Iphone 5 battery drain issue, a question to all tech gurus.A challenge to those who can figure out the problem!

Hi guys!
I bought an iPhone 5 approximately 18 months back (warranty over) and have been running into battery problems for the past 1 month
my phone drains about 10% per hour while on sleep mode (no usage at all other than picking up calls) ,hence it can normally last up to 8-10 hours on sleep mode alone. However, when the phone is being used,it can usually only last up to 1-2 hours. It usually feels slightly warm on touch on sleep mode but becomes a little hotter when using at prolonged periods, otherwise it works quite well externally. This in my opinion is not normal since I've been using this phone for the past year and i can kind of guess the normal battery lifespan of my phone. My current iPhone 5 version is 7.1.1 and is not jailbroken.
I have had my phone changed into a new one just last year due to the faulty sleep/wake function,FYI
Before you say anything,i would like to let you know that i come from Malaysia whereby there are no genius bars here and most are 3rd party support groups who are more or less not bothered to fix or diagnose my phone problem and are more likely to change my phone into a new refurbished phone instead (cost approximately 300USD),they are not even willing to touch my phone.Trust,me I've been to more than one official stores.
Hence I've devised a few ways of diagnosing the phone problem myself based on online tips and tutorials
1)Factory reset : ive backed up and restored the phone (factory reset) with a new account just to test if it is the fault of the software. This process was done about 6 times in total but with no progress
2)Ive tried every single software tweak suggested from the net - switch off data/off wifi/airplane mode/off icloud/off background refresh/resetting the phone etc..You name it,I've done it!
3)Ive also checked for evidence of decay from the current iPhone, which shows a design capacity of 1430 and full charge capacity of 1352,which is pretty good if ud asked me.
4)As for the usage and standby values,it is not equal.on full recharge it says stand by at more than 20-24 hours and usage time of 8 hours. However,in reality this values are never really achieved.
5)Every single app has been deleted FYI,there are only stock apps in my phone.
6)Finally i gave in and had given my phone to someone experienced to manually change my internal battery into a new one ( i was observing him and I'm quite sure that he hadn't damaged anything while fixing it ).But this does not improve the battery power one bit.
This leads me to believe that this might be a hardware issue other than the battery itself,i was wondering if anyone has ever encountered a case such as this one since i am truly unable to find a cause on why the battery is drained in this manner,I'm suspecting that my sleep button might be activated, but my phone is unable to sleep internally due to some unknown reason.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!

That was probably caused by your Firewall blocking the newly installed version of Firefox.
No known security issues with Firefox 3.6.17, which was just released this past week.

It didn't show up in my music app for several hours.   Don't know why... But it's there.
I can now access and add stations through the iTunes Store to play through music app icon.

  • Possible solution to iOS 7.0.3 battery drain issue (iPhone 5).

Not a question as such, but for anyone who's having battery drain issues on iOS 7.0.3 and doesn't want to attempt upgrade to iOS 7.0.4 revision yet...
I was having some problems with battery drain with my iPhone 5 since updating to 7.0.3. The device is only about 5 weeks old so I was quite annoyed that I had issues with it.
This morning after a full charge I did a hard reset. Now the problem seems to have gone. I've had the phone on for several hours (about 4.5hrs) and it's only just dropped to 99% moments ago. This is a massive improvement (on even the battery life of the device when I got it, and it had 6.1.3 factory installed).
I hope that this helps anyone who doesn't want to risk 7.0.4 until it's had a chance to cool off and for people to identify/resolve any issues (as I am waiting too).

The update isn't the problem. It was a problem with your update process. millions of others have updated without any issue at all.
Also resetting has been discussed many times in the never ending battery draining threads.

