IPhone 4s sorting music by Album Artist? Applies to Compilations?

I was scrolling through my iPhone looking for a song, I saw an artist listed as "Hit Singles (1980-1990)". Clicking on it netted me a song by Genesis from their album of the same name. Which made me curious, so I scrolled again and found another "artist" that was, in fact, the name of the album in question.  A Jackson 5 track that I've not been able to find on my iPhone is listed in iTunes as by the Jackson 5 with the Album Artist of "Various Artists"
So I'm mucking about in iTunes and finding that this applies to a lot of compilations and trying to correct some of this nets me an artists listing that seems to willfully skip over the artists on those compilations.  As in (and this is a crappy example):
Beach Boys
Beastie Boys
Various Artists [being a Beastie Boys song on a soundtrack]
Beatles.
And choosing Various Artists gets me a list of all the compilations on my iPhone, which is... awkward at best, frustrating at worst.  I've never had this problem on any other iPod.  What's going on and how can I fix this apart from trying to correct a metric ton of incomplete data acquired over the past several years?

Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • Why does my new iPod touch sort music by album artist, instead of song artist?

I recently go an iPod touch 4th Gen. My old iPod sorted music by song artist, but the new one sorts it by album artist. My problem is this: There is an album called Re:generation. It was a project in which 5 DJs each made 2 songs for the album. So I enter the info for each song, but my iPod sorts it by album artist, which is listed as "Re:generation". I wanted the songs to be sorted by the 5 artists that actually made the songs, so there would be 2 songs under 5 different artists. If I wanted to listen to the whole album, I could press the album tab, scroll down to "Re:generation" and play the whole album. This all worked fine on my old iPod, but now it doesn't.
My first solution was to change the album artist on each song to the artist that created that song. But then by iPod list 5 different albums, so I can't listen to the album as a whole if I wanted to. My next solution was to erase the album artist info  for each song, but now none of the ten songs can be found under the artist tab. I have to go over to the album and pick which song I want to hear.
If you don't understand, here's an example. 2 of the songs on the Re:generation album are by Pretty Lights. I want to be able to select Pretty Lights under the artist tab, choose all songs, shuffle, and have those 2 songs play at some point. But I would also like to be able to got to the album tag, select Re:generation, and play all 10 songs in order. However, the new setup won't allow me to do this.
So I'm wondering if I can fix the problem by somehow editing the iPod's sort settings (if possible), or reverting back to the old system (if possible), and why Apple even changed the system in the first place. It seems pretty stupid to me, and I honestly see no reason to change what I thought was a perfect system.

wow, i really don't have time to read all that, but i'll give you an hint when you're in music library click "More" and then "Composers" i think that's what you're lookin for otherwise just ignore it

  • How to sort songs by Album artist and song number?

    System: +OS X 10.5 updated to 10.5.2 . iTunes 7.6+
I have a CD "+Cafe Del Mar - Volume 01+". Added songs to Library. Every track has different Artist. So, I have 12 songs with individual Name and Artist. Then have put value "+Volume 01+" as Album in File Info and Album Artist as "+Cafe Del Mar+". This way songs are automatically grouped together whenever I sort my library by Album or Album Artist.
Unfortunately in latter case (sorting by Album Artist) iTunes uses Artist field instead of Song Number within the Album to sort tracks. Here are links to screenshots I made to show what we are talking about here:
    Sorting by Album: http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/7783/picture1qj6.jpg
    Sorting by Album Artist: http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/4199/picture2uo9.jpg
How can I fix it and make iTunes to sort by Track Number within the same album even if I sort things by Album Artist?
    Thanks.

How to use iTunes 7 new Album Artist field
Mon, Sep 18 '06 at 7:30AM PDT • Submitted by stevebr
iTunes 7 thinks of an album by a performer (call the performer XYZ), where one or more tracks are by "XYZ featuring ABC" or "XYZ and ABC," as separate albums. In the past, the only workaround was to set the album as a compilation to avoid this, but this is an incomplete solution, and it had the side effect of the album not being classified or filed properly.
Enter the "Album Artist" tag in iTunes 7. Set this tag (via Get Info with all all tracks of the album selected) to the main artist's name, and the album will be unified.

  • How can I sort albums by album artist while keeping compilations together?

