IPhone 4s Update Failed - Backup Issue

Hi there,
I decided to update my iPhone 4s today to the 6.1.3 update, but I got an error saying that there was some kind of issure and my iPhone was in DFU mode. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it seem to of sorted it out but it was syncing whilst I was trying to set it up through the phone, which created 2 new backups. The phone has set itself up now with my old apps but nothing else is on the phone AND I can't seem to update from my previous backups I did before I did the iOS update. They have been overridden as I have checked the MobileSync folder. I did my intital backups before the iOS update at around 12PM and the only 3 updates in the folder are; 1:20PM (1.3GB), 1:27PM (7.07MB) and 1:42PM (7.07MB).
It's not allowing me to pick the 1:20PM backup which I'm guessing has most of my data in so how can I get around this issue?
Thanks in advance.

Update to this.
I've tried to use a backup extractor and the backup is corrupt. Luckily I've still got all my photos and videos as I back them up regularly but I've lost all my contacts, texts, user data etc.
This wouldn't be the first time this has happened to me or other people and I know that's no ones fault here but I hope Apple has a team that scouts these forums regularly to take note of issues. The update process needs to be more fail-safe and people need to be aware on backup overwriting and so on. These phones and devices aren't cheap and I know they make a good amount of profit off them so they could inject a bit of that in to changing this daunting and unavoidable process.

  • Iphone software update fails consistently

It seems like every time I try and update either my iPhone 5s or my iPhone 4 to the latest iOS version, I have problems.  Here are my two most recent experiences:
I connected my iPhone 5s to iTunes, and was prompted that a software update was available.  I cancelled, and first ran a "Transfer purchases" update, which finished successfully.  Then I clicked on the Manual Backup button, and watched the progress bar until it hung with no progress.  So, I disconnected the iPhone, exited iTunes, rebooted the computer (Windows 7), and powered the iPhone off and on.  When I re-launched iTunes and plugged the iPhone back in, I was greeted with the message "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone...", from which the only recovery is to restore the iPhone to factory defaults and then restore from the last backup.  Since today's backup was unsuccessful, I will be forced to use a two-month old backup.  Why can't iTunes read the iPhone contents, since it read the contents just fine when I transferred the purchases?
Then I performed a successful iOS update of my iPad Air, which encouraged me.  So, I proceeded to update the iPhone 4.  I transferred purchases successfully, and completed a manual backup successfully.  I then clicked on the Update button, the software update was downloaded successfully, but when it went to install the software on the iPhone, I received the error that the software update could not proceed because of an "unknown error".  Of course, the iPhone 4 then needed to be restored to factory defaults.
Why am I having so many issues with iPhone software updates?

And to make matters worse, when I go to restore the iPhone4 from the backup that I created a few minutes ago, iTunes says it can't use this backup because it is corrupt.  And iTunes seems to have deleted any previous backups of this device--why would it do that?  So now I need to re-build this iPhone as if it were a new device.  Very frustrating.

  • Recovering Lost iPhone Data After Failed Backup

So my mother is somewhat technically challenged and has never backed up her iphone before.. Basically I told her to do so and get the newest software update but I think an error occurred during the backup procedure and she continued with the update/restore anyways. So she lost all of her data and is very sad . Is there any possible way to find the data either on the restored empty phone, or on the computer from the failed backup (maybe it made a corrupted file that we can fix?)
    Please help!
    Thanks!

No, sorry.  Without a backup it is gone.  Did you backup to iCloud by chance?

  • No more contacts on my iPhone 4 after failed Backup via iTunes while updating the device from 4.1 to 5.1.1. What to do to get the contacts back?

The iTunes data on the computer my iPhone was firstly connected and configurated with has been deleted.
I was looking for an opportunity to update my iPhone to the newest iOS software (since it was on 5.0) without erasing all
the data saved on my mobile. But that time I did not know that all data will be erased when upgrading a device
a complete version (like from 3.0 to 4.0 or 4.0 to 5.0) and then it happened. Several hundred business contacts of mine has
been erased and cannot be reset. All functions except the phone/message contacts are unimportant now.
MOST IMPORTANT: I connected my iPhone with a new MacBook, updated iTunes to 10.6.3 (current version) and synced my
mobile with it. Data will be erased if updating on an unknown computer (for iOS device) where no data which are on my iPhone are saved.
Unfortunately, the instructions at iTunes Support were helpless because during the important backup for resetting all datas has been
    interrupted with the following window:
    Backup not possible
There are not enough space on the iPhone left to finish the backup.
It has never continued and since then all data has been erased.
I would be incredibly glad if anybody could give me at least a tip to do something.
Now I am stucking in very serious trouble.
    Thanks so much in advance!

