IPhone 4S won't restore?!?!?!?

I am wanting to sell my 4S so I'll have money when the iPhone 5 comes out so, I wanted to restore it so I could sell it through instant sale on ebay. I plugged it up, and starting restoring it. When I first plugged it up, I noticed that it kept losing connection to the computer about 2-3 times before having a steady connection. It finally stayed connected so, I started the restore. Right before it started restoring after extracting the firmware, I think I bumped it or something because it disconnected and gave me an error. So I tried it again. This time it extracted the firmware and began the restore. About half way through it, it said that it had disconnected again. The apple logo with the bar underneath it was on the screen for about 10 seconds before it went into recovery mode and was showing the connect to iTunes screen. I tried again but my phone kept shutting off when the firmware was extracting. (It wasn't losing connection because I unplugged it and tuned it on and it turned off after about 20 seconds after the connect to iTunes screen started showing.) I tried 10 times to restore and it did the same thing over and over again. So, I finally decided to try to put it into DFU mode and restore. But whenever I try to put it into DFU mode, it either shuts off before it can go into DFU sucessfully or it goes into recovery mode before DFU. And it also doesn't stay on for near enough time for it to go into DFU. When I'm trying to enter DFU, I hold down the power button for 2 seconds, then hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds but when I'm counting it always comes back on when I hit 6 or 7 seconds. Someone please help. If I didn't explain it good enough, or you need more details, please ask. Thanks!!!

Ok.
DFU failure, means iPhone failure. You have bricked it, short of component repair.
Send it to Apple via Post.

  • Synchs iphone but won't restore without password

itunes synchs with iphone but won't restore without password to unlock iphone backup files. Have tried every password I know, including the one revealed in keychains, and numeric values such as 0000, etc. to no avail. Have checked other forums and all offer possible solutions such as deleting files from itune restarting and upgrading, jailbreaking and various other terms which I do not understand...all sound iffy and possibly precarious, at best since they are not apple supported forums and some users report success using such methods but others do not. This is an apple issue and should be addressed by apple. How can I discover the wanted password and restore function to my phone, avoid this happening again with future updates, and not have to waste 3 days of my life to recover from an apple generated issue?

  • Iphone 5 won't restore from previous backup

I can't get my phone to restore from a previously synced version. I restored my phone thinking I could fix another issue  (text messages not deleting) and now I have a phone that won't restore. I run through all the processes to restore and the phone restarts just like iTunes tells me it will do and then it starts all over again. I have tried this at least 10 times with the same results.

I have the same problem. I upgraded iphone 5 to iOS 7.02 and it went into recovery mode so I had to restore to factory settings. After that it gave me the option to set up as new phone or restore from backup. When I chose restore from backup, everything seems to work fine then it restarts and apple logo comes on and bar underneath never loads/advances. It never gives an error message. So at this point my only option seems to be set it up as a new phone. Very frustrating. Did you ever find a fix for this?
Note: I've tried restoring from both itunes and icloud backup.

  • HT201263 Iphone 4 won't restore on Itunes and is stuck in connect to Itunes screen

My phone updated on its own. I didn't want the new i 0S 7 because I have an Iphone 4. Somehow my phone when i wasn't on it went to a black screen with the apple logo and a progress bar. I restarted it, connected it to itunes, and it won't restore because my phone is rejecting the update.

Take it to an Apple authorized repair center or Apple Store Genius Bar. The home button defect is NOT a software problem.

  • My iphone 5s won't restore after my phone cut off during an automatic download of ios 8.

A call dropped while talking on the phone. From that point on I was unable to use the phone, internet, voicemail, etc.  All other functions and programs were still working, email (through airwatch), texting, calendar, contacts, etc.  At the time ios 8 was downloading.  After download, through my computer ( without the computer it was giving me a download time of 16 hours) completed I was unable to install the the update and still lacked phone capability.  I restarted and still nothing.  I backed up the phone to I tunes, at which point ios 8 was then installed to itunes on my computer and have since been unable to restore the iphone.
My phone just finished trying to restore again.  It ran through all of the motions of veryfing with apple, restoring the phone, verifying the restore, extracting files, and then quit on the final firmware phase with an error message that reads: The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3).  The first time it failed it recognized the phone name but now shows up with "iphone" as the name and does not even list the serial number.
    Any suggestions? Thank You.