Argh, I'm getting a bit exasperated. Basically I just want to be able to scroll through cover flow and see all my albums with one cover representing each album, with all the compilations near the end under "V" for various. Surely most people would want to scroll through their albums in this way??
So I've gone through and added all the album artist info, which has worked fine for the artist albums. But for all the "Various" ones, instead of doing the logical thing and grouping them together by album, iTunes orders these all by track artist. There doesn't seem to be any secondary sort function..
I'm always defending Mac and Apple products for their logical applications and ease of use, and now I feel let down.. If there's a way around this please let me know! Thanks,
    Malinna

The trouble you're encountering is that iTunes sorts first by Album Artist, then by Artist. Thus, within each Album Artist, you'll get multiple Artist clumps.
You want to sort "Album by Artist". This will, first, strip out all your compilations and sort them to the end of your library, then sort using the hierarchy Album Artist (or Artist if there is none) > Album > Disc # > Track #. Click the Album column header until Album by Artist is displayed. (You can also choose Album by Year, which will sort albums chronologically within Album Artist.)
If you want to keep albums together, you'll need to sort on an Album column; other columns are bound to clump things by whatever you're sorting on.

  • Sorting music by "Album by Artist / Year" on iPod touch (3rd gen.)

    Hello there,
In my music library, I have plenty of discographies per artist (eg. Bob Dylan's, Coldplay's etc...), and am finding a bit of a pain to sort it the way I want it on my iPod.
I've synced my new iPad with iTunes and copied all the music across, and when I look through the music on the iPad and select an artist, each of their albums are ordered by the year they were released in (and this happened automatically). I find this a much better way of sorting music to how I did it previously (i.e. each album ordered alphabetically).
Now, my question: How the heck do I get my iPod touch to do this?
On iTunes, I figured out you can sort the iTunes library in this way by selecting an artist in grid view, then clicking "Album by Title" above the column with album artwork and changing it to "Album by Artist / Year", however this only works for that specific artist's albums - to get your iTunes library to sort all albums this way you seemingly have to do this for each artist. Is there any way to make my whole library sort music this way without having to do that?
Essentially, how can I get my iPod to sort music the way my iPad does?
    Thanks.

  • ITunes 9 and iPhone 3.1 - music sync prob (artists not all shown)

    Hello,
I'v updated to iTunes 9 und iPhone OS 3.1, went ok.
Most sync with iPhone did well, but in the music sync window not all of my artists show up. I compared and can not find a difference between tracks to artist that show up and others that do'nt (mp3, ID-Tag version 2.3,...).
Does anyone experience the same and/or has a solution to this?
    H.

    Hello,
in the case where I can see the artist, album-artist is empty. So I tried to empty the album-artist in the not-visible case too. Result: now it was visible
Because there are artist-entries for sorting too, I tried this:
album-artist filled, but sorting-album-artist empty => it is not visible
    album-artist empty, but sorting-album-artist filled =>
    ergo:
    1) there is a way to get these visible: leave the album-artist-fields empty !! (may use the sorting-album-artist-field at least)
    2) the visibility of entries in the sync-list should not depend on the filling of the album-artist-fields
=> This should be fixed in the next update...

  • Sorting Music by Album in iPod on iPad

In the iPod app on iPad, really the only way I want to organise my music is by Album.
But I have several albums containing tracks by various artists, and instead of just showing 1 Album cover representing that Album, the iPod app shows an album cover for every song on the album...
Surely there is a way to sort Albums by Album alone, and not by Album+Artist combined?
For example, I have a mixer album that was originally on 3 CDs, and I would be happy for 3 entries to be displayed representing CD1, CD2, and CD3; And the mp3 tags are all correctly set for the albums to be displayed this way...
But iPod insists on showing me roughly 60 album entries instead of 3 - one for every single song.
    This is really quite irritating.
I have worked out that I COULD change the mp3 tags to remove the artist information (and incorporate it into the song title), but this would be a time consuming corruption of correct tags to work around a bizarre behaviour of iPod.
Am I missing a setting in iPod, or in iTunes before syncing to the iPad?

Is it showing up OK in iTunes?
I have an album featuring various artists on my iPad and it shows up fine. I do find that these can be a bit of a problem though, as iTunes and iPods do have a tendency to try to split them up if everything is not just right.
Check what the album artist is set to in iTunes. I have found that a solution to this problem is to allocate a dummy album artist to all the tracks (I usually use "zzz" as this means the album will be easy to find at the bottom if you have sorted the albums by artist, but anything will do). Then, select all the tracks in the album and delete that album artist, so it is blank. Once this is done, the albums usually sit OK as compilations in my iTunes and iPod/iPad.
Not sure whether that makes sense, or if it will work for you, but it may be worth trying.

