my iCloud email folders. What is going on?
Any suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I delete a no-longer-valid email address from iPhone's Mail?

My son has changed his email address, and I have made the changes in the Adressbook (they sync correctly via MobileMe). But his old email address continues to pop up in the Mail application. I know how to delete this from the desktop's Mail application, but don't know how to do this on the iPhone.
Any suggestions/pointers? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Veit

The only way to remove this data from your phone is to restore the phone as a "new" device, & not from a backup. Of course, if you do this you will lose all saved data & have to sync back your itunes content. Some view this as a feature, others a PIA. You need to decide for yourself if it's worth going through restoring as new or just living with it. You can leave feedback here:

  • How to delete mail in my iPhone?

How to delet old mail in my iPhone?

Depends on the type of email account you have. If it is an IMAP account then whatever you do on whichever device, Mac or iPhone will be reflected on the other. if it is a POP account then deleting it from the iPhone will make no difference.

How do I change the address that my iphone sends when i send mail.  I have deleted the account but it still shows up as the account that will be replyed to if people hit reply.

Hey There I didn't need to change it as it shows my correct name in my icloud account. The problem is on my Mac where it still shows my Full name as my partners name.
For eg. if I send an email from "Mail" on mac and I use my icloud account then the name that shows up is my partners name when the email is received. If I send an email from the Icloud Mail box that I log into on my browser then the name that shows up when the email is received is my name which is correct.
When I go into preferences in "Mail" on my Mac to change my name, the name is ghosted out and doesn't allow me to change it ! ? It is here that it still show my partners name ?

Oh... and if your mail provider is someone like Google, They may be sitting in your all mail folder on the server.

  • How to delete the mail from my iPhone via the server?

When I delete mail on the Hotmail server, it's still available in my iPhone. Then I have to delete all over again in my iPhone, which is really troublesome! Is there a way to link my phone to the server so that when I read and delete from the internet, it will sync with my iPhone's mail app?

You would need to set up the Hotmail account as a IMAP instead of a POP3 account.