  • My own Battery Drain Issues on iPhone 5

Hello guys, I've just created an account here to share my many issues with iPhone 5.
Well, this wasn't my Apple's 1st product, as I've had Ipod touch 2g and 3g, as well as an iPhone 3g. But it's my first time experiencing crazy battery issues with an Apple product, wich is really sad and disappoint, since this is the MOST expensive cell phone in my country (Brazil).
It all started about a week after I bought my iPhone 5. One morning I was on the bus, going to work, and my iPhone had about 99% battery remaining. 1h20 later, when I arrived at work, I had about 80% battery, so I panicked.
Suddenly I realized I was a victim of the common i5 battery drain. I was loosing 1% battery each 3~5 minutes IN STAND BY. And my settings are the same as they've ever been: wi-fi off, 3G off, 4G off (since it's not available in Brazil), brightness on minimum, no weak cell phone coverage etc. So, I shouldn't be experiencing this at all.
After reading lots of threads around the web, I realized that the ONLY solution to this would RESET AND START YOUR IPHONE AS A NEW ONE. No backups, no deleting apps and data. Sometimes removing email accounts would work, but as I didn't use this stuff, restarting my phone seemed to be the solution.
So I did it and, apparently, my problems were solved. My phone has worked perfectly for 2+ months. And then I let it fully discharge - but it's was not the first time it' happened. After I recharged for 4h, I started loosing battery really fast again, so the battery drain have came back. It was so frustrating.
Then I sent my iphone to an authorized reseller and they manage to give me a new replacement phone. They've checked my old i5 and detected a battery issue. My charger and cable were also tested but they were ok.
Well, after the very first charge on my new phone - and I've set it up as a new phone - the battery drain started again. I couldn't believe it.
So now I'm waiting for my 3rd iphone 5 in 3 months...
PS: My original iPhone 5 was bought in the USA, and the replacement one came from Brazil. Both were running iOS 6.1.4 when the issues started.
After all that, here are my conclusions:
    1) In normal conditions, with wi-fi, 3G and LTE off, you should expect your iPhone 5 to waste 1% of battery every 1h30~2h15 on STANDBY. This is based on my best iphone performance and on Apple's information: iPhone 5 should have 225h of battery time (in standby) at it's best. Since 100% = 225h, every 2h15min you should expect to "waste" 1% of battery, on standby.
Sometimes, overnight, your phone might have an even better battery life: my friend only lost 1% for about 8h/9h overnight. But this is just not common. Expect to loose about 2%~3% every night with all apps closed and no wifi/3G/LTE.
    2) If you detect a battery drain, GO TO AN APPLE STORE/RESELLER RIGHT THE WAY. Don't even bother trying a reset, as I did, because it might solve the problem for a while, but it CAN come back. Go to the apple store and ask for a diagnostic of your phone and battery. It will save you a lot of time.
    3) There are MANY causes to battery drains. The most common ones seem to be: 1- Push notifications/email related stuff -> Reset email, internet and settings. 2- Facebook app -> reinstall app. 3- Defective battery - go to apple store/genius and ask for a replacement phone.
    4) If an iPhone comes from factory with battery issues, expect AT LEAST ONE other issue. My original phone's touch screen was unresponsive when charging on PC and connect to iTunes and my replacement phone's microphone was not working properly. So expect other defective parts
    5) With my experience, I've realized I might have discovered A NEW CAUSE TO BATTERY DRAIN: A DEFECTIVE NANO-SIM CARD. Why? Well, because it's the only thing that I have used on both my iPhones (original and replacement ones). And it's the only thing thats has never been tested (both my charger and cable were tested on apple's reseller and were ok). And in my replacement phone, after I removed the SIM, I started loosing 1% battery every 1h20, when on stand by and with no wi-fi, 3G or LTE. So, if you have a battery issue CONSIDER THE SIM CARD TO BE THE PROBLEM.
Also, when my replacement phone was near any amplifier/pc speaker, it would make the amp make that "call or text incoming" sound. (to understand this, put your phone near an amplifier/speaker and ask for someone to call you). This makes me believe that the SIM card was, somehow, defective and making my phone receiving data (and I mean only telephone data, like related to calls and sms) when it shouldn't.
That's all my friends. If anyone has ever experienced this crazy issues, please try to help me. I'm getting a new sim card, iOS7 and my 3rd replacement phone and let's see if it works as it should.
Sorry for the MANY mistakes, my English is not good =\.
    Cheers from Brazil!

    Hi Folks,
iPhone & iPad2 battery drain issue SOLVED!!!!!
I had a serious battery drain problem on THREE devices using different iOS .... it was a simple fix and had certain characteristics that you may be able to relate to ......
    Devices;     16GB iPhone 4 with IOS6
                      16GB iPhone 4S with iOS7.06
                      32G iPad2 with iOS7.04
On or about Feb. 28th all three devices started to drain the battery like crazy losing about 20%/hour on the iPhones and 10%/hour on the iPad2 .... After messing around with settings, browsing forums and looking at what was common between the three devices I concluded the problem was with a single Microsoft Outlook/Live/Hotmail email account in the iOS native mail app .... I deleted the email account on all three devices (along with other unrelated Microsoft accounts on each device) and did a hard reboot (hold HOME and top LOCK button simultaniously for about 10 seconds until the apple logo appeared).
I then re-created the common Microsoft Outlook/Live/Hotmail account on all three devices in the iOS native mail app ...... SUCCESS! Now all three devices are behaving normaly with respect to battery drain ......
Hopefully this will be useful to others in this thread ..........