  • Iphone not sorting music correctly.

I can find the song title by searching songs and it has the right artist, but cant find under artist.  It is also merging albums with same name too. "Greatest Hits"  When I look at the playlist in itunes on my Mac it all looks right and sorts by the artist correctly.  Any help?

I'm also having this issue - I'm getting about 27GB of garbage data put into the iPhone's 'other' category
    iPhone 5 64GB
    iTunes 11.4
    MBP 10.8.5
iTunes is set to 'convert larger songs to 128k AAC', and it's trying to sync a 9,500 song library which is a mixture of aiff, wav, mp3, m4p and a couple of m4v.
Previously these all fit on my iPhone a treat. Left iTunes last night after already having transferred around 7000 of them - iTunes informed me i'd have nearly 10GB space remaining. Came back this morning and iTunes shows my phone is now 15GB over capacity. It shows all the library has synced though - no greyed out songs.
When I go to the phone, that says it has 7GB space remaining and only 1700 songs synced. in the music app itself, there's very few songs in there. Looking in Settings>General>Usage, there's no visibility of where that 27GB is being used up. Music category is only 11GB (which should be more like 38GB).
Please help I've wiped and resynced my phone 3 times now, it's driving me mental: I just want to listen to music. I've never had this issue with Android's drag n drop.

  • Unable to sort music in albums

Recently I had a computer crash and I'm having to rebuild my Itunes library on a new PC running Windows 7 64 bit.
When I re-detected all my music it's absolutely all over the place and half of it won't allow me to sort it.
I know how to rename the album and artist fields in order to combine songs into one album, but some songs have the fields grayed out and won't allow changes, and other songs seem to allow me to make the changes but then don't keep those settings after I click ok. This is really driving me insane. I hate Itunes. Why can't they just do drag and drop like everyone else? Or better yet, reverse sync my phone to rebuild itunes instead of erasing my phone. HATE. ITUNES.
I'm running 11.1.5.5. I'm afraid to run the latest update.. never know what else will be screwed up.
Does anyone have any solutions to this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Samantha

Do you still have the greyed out fields issue?  The permissions tip should be a complete fix for that.
Changes that revert themselves with mp3 files might be down to multiple tags.
    Multiple tags
The ID3 specification allow files to have multiple tags in different versions and languages, but iTunes only works properly with single tags. When multiple tags are present it can sometimes fail to apply updates to the tag that it reads back (presumably updating one of the others in the file) and it is also possible that iPod & iTunes may have different rules for which tag they give priority to. This could lead to situations in which everything is properly organised in iTunes but then inexplicably falls apart on an iPod. There are 3rd party tag editors that can manipulate multiple tags but I don't have a recommendation offhand. A workaround in iTunes is to use right-click context menu Convert ID3 Tags... > None a few times to remove all existing tags and then Convert ID3 Tags... > v2.3 to build a fresh tag with the information still held in the iTunes database. I've read in the past that iTunes isn't fully compliant with the v2.4 spec. although this may no longer be the case, however support for v2.3 is widespread so I would suggest using v2.3 over v2.4.
    iTunes Store metadata
If you notice that changes you've made to purchased tracks revert to the original iTunes Store metadata then...
In iTunes go to Edit > Preferences > Store and turn off
Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases
Share details about your library with Apple
On any iOS device go to Settings > Music and turn off
    Show All Music
Close and reopen iTunes and/or reset the device and you should see your version of the metadata for each track rather than the original store data.
See also Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely just in case WMP is involved, though that is usually a one time problem.
And see Grouping tracks into albums for advice on the organizing the library once your changes will stick.

  • Sorting music chronologically within artist

ON my IPad2, I group my albums by artist. But the. The albums appear alphabetically within artist, and I want them to sort chronologically within artist. And I see no way to do that. Am I just missing something obvious? I don't use playlists; I just start playing at song 1 and keep going till the album is over. :-) Bit old school, I will admit, but that's how I like to do it.
How can I have my iPad show me my music in the order that I want to see it? All of my music has all the correct ID tags, including year, filled in.
    Thanks

As of iOS 5, the functionality in the music app (formerly iTunes app) for the iPad was scaled back. Not sure why, although my own theory is that is had to do with the install footprint for iOS in general, and/or iTunes Match compatabilty issues. But no evidence to present for either.
My hope is that it will be improved in iOS6. However, I tend to listen to music by specific album and seldom if ever use playlist or other groupings. Personally I'd rather see an improved codec for playback over most other features, but that's another issue.

