Iphone 4s wifi grey

I have a iphone 4s version 7.0.3 with a faulty WiFi. The WiFi turns itself off every few days or months. I have to heat the iPhone with a hair-dryer every time for it to work again.
I have read in this forum that its a hardware problem, however I am 100% sure that its a software problem.
the hair-dryer solution works every time, and it last for few days or few months. The longest was 3 months and the shortest 1 day, its very random.
Sometimes the phone is on my desk and I can see that the WiFi signal becomes weaker and weaker until it goes away.
I am not sure, if updating the ios will solve the problem.
had anyone had similar issues, and come up with a solution for it?

It is a hardware problem - the hence the fact that heating it enables it to work - there is some contact or circuit that is being helped along - it is most certainly not a software issue.
At most you can forget the network and re add it and see if it makes a difference
Else bring the device to Apple

Hi I bought my iPhone back in October in Us from Tmobile, since December the wifi greyed out and hasn't worked once (been living on data) now recently the screen goes crazy, it types by its self unlocks the phone (dont have a password) sometimes calls people etc... now the thing is I recently moved to Dubai and I cant go to a apple store as we do not have one here, so could I ship my phone to States and have apple repair it or give me a replacement if I pay for their shipping costs back to Dubai ? If not jailbroken, restore the iOS. Most likely there is a hardware problem
The warranty is valid only in the USA. Apple will not accept shipment from or ship to any address outside the USA for this phone.

IPhone 4S wifi greyed out on iOS 7 - Apple's in-store response

I was in the Apple Store on London two days ago to complain about my new IPhone 5s having wifi outages and a battery life of about 5 hours (of standby) when a woman came in and asked why her iPhone 4S has a greyed out wifi icon since the upgrade to iOS7. She was told her hardware had failed and that she should buy a new phone, or spend hundreds of pounds having it repaired by Apple. If only I was aware then as I am now that Apple are destroying iPhone 4 phones with their new software;

I presume this is Apple's company policy to sell more units. Sadly I didn't intervene but I wish I knew now that it's a common problem and that Apple are deleting posts on here about it to cover up. This elderly woman's phone was 18months old, so even out of warranty it's with the scope of consumer law for a free replacement.
I hope posting this helps others out there who might be being told similar things.

I have put up with it for months, until june 7 when I decided it has been long enough, and I got a replacement. I told the genius bar what happened, and I already did the so called "steps" that apple reccommended on the site, which was reset network settings, restore iPhone. The genius bar gave me a replacement phone, so I was expecting that the problem would be over, but it isn't. It seems that it's iOS 6.1.3 which is the case of most public complaints on apple iPhone products. Not even 3 weeks after I got the phone replaced, it is doing it again, so I suspect I'm just going to get a replacement again? Unfortunately I only have until 5th of july 2013 until my 1 year warranty is up. After that, any issue I have, I have to purchase apple care. People are expecting this problem to be fixed but I don't see it being solved any time soon. This is horrible and really low, because I have been a good customer, when I talk to the people at the genius bar, I show the utmost respect I can to them for the work they put into their job, but somewhere there is a problem where something has gone wrong. Because of that, people that only have a one year warranty (which i received because I purchased my apple iPhone at an Optus outlet, once that one year warranty is up, I have to pay for a problem that isn't even my fault? That isn't how it should work, you should be fixing this problem so people can be happy customers and leave happy. My iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPad 2 are running 6.1.3 with no such problem and the same with the overwhelming majority of iOS devices running 6.1.3.

Just out of warranty. This is a software issue. everything was ok until the software update. Apple just need to sort it out.

Iphone 4s- 6.1.2- wifi greyed out?

Ever since I upgraded from ios 6.1 to 6.1.1 then to 6.1.2 I have had my wifi greyed out and unable to use it. This has been like this for a month now.
I have reset all settings, restored from points before this update, restored and set up as a new iphone, deleted all data and settings.
Still nothing, the problem has persisted.
Will I have to go to Apple Genius bar now? As its really annoying...

Software cannot damage hardware. However, the process of updating the iOS generates heat from the processor. If the wi-fi chip (and a higher than normal percentage of iPhone 4S units have defective wi-fi chips) is damaged by this heat, the wi-fi will grey out.
It's not the software directly; it's the heat generated indirectly by the processor running at a higher capacity than normal. In essence, it's a defect in the device, either a wi-fi chip that has lower than normal heat tolerance or a processor that generated higher than normal heat.
Hardware, not software. And hardware issues are handled under the normal warranty or AppleCare, whichever you have.

You should get it looked at by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or an Apple Store next to your place, this might be a hardware issue.

Hi all my iphone 4s isnt connecting to wifi greyed out since updating ios7 tryed all troubleshooting tips etc its 15 mths old so not covered but after contacting apple i can send it for repair for €211 this seems harsh seens its their fault issue only started due to the update have read why , read loads discussions and so many with same problem So have repair set up is it even worth it or as anyone done this what was outcome ??

Some folks think the problem is due to poor solder connections of the WiFi chip on the card. Heating may expand the joints to cause temporary connectivity. The chip itself could be of low tolerance, and the iOS update causes it to fail the threshold. If you have tried the software resets, then the cure is to reflow the solder of the chip to the WiFi card, or to replace the WiFi card. Apple will not "own" this problem, even though it seems to be widespread. Apple offers to renew your contract for a new iPhone at $199. It has no correlation. You do not have to have an Apple ID in order house an iPhone. An Apple ID is only needed to use iCloud and iTunes & App Store on an iPhone. You can have an iPhone set up as new, no user data whatsoever, and still connect to wi-fi.
Making a new Apple ID had nothing to do with fixing the wi-fi on your iPhone. It's like saying that putting a new driver into a car suddenly fixed the transmission problem.

My WIFI on 2.4GHZ has been random for about six months with the IPHONE 4S. It works fine for a while, then starts to get all glitchy and fails to connect. Thought it was the router, but 5GHZ works fine. Only the IPHONE has the problem.
Have read of others having random WIFI failures. Then read that there is a fix. Apple will try heating up the WIFI chip soldered connections near the earphone side of the motherboard where the WIFI chip is installed. Point is that Apple Genious Bar has this as a known issue, and they should take you seriously. there should be no questioning of your settings, nor should there be attempts to adjust settings. Not sure if Apple Genious Bar has some kind of test for the IPHONE 4S wifi signal strength, but will find out tonight when I visit them.
Others mention they did that themselves with a heat gun or a hair dryer. somehow the expansion of the metal seems to fix the issue.
Am trying this fix mentioned here. will also try putting the IPHONE 4S in the freezer. Either way am going to break it perminant or fix it perminant. My situation never had the GREYED OUT wifi connection, just random failures.