Is your old backup still listed in iTunes/Preferences/Devices?

  • My iPhone 4s won't restore and is stuck in recovery mode

Hello everyone in the apple community
I recently purchased an iPhone 4s and I set it up via iCloud and it worked later when I arrived home after going with my dad for a party my iPhone would not start it was in recovery mode so I tried putting it in iTunes and starting restoring it then after it was 75% done it rebooted and iTunes says "the iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored an unknown error occurred (1) so I tried again but still no luck and I also tried putting it in dfu mode but still no luck. I don't think it has been jail broken because I don't know anything about jail breaking .
    Could anyone please help me?

I have been frustrated with several issues:
    1) Smart Playlist not syncing correct (not matching iTunes library)
    2) Songs staying on my iPhone and iPad that should be coming off.  Songs that should be going on not.
    3) iPhone and iPad filled with OTHER (amber) taking up space on the phone/pad.
    4) iPhone and iPad continually getting stuck on last Step during syncing.
    5) Neither would Restore.  Get stuck on last step of download and then give a timed-out error.
Here's what I did and it seems to have worked.
By the way, I have had no problems with my iPod Classic.
    To fix:
    1) Make sure you sync and back up your iPhone/iPad (even though it's not been fully correct).
    2) Make sure you back up to iClould (this is key).  If you don't use iCloud, sign up.  It's free.  Otherwise you will lose all that is saved to your device.  I did lose some photos, so email yourself any that you just would cry if you lost).
    3) I have my device checked with SYNC THIS DEVICE...OVER WI-FI (although I don't think it has any affect on these steps).
    4) Go to SETTINGS>GENERAL>RESET>ERASE ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS
    5) It'll make sure you really want to do this and you will have to enter any password on the device.
    6) It takes a few seconds to clear.  It'll then reset.
    7) Follow instructions on the device (same ones you did when you first got it).  During set-up, turn iCloud on with Apple ID.  Once you go through the set-up, the device should have some Apps that come free and it should have no content.
    8) Connect to your iMac (not sure if this will work with a PC, but should).
    9) Set up as new device (I did not want to restore from what I had because I didn't want to put back the same problems).
    10) Select the Apps, Music, Podcasts, Photos, etc that you want on your iPhone/iPad.  This step takes time because you will have to arrange the apps on the page you want and reselect the items you want on the device.
    11) Sync/Apply.  This will take some time if you have a lot of items.
    12) After the sync is complete.  Disconnect from the iMac and go to Settings.  You'll want to reset (how you want them) the Notificiation Center, Sounds, Wallpaper, add your email, etc.  If your Contacts and Calendar are connected to your email address (Outlook), they will all come back once your email is set back up.
    13) There, likely, will be some small adjusments you will want to make (custom ringtones, time to lock-screen, etc) that you will make as you go.  These are minor.
    14) I did these steps the other day.  Played the iPod all day today (over 100 tracks affecting many Smart Playlist).  Came home, synced the iPod (no problems as normal); synced the iPhone and then the iPad and both synced fast and accurate.  What a change :-)
Hope this helps!  Time will tell.

  • Please help, my Iphone 4s won't restore backup.

I've been trying to restore my backup to my 4S after restoring it. It keeps telling me that my Iphone backup cannot be restored because my backup was corrupt or not compatible with my phone. It loads up all the way too, I just really don't know what to do. Any help is appreciated

Make sure you are using a USB port directly on the computer, not a USB hub, and a rear rather than a front port if your computer is a desktop or tower case.
Disable your antivirus before restoring. If your antivirus is Kaspersky you may have to completely uninstall it.

  • IPhone 4 won't restore backup, no error code

I recently backed-up my iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.1, and when I try to restore the backup in iTunes, it loads all the way and then gives me the error "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored because an error occured." I've tried many things, I've restored the iPhone many times and attempted to restore the backup many times too. I really need to restore the backup to my phone, and I don't understand why it's not s

Okay - other things I would try is different USB cables and restoring on another computer if possible.
If no joy with either of those, make an appointment at an Apple store near you and bring it in to be evaluated. It may have a hardware problem and will need to be replaced.