So you have business contacts that were lost... do you not have these on a Database in some shape or form? Sounds like you need to invest in a RAID1 backup setup for your computer so you dont have this issue in the future.
As for repairing your problem, sounds like you are going to need to start from scratch at this point or if the data is still on your phone look into a program that can take the information from the phone onto iTunes.

  • IOS iphone 3GS update - sync/backup/update fail fix for frozen Iphone

    Hi
downloaded new itunes 9.2, updated iPhone software.
Result: perma fail of apple logo with empty sync bar, nothing goes.
    Fix:
essentially you need to to go and restore to factory setting twice with a step of restoring an old iPhone back up and after repeating the same procedure restoring to your latest back-up.
how to fix it step by step:
    - disconnect iPhone from computer
    - relaunch iPhone by holding down power & home button
    - close and restart itunes
    - reconnect iPhone
    - watch closely when iPhone reappears, click immediately on restore (before it starts another freezing sync/back up session)
    - restore factory settings
    - when asked if you want to back up first, click yes
    - when asked if you want to restore from backup after the factory settings restore - DO NOT CHOOSE the latest backup, restore from old pre-upgrade backup, even if its a year old (you will later do another restore, and than choose your latest back-up)
    - restore iPhone successfully, turn on, use
    - go back to itunes, connect iPhone again, click restore to factory settings again
    - do NOT back up this time
    - after restore, now use latest back up from before the restore to rebuild
result: all pictures, email settings, apps are back as they were pre-perma-freeze fail.

Read the above post but having difficulty - how to fix it step by step:
    disconnect iPhone from computer
relaunch iPhone by holding down power & home button
    close and restart itunes
    reconnect iPhone
watch closely when iPhone reappears, click immediately on restore (before it starts another freezing sync/back up session)
    restore factory settings
I can get this far but do not get this option! - when asked if you want to back up first, click yes
ONly get one type of restore option! Any ideas

  • Ipad/iphone software update fail on MacBook Pro

Apologies in advance that this will be a bit convoluted. I Try to keep it concise.
I am trying to update my iPhone/iPad to latest software version 4.3.3. This works fine on my MacBook Air, but not on my MacBook Pro (First i& version, early 2010).
I phoned Mac support and been through all their check lists (Transfer purchases, backup, sync, turn off firewall, etc.). I have used disk repair, cocktail and Clean-my-Mac. I have removed everything form the startup menu in the admin account (which I am using) and have disabled/removed all security software.
I am still getting the following error message, after itunes has gone through extracting the software and syncing the device:
"The iPhone "xxx" cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone software server could not be contacted or is temporaily unavailable." (see shot below).
As I am using the same wireless router/network connection for the MacBook Air (which as I said updates fine), it is not likely to caused by router settings, but rather something on the MacBook Pro. As I uses it as my main machine and where i keep my Itunes library, I would like to be able to perform the software updates for the iDevices from there.
Has anyone had the same problem, and possibly a solution. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Rebane
This was first posted on MacBook Pro forum, but it was suggested the me to repost it in both the iphone and ipad forum; apologies if this leads to duplication

    Thanks Nick,
    I will try this now.
Any idea though what would the MacBook Pro prevent the auto update, when the MacBook Air has no issues whatsoever. I want to avoid reinstalling the OS, maybe a re-install of iTunes might help.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Cheers,
    R

  • Iphone 6 update failed

i got error 17 while updating my phone 6 to new iOS 8.1.2 from 8.1.1.. now the phone got hang..

I see that your Question has languished for some period of time without response. You have posted your issue in Using Apple Support Communities whose topic is 'How to use this forum software's interface, features and/or how to find what you wish'. It is a relatively low traffic and inappropriate forum for your problem. I will ask our Hosts to move it to " Using iPhone " where it may get a more rapid response from your fellow users.

  • IPhone 4s - updated to ios8 - issues..

Unluckily my hard drive on my 2011 13" MBP has been dying a slow death this last week. I a have managed to drag and drop a lot of files onto external but some I'm unable to.
Then I got back from Europe (I live in the UK) and my iMessages and emails were messing up on my iPhone 4s started messing up. Just not getting emails and iMessage would not function at all. I called Three* my network provider and they said to do a reset.
I did a reset and it didn't work, they then suggested backing up and restoring with latest ios8.
I managed to back up on iTunes but now it appears that I do not have enough power in my hard drive to back up restore. It was 'restoring' for the entire afternoon with now progress on the bar.
I pulled it out in disgust and boredom of waiting.
So right now I am unsure what to do.
Currently I can not get past a 'Hello' screen.. It's a white screen with animations of hello in different languages and Siri seems to be reading them out. But I can not even scroll through this screen?
I am guessing this is a full restore that is underway.
I am willing to accept that I may not be able to restore with my older data like photos.. Luckily in iCloud when I log in I can see all my numbers and calendar entries etc so is that possible to still download them to phone?
I am currently without a phone and it ***** big time. I have no idea what to do about it?
Can anyone please suggest anything I could try or options I have at my disposal?
Really appreciate your help so far.
    Thanks.