  • Sorting music videos by Artist?

My music videos are coming through on the iPod Classic 160GB in order of the title of the track - surely there should be an option to view them in order of artists so I can play multiple videos by the same artist in a row?
    Am I missing something?

I am not sure if this will help or not, but I move any and all videos from the Movie folder by doing this:
right click the video file and select Get Info.
    Click the VIDEO tab
Make sure the Video Kind is Music Video.
It now appears in the Video Music folder where you can enter the artists name in the Artist column. When you sync your ipod, your videos are arranged by artist.
One more tidbit: If you want to play your videos continuously on your IPOD (not have them stop when finished for you to manually select the next one), do this:
    right click the video file
    select Get Info
    go to the Options tab
    UNCHECK Skip when shuffling.

  • "Sort Artist" does not work on iPod / How to sort by album artist

I have many albums in my music collection that contain songs by different artists. In iTunes, I have set all these songs to the same "Sort Artist" so that they all appear under the same artist's name (the album artist's name).
However, when I sync my iPod, the "Sort Artist" settings don't carry over. For example, a compilation album with 10 songs by 10 different artists would show up under one single artist in iTunes (per my sort artist settings), but on the iPod the songs show up under 10 different artists. Is there any way to fix this problem? I basically want to sort my music by album artist, instead of just the artist.
The strange part is when I browse my iPod on my computer, the compilation albums are properly sorted under one artist, but it's still wrong when I browse on the iPod itself.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • Changing Browser to Album Artist?

    Hello,
I've got iTunes 7 on my PC and have a question about Browsing by Album Artist:
Can I change the "browser" (turn-on-and-off-able bit at the top of the main song selecty window) to work off "Album artist" instead of/as well as Artist?
Just to fill in what I already know, and to help people who are confused or stuck with iTunes organising things into folders where they don't want them stored...
I have worked out so far that I can fill in Artist and album artist (as I always did in WMP to keep things organised) so I can put Various Artists or the DJ/Compiler/Record Label in Album Artist, and the actual Artist in the Artist hole.
I also noticed that I need to check "Compliation" to make it store it in my HDD under Album artist so it doesn't confuse the **** out of me by spreading everything around into individual song artist directories and stuffing me live when DJing and looking for a particular "record" using Atomix Virtual DJ (which goes by the file structure in windows).
In the main window view I can sort all music by album artist by clicking on that title in the complete song list of all music, (and it being a "compilation").
Also in the big CD cover browsing view (which is nice btw!) it sorts by album artist. Yay! Marvellous!
However, because I have loads of CDs, sometimes if I'm not having a browse and want to go straight to a CD I'd like to be able to use the 1st or 2nd browser view. If I want a Blue Note Compilation, Various Artists, any of my soundtrack albums, or DJ/Record label compilations I have to scroll all the way up and down the long list. If for example I wanna listen to "Keep it solid Steel" by Mr. Scruff, if I choose him in the artist box it won't have anything off that album as it's a compilation by him, and will only show his own songs. WMP will go by Album Artist (even though it actually says Artist in the left Colum on the new WMP11 beta), but I'd rather use iTunes as it seems faster and nicer generally (and has useful things like the backup option). If iTunes does this it'll definitely be my media player of choice.
If this isn't possible, any chance of iTunes 8 being able to select what options you can sort by at the top of the browser?
The only way I've found is to type "Various", "Warp", "Blue Note", etc. in the search box
It seems very frustrating to me if you can't, especially since like all media players iTunes comes with "Genre" which seems far less useful amongst the widely varying crossover artists, styles, and vibes, that music comes in! Can anyone tell me if Lamb are Dance, Drum n' bass, Jazz n Bass, Electronica, Trip-Hop, Hip-hop, Trance, Soul, Pop, Alternative Pop, Jazz? Heck, today I discovered a handful of new musical genres including "Wonky Trance" and "Clown Step"! (see wikipedia if you don't believe me!)

