IPhone 4S on Verizon and GSM Canadian Carrier?

I have an iPhone 4S on VZN and live on a border. 2/3 of my time is spent in Canada, but usually close enough to border to have cell coverage.
However, my girlfriend, her family, and my work are all in Canada. I don't want to lose my VZN phone as I travel a lot in the U.S as well, and love the 4S and the VZN network. However, I am carrying a Nexus S unlocked on a Canadian provider as my Canadian phone, and I just can't get used to having two phones in my pocket.
I was wondering, I should be able to call VZN and request an unlock (as I am going over seas in a few weeks as well), when I get back, can I try my microSIM in my VZN iPhone 4S if it is unlocked?
I am thinking that yes, it will work.. But how will it work if I have the SIM in, while in the US? or will I have to pop the SIM in and out when I need to switch networks?
Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of how the iPhone deals with this, software wise, and if it would maybe simplify my tech.
Thanks!
Miles

There is no "choose network to connect to" when you have a microSIM in?
As I understand it, no. If CDMA is available, that's what it will default to. Howver, you can call VZW's Global Support Team to confirm: 800-711-8300
Best of luck.

  • Tough question: Can I purchase an off-contract iPhone 5 from Verizon and let my brother use it in Europe?

I have an iPhone 4S with Verizon, and I wanted to know if it would be possible for me to buy an iPhone 5 for the off-contract price just as if I was purchasing it for myself, and then ship it to my brother in Austria and let him use it there on the GSM network.
The reason I think this might be possible is because the GSM part of the Verizon iPhone 5 comes unlocked out of the box (or so I've been told)
One obstacle that might stand in the way is if I have to activate the iPhone 5 with Verizon before I send it to him.
Let me know if this would be possible.

If it is truly unlocked (versus the sim slot being unlocked), then yes you would be able to do this. I have no way of actually verifying if my VZW iPhone 5 is truly unlocked (I don't know of a local iPhone 5 AT&T customer to use their sim to see if my phone will work) but maybe someone on here has been able to verify this further than just what some articles state. Otherwise, if it's just the sim slot being unlocked then you would need to keep the phone active on VZW and your brother can use simcards on Europe to roam instead of paying the VZW roaming charges.

The CDMA iPhone 4 does not use a SIM at all. There is no SIM slot. It is a pure CDMA phone.

  • What are the physical internal differences between the iphone 4s on Verizon and AT

I fix Iphones all the time and i know that the iphone 4 in Verizon and AT&T are the same from the outward eye ( other then the sim trey and some antena placements) but the Iphone 4s is the EXACT same in both companies...right?

Physically they are the same. The CDMA radio is disabled in the AT&T phone. The Verizon iPhone 4S, even with the SIM slot unlocked by Verizon, can never use any US network other than Verizon.

A Verizon corporate store can provide you with a nano SIM and activate it for you. Corporate stores do not charge for SIMS. I don't know what a reseller might or might not do.

You will need to upgrade your MacBook OS to at least 10.5.8 or preferably Snow Leopard 10.6.X

  • I have a iPhone 4s from Verizon and clean esn but using for other carrier. How can I reset phone setting so I can get us contact setting? (My default contact setting is to Netherland.)

My contact setting is default for Netherland and want to resync with *228 but because of I'm not active account holder with Verizon, they can't reset it for me.
I bought it from other people and I checked the ESN , its clean one with no contract.
What's my option now? Can apple unlock it? I want to use it for GSM carrier.

Only Verizon can authorize it to be unlocked.  If they won't, you'll have to sell it to someone who can use it.

  • I have iphone 4 through verizon and travelling to London. how can I use my apps in London?

Can I use a Verizon iPhone 4 in London... I would like to be able to use my apps there?

Use them the same way you use them at home.
There won't be any CDMA carriers in London.  Most of the world uses GSM, so the phone/cell data will not be available.

  • Will Verizon Be Unlocking the iPhone 5 for International Use with local carriers abroad like they do with the 4S?

Here is my situation. I am leaving the country on business in a month. Since it is pretty doubtful that an unlocked iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order tomorrow, I'll be buying one at full price under my verizon account (not due for an upgrade yet). Verizon currently SIM Unlocks the iPhone 4S if you meet certain requirements (account in good standing, active 60 days, phone activated on account, etc.) so you can use your iPhone abroad with a local carrier there for cheaper rates. Does anyone think Verizon will do this same procedure for the new iPhone 5? I understand that my new iPhone may not have 4G LTE capability abroad due to hardware limitations on different carrier models, however all new iPhone 5 models have quad band GSM/EDGE and 3G. Would I be able to use this feature if Verizon unlocked my iPhone? It should be noted I am not trying to unlock to use my phone on Tmobile or another US carrier, as with the 4S carriers put a block on this even for unlocked Verizon models. I am looking at this from the standpoint of a traveling business user (and I think there are a lot out there wondering the same thing). Nonetheless I will be preordering the iPhone 5 from Verizon and on release day I will call them and ask if they will unlock it. If they don't I will return it. I'll update my findings here for anyone else curious about this as well.

Egilbbys21... I am curious how things worked out with getting a nano SIM and your iPhone 5.  Our family will be visiting Manila this summer, and I would like to hear a first-hand account about your phone experiences.  Do you purchase minutes for call/texting?  What about data?  Any feedback you can give from your trip regarding your iPhone usage would be helpful.  Thanks!

  • IPhone 5 from verizon unlocked

I have an iPhone 5 from Verizon and is unlocked but I want to connect it to Sprint. Could Apple change my carrier? How much would it be?

Your Verizon iPhone, if unlocked by Verizon, will only have the GSM portion of the phone unlocked.Sprint is a CDMA carrier and that is already tied to Verizon in your case. You can only use GSM SIMs from carriers outside of the us which nixes ATT (and other GSM US carriers).
If you want to use Sprint you must get a Iphone activated by Sprint.

  • If i ordered a black iphone 5 from verizon...

i recently pre ordered a black iphone 5 from verizon and it should be coming at my door on sept 28th. but after doing some research i've heard the issues with cheeping and peeling of paint and won't want to deal with that. So i was wondering can i take my iphone straight to an apple store and have them switch it out for a white one on the same day?

    No.
You could return the iphone to the place from which you purchased, then buy a white one.

  • Why does my iPhone 4S go in and out of 3G service?

I have the iPhone 4S on verizon and when I'm at work it goes in an out of 3G service (it's usually out).  It will say 3G and have a few bars though but will still be painfully slow.  My boss and supervisor all have the same phones and have the same problems.  When I look on the verizon network coverage map it says that we should have full 3G.  Anyone know why this might be happening and/or any way to fix it?  It only happens at work so its not the phone.  Thank you for the help.

Yes, as paulcb says, it's most likely because coverage inside the building stinks. You're lucky you can get the EDGE signal inside. The last place I worked, AT&T had to come out and place an antenna inside the building. Largely because we threatened to cancel our contract of over 500 phones with them if they didn't fix it.
