Iphone 4S not updating to 8.1 and phone now locked

Hello everyone. I woke this morning and tried to update my iphone 4S to iOS 8.1 and was unsuccessful doing so (perhaps due to a weak wifi connection). Now when I put my phone on, a picture shows up asking me to connect my phone to itunes. Once I connect my 4S to itunes, it asks me to restore or update my phone. On clicking update, an iphone software update starts and then as illustrated in the picture below, keeps hanging when it downloads 1.39GB of the 1.66GB update required. I have even tried saying restore but the same problem arises. Any help would be appreciated as my phone is rendered completely useless right now! Please let me know if you need any more details. I have the same Numbers doc on my iPhone and my iPad. iCloud backup is turned "on" for both devices. Whenever I update the document on one device, it does not update on the other device. Is there something else that I need to do to make automatic updates happen? Many thanks, Mark

This solved the problem. "Use iCloud" was turned on in one device but not in the other. Many, many, thanks!!!

IPod Touch will not update to 2.1 and is now in recovery mode

So I downloaded the 2.1 update and tried to install, it failed and now my iPod Touch is in recovery mode. When I go to restore now it tries and fails and tells me that it could not be restored and says "An unknown error occurred(6)" I would really appreciate any help as my iPod is useless right now. This iPod has never been jailbroken either.

Dang! I got the same message too, and this is my second iPod Touch (which is a replacement because my first couldn't install 2.0 at all). I got "Unknown Error (6)" twice, then tried a third time and that finally worked.
What is it with these devices that they're so unreliable? As it is, I'm crossing my finger that the 2.0.1 update addresses the battery problem I'm having now with this second iPT. (Won't know yet until later.)

An iPhone backup to a computer via iTunes stores the photos in a backup file that is only meant to be be used if needed to restore back to the phone. There is 3rd party "extractor" software available but otherwise the photos are not directly viewable.
The backup via iTunes was a good idea and your Camera Roll photos should be there and should be able to be restored to your new phone. However if it was me I wouldn't rely on that alone. I would also import the photos to a computer where you can see and verify that you have a copy. That is a good idea at any time (not just when you know you might need it). Any phone can be lost, broken, suffer hardware issues, etc at any time and lose all data on it. Well, welcome to the world of "hacked" phones. If your purchase was from the US, you obviously purchased an iPhone that is locked to a US carrier. The iPhone must have been jailbroken and unlocked via software to accommodate your foreign SIM card. Now that you have updated the phone, it is locked back to the US carrier. Only the carrier can authorize Apple to unlock the iPhone and none of the US carriers will unlock the iPhones. Best suggestion is to sell the phone and obtain a factory unlocked version directly from the Apple store.
To answer your other question, there is not a supported method to downgrade iOS.

Settings > iTunes and App Store > Apple ID > Sign Out > Sign In with the current Apple ID
Settings > iCloud > (Scroll Down) Delete Account > Sign In with the current Apple ID

Check all your devices still have documents and data syncing turned on in settings > iCloud and that iCloud is enabled at settings > Pages. If this doesn't help, reset documents & Data from a computer at...

I'm not sure, but I know it's not recommended to upgrade to iOS 8 on anything older than an iPhone 5. I only lost my music playlists and music that was on my phone, but that music is also on my iTunes, not the playlists though, and I don't want to go through ALL my iTunes library to fix it either... But it seems I don't have a choice right now.
Whatever you do, do NOT upgrade to iCloud Drive, keep iCloud till OS X Yosemite comes out, if your computer is a Mac. I also just noticed that all my documents on my phone are gone from Pages, BUT if I go on the iCloud website they are still there. Hopefully it will all work itself out when I can update my macbook pro to OS X Yosemite.
If you backed up your phone and all your purchases off your iPhone prior to trying to upgrade you should be fine... But I'm not even remotely sure.

IPhone won't update to 6.1 and is stuck in recovery mode

I attempted to update my iPhone from 6.0.1 to 6.1 today; however, in doing so iTunes informed me that the update could not be verified. Upon receiving this message, I thought that my phone would just go back to how it was, but that wasn't the case. The iPhone 4s is now stuck in recovery mode. It just keeps shutting down and going back to the apple logo. In addition to this, I am unable to put the phone in DFU mode due to the fact that my power button randomly stopped working a few weeks ago. Any ideas on how to regain use of my iPhone? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, I tried to update to whatever the last version was as I hadn't got that 33mb update yet, during the process my phone froze. I tried to unfreeze my phone by giving it a hard reboot (holding the home and power button) but now my phone is stuck in recovery mode.
I tried various programs that provide a "recovery mode fix" none worked.
Manually downloaded the latest ipsw as I failed five times from 5AM to try and get iTunes to download the latest version and restore my phone.
When I try to restore to iOS 8 I get "this iPhone could not be restored (error 2003)" and it has been like this for 12 hours. 12 hours I've been without a phone and all I wanted to do was update my software? What a joke. I have no idea how I'm going to fix this as literally everything I have tried has failed.

it was just the biggest mistake of today, not my life :P
restoration steps i took were:
1. connect the dead phone to another pc with itunes turned on
2. follow the notifications on that itunes
3. restore the phone
4. disconnect the phone after the restoration without clicking any buttons of that itunes
5. connect the phone to my own pc
6. my own pc can recognize the phone and itunes will try to restore the backup of my phone
7. restore from the backup on my pc
8. sync everything (tick all the apps in itunes manually since there is no such button to select all) and reorganize all the apps
9. after ca. 25 min, the phone is back to the previous sw version

Make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes on your computer (10.6.3). Then, plug your iPhone into your computer with iTunes, and do a Restore.