Bollocks! No, it doesn't work nicely as they all appear in the wrong track order! Doh!
I noticed other people have brought this up before in the forum.
I sent a feedback to Apple. Here it is for those of you having the same problem, or who agree, or who don't understand what I'm on about:
    Hello,
I've just changed to using iTunes a few weeks ago as it has some nicer user functions (was previously using windows media player) and it's making me very frustrated...
I store all my albums (well over 10,000 tunes I've collected for YEARS on CD!) by the way they come on the CD; by Track Artist for the Artist and Album Artist for the Album artist. Normally for e.g. Michael Jackson, Artist and Album Artist will be the same. For compilation/DJ mix ablums this means the Album Artist will be Various Artists, the DJ/Production Crew, or Record label as applicable. If, for example, I want to listen to my Jazzanova Remixes album I can sort by album artist, choose Jazzanova, and get all the tunes on that album, whilst artist points out who each individual track is by (that Jazzanova remixed). Likewise, if I scroll to "various artists" in album artist I'll get compilation albums, or a particular DJ/collective such as by Mr. Scruff, Blue Note records compilations, etc., etc.
Also this applies to artists where the album may be one artist, but each song artist may be that artist + another, e.g. Artist being Eminem & Dr Dre, Eminem & Dido, Eminem (feat. Joe Bloggs), etc., whilst the Album remains filed under the "Album Artist" of Eminem so I don't get millions of "X with/featuring Y" artists and spreading my albums out in a big mess.
The problem of iTunes filing them in different artist folders for each track on that album on my harddrive can be overcome by making them a "compilation", then it seems to store in Compilation instead.
However, it seems to insist on filing secondarily by artist, not track number/and album, when album artist is selected. This then messes the list up completely as, if I use the artists "Coldcut" as an example, when I go to Coldcut as an album artist it displays the beginning of the "Journeys by DJ" album by coldcut (album artist) from "track artists" alphabetically A->C until it gets to the Coldcut songs on it, then has a completely different coldcut album (Sound Mirrors) of which all tracks are written by Coldcut and the album artist is Coldcut, then finishes the "Journeys by DJ" album by coldcut with the rest of the track artists from Coldcut->Z!
The only way around this seems to be to file by album, then scroll all the way through loads of tunes to get to that particular album, defeating the idea of an easily organised music collection!
This problem is made worse by the fact if I have "browse by compilations" on to help, and use the browser at the top, Artist only chooses by track artist. I then need to go to Compilations and (assuming I remember it's called "Journeys by DJ" since I can't go straight to Compilation Artist) click on the album, from a list of all my "various artist" and DJ/remix/record label compilations.
At this point it gets worse as having chosen the album (for the sake of this example "Journeys by DJ" by Coldcut) all the tracks then appear in track artist alphabetical order since it's either still being browsed by Album Artist as I would have had my records diplayed by that to begin with and it sorts secondarily by track Artist. Alternatively it could be sorted by (track) "Artist" since I'd browsing by compilation. Regardless since I would have narrowed it down to one album with the browser function so "album artist" will all be the same for all tracks, it makes no difference - it is going to be listed alphabetically by track artist.
This means therefore, that unless the album is alphabetically sorted by artist to begin with it comes up in the wrong order!!! Therefore when you play your lovely expertly DJ mixed compiation you bought on CD all the crossfades between tracks don't happen as the album's in the wrong order!!!
You can get around this by then clicking displaying "Track number" too. This seems silly though as normally in a normal view it already shows them at the front of the track listing. You therefore have to have them displayed twice, and then after going into compilations, choosing the album, you then have to sort by track number each time! If you do this, whenever you go back to the rest of your albums they then have all the track 1's first, then all the track 2's, and again you have to change what you sort by (Album Artist or Artist) to make them sensible again!
As you can imagine this is a pain! It happens with all my Various Artist albums, and various other DJ artists such as Mr. Scruff, and soundtrack albums, or record label compilations too!
The obvious possible answers to this problem are:
    a) when sorting by the column "Album Artist" make it search secondarily, after Album Artist, by album then track number, then finally "(track) Artist" after that (in case there are no track numbers!).
    b) make "artist" in the browser search by "Album Artist" not artist. This is what Windows Media Player does (even though it actually says "Artist" in the broswer), and goes by track "Artist" if there is nothing in the "Album Artist" tag field. it will then search by album and track number, but not Album artist followed by Artist. The browser could also be set to search in both Artist and Album Artist fields to save me having to go through all my 40+ compilations to find an album I know is by coldcut or Mr Scruff. If it did I could just turn "Browse by Compilation" off in preferences and get the same effect. Regardless to stop the wrong ordering it needs to not organise by Artist secondarily if I have it organised by album artist.
Whether the "Artist" in the broswer does Artist/Album Artist/or both could be set in preferences? Also this could change it to file in folders on the harddrive by Album Artist too. I'd far rather have my Coldcut, Jazzanova, & Mr. Scruff, etc. albums in Coldcut, Jazzanova, & Mr. Scruff directories, so when I browse my harddrive it's obvious who they are by rather than apparently being by "Compilation"!
Regardless iTunes should try to put things in the library view in order of Album and track number as much as possible when I have it organised by Album Artist. As mentioned I had been using WMP 10 & 11 beta until recently, but I changed as iTunes seems to work faster and smoother, and has the handy backup feature and seemless playback so I made the shift. The seamless playback made me instantly go to try DJ mix albums to hear them seamless, hence why I became frustrated very quickly!
Also I intend to get a Mac as my next computer so I won't have the option of WMP!
Another thing I noticed was the "Remember position" tag under the "get info" section when you have multiple selections. I wondered if this could change the order it plays them in but didn't seem to do anthing and can't find mention of it in the help or on the forum! What's that for?
If I'm being stupid and there's an easy way to make it work let me know, but I've tried as many things as I can think of, but I think it's reasonable not to have to keep changing the way everything is displayed in the library view to find an album and play it in the right order. I want it to work like the pile of CDs on my shelves and appear as I got them in the record store! If not Microsoft might have finally made something that seems to work in a more user friendly way than Apple, and that can't be right!
...as you can see I also pointed out that it might be nice to be able to get iTunes to file my Mr. Scruff, Coldcut, Jazzanova, etc. compilation/DJ albums on my hard drive by the Artist who released them (or by "various artists"); the same place I'd find them in the record shop I bought them from, and the main name on the album cover of the CD!
I DJ too (using Virtual DJ) and hence DO care about where I find these files on my hard drive, and would like to be able to find them based on the Album Artist! Also when I copy tunes over to my MP3 player, again I want them filed like the CDs I bought them on! I'm not just wingeing about this point for no reason. Obviously you don't care where they actually are stored on your HDD if it's only ever iTunes you play files with, and own an iPod where it automatically copies files for you, but it makes a big difference to me!

