  • Microphone not working with Skype

    Hi,
I've just got a new Intel Core Duo Mac mini and want to run the latest edition of skype. Everything works except the microphone. I tested it using Skype's echo123 which allows you to leave a message for 10 seconds and then plays back with silence. Hmmm.
I have not tried or installed any other programs and I can see in the settings that the microphone should be used. Its not my microphone because it works on my Windows laptop.
    Anyone had any luck?

    Hello,
Macintosh computers require an "Amplified" microphone.
These are rare items in your local stores which cater to the PC majority.
An amplified Microphone will have a battery in it (like a AAA or AA battery).
PC's have a separate Microphone and Audio Input line.
Mac's just have an Audio Input line.
With an Audio Input line, you must have a "Line-Level" audio signal. This is the level of audio typically sent through a Stereo component's CD-Player or Tape Deck (such as when connecting an external CD-Player to a component stereo with RCA cables). This would be the audio level present on the RCA cables.
If you are using a Microphone which is not amplified, then you need a pre-amplifier to sit between the Microphone and your audio input line.
Given the cost and additional wiring mess of a pre-amplifier, it is generally better to just purchase an amplified microphone. They are available if you look.
I used to sell them back when I had a computer business, I think I sold them around $15 to $20 compared to $5 or $10 for an unamplified microphone.
The reason that you can use your other microphone with a PC is that the PC amplifies it's Microphone port.
If you are handy with electronics, here's a document on how to build your own pre-amp circuit:
    http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/micamp.html
If you are not up to the task of building a pre-amp for your microphone, then I would either purchase an Amplified Microphone (with a battery), or buy a pre-amplifier (usually around $50 to $70 for a low-end pre-amp).
Keep in mind that not all so-called "Amplified Microphones" are really self-powered and pre-amplified. Make sure it has it's own battery if there is any chance it is going to be able to work with your Mac. It needs to amplify it's own signal prior to sending it to the Macintosh for it to work for you.
One external solution around $120 is this simple and compact pre-amp:
    http://www.microphones.com/microphonegroup.cfm?URLID=Preamp-Series
I've used other solutions that were only around $60, but they take-up my whole desk. So, I guess there is a price for convenience.
A self-powered microphone would be the most elegant solution though.
    Here's a cheap ($50) solution for a self-powered microphone:
    http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=24501
There are also headphone-mounted solutions available as well.
There are also some USB solutions that people have been using for Mac's without Audio-in ports.
The USB solutions are essentially a Microphone port that plugs into your USB port. They are reportedly pretty good. But, some people have reported a delay in their recordings (particularly with music recording). So, that may or may not be an option for you.
    One USB solution is:

Internal Microphone not working with Quicktime and some other apps, yet it does for Skype.
Microphone works fine with Quictime on another mac, so I do know how to use it. The one where it is not working (A) had an external microphone and camera attached earlier, and indeed it does work with that external microphone, but not with the internal microphone selected; and (B) had RealPlayer installed previously.
    Any suggestions, please?

  • USB webcam microphone not working with Starcraft 2 voice chat

=USB webcam microphone not working with Starcraft 2 voice chat?Windows 7, X-fi Fatalty Pro
I have a webcam with ?a built in microphone (Ps3 eye). ?It is connected by USB. ?The drivers are the CL-Eye drivers; a third party driver set since Sony does not directly support the eye for PC.
in the windows audio device management, the microphone appears as normal and is set as the default device. ?I can use the windows sound recorder to record me speaking just fine. ?However if I use any other applications it doesn't seem to work at all. ?I can select the device as the default recording device in Starcraft 2 as well as Teamspeak 3 but no sound is detected. ?The USB microphone does not show up as a selectable device in recording options in my Creative Control Panel. ?Disabling the default creative microphone does nothing.
I think the problem is in that windows can directly detect the microphone and so software that uses the windows audio device manager works fine, but anything that talks directly with my sound card software does not properly detect the microphone. ?Basically, I can select the device as a default device but it does not work.
Any thoughts on this or am I SOL and have to find myself a shiny new headset?