  • Iphone 4S won't restore backup after ios8 update

I updated my phone to the new iOS8 this week. I made a backup of my phone on my computer, and now it won't restore. It gets to within 5 seconds of completion before giving me the following error message.
I tried the steps in this article, but nothing has worked. All my contacts / photos messages have been wiped and I'm hoping to salvage these.

Make sure you are using a USB port directly on the computer, not a USB hub, and a rear rather than a front port if your computer is a desktop or tower case.
Disable your antivirus before restoring. If your antivirus is Kaspersky you may have to completely uninstall it.

  • IPhone 4 won't restore at all

Yesterday I tried to update my iPhone 4 (6.1.3) to iOS7. During the update it got stuck right at the end with no progress at all.
After waiting several hours I cancelled the process and restarted the update. It now gets stuck every time and won't even restore in 6.1.3.
There is no jailbreak or anything else involved nor has been.
I have tried every available opportunity till now.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Errors 9 & 14 are USB errors & can be caused by not using a powered USB 2.0 port directly on your computer, using a hub instead of a port directly on your computer, a bad cable, etc. Anti-virus software & firewalls can also produce those errors. So, shut down all firewalls & anti-virus software, if using a hub, plug directly into a 2.0 port on your computer, make sure your cable is good.
The code that bothers me the most is error 28. That error code indicates a hardware problem with your phone. If in fact you have a hardware failure, you will not be able to restore your phone. To verify, try restoring on a different computer or make an appointment at an Apple store.

  • Iphone 4 won't restore backup! NEED HELP ASAP!

Ok so I got an iphone 4 last week on at&t and today decided to switch to verizon. I did so and they switched my contacts and pictures for me. great. So I got home and connected to my macbook pro and I clicked restore from backup or whatever and it was the wrong thing. So it restored from my oldd ipod touch so I lost all contacts and pics. When I click iTunes>preferences>devices I see the backup from the other phone that I need but I need to know how to get that onto my iphone I have now. Please Help!

You won't be able to.  Here's why:
Since both your phones are new, they likely had the newest iOS version installed.  For AT&T it's 4.3.3; for Verizon it's 4.2.8.
Since the Verizon phone has a LOWER firmware number than AT&T phone, you cannot restore a Verizon phone (older firmware) from an AT&T (newer firmware) backup.  You could, however, restore an AT&T phone from a Verizon backup since the AT&T phone has  the same, or more recent firmware update.
No way around this.  If you search this forum, you'll see many similar posts.
If you used your phone as intended, you shouldn't lose much data at all, other than perhaps some application data.  Photos are stored on your computer in iPhoto (unless you didn't do as recommended and upload photos taken by the iPhone into iPhoto), contacts should be synched with Address Book so they should be on your computer.  Your iTunes media (videos, music, podcasts, apps) should still be in iTunes ready to be synched onto your new phone.

  • My iPhone 5 won't restore, and I keep getting the error messages "9" and "1600."

So, today has been a disaster for my poor little iPhone. I have been at football camp all day, and my phone has been tucked away in my bag, so no physical damage was done to it whatsoever. At about 3:30, I checked it and it was working fine. At 4, when my camp ended, my phone was dead - with 80%+ battery. It wouldn't display anything, not an Apple logo, not a charge logo, nothing. So, I tried restarting it by pressing the home button and sleep button together for 20 seconds, and it didn't work. I tried doing it for 60 seconds, and it didn't work. So, finally, I get home and plug my phone into my wall charger in hopes of reviving my iPhone, and still no luck. So I've reached my last resort and I plugged it into the computer to restore it. I finally got it to show up, and didn't think there would be any problems. I started getting it restored, and no luck. I got error message 9. I thought it was just unlucky, so I tried again. This time, the process had went a little further, enough to display an Apple logo on my screen, but then I got error message 1600. Ever since then, I've been getting those error messages. I've tried everything. I've rebooted my Mac, changed USB ports, everything. Does anybody know what it might be? I know what both errors mean, and the problems that they are depicting aren't actually happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Cole

    Hi Cole,
I did some checking around and this article has some information on your error messages:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 9 says:
    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.
    Error 1600 says:
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.
    The steps for 1604 are:
    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
If all else fails, this article should allow you to fully restore the phone:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
    I hope this helps!