    Hey JimmyCR,
I know that can be frustrating, especially after an update when something is not working, but for issues regarding the camera on your iPhone, take a look at the article below for some troubleshooting options to get it working again. If needed, you may need to contact Apple Support for further assistance.

  • Getting data off an iPhone 4 with failed backup?

I have an iPhone 4 which I tried upgrading to 6.1.3 while it was NOT CONNECTED TO A COMPUTER. The upgrade failed, and my phone gives the USB to iTunes icon. When I plug it in to a computer now, iTunes says it is in recover mode and I must restore it before I can use it with iTunes.
This iPhone was only ever backed-up on a computer that was lost, so there isn't any record of any of it's data on any other machine. Since I wasn't connected to iTunes when attempting to upgrade, it wouldn't have created any backup during upgrade on a computer. The phone has  lot of pictures of my kids on it that I would really love to get, but I don't know if there is any way to access the data from the phone. I'm hesitant to perform any restore with iTunes because I expect it will overwrite the data.
Are there any programs that I can use to recover data DIRECTLY FROM THE PHONE, or forensic specialists who mught be able to access it? Or do I need to just accept the loss and move on?
    Peter
    I already tried:
Plugging into a PC (it said device driver failed to install properly)
PLugging into a Mac with iTunes and iExplore (says the phone needs to be restored before it can be used with iTunes)

There are a number of commercial products on the market that "claim" to be able to recover data from an iPhone. You can Google them yourself...they all run about US $100 & whether any work or not, I can't say. These folks know what they're doing, but they are not cheap:
    http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/
If using a PC, have you tried to see if Windows Explorer sees the pics in your camera roll or the Camera/Scanner wizard? Even in recovery mode, they might be able to see the pics...they see the phone as a digital camera.

  • HT4623 iphone 5 update failed

An update today failed on my iPhone 5 this evening and now the phone is completely frozen up.
The screen is showing the itunes logo and the USB cord.
Despite being conected to my laptop the phone no longer shows on my itunes screen.
Not even a hard reset has cleared the problem The hard reset did not show the red close swipe bar just restarted the phone.
    Any ideas?

A actual full restore is done via iTunes not your phone. Going through the settings just wipes the data off where as in iTunes, restoring is wiping the data and software. To get your phone back functioning you will need to restore through iTunes and the steps in the article I posted above will allow you to do the restore if you are already not prompted to do when connecting your iPhone to the computer.

  • Iphone software update failed. Now iphone is unusable

I was updating the iphone 3G to the new update and it failed while in progress. Now the screen of the iphone shows the itunes logo with a picture of the usb cable and an arrow pointing to the logo.
The iphone no longer comes up in itunes.
I have tried resetting and the after the apple logo appears, the same picture of the itunes logo and arrow reappear.
    Any suggestions??

I fixed the problem by simply reconnecting the iphone. Itunes then allowed me to restore the iphone and the software update completed.

  • Latest iphone sofware update fails to synch photos in numerical order!

I've been informed that the reason why my photos on my 3g Iphone will no longer synch to it in numerical 'name' order is because the latest software update places them in 'date taken' order by default, consequently moving them out of my preferred option.
I've been told I will need to use a third party software in order to place my photos back in numerical order. Does anyone know of a way round this, and if not, can anyone recommend suitable, preferably free software to acheive this?
    Many thanks.

  • Iphone 5 update failed via iTunes. Needs to restore but keeps getting errors.

    Hi,
Just tried to update my iphone 5 to iOS 6.1 through iTunes in WIndows 7. First time actually, usually I have been updating directly in the phone without any problems.
When iTunes tried to update my phone it got an error, seems it didn't even got to begin updating it. Now iTunes keeps telling me I need to do a restore of the phone to be able to use it. Got the iTunes logo and a USB cabel on the screen.
Anyhow, it seems to work untill it are ready to implement the restore on my phone. The apple logo and the progress bar appears but nothing happens, it just won't move.
After a couple of minutes iTunes drops the connection to the phone and gives me an error code of 1611 and my phone goes back to the restore/recovery screen.
Seems there is a problem with the USB transfer? The weird thing is that I've been synchronizing without any problems earlier. Though when iTunes was about to begin update it installed the Apple Mobile USB drivers again, perhaps that might be the problem?
I have also followed steps in the support area with disabling security programs, reinstalling iTunes etc without any luck.

Problem solved when trying restoring on another computer. Thank god!