I had the same problem. You need to check the device index of your USB mic.
In my case. I'm on a Mac OSX 10.6 system. I had four devices cataloged. With the last one being the USB mic.
    Then set like so in your AS code audioPub.microphoneManager.micIndex = 3;
Remember, that the indexing is 0 based.
The sound framework make the assumption that the index is 0.
    Hope that helps.

  • Shure Earphones (SE115m+) Microphone Not Working with OS X 10.6.6

Since I upgraded my MacBook Pro to OS X 10.6.6 the microphone on my Shure Earphones no longer works, or is even detected in the Sound preferences. (Worked flawlessly with OS X 10.5.x). Kind of surprising since they sell them at the Apple store specifically for their compatibility.
Shure Customer support insists it's Apple's problem:
"Sorry, we have not encountered this problem before. There is no firmware or software in the SE115m+, so the change in performance has to be on the Apple side.
Here is complete technical data on the "M+" product. Supply it to Apple and ask for their comments.

Also note that the volume control on these earphones does not work with the iPhone 3G.
    Anyone know of any solutions?

    Try resetting the PRAM.

  • ISight Camera not working with Skype

    Hi,
2 days ago my kids were skyping and everything was fine, then I turned off my iMac and the next day Skype wouldn't use my iSight Camera. In the settings it shows that it is using the iSight Camera but not picture! I made an update from skype but it didnt help. I restarted my computer, reinstalled skype nothing.
I am not a big pro with computers, so if you have an explanation, PLEASE be detailed in your explanation.
    Thanks
    Lucy

I know this is an older thread BUT I've been dealing with this issue for the past four days and this is what I found... (perhaps if it helps another person....)
Assuming you've already checked while on a Skype video call that your camera isn't turned off...
    FIRSTLY
Open Skype Preferences to verify your settings.
(prob in your downloads, applications folder or on your desktop)
Then at the top your screen, next to the Apple Icon you should see Skype:
Select Skype, then scroll down to Preferences.  Verify settings.
(Mine, for example, under the "Calls" Tab was set to autoanswer so I can check on
my dogs while away and tell them to get off the couch!)
    SECONDLY
Make sure another apple app isn't hijacking your camera.
Open Finder, Devices, Applications, then look for IChat
Once open, Select iChat and scroll down to preferences.
(For my settings, I don't use IChat SO I changed the "default IM application" to Skype,
    under General settings tab.)
    Select the green Audio/Video Tab
and uncheck "Open IChat when external camera is on"
    THIRDLY
I verified that all other Apps using the camera weren't open.  My insight camera worked
when I opened Photobooth,  IChat, Facetime and ICamSource (a monitoring program)
    - just didn't work with Skype!
From Desktop, go to Apple Icon, select "Force Quit Finder", then scroll down and
close everything that uses the camera.
    FINALLY
From Desktop, go to Apple Icon and select Restart (pic same as above).
Upon restarting, once the screen blanks out hold down the following keys all at once:
Option, Command and P and R keys.
For me, I heard the computer "restart song" chime twice before letting go.
    (PRAM and NVRAM settings)
    http://http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
I tried a Skype video call from an Iphone to Mac Desktop and it went through just fine!

  • Microphone not working with speakerphone

I recently purchased a iPhone 4 which is pre-owned.  I soon discovered that the microphone is not working when ever I'm using speakerphone.
The microphone works fine otherwise and I can hear the call fine when in speakerphone mode.  The problem is only with the microphone not working while in speakerphone mode.  Based on some initial Google searches, I can see this is a relatively common issue on iPhones (4 & 4s models) but have not seen a way to resolve.  Please help me resolve.

This may be relevant. I've been getting warnings "Device storage almost full" recently - even though I have an SD card that is almost empty. I suppose the device doesn't know to automatically use that for any downloaded/photos, etc.
In any case, I made some room, but is it possible that "core" stuff may have been overwritten (obviously some kind of s/w bug if so). How likely would this scenario be? I realize that anything is possible, including a meteor strike - but I was curious whether this is something that is "realitiscally" likely with the current BB OS.
Also, if I back up my data, do an OS reload, and then restore my data - is there a chance that the problem might come back? (given that the data I will back up now will have "more space" than when the warnings started coming, since I deleted some stuff).
    Thanks again.