  • Iphone 4s IOS 7.0.4 update battery drain issues

I hope this gets to apple in regards to the issue of the battery drain. I have been following several discussions for the past couple of weeks and everyone seems to have some type of idea on what the problem is. I'm not a service tech or gadget know all, but I have been performing several "Nonscientific" test to see what is draining my battery.
I have a 4s that has always had good battery life. It seemed to run consistent to what was detailed in the product specs. I would only need to charge it every other day on limited use or the next day with heavy use. After updating to the latest update (IOS 7.0.4), the battery would drain in less than a day on limited use which is a couple of text, couple of email checks, 3 to 4 phone calls at less than 10 minutes each - no internet searches or game play.
So, after reading everyones suggestions in the forums and trying them, the battery still drained just as fast, if not faster. I read a post somewhere regarding “Bluetooth” constantly searching. So, I saw mine was doing the same. Someone replied to that person that it should not be the issue, as it does not use much power to run its task. (I found they were wrong)
Here is my nonscientific test, but a good one. (for the record I had nothing on in the notification center, Do not disturb off, only thing on in Privacy - location services was google maps, Siri, Yelp, and Find my phone; iCcloud was off; background app refreash was off; email fetch data was off; everything else was off)
Day 1 - I fully charged my phone several hours, I unplugged it at night before going to bed, did a hard reset to make sure every app was off, and only opened the settings app and made sure the Bluetooth was onand searching. I checked my phone 6 hours later and saw the battery drained from 100% to 56% with no usage other than just being on and in sleep mode. That would mean it drained at 7.3333 % an hour. Some would say that acceptable. - Its not when there is no usage. The battery would die in 13 hours with no usage.
Day 2 - I repeated the test (as above), but turned off the bluetooth. I checked my phone 6 hours later and saw the battery did not drain at all.  I started with a 100% and battery was still at a 100% with no usage other than just being on and in sleep mode. I opened a couple of apps and closed them to prevent them from running in the back ground and noticed I lost about 2% of charge after usinging it checking an app or 2. I put it back to sleep mode and checked it again in an hour and saw it only drained 3% down to 97%. Very acceptible.
Day 3 - I repeated the test, but during regular day hours with limited use of the phone (with bluetooth off). I was back to getting close to a normal battery drain I was experiencing prior to the update. I know that IOS 7.0.4 uses a little more battery power to run as it has different features and abilities, so the battery drain was not like it was before, but a lot better.
So, my experiment concluded to me that the new update is causing the bluetooth searching to run in the back ground continuously and causing the battery to drain unacceptably fast on my phone. This is a program issue that can be fixed by Apple. I find it unacceptable to have to control my bluetooth manually, as I never had to do it before and I shouldn't have to do it now. I hope Apple will fix it soon. I‘ve been a apple product person for years, and enjoy the products, but lately they have been not been satisfactory in the phone business. I have been playing with a samsung galaxy thats looking very promising, if apple doesn’t fix the issue everyone is having, they will loose business to competitors.
    Please fix the issue!

  • Have iPhone 6 and have 8.1 now w/battery drain issues. Advised to reinstall 8.1 in iTunes. How???

I seemed to have much better batter life on my iPhone 6 while on 8.0.2. Upgraded to 8.1 and now having battery drain issues!! Installed over the air on wifi and all seemed to upgrade fine. I've read a fix may be to reinstall on iTunes. How do I now reinstall 8.1 on iTunes when I'm already running 8.1? Any suggestions?

In most cases the problems when switching to a new iOS version are (as I had with my switch from iOS6 > iOS7):
    - rogue app process (app not updated yet to iOS8/8.1) check Settings > General > Usage > Battery usage in percentage to determine which app is using much more battery although you haven't used it at all or much.
    - settings in e-mail receiving is changed
    - background app refresh (turn it off if you do not need it)
    - location services (look carefully which apps you want to use this feature)
    - notifications (look carefully which apps you want to use this feature)
    - Facebook app

I've had my iPhone 4 for only 3 months, it's currently running on 5.1.1 and today for some reason it's battery life is significanetly shorter than it was yesterday, it's draining rate for usage is insanley high with 1% gone every minute i use it and i was able to fix the standby battery draining issue but I don't know how to fix the usage issue. I've done things like reset the setting and am currently restoring it but i doubt it will work, anny suggestions?

  • Iphone 4 from sprint and battery drain issues

how many people out there bought a new iphone 4 from sprint and having the rapid battery drain issues?  there is a big thread on the 4s but not as much on the 4 and im trying to decide if its best to just exchange it or try more fixes.