  • Sorting Songs By Album!!!

I have transferred my music from windows to Itunes BUT, I have 10 albums for 50cent, each album only containg one song!!! IS THERE A WAY I CAN HAVE MY MUSIC IN CORRECT ALBUMS?? This is without having to do it individually to each song, can I wipe all music in ITUNES and recopy them so it sorts it into its albums like in windows AND NOT BY ARTIST? As you can imagine, this has occured on most of my albums not to mention complinations!! PLEASE HELP!

In general iTunes will always use artist first not album. To get around this there are several options:
Fill in album artist - this overrides artist info, album stored using album artist
Set as compilation - files will store under compilation/album
Edit tags - remove information causing iTunes to sort the way you don't want, most often due to different artists in artist tag
I tend to use album artist method instead of compilation except when album is truly a compilation of different artists (soundtracks).

  • No album artist menu?

Well, apparently I'm the only person in the world who has their MP3s properly tagged, because the iPod doesn't have the only menu I want. I would like to be able to view my music by Album Artist>Album>Song on the iPod. My music is tagged so that albums that have multiple artists place those in the "artist field", with only a single artist (usually the name of the movie the soundtrack is from, or the "collector" of the album), and in iTunes I use the sort "album by artist" to view things properly.
Unfortunately the ipod does not offer "album artist" as one of the choices in the music menu, which makes it frustrating, as the result is a menu full of hundreds of artists with only one song in them. How do I fix this?

No, there is no Album Artist menu, but there is a Compilation menu ...
For multi-artist albums, put the individual (or duet names) in the Artist field and put a name that is common to all songs in the Album Artist field (use "Various Artists" if there is no common name). Then, tag all songs on the album as "Part of a Compilation" and then activate* the Compilations setting on your iPod, that will remove all these one-hit artists from your artist directory. The Compilation album will be accessible in either the Albums menu, or the Compilations menu.
*To activate the Compilations setting on your Classic, go into +Settings/Main Menu+ or +Settings/Music Menu+ and select the Compilations feature.