  • Built-in iSight will not work with Skype

I have a new Macbook Pro that I purchased about a month ago, running OS
    X 10.5.8.
I've been using Skype to video chat, and at first everything was working
very well. In the middle of a chat, however, the video stopped working
    altogether.
If I go to the video tab in Skype preferences, the camera will then turn
on and I can see myself, but once I go back to the call, the camera
won't turn on (the green light on my camera stays off too). In video
preferences I have the following options checked: Enable Skype Video,
Automatically receive video from: People in my Contact list, and Show
that I have video to: People in my contact list. I have also tried to
enable the "Start my video automatically" option but to no avail. The
video camera it is set to use is the Built-in iSight.
I have tried reinstalling skype, including deleting all the preference
files on the computer, but that did not help.
The video works fine in other applications such as Photobooth, iMovie and Google Chat. I have browsed through the many Skype forum posts about similar issues, as well as Apple forums and have tried every fix that people have suggested including resetting my SMC, updating all my applications, trying Skype under different user accounts, reinstalling Quicktime, reinstalling Skype (as outlined in the Uninstall guide for mac), repairing permissions, etc.
I am pretty sure that this problem began directly after I switched to
SCREEN SHARING during a video chat. When I switched back to Video, it
    did not work.
No other applications that use my camera are running.
I am assuming that since it originally worked with Skype, and since I had not touched ANY of the options in Skype and have done nothing other than try screen sharing, and since I did a complete Skype reinstall includeing preferences, that the problem should NOT be with the Skype program itself, but rather something that was modified in the operating system configuration during screen sharing.
The only other thing I can think of trying is to reinstall iSight, although I haven't been able to figure out how to do that, or to reinstall my entire operating system, which I don't see as an acceptable solution.
I am using Skype Version 2.8.0.659
Any help getting this fixed would be greatly appreciated.
I have posted a similar topic in the Skype forums along with a screen shot of my Skype preferences window: http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=422861
From my online reading in both the Apple and Skype forums, it seems as though this is a relatively common problem. If I can find a solution from either Skype or Apple, I will post the solution in both of the forums.
Update: I just upgraded my OS to 10.6.1 and my camera started working again. Then, I was in a chat and I lost my internet connection. As soon as I got back online I restarted the conversation and the camera doesn't work again. This is getting to be ridiculous.
    Thank you for your time,
    rystheguy

    Hi,
It is years since I tried Skype. (Probably in Tiger)
I use Little Snitch, a utility that can report the ports and IPS any App is trying to contact.
For Video chats it seems the Skype process spreads the load across many "Servers" wanting to connect to about 3 doz (I got fed up with clicking the accept Button)
For this reason I do not think it is very secure.
I only today read a post that said Skype had Screen Sharing.
iChat 5 makes it clear (well if you run /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7 In Terminal) that there is a "camera" setting for the Desktop which may be a forthcoming thing or is about produce the Screen Sharing pic. (i.e iChat lists two "cameras" in the log produced by the above Terminal command).
iChat 4 and 5 use the Apple Remote Desktop engine to do Screen Share as does the Screen Sharing App invoked from the Finders Go Menu > Go to Server and using VNC:// as the Link type.
I would have no idea what protocol Skype are using.
They created their own Video protocols and similar with SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for Connecting to POTS (Plain Old Telephone Systems) Phones in disregard for Internationally agreed Standards.
I doubt that it makes use of the ARD engine. It will probably be a reinvention of the wheel again.
I took a look around the Skype web site but could not find any mention of how they are doing Screen Sharing.
I would guess it is similar to the iUSBCam method of Desktop as Video Feed.
Do the Console or System Log in Console (Applications/Utilities) have any messages about this ?

  • Isight camera not working with skype on Win 7 Bootcamp

So I was happily running windows 7 (need it for work) on my MACBook (mid 2009) with Bootcamp 3.2 until a couple of weeks ago.
I updated something (either Skype or Bootcamp, etc) and all of a sudden, my iSight camera takes like 4-5 seconds to initialize, and the frame rates on the camera with Skype are like 1 new grab every 10-15 seconds.