I have the same issue. I am with sprint. The battery goes down in 6 hours, mostly in standby and some emails. I can actualy see the battery meter going down every 30 sec when reading my mails. iCloud is disabled as also push notification. The phone gets also hot. This issue is completely stupid and remember, I had iPhones for the last 3 years. My last one was the 4. It is first time I have such a problem. My friends that have the 4S with AT&T do not have that problem. As a mater of fact, I compared today and mine goes down 50% faster. I will have to return it and switch to another provider.

  • Iphone battery draining fast after reboot

hi, my iphone battery drains completely from 100% to 0% in a few hours if I switch the phone off and turn back on. i recently found this out once after I switched off the phone.....But there is no problem (battery can last 1~2 days for normal use)if i do NOT switch off after recharge.
Is this a software issue or hardware?? Has anyone got the same problem? Thank you so much.

A couple more diagnostic tidbits.....my iPhone exhibited odd behavior after downloading the Star Gazer app from the App Store on Sunday. I activated the "arrange icon" feature to move the app icon for Star Gazer to a new position on my iPhone and after I moved it the icon for the app next to it (Weather Channel App) was absent but the label was present. When I slid my app screen back to the home screen and came back, the Weather Channel App icon was visible and the Star Gazer app was now absent but the label was present. I've also had some odd flashes of the home screen after unlocking my phone (I have it secured with a PIN to protect my data). Is this and IOS 4.1 issue?
It is not an iOS 4 issue; it is a very rare problem, and has occurred with all versions. But if you search you will see reports are in the dozens, with 100 million phones in use that's a vanishingly small number. It usually means that memory in the phone is corrupted. If rebooting the phone doesn't fix it you should restore the phone using iTunes.

  • IPhone battery drain and crash at 50%

My iPhone 4, since updating to the most recent software, had started crashing when it gets down to 50% and 50% on the dot everytime. Now it seems to crash whenever it feels like it but never will it get below 50%. The only way the phone turns back on is when it is connected to a power source once again. I don't even get the dead battery signal when trying to re-boot or anything. Now it would sound like the issue is my battery but I booted up my 3GS with the latest update and same exact thing happens which leads me to believe it's Apple and their ever-so-terrible software.(have they ever released software that left phones in perfect working condition??NO) So maybe its my back-up right? I restored and set up as a new iPhone, same problems. The battery drains from 100%-90% @ regular speed and from 90%-70% the thing reeeallllyyy starts moving quick and from 70%-50% it's just a guess as to when it will die in that region. The issue is such a deal that it's basically renderring my phone useless. If I wanted to leave a phone plugged into my wall I would still have a house phone. The Idiot bar employees told me that the software showed no glitches but that was only dated back to my last restore which was just hours before entering the store. The idiot bar employee also told me that the battery drain issue was "not a known issue" for iOS5. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? It's all over the internet! So far in my searching I have found few people with my crashing at 50% problem but I have found NO solution. Ya got any ideas?

I do have apple care that I mistakenly didn't register right when I got it. Now I can't find the receipt for my phone and I'm having issues getting it back under warranty. I'm planning on taking care of that and heading back into apple but I'm sure they'll tell me it's my issue.

  • Are battery drain issues fixed in 6.1.3?

I realize it only came out a few hours ago, but can anyone confirm if the Exchange bug that wasn't completely fixed in 6.1.2, and/or the iCloud Document Sync over cellular were fixed in 6.1.3?
    Thanks!

    Good evening all,
I too am an Apple Developer and have been messing with these devices for a while.  I can attest that 6.0.1 was the most stable and efficient iOS v6 I used.  I have a 4S and a 5, both ran 6.0.1 until the "exchange bug" was fixed.  I am sorry I upgraded my 5, because I see significant battery drain issues with or without Exchange configured.  I have restored from DFU, Reset All settings, turned on and off all settings, etc (every trick on the forums)  I test and tune for a living and clients complain to me and ask for a fix, so I do the best I can. My 4S with the SAME configuration as my 5, lasts FOREVER!  When a phone works perfect, and one "upgrades" software and sees problems, 100% is related to the software, not hardware.  Unless the software is not compatible with the hardware, then I would make the safe bet and say the software is the culprit, def an Apple realted issue IMO.
The reason for Apple to change the software on devices is because it changes how the hardware functions.  Without software, our hardware would be nothing more than paper weights.  Working with software for years I know its hard to get it perfect for millions of users.  Apple has their work cut out for them.  I don't expect perfection, but it would be nice to build on a good foundation.  I thought they finally turned the corner with 6.0.1 but 6.1.2 is a painful reality for people whom truly rely on their mobile devices.  Have faith, because 6.1.3 from a restore from a "new phone" has been working smoother for myself..so far.
