IPhone 4S US/Sprint unable to activate!

Hello all,
I have a iPhone4S through Sprint, US carrier. I was having some difficulties with an enterprise application and my IT staff full reset my phone after backing it up to my MacBook Pro. Unfirtunately for the past 2 hours it would seem, I am unable to activate my phone after full reset. I have tried "Activating through iTunes" and I have tried activating over WiFi, both attach and unattached to my MacBook. Every scenario results in the same error on my phone, reading:
"Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting your iPhone to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple of minutes."
Well I have been trying again for more than a couple of minutes. Is the activation server truly down? Or is this on my end. Any assistance in troubelshooting. I had just recently updated over the air to 5.1.1 prior to the backup.
Thanks for any help. As an enterprise user who espouses the good apple word to my colleagues, I'm finding this experience beginning to degrade my faith. Phone based customer support was utterly useless, referring me to do what the phone states...

My only recourse to have my phone functioning today was to reset into DFU mode (usb plugged in, phone off, then hold power and home button together x 10 seconds then release power, continue holding home x 3 seconds and should see notice in iTunes that a phone in recovery mode has been attached (screen on phone will actually be black). Then let iTunes "recover" the phone. I backed up to my backup as I needed to use my cell for work, so will see if DFU can correct the activation server error at another time.

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

Iphone 5 restore bug - unable to activate imessage or facetime

I have the iphone 5 and it will activate imessage and facetime if i treat it like a new device. If i try to lod a backup from itunes or icloud it wont activate imessage or facetime. Ive tried everything and i just wont work. Hard reset, different networks, different backups etc... I was upgrading from a iphone 4. I even updated the old phone ios then backed it up. Then tried to restore the new iphone from that backup and it didnt help
Apple support does not have any solutions. They said it is a glitch and i need to just use the phone as a new phone. Which i was not happy with
Pretty much have to just give up the data from my old phone. :(

I found the fix for the error. Took me a few different tries but I got it to work. You have to completely reset your phone( erase all contect and settings) and set it as a, "new phone". I advise you to copy all the information that you want/need onto iCloud first. After I did this my facetime and imessage worked perfectly! Hope this helps.
On a side note as well your contacts won't be erased either but save them on iCloud just in case.

Unable to Activate iPhone 5s for Sprint in store pick up

I was one of the lucky few who preordered the iPhone 5S at BestBuy.com, but when I came in to the store to pick it up, the employees were unable to activate the phone. Sprint had a notice posted on the Best Buy register about an issue with invalid IMEI numbers and that the problem was being fixed ASAP. Hours have passed and I haven't been able to find out anything new. I had to leave my phone at the Best Buy and was told to try back later.
Does anyone know if the issue has been fixed yet?

Hello willreinking! I am sorry to hear that you're having issues getting your phone activated. The first thing to do is to make sure that the SIM card number has been updated on your account, so your device is able to program. You can update it on My Verizon. http://bit.ly/xB4iTc If it's correct, the next step is to remove/reinsert the SIM card to start the activation again. Is reliance a supported carrier for the iPhone? If not, you will be unable to get facetime to activate.

Sounds like your iPhone was unofficially unlocked by hacking it. You need to call AppleCare, tell them you only want to know which cell carrier your iPhone is locked to and give them the model and serial number. Then contact that cell carrier and see what their official unlock policy is and if you qualify.

This means the iPhone was hacked to be unlocked. The 3GS was not sold in the US as officially unlocked.
Restoring an iPhone with iTunes that was hacked to be unlocked or installing a firmware update on an iPhone that was hacked to be unlocked re-locks the iPhone to the carrier the iPhone was sold as carrier locked when new. In this case, re-locked with ATT.

As kb1951 states, unless this phone was purchased directly from Apple, it is not officially unlocked. In the US, only Apple sells officially unlocked iPhones. The message you got generally means your phone was hacked to unlock it...jailbroken...Apple's servers have detected such & are preventing your phone from activating...there's nothing wrong with the activation servers.
You'll need a sim card from the carrier your phone is locked to in order to activate it. If you don't know what carrier, you'll have to call AppleCare in the US to determine this info. Be aware, US carriers will not authorize official unlocking unless you are a customer that used the phone on their network. Thus, there is most likely no way for you to get this phone officially unlocked.

4 possible causes of that message:
1] Activation server is actually down. Very rare occurrence, but it does happen.
When it does occur, down time is very short. Solution - try again.
2] Your firewall or antivirus are blocking the connection. Solution - temporarily
deactivate your firewall or antivirus until the update completes.
3] Computer being used for the activation has previously been used to jailbreak
an iOS device. Solution - use a computer that has not been used to jailbreak an
iOs device.
4] Your iPhone is jailbroken. Google may provide some direction. Be advised the jailbreak
may have made changes that will prevent the iPhone from successfully activating.

Well I guess we are casualties of several million people trying to do the same thing at the same time. I bet if we wait a while (like a day or so) things should get more normal. After all this roll out is projecting to be the biggest one of all. We can be lucky that we even got our phones. My buddy order an hour after me and he is not even for a email saying it shipped. He's bummed big time. I am going to bed and I'll try in the morning.

Sounds like the iPhone is locked to the original Carrier
and you are trying to use a sim from another carrier
and only that original carrier can unlock the iPhone
